Opis:
We show that band electrons in A$\text{}_{n}$C$\text{}_{60}$ crystal (C$\text{}_{60}$ fullerene doped with alkali ions A) are in highly chaotic quantum state. We describe intensity of the chaos by means of the Shannon information entropy, which we calculate using single particle Bloch functions. The entropy provides a quantitative measure of scars as well as degree of electrons delocalization in gaps between C$\text{}_{60}$ molecules. Implications of our results for conductivity in A$\text{}_{3}$C$\text{}_{60}$ are discussed.

Opis:
The presence of fullerene- and nanotube-like elements in carbons prepared from saccharose and anthracene by slow pyrolysis and then heat treated at 1000°C, 1900°C, and 2300°C has been revealed using Raman spectroscopy. High energy X-ray diffraction has been used to examine the effect on these carbons of heat treatment. Tendency to graphitization of the anthracene-based carbon and resistance to graphitization of the saccharose carbon will be considered in the light of the formation of curved graphitic networks and cages. The obtained results lead us to propose a model of the structure of non-graphitizing and graphitizing carbons.

Opis:
The aim of Fe K edge XANES and EXAFS studies is to reveal the local structure around Fe ions in C$\text{}_{60}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$ intercalated fullerites. The measurements are performed in transmission mode at LN$\text{}_{2}$ temperature for C$\text{}_{60}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$ powder samples and other materials: ferrocene Fe(C$\text{}_{5}$H$\text{}_{5}$)$\text{}_{2}$, Fe metal foil and α-Fe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$. The main result is that the XAFS spectra of the C$\text{}_{60}$Fe$\text{}_{2}$ intercalate is almost identical to that of ferrocene and very different from α-Fe and α-Fe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$. The results support opinion that in the C$\text{}_{60}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$ intercalates the ferrocene-like bonds in complexes C$\text{}_{60}$FeC$\text{}_{60}$ are formed. Additionally, the XAFS spectra showed that neither remarkable amount of Fe metallic clusters nor oxidized iron particles are present in the C$\text{}_{60}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$ sample.

Hyperbolic icosahedral tilings by Buckyballs with 4 or 8 Buckyballs sharing a vertex are considered as an example of tilings by Archimedean polyhedra. Representation requires Poincaré balls; colour symmetry may be derived by GAP. Colour symmetries preserving both rotation and reflection symmetry as well as only rotation symmetry are discussed.

In this work we have studied the structural and magnetic properties of "as-prepared" multiwalled carbon nanotubes, synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition method, and chemically modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Transmission electron microscopy was used to show multiwalled carbon nanotubes structure. The results of systematic magnetic property measurements on multiwalled carbon nanotubes are presented. The static and dynamic magnetic responses, such as the temperature dependence of the linear AC susceptibility and DC magnetization up to 9 T were studied. We have observed significant changes in magnetic AC susceptibility and magnetization for "as-prepared" and chemically modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes samples.

This paper is devoted to identification of the most important factors responsible for formation of magnetic moments at edges of graphene-like nanoribbons. The main role is attributed to the Hubbard correlations (within unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation) and intrinsic spin-orbit interactions, but additionally a perpendicular electric field is also taken into account. Of particular interest is the interplay of the in-plane edge magnetism and the energy band gap. It is shown that, with the increasing electric field, typically the following phases develop: magnetic insulator (with in-plane spins), nonmagnetic narrow-band semiconductor, and nonmagnetic band insulator.

Opis:
The aim of the presented work was to characterize single-walled carbon nanotubes as well as multi-walled carbon nanotubes by transmission electron microscopy, the Raman spectroscopy and magnetization measurements to obtain information about their size, structure, and magnetic properties. We show that having different carbon nanotubes one can easily distinguish the single-wall or multi-wall carbon nanotubes and determine their quality. The obtained results show that carbon nanotubes can be diamagnetic or ferromagnetic depending on their structural parameters.
