Opis:
Density (ρ), refractive index (n), ultrasonic velocity (u), and viscosity (η) were measured for the binary mixtures formed by butylamine with 1-butanol and tert-butanol at temperatures 293, 303, and 313 K over the entire composition range. Excess molar volume V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, molar refraction deviation ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, deviation in ultrasonic velocity Δu, viscosity deviation Δη, and excess Gibb's free energy of activation for viscous flow ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were derived from the experimental data and the computed results were fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were plotted against the mole fraction of butylamine. The observed positive and negative values of excess parameters for both the mixtures were explained on the basis of intermolecular interactions present in these mixtures. The higher negative values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$ and ΔR$\text{}_{m}$ and positive values of Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ for butylamine + 1-butanol mixture suggest that specific interactions are taking place in butylamine + 1-butanol mixture, while weak dipole-dipole induced forces and dispersive forces seem to be responsible for butylamine + tert-butanol mixture. Furthermore, different empirical relations were used to correlate the binary refractive indices. An excellent agreement was found between experimental and theoretical values.

Opis:
The paper presents design and parameters of a multifunction ultrasonic generator manufactured by Tele and Radio Research Institute. Efficient usage of ultrasonic welding and cutting technology depends on the ability to precisely control process parameters and tune those parameters to suit particular needs. Ultrasonic generator is responsible for such control and tuning. Presented design incorporates powerful 32 bit Cortex M4 microcontroller with floating point unit which allows using modern signal processing methods to calculate parameters of ultrasonic stack in real time. Calculated parameters, especially impedance of the stack are used to estimate load level and identify phases of the welding process such as melting of the welded material. Precise control of the output signal is possible due to innovative design of the direct digital signal synthesis unit implemented in programmable logic device (CPLD). Resonant inverter topology of the generator front end ensures high electrical efficiency of the device. Designed generator is equipped with various communication interfaces such as USB host and slave, Ethernet, Bluetooth, CAN and RS485. Multiple digital inputs and outputs together with load cell interface, 4-20 mA receiver and 0-10 V analog input enable the generator to monitor and control entire ultrasonic welding system without the need of a PLC unit.

A theoretical analysis of variations in the propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves in liquid dielectrics in an external DC electric field was performed. Measurements of these variations in transformer oil in dependence on the field strength and temperature were made applying the phase method. To express the experimental results in graphical form numerical procedure of interpolation in Lagrange polynomials was used. The experimentally obtained variations in the velocity are compared with those predicted theoretically by the formulae derived.

Opis:
The ultrasonic velocity and density of methanol solutions of N,N-diisobutylformamide (DBFA) were measured at -5, 5 and 15° C over the entire concentration range. The compressibility, excess compressibility, partial molar compressibility, excess molar volume, partial molar volume were calculated. The concentration dependencies of the velocity and density are nonlinear. On taking account of the results for excess molar volume and excess molar compressibility, the minima of these functions are ascribed to the complex formation type CH$\text{}_{3}$OH:DBFA and CH$\text{}_{3}$OH:2 x DBFA. These complexes are formed by hydrogen bond between methanol and N,N-diisobutylformamide molecules. The strong changes in the concentration dependencies of partial molar volume and partial molar compressibility (within range 0...0.1 mol. fraction amide) show that methanol and DBFA have strong interactions in the low-mole-fraction regions, too.

Opis:
This work deals with the problem of ultrasound in the context of biomedical and clinical applications. Ultrasonic waves can be used for the separation of cells in human blood. Under the influence of ultrasonic waves cells included in the liquid experience a certain characteristic displacement was referred to as drift. Presented work suggests that only radiation pressure should be taken into account as a mechanism of drifting in this situation. It has been demonstrated that the growth of cells concentration around the points of stable equilibrium is exponential. The time constant of this growth was estimated and the formulae which determine the time needed to obtain the assumed concentration increase have been derived. The theoretical studies of acoustic agglomeration of particles in the liquid have become a new focus in the ultrasonic research.

