Opis:
Titanium occurs in two structures; a high temperature body-centered cubic structure which is known as β phase and an ambient temperature α phase which has the hexagonal closed-packed structure. In the present study a biomedical Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy was investigated. The so-called duplex structure consisting of α lamellae and equiaxed primary α-grains was prepared by a thermal treatment. The α lamellae are created during cooling from a β-field according to the Burgers relation. This relation allows the formation of the α lamellae with different crystallographic orientations - so-called variants. The preferential misorientation between α lamellae was studied by a detailed electron backscattered diffraction analysis. The misorientation of grains in the duplex structure was modelled by a sum of random Mackenzie distribution and Gaussian peaks related to the preferred misorientations according to the Burgers relation. The preferred misorientations based on the Burgers relationship were identified in the biomedical Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with duplex structure. It is confirmed that the variant selection of α lamellae is not random.

Processing through the use of high-pressure torsion is attracting much attention at the present time because of the potential for achieving exceptional grain refinement. In principle, it appears that the thin disks used for high-pressure torsion processing should exhibit significant heterogeneity in the as-processed condition. However, experiments show that the development of homogeneity or heterogeneity is dependent upon the crystalline structure of the material. For high-purity aluminum the as-processed microstructure is very homogeneous after five or more revolutions of torsional straining but for the magnesium AZ31 alloy there is a considerable degree of heterogeneity in the as-processed disks.

Opis:
In this work the topologically close-packed phases precipitated during annealing of CMSX-4 single-crystal superalloy at temperature 1100°C were investigated. Microstructural analyses were carried out by means of scanning- and transmission electron microscopy as well as scanning-transmission electron microscopy in high angle annular dark field mode. Chemical composition in nanoareas was determined using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy investigation has shown that the topologically close-packed precipitates were formed already after 50 h of annealing at temperature 1000°C. With prolongation of the annealing time up to 2500 h the change of the morphology of topologically close-packed particles from blocky to needle-like occurred. Selected area electron diffraction analysis indicated that the topologically close-packed precipitates are the orthorhombic P phase. Quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed that the topologically close-packed precipitates are enriched mostly in Re and W.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the development of the γ/γ' microstructure and the changes in chemical composition of γ and γ' phases during high temperature annealing of CMSX-4 superalloy at a temperature of 1100°C in the time range from 500 to 2500 h. The studies were performed by means of scanning electron microscopy and the modern scanning-transmission electron microscopy with Super-X EDS system of four SDD detectors. Results of scanning electron microscopy and scanning-transmission electron microscopy analyses have shown that the microstructure of CMSX-4 superalloy is unstable during ageing at high temperature and the coalescence of cuboidal γ' precipitates was observed. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis revealed the distribution of particular alloying elements in the γ and γ' phases and the differences in their concentration in the function of the annealing time.

In this work, the boriding of binary (Ni-Ti) and ternary (Ni-Ti-Cu) shape memory alloys was carried out in a solid medium at 1173 K for 8 h using the powder pack method with Ekabor-Ni powders. Characterization of boride layer formed on the surface of alloys was identified by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. TiB₂, NiB₂ and SiC phases in the boride layer of borided binary (Ni-Ti) and ternary (Ni-Ti-Cu) shape memory alloys was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The microhardness and thickness of the boride layers were measured. The obtained hardness values show a hardness anomaly due to porosity and structural defects with increase of Cu content, while a decrease in the value of hardness moving from the boride layer to main structure was observed.

In the paper turbine blades made from single crystal CMSX-4 superalloy were investigated by X-ray diffraction methods (topography, Ω-scan mapping) complemented by scanning electron microscopy observations. By the X-ray diffraction topography method several misorientation defects were visualized as well as dendrites arrangement. It was discussed that tip of the airfoil and thin walled area of the turbine blades located near the trailing edge can accumulate more growth defects than other airfoil part, due to the complex shape of the mould.

The aim of the present work was to observe changes in precipitations during annealing after cold-rolling. Series of the samples from cold-rolled AA6013 were prepared and compared to undeformed samples. The samples were annealed at the temperatures equal to 260, 490°C for undeformed state and at 280, 360, and 530°C for cold-rolled state. For investigation thin foils were prepared. Chemical composition and crystal structure of precipitates was analysed and described using transmission electron microscopy imaging, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy and selected-area diffraction techniques. The researches indicated that low annealing temperatures caused dissolution of metastable β and Q phases. With increasing temperature there also occurred growth of Q phase. At highest annealing temperatures there were noticed precipitations of β phase again. Microstructural observation also revealed an impact of those particles on recrystallization processes.

