Opis:
Neutron reflectometry is an important technique for studying the composition and structure of thin films and layered media on a nanometer scale. Neutrons are particularly useful as probes of organic and magnetic materials since the information that can be obtained is often unique. Furthermore, the fact that neutrons traverse relatively large distances in single crystalline materials, such as silicon, permit investigations in diverse sample environments. The fundamental theoretical principles and experimental methodology of neutron reflectometry are presented, in addition to several illustrative examples of measurements relevant to polymer science, biology, electrochemistry, and magnetism.

Opis:
We have been systematically developing strategies for making new perovskite manganites with novel magnetic and electronic properties. This effort requires a two-fold approach: understanding the dependence of properties on chemical and structural factors and development of the ability to synthesize desired compounds. We show that, similar to other single valent 3d systems, the magnetic superexchange interactions in AMnO$\text{}_{3}$ manganites (A = rare or alkaline earth's) are dependent on the Mn-O-Mn bond angle which is a function of interatomic distances A-O and Mn-O. The local structural disorder on the A-site suppresses magnetic interactions. Recently, by comparing disordered (randomly mixed La/Ba) and ordered (forming Ba/La/Ba layers along the c-axes) perovskites we have demonstrated much more conspicuous effects of structural and charge disorder for mixed-valent manganites. We show that by stabilizing the ordered structure; i.e., by suppressing local structural and charge disorder on the A-site, a substantial increase in T$\text{}_{C}$ from 340 to 365~K can be achieved. A similar control of order on the Mn-site was achieved for SrMn$\text{}_{1-y}$Ga$\text{}_{y}$ O$\text{}_{3-\text{}_{y}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ compounds near y=0.5, while SrMn$\text{}_{1-y}$Fe$\text{}_{y}$O$\text{}_{3}$ compounds are always randomly mixed. To achieve these compounds, we have been systematically developing special synthesis techniques for extending chemical composition ranges far beyond those previously achieved, developing rules for predicting which compositions should be possible to produce by these special techniques, and establishing methods for selectively ordering or disordering mixtures of metal atoms on the A- or Mn-sites.

The time-of-flight neutron diffraction data were collected for two Fe$\text{}_{3-y}$Zn$\text{}_{y}$O$\text{}_{4}$ powder samples showing different order of the Verwey transition: y=0.0072 - first order, y=0.0249 - second order. Measurements were performed on spallation neutron source in ISIS Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. At low temperatures (below Verwey transition temperature T$\text{}_{V}$) clear splitting of certain reflections characteristic of rhombohedral distortion was observed for both samples. We found that this distortion is much bigger for the sample exhibiting first-order than for the sample showing second-order transition.

Opis:
Temperature and frequency dependences of the electric permittivity in mixed monomer-polymer single crystals of the diacetylene pTS (2,4-hexadiynylene bis(p-toluenesulphonate)) are reported. The dependences were determined in the temperature range 100-250 K, and in the frequency range 100 Hz - 1 MHz. Two types of single crystals were studied: nearly-fully polymerized ones, and those containing ca. 20% of polymer in the monomer matrix. The dynamics is characterized by a high-frequency response (v ≫ 3 GHz) which corresponds to the soft mode analysed previously by the Raman and neutron inelastic scatterings. At low frequencies (v ≤ 1 kHz), another component is observed, its dielectric intensity peaking around the transition temperature in the fully polymerized crystals. The results are consistent with the results obtained from NMR and neutron scattering experiments.

One-magnon excitations in MBE-grown A$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te layers (where A = Cd, Zn, Mg and x>0.7) were investigated by means of the Raman scattering measurements at low temperatures (≈20 K). The composition dependence of the anisotropy energy - as extracted from these measurements - is discussed. Further, the elastic neutron scattering measurements were performed in layers of cubic MnTe, which constitute the end point material of the ternary alloys series. Abundance of variously oriented antiferromagnetic domains in MnTe layers as a function of temperature was studied. We confirm occurrence of a pronounced magnetostriction effect.

Opis:
The low dimensional structures containing III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors were intensively investigated in the last few years because of the variety of their potential applications. The aim of the present work was to study the interlayer exchange coupling in the short period GaMnAs/GaAs superlattices containing 16 or 8 GaMnAs monolayers. Samples with the magnetic layers corresponding to the mixed crystal composition with 5% or 6% of Mn were grown by MBE technique and characterized by both high-resolution X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering methods. Folded acoustic phonons were observed for the first time for this particular quantum system in the Raman scattering spectra. The interlayer exchange coupling in selected superlattices was investigated by both elastic neutron scattering (diffraction) and polarized neutron reflectivity measurements. Presence of the smooth interfaces and the stability of the superlattice period were confirmed by neutron reflectometry data. Ferromagnetic correlation of the magnetization vector in subsequent GaMnAs magnetic layers was demonstrated by both experimental methods.

