Opis:
Diffusion of potassium adsorbate on the W(112) plane with preadsorbed nickel was investigated by means of the autocorrelation function of field emission current fluctuations. A comparison of the experimental autocorrelation function with that of a theoretical calculation by Gesley and Swanson gives the surface diffusion coefficient of potassium. From its temperature dependence the diffusion activation energy at several Ni pre-coverages for a constant potassium coverage (Θ$\text{}_{K}$=0.4) is derived. The dependence of the activation energy for potassium surface diffusion on the nickel coverage - first reduction and then an increase with increasing Ni coverage - is observed. This is in agreement with the results obtained from the spectral analysis of the field emission current fluctuations of the same system. The decrease is understood to be a result of the smoothing effect caused by Ni atoms on the W(112) plane.

Opis:
The quantum Hall effect is a set of phenomena observed at low temperature in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. It manifests itself as a quantization of the nondiagonal elements (ρ$\text{}_{xy}$) of the resistivity tensor accompanied by simultaneous vanishing ρ$\text{}_{xx}$ for ranges of the magnetic field. For the integer quantum Hall effect ρ$\text{}_{xy}$= h/νe$\text{}^{2}$, where h is the Planck constant, e - charge of an electron andν is an integer, while for the fractional quantum Hall effectν is a simple fraction. In spite of similar phenomenology deep and profound differences exist between these two effects. In the lecture the precision of the Hall quantization in the integer quantum Hall effect and briefly new types of quantum fluids observed in the fractional quantum Hall effect are discussed. Some recent theoretical and experimental discoveries connected with quantum Hall liquids are also mentioned.

The results of comparative studies of the effect of hydrogenation upon structural and optical properties of the commercial soda-lime silicate glasses doped either with monovalent silver or copper have been presented. The samples were characterised by means of the scanning and transmission electron microscopy and the UV-VIS-IR absorption spectroscopy. It has been shown that the annealing of suitably ion-exchanged specimens in gaseous hydrogen atmosphere could be considered as an effective procedure for obtaining composite materials of expected properties correlated with the induced changes of the morphology of both the glassy matrix and the dopant.

Opis:
The phononic band structures of two-dimensional solid phononic crystals with different lattice and scatterer symmetry are studied numerically, with three types of lattice (square, triangular, and rectangular) and four different scatterer shapes (circle, hexagon, square, and rectangle) considered. XY and Z vibration modes are investigated separately. Two types of phononic crystal are considered: one composed of high-density rods embedded in a low-density matrix, the other of low-density rods in a high-density matrix. In the former case, lattice type and polarization being fixed, the broadest gaps are obtained when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice (the shape of a rod is identical with that of the first Brillouin zone); the largest gap width values are observed in triangular lattice-based crystals (compared to those based on the square and rectangular lattices), the shape of the corresponding first Brillouin zone being closest to a circle. These rules do not apply to structures in which the density of the rod material is lower than that of the matrix. In this case, when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice, gaps either fail to appear at all, or are much narrower than in other configurations. The effect of other material parameter values (such as the longitudinal and transversal velocity values) on the relation between the energy gap width and the scatterer symmetry is found to be much lesser.

Opis:
nextnano$\text{}^{3}$ is a simulation tool that aims at providing global insight into the basic physical properties of realistic three-dimensional mesoscopic semiconductor structures. It focuses on quantum mechanical properties such as the global electronic structure, optical properties, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields for virtually any geometry and combination of semiconducting materials. For the calculation of the carrier dynamics a drift-diffusion model based on a quantum-mechanically calculated density is employed. In this paper we present an overview of the capabilities of nextnano$\text{}^{3}$ and discuss some of the main equations that are implemented into the code. As examples, we first discuss the strain tensor components and the piezoelectric effect associated with a compressively strained InAs layer for different growth directions, secondly, we calculate self-consistently the quantum mechanical electron density of a Double Gate MOSFET, then we compare the intersubband transitions in a multi-quantum well structure that have been obtained with a single-band effective mass approach and with an 8-band k·p model, and finally, we calculate the energy spectrum of a structure in a uniform magnetic field.

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulated annealing technique coupled with density functional theory in the local density approximation implemented in Spanish initiative for electronic simulations with thousands of atoms method is employed to search the ground state geometries of silicon clusters containing 10-16 atoms. We found a number of new isomers which are not previously reported. The atoms in all these clusters exhibit pronounced preference for residing on the surface. The binding energies increase while the highest occupied-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap generally decreases with the increase in clusters size.