Measurements of the absorption coefficient and propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves in critical benzonitrile and isooctane mixture are reported for the frequency range of 5-25 MHz and temperatures ΔT = T - T$\text{}_{c}$ from 0.15 to 20 K. The analysis of the experimental results is based on dynamic scaling theory leading to good agreement with the theoretical predictions, especially in the reduced frequency range 1 < ω* < 100. The adiabatic coupling constant g is calculated and compared to the experimental value.

Specific heat ratio (γ), pseudo-Grüneisen parameter (Γ), heat capacity $(C_p)$ and effective Debye temperature $(θ_{D})$ for binary system of tetrahydrofuran with o-cresol and methanol respectively, were calculated using the experimentally measured densities, velocities and viscosities of the pure liquids and their mixtures over the whole composition range and at T = 293, 303, 313 K. The excess pseudo-Grüneisen parameter $(Γ ^{E})$, excess molar isentropic compressibility $(K_{s}^{E})$ and excess acoustic impedance $(Z^{E})$ were also calculated. The excess deviation functions have been correlated using Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The observed values of the excess parameters plotted against the mole fraction of tetrahydrofuran have been explained on the basis of intermolecular interaction suggesting strong interaction in tetrahydrofuran + o-cresol than in tetrahydrofuran + methanol. Partial molar isentropic compressibility at infinite dilution and their excess values were calculated for each component. Sanchez theory, Goldsach-Sarvas volume fraction statistics, Sudgen's relation, Flory-Patterson-Rastogi and Brock and Bird model were used with the Aurebach relation to compute theoretically the values of ultrasonic velocities at varying temperatures. The velocity deviations were estimated in terms of average percentage deviations. Internal pressure for both the systems were calculated theoretically and discussed on the basis of relative applicability of the models in theoretical estimations. The isothermal compressibility $(k_T)$, for these binary mixtures were theoretically evaluated by using the Flory statistical theory and five hard sphere models and compared with the experimental values.

Opis:
A novel estimation of temperature changes inside soft tissues has been proposed in sub-ablation range, i.e. ≈ 20°C-48°C. This estimation has been obtained by studying statistical properties of backscattered ultrasonic signals. Two different procedures of heating/cooling have been performed in which the RF echoes have been registered from soft tissue phantom in the first procedure, and from soft tissue in vitro in the second one. Calculated envelopes of signals registered in time points during heating/cooling experiments have been treated as a statistical sample drawn from a random variable with three different distributions, namely the Rayleigh distribution, the Nakagami distribution, and the K-distribution. The histograms obtained in subsequent time moments have been fitted to the three distributions. Dependencies of their shape and scale parameters on temperature have been calculated. It is concluded that the shape parameter of the K-distribution can be chosen as the best marker of temperature changes in both experiments. The choice of the marker has been made by analysis of temperature dependencies of all calculated parameters and by comparing the quality of fitting all histograms to the considered distributions. Besides, the chosen marker as a function of temperature exhibits the closest shape to temperature/time function experimentally measured.

A method of surface potential determination in semiconductors by means of the transverse acoustoelectric effect is described. The results of theoretical analysis of the transverse acoustoelectric voltage versus surface potential and different surface electrical parameters in indium phosphate single crystals are presented. The experimental results of the surface potential investigations have been obtained after various surface treatments in InP(110) and InP(100) crystals. A strong influence of the chemical and mechanical surface treatments upon the surface potential values has been observed from the measurements. The surface InP(110) was more sensitive to different surface treatments. The changes of the surface potential values were about two times greater for InP(110) than for InP(100) samples. The surface potentials after surface treatments obtained by the acoustics method were of the range -0.08 [V] to -0.22 [V].

The method of Passynski of calculating the solvation numbers from compressibility was applied to solutions of short-chained normal alcohols in n-heptane and n-propanol. The dependences of solvation numbers on length of the solute molecules are surprisingly similar for both solvents. Applicability of the acoustic method for determining the solvation numbers in nonaquous systems, as well as for investigation of intermolecular interactions in them was proved. Some structural similarity of associated alcohol and hydrocarbon in liquid state is suggested.