Opis:
The complementarity of synchrotron derived ultrahigh resolution X-ray and neutron protein crystallography is explored via an ensemble of plant lectin concanavalin A crystal structures. Thus a resume of a study of a cryo 0.94Å and a neutron (+X-ray) protein crystal 2.4Å structure at room temperature is made and these are then compared in their efficiency to determine the positions of the bound solvent atoms i.e. as hydrogens or deuteriums. First results are also presented of comparisons of two ultrahigh resolution protein crystal structures, the 0.94Å and a new 0.92Å structure. Thus the variability of the two cryo structures, at very fine detail, is described; this variability is in the multiple occupancies of side chains. Overall, one can see that a "complete" structure definition, with today's experimental capabilities, is possible and can include structure ensemble variations.

Optical phonon dispersion for β-HgS was measured by the neutron scattering for the first time. The results confirmed theoretically predicted anomalous behavior of phonon modes in this material, resulting probably from high ionicity of mercury sulphide and large difference of Hg and S atomic mass. Influence of the isotopic effects on the TO-phonon mode for HgSe and HgS is analyzed. The possible observation of such effects in IR reflectivity spectra taken for HgSe at low temperature is discussed.

Neutron and X-ray diffraction patterns of α and β powders as well as of sintered SiC were analysed by a multiphase Rietveld method. It is shown that structural models combined of large period polytypes can be used to approximate the disordering of these polytype structures. The hexagonality of the samples could be terminated with reproducibility 1-2% using different combinations of large-period polytypes. It follows that the usual classification into α and β SiC is an oversimplification. The polytype behaviour of SiC powders and the role of twinning of cubic layer stackings is discussed. Distribution functions of stacking sequences of different length in α and β phases are derived.

The aim of this account is to present the use and the advantages of different experimental and theoretical methods in the study of the structural and spectroscopic properties of rare earth (RE) oxyfluorides. The structural characterization was carried out with the X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques combined with the analysis of the acquired data with the Rietveld profile refinement method. The detailed spectroscopic studies were also used by employing the optical absorption and luminescence as well as inelastic neutron scattering data. Simple spectroscopic measurements gave, however, only qualitative description of the spectroscopic properties studied. More sophisticated and quantitative means was obtained by the application of the phenomenological crystal field theory to the spectroscopic data. On the other hand, the structural data was also used as initial input to electrostatic point charge calculation in order to extract the spectroscopic information. The structural and spectroscopic studies comprised the verification of the exact crystal and energy level structures and the characterization of the different interactions modifying the spectroscopic properties of the RE$\text{}^{3+}$ ions. Finally, the results from the theoretical model were used to explain the evolution of the crystal field effect on the 4f$\text{}^{N}$ energy level structure of the RE$\text{}^{3+}$ ion in the RE oxyfluorides series.

High-damping alloys with the magnetomechanical damping mechanism, based on the Fe-Cr system, have been studied. It has been shown that the direct investigation of the magnetic domain structure in the bulk materials using the neutron refraction method allows one to obtain important quantitative information concerning the formation of the high-damping state. The dependence of the damping capacity on the average magnetic domain size was found to possess a sharp maximum, thus revealing a range of the optimal domain sizes. The results obtained are important for the development of the technology of high-damping materials.

Opis:
Magnetic and neutron diffraction measurements of RCuIn (R = Nd, Tb, Ho, Er) are reported. The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure. The ZrNiAl lattice originates from a distortion of a kagomélattice. The studied compounds are antiferromagnets with the Néel temperature equal to 4.9 K for R = Nd, 14.5 K for R = Tb, 4.5 K for R = Ho and 3.5 K for R = Er. The magnetic ordering is described by the propagation vectorwe k = (1/2, 1/2, $k_z$) with $k_z$ equal to 0.161(6) for R = Nd, 0.2213(5) for R = Tb, 0.2510(3) for R = Ho and 0 for R = Er. The magnetic structure is noncollinear with magnetic moments in the basal plane for R = Nd, Tb and Ho and collinear with magnetic moments parallel to the c-axis for R = Er. The observed magnetic ordering results from the competition between exchange interactions of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type, the geometrical frustration of the rare-earth magnetic moments and the influence of the crystal electric field. The latter affects the direction of magnetic moments and is responsible for the magnetic crystalline anisotropy.