The integrity of turbine blades is essential for the safe operation of jet engines. Thus, the mechanical properties, especially creep resistance and fatigue strength at high temperatures, must be thoroughly optimized. In particular, it has previously been observed that the mechanical properties of blades depend on the microstructure and porosity resulting from the casting process. To decrease the internal porosity generated by investment casting, hot isostatic pressing can be applied. This paper aims to evaluate the effects of hot isostatic pressing on the microstructure of IN713C alloy blades. Two variants of hot isostatic pressing treatment, differing in pressure, were carried out, and each resulted in lowered porosity. Microstructural investigations, performed using scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction revealed significant changes of γ' particles and high strain intensity in the surface layer of the blades after hot isostatic pressing treatment.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to studies of the structural and magnetic properties of Co_2FeSi Heusler alloy produced by arc melting resulting in samples with large grains compared to finer-grained ribbon type samples prepared by planar flow casting. The scanning electron microscopy completed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and magnetic methods sensitive to both bulk and surface were applied. The chemical composition inside the grains was found to be in agreement with the nominal one while at the grain boundaries enrichment on Co and Si at expense of Fe was observed. The magnetic parameters derived from the bulk hysteresis curves resulted in nearly the same values of coercivity, about 1 kA/m, for both technological procedures while magnetization was of about 15 A m²/kg higher at ribbons compared with sample prepared by arc melting, 145 A m²/kg. The surface magnetic characteristics were visibly influenced by a surface magnetic anisotropy. The smooth polished surface of the sample prepared by arc melting has allowed visualizing the magnetic domain structure inside the grains and at grain boundaries by the magneto-optical Kerr microscopy and magnetic force microscopy.

The structure of a family of high entropy alloys based on the composition CoCrFeNi, to which Pd and Sn have been added, is presented. The results stem from combined investigations by atom probe tomography as well as by scanning and transmission electron microscopy on samples produced by arc melting. Although CoCrFeNi is of fcc structure, the sample is not homogeneous on atomic scale. The addition of Pd as a fifth element retains the fcc lattice with the indication of the coexistence of at least two additional phases. The addition of Sn changes the general structure considerably.

In the paper the crystal structure of single crystal CMSX-4 blade casts, applied in high pressure turbine of aircraft engines was analyzed. The longitudinal section of blade, cast at withdrawal rate of 3 mm/min was used as a sample. During the conducted research, following X-ray diffraction methods were applied: EFG Ω-scan, Auleytner X-ray topography and analysis of diffraction reflex profile ("rocking curve"). The authors determined crystal orientation in entire blade casts on the basis of set criterion concerning values of angle α - deviation of [001] direction from the direction of cast withdrawal. Conclusions concerning the crystal structure quality of the blade were drawn based on results from three different research methods. Local changes in crystal orientation on the surface of blade cast, also areas with significant structure defect degree and the presence of internal stresses were characterized.

The synthesis of polycrystalline $Mn_{1-x}Gd_{x}Se$ solid solutions is carried out by solid state reaction method followed by quenching from the temperature of 1370 K. The X-ray diffraction studies realized at 300 K revealed that the structure of the single phase samples in the 0 < x < 0.15 concentration range is identified on base a face centered cubic crystal cell of Fm3m space group. The heating of the solid solutions to 900 K does not affect on the magnetic susceptibility as the dependences is identical to the measurements in the "heating-cooling" regime. Comparing the research results of magnetic properties of the $Mn_{1-x}Gd_{x}Se$ solid solutions with those of $Mn_{1-x}Gd_{x}S$ solid solutions, we can conclude that substitution of manganese ions by gadolinium in manganese selenide lead to more changes in the basic magnetic characteristics than in manganese sulfide.

The understanding of the structure and the stability of high entropy alloys is still incomplete and the mechanisms behind the composition-property relationships are unclear. One reason is that few systematic and accurate determinations of their composition-dependent structure on atomic level have been made. In this paper some results on the structure obtained by X-ray and neutron diffraction of the CoCrFeNi alloy, to which Pd, Sn and Cu have been added in different amounts, are reported. The investigations make it obvious that none of the alloys is completely homogeneous, as has earlier been suggested, and that they do not form a perfect solid solution.