Opis:
A universal method for selecting piezoceramic transducers used in high power ultrasonic devices such as ultrasonic welding and cutting systems has been presented. The key element of such systems is a high power ultrasonic sandwich transducer consisting of a stack of piezoceramic transducers mounted between two masses. Because of relatively large dispersion of piezoceramic transducer parameters between production lots, they must be selected in order to obtain a high quality and long-life sandwich transducer. Presented selection method consists of three stages. First, the parametric identification of the Butterworth-Van Dyke equivalent circuit model is performed based on piezoceramic transducer electrical impedance measurements. Next, the electrical impedance frequency samples are estimated using the identified Butterworth-Van Dyke model. Finally, the k-means clustering algorithm is used to select the best fitted piezoceramic transducer sets.

The phononic band structures of two-dimensional solid phononic crystals with different lattice and scatterer symmetry are studied numerically, with three types of lattice (square, triangular, and rectangular) and four different scatterer shapes (circle, hexagon, square, and rectangle) considered. XY and Z vibration modes are investigated separately. Two types of phononic crystal are considered: one composed of high-density rods embedded in a low-density matrix, the other of low-density rods in a high-density matrix. In the former case, lattice type and polarization being fixed, the broadest gaps are obtained when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice (the shape of a rod is identical with that of the first Brillouin zone); the largest gap width values are observed in triangular lattice-based crystals (compared to those based on the square and rectangular lattices), the shape of the corresponding first Brillouin zone being closest to a circle. These rules do not apply to structures in which the density of the rod material is lower than that of the matrix. In this case, when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice, gaps either fail to appear at all, or are much narrower than in other configurations. The effect of other material parameter values (such as the longitudinal and transversal velocity values) on the relation between the energy gap width and the scatterer symmetry is found to be much lesser.

The paper presents methods of designing sonotrodes, working in varied mechanical vibration modes in high power application regime such as rotary ultrasonic welding systems. The aim of the sonotrode design process is to optimize its shape to achieve the best energy efficiency for a given welding process. Sonotrode geometry influences the power transferred to the welded element because it determines the vibration amplitude distribution in the sonotrode. The most popular applications use sonotrodes designed for axial vibration. Conducted research have shown that the optimal displacement and strain distribution is achieved for sonotrodes working in various vibration modes such as axial, transverse, radial or their compositions. In the paper examples of multimode sonotrode models for various rotary ultrasonic welding technologies have been presented.

We propose a novel method to calculate acousto-optic figure of merit in crystals. Calculations are performed in laboratory coordinate system where Z'-axis is collinear with wave vector of ultrasound and the Fresnel equation is considered as an equation on the third component of refractive index vector. The method is applicable to both uniaxial and biaxial crystals. In this paper, we compared obtained values of acousto-optic figure of merit with values from literature data for uniaxial crystals such as paratellurite, lithium niobate, tellurium and for biaxial crystals such as lead and strontium tetraborates. Calculations in paratellurite were carried out for slow-shear acoustic wave propagating along [110] crystal axis. In lithium niobate crystal, we perform comparison with results for geometry of acousto-optic interaction where acoustic wave vector forms 88° angle with X crystal axis and 150.4° angle with Z crystal axis. In tellurium crystal, we investigate geometries applied in infrared deflectors. In $SrB_4O_7$ and $PbB_4O_7$ crystals we analyze acousto-optic characteristics of slow-shear mode propagating along [100] crystal axis. Spatial distributions of acousto-optic figure of merit and acoustic frequency for the mentioned acousto-optic interaction geometries are presented.

Opis:
We present results on theoretical and first experimental investigation of a new regime of acousto-optic interaction existing in acoustically anisotropic medium. We defined the new regime as "semi-collinear" or "mixed interaction" since it combined properties of the traditional non-collinear diffraction and the pure collinear interaction. The peculiar phenomenon was registered in the tellurium dioxide crystal due to the extremely strong elastic anisotropy of the material. Application of a specific cut of the crystal provided observation of the effect in the middle infrared at the optical wavelength 3.39 μm and at the acoustic frequencies limited to 300 MHz. The observed interaction was characterized by a non-collinear propagation of incident light with respect to acoustic energy flow and simultaneously a collinear propagation of diffracted radiation along the acoustic energy flow. A brief theoretical analysis of the interaction based on wave vector diagrams and two-dimensional coupled wave equations is included in the presentation. Finally, we describe in the paper, the setup and basic details of the carried out acousto-optic experiment.
