Opis:
From various types of scintillating materials lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) has the highest luminosity and the greatest potential of application in high-energy radiation detectors. Due to the small critical angle of total internal reflection the enhancement of the extraction of light outside a scintillator is a challenge. We study numerically the influence of the effective refractive index layer on the transmittance of LYSO crystal. It is possible to realize such layer by sub-wavelength patterning of crystal surface using for example focused ion beam. The enhancement of transmittance of LYSO crystal up to 100% as well as the possibility to tune the positions of transmittance maxima have been shown.

Opis:
A compact soft X-ray microscope based on a nitrogen double-stream gas puff target soft X-ray source, operating at He-like nitrogen spectral line at the wavelength of λ =2.88 nm is presented. The desk-top size microscope was successfully demonstrated in transmission mode using the Fresnel zone-plate objective and it is suitable for soft X-ray source microscopy in the "water window" spectral range (λ = 2.3÷ 4.4 nm). Details about the soft X-ray source source, the microscope and an example of application in the biomedical field are shown and discussed.

Opis:
In this paper, an optical microscope objective with large numerical number is inserted into a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and this system is adopted to detect the surface morphologies of two ruled transmission gratings with area scale to a micrometer. The object waves transmitting from the gratings interfere with spherical reference wave, and the interferograms constructed are recorded by a high-resolution CCD. The surface maps of the gratings are retrieved from the interferograms, and the results are confirmed by the measurement with an atomic force microscope, with detection errors in nanometer scale. This work provides an optical non-destructive method for precise detection of small-area sophisticated object surfaces with an optical microscope objective.

Opis:
The work presented in this paper is focused on investigation of the spectral properties of the long-period fiber gratings combined with the liquid crystals, named liquid crystal long-period fiber gratings. The experiments carried out showed that the proposed designs of the liquid crystal long-period fiber gratings can offer very interesting spectral properties and can introduce a new level of sensitivity. In particular, a high-efficiency thermal tuning of the long-period fiber gratings coated with low-birefringence liquid crystal layers could be achieved and gave rise to a fast and wide switching ability of the attenuation bands within their transmission spectrum.

Opis:
The main aim of the presented work is the integration of a long-period fiber grating and a liquid crystal into a hybrid structure, in order to develop an innovative fiber optic device controlled by an external electric field. The studied long-period fiber grating was fabricated using UV irradiation in a boron co-doped fiber (PS1250/1500, manufactured by Fibercore). As a liquid crystal we used a typical 5CB nematic liquid crystal. The sensing mechanism of the proposed loss filter relies on long-period fiber grating attenuation bands sensitivity to optical properties of the liquid crystal layer. The results obtained show that the long-period fiber grating with a nanosized liquid crystal layer exhibits one order of magnitude higher electrical sensitivity and a lower level of the voltage control than the long-period fiber grating with a micro-sized liquid crystal layer.

Opis:
Theoretical analysis of propagation properties in a hollow-core Bragg fiber for bio-sensing applications has been demonstrated. Based on the Bragg fiber we propose a resonant sensor that operates on changes in refractive index of aqueous solution placed inside the hollow core. By using the transfer matrix method we analyzed the confinement loss of the $TE_{01}$ mode in the hollow-core Bragg fiber. We have shown the influence of the fiber geometry on the changes in the confinement loss. Spectral sensitivity and resolution of the sensor are also presented.

Axial and transversal orientational configurations of a nematic liquid crystal 6CHBT are realized inside glassy cylindrical capillaries by using photoalignment technique. It is demonstrated that this principle can be effectively used to enforce liquid crystal alignment in the desirable direction. It can be applied to control liquid crystal alignment in the photonic crystal fibers showing great potential for the modern telecommunication technologies.

Opis:
We discuss the possibility of light control by means of light diffraction by space charge waves which are the periodic domain trains induced at some circumstances in GaAs Gunn effect diode. The two possible regimes of the proposed device are considered: the first one which is analogous to the Bragg diffraction in case of light-acoustic diffraction and the other one, which we call "intermediate", since the parameter Q which distinguishes the Raman-Nath (Q<1) and the Bragg diffraction (Q>10), in this case is≈1 (actually, only bit smaller than 1). Among the advantages of this hypothetical device are the simpler control of operation and perhaps, possibility to couple it with the waveguides and switchers for surface electromagnetic waves and other miniaturized photonic circuits.
