Opis:
Nasal blockage belongs to the most common symptoms of nasal diseases in vocal tract area. At the same frequency there appear acoustic symptoms, existing as the change of human voice color. Vocal and articulation disorders of the ear, nose ane throat are usually observed in the form of closed rhinolalia and this observation can be performed both by patients and other listeners as well. Nasal polyps and nasal septum deviation are frequent reason of nasal blockage connected in consequence with decreased nasal ventilation. One of the main principles of the surgical treatment performed in mentioned situations is the restoration of nasal patency. The evaluation of the influence of nasal surgery on intensification of acoustic symptoms depends on verification of parameters of the human speech signal, so it was necessary to apply objective methods. That allowed to combine results of acoustic analysis with patient's subjective feeling and rhinomanometric evaluation of nasal patency. The main purpose of this research was to objectively evaluate the influence of surgical treatment improving nasal patency on deformation of the voice of operated patients.

Opis:
Partial blocking of mesopores in the ordered MCM-41 silica by DC550 silicon oil was proposed as a preparation method of the material with controlled porosity and fixed pore size. The porosity of the samples with various content of DC550 was examined with the use of low temperature nitrogen sorption and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. It was shown that the oil blocks the primary pores by forming the plugs near its entrances, but also partially locates in the interparticle spaces. The comparison of the results obtained from both investigation techniques was used to make the first attempt to obtain the calibration of ortho-positronium intensity, depending on pore volume. This is necessary to improve the utility of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy as a porosimetric technique. The need to take the migration of positronium to larger free volume into account is discussed.

Opis:
The comparison of pore size distributions obtained with the use of two porosimetric methods: low temperature nitrogen sorption (LN2) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), was performed for porous silica monoliths. Four investigated samples were prepared under various synthesis conditions. Nitrogen sorption showed the presence of bottle-shaped pores in all investigated samples. In addition, it seems that the presence of methanol during synthesis influences porosity to a greater extent than organic additives. Quite good agreement between the LN2 and PALS results was observed only for the silica monolith synthesized with β-cyclodextrins as pore directing agent. The biggest discrepancy in the results obtained from these two techniques was observed for the silica gel synthesized with no additives. The origin of such discrepancies, taking into account the shape of pore size distribution and deficiencies of data analysis techniques, is discussed.

Opis:
Silicon organic thin films have been prepared by RF hollow cathode plasma chemical vapor deposition system, from hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSN) as the source compound, under different plasma conditions, namely feed gas and applied RF power. The feed gas has been changed from argon to nitrogen, and the power has been varied between 100 W and 300 W in $N_{2}$/HMDSN plasma. The plasma active species (electrons, ion flux rate, and UV radiation) contributing to the films growth mechanisms have been identified by electrical probes and optical emission spectroscopic analysis. The films have been investigated for their thickness and deposition rate, using quartz crystal microbalance, and sensing properties relating to humidity and gas ($NH_{3},$ $CO_{2}$ and $O_{2}$) sorptive investigations, using the piezoelectric effect of quartz crystals of the quartz crystal microbalance. The effect of the different plasma conditions on the plasma phase characteristics and deposited thin films properties, as well as the correlations between deposition rate and plasma characteristics and between sorptive properties, water contact angles and thin films surface morphology are reported.

Opis:
In the paper results of studies of $MnFe_2O_4$/MCM-41 nanocomposites have been presented. The influence of manganese ferrite loading on changes of porous properties of mesoporous MCM-41 structure was studied by means of $N_2$ sorption/desorption method and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Disappearance of the longest-lived ortho-positronium component ($τ_5$) of pure MCM-41 mesoporous material in the positron annihilation lifetime spectra of $MnFe_2O_4$/MCM-41 measured in vacuum is a result of either o-Ps quenching or the Ps inhibition mechanism. Filling of pores in the studied nanocomposites by air at ambient pressure causes partial reappearance of the ($τ_5$) component except for the sample with maximum ferrite content. Both the ($τ_5$) component lifetime and intensity are suppressed together with increasing $MnFe_2O_4$ content by chemical quenching and inhibition of Ps formation occur. Observed anti-quenching effect of air is a result of two processes: neutralization of some surface active centres acting as inhibitors and considerably weaker paramagnetic quenching by $O_2$ molecules.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of selected organic compounds such as acetic acid and formaldehyde on the historical glass objects of corrosion processes. This is a very important problem for the field of conservation and restoration of glass of art. Glass objects exhibited in museum display cases can be suffered by evaporating organic compounds which undergo to reaction with leached glass elements to create corrosion deposit on their surface. The proposed method called glass sensors has been used to identify results of impact of various external factors on the tested glass. Due to aggressive environment for the objects there created corrosion phenomena. Glass sensor were prepared as reproduced XVIII-cent. materials. The current studies were carried out by modern physico-chemical methods such as optical, metallography, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. These techniques allow to determine the composition of the corrosion layers as well as their structure. The issues raised in this work have been studied following an interdisciplinary approach. The information obtained by using different techniques provides a valuable source of knowledge about the chemical reactions taking place on the surface of the glass. The results derived from this work are useful for the design and implementation of exhibition recommendations and better planning of conservation tasks.