We report the experimental results of the low temperature (T = 4.2 K) low-frequency current fluctuations measurements in the single-barrier resonant tunneling GaAs/AlAs/GaAs device with Siδ-doping in the center of the 10 nm thick AlAs barrier. The dimensions of the device were 200μm by 200μm. For the biasing voltages 0.1 V<|U|<1 V we observed the Fano factors between F = 0.7 and F = 0.95. We explain it by the existence of the trapping centers/imperfections/resonant levels inside the barrier participating in the transport for this range of voltages. Only for the smallest biasing voltages the Fano factor tends to F = 1, expected for a highly nontransparent barrier.

We measured the activation of resistivity at quantum Hall minima in high mobility two-dimensional electron gas confined at AlGaN/GaN interface. The effective g-factor and effective mass was deduced. The electron-electron interactions modify both quantities compared to their bare band values. It is found that the influence of interactions is much more pronounced onto g-factor than effective mass. The relative spin susceptibility was also calculated and compared with available theories. The best agreement was found with the ideal two-dimensional gas model in random phase approximation.

We investigate tunneling times of a particle with energy dependent effective mass for a one-dimensional real potential. General relations between phase, group and dwell times are obtained for a desired potential shape. For the textbook case of a real rectangular potential barrier the explicit relations for relevant times are derived, which reveal that the nonparabolicity, depending on the energy of incident particle, may substantially increase the group time in realistic structures. Further, we extend this theory to the case of absorptive media described by complex potentials, via introduction of a new absorptive tunneling time τ$\text{}_{a}$. Depending on whether the short wavelength or long wavelength limit is considered, maximization of τ$\text{}_{a}$ results in a very different shape of a complex rectangular potential.

Photoacoustic effect and photothermal radiometry were applied to characterise the thermal properties of diamond crystallites which were coated by a Cu film, a Cr film and a Cr-Cu film. The Cu-coated diamond exhibits a considerable thermal barrier at the Cu-diamond interface which had disappeared for the crystallites with a thin bond Cr layer between diamond and Cu. The comparison of the responses of both measurement techniques reveals the non-negligible influence of the optical absorption in the visible and IR on the deduced thermal parameters.

Investigation results of acoustic emission signals coming from partial discharges within chosen generator coil bar, in relation to measurement results of apparent charge introduced by partial discharges sources, are presented in the article. Analysis is based on amplitude distributions calculated for acoustic emission signals, ordered at different measuring points for different values of the supply voltage. In order to assign acoustic emission signal to its advance degree a descriptor named by an acronym ADP (defined by authors) is calculated for each amplitude distribution. Descriptor families describing acoustic emission signals measured at particular measuring points (for different supply voltages) are presented in relation to apparent charge introduced by acoustic emission sources. These families concerning acoustic emission signals, measured at different measuring points for identical supply voltage, enable us to locate acoustic emission sources with maximum activity.

A new type of the monolithic acoustic scanner based on a near-surface quasicomposite two-dimensional array, implemented in the solid elastic substrate was proposed. It provides a simple means of focusing and scanning a beam of acoustic waves, radiated into the depth of the elastic solid substrate. A chirped surface acoustic wave is converted into a focused bulk wave by scattering from an array composed of a 2D periodic system of regions with varying material parameters, located at the surface of a surface acoustic waves substrate. In the paper, a simple numerical simulation model is presented to analyse the influences of the dynamical and geometrical parameters of the surface structure, as well as the influences of incident surface acoustic waves signal profile on the focal distribution.

An analytical model of the operation of recently invented ultracompact explosive-driven shock-wave ferromagnetic generators that utilize longitudinal (shock wave propagates along the magnetization vector) and transverse (shock wave propagates across the magnetization vector) shock wave demagnetization of $Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ hard ferromagnets, and an analytical technique for calculation of amplitudes of the current pulse produced by the generators were developed. The model utilizes the magnitude of the energy product, $(BH)_\text{max}$, and the magnetostatic energy of the hard ferromagnetic element of the ferromagnetic generator as parameters for determining ferromagnetic generator pulse generation, and it does not consider the magnitude of remnant magnetization, B_{r}, of the ferromagnetic material. The developed technique for calculation of the current pulse amplitude produced by the ferromagnetic generator provides comprehensive and accurate results. Amplitudes of calculated ferromagnetic generator output currents are in good agreement with experimentally obtained data.
