Opis:
The optical properties of nonlinear colloidal crystals in a distributed feedback configuration have been studied experimentally. Optical switching and bistability, optical limiting, and temporal instabilities have been observed in the transmission of these structures. The results of these experiments are compared to the theoretical predictions for the transmission properties of nonlinear periodic structures.

Opis:
We separate the electronic and nuclear contributions to the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ$\text{}_{ijkl}^{〈3〉}$ using degenerate four wave mixing. This method allows to know the physical origin of the optical nonlinearities of new soluble tetrathiafulvalene derivatives and deduce the values of the second-order hyperpolarisabilities γ. The values of γ for the studied compounds are about 10$\text{}^{5}$ greater than for CS$\text{}_{2}$.

Opis:
Optical limiting performances of acid blue 29 are investigated under irradiation by a 35 mW continuous wave He-Ne laser. The optical limiting behavior is investigated by using transmission measurement through samples with different concentrations. Our results show that the optical limiting efficiency is concentrations dependence. Induced self-diffraction patterns are observed at relatively high intensities starting from 15 mW.

Time delays for an intense transverse electric wave propagating through a slab with saturable nonlinearity are investigated. The nonlinearity is assumed in a form of the Vinetskii-Kukhtarev model, which is relevant for the slabs made of nonlinear photorefractive crystals, such as GaAs and $LiNbO_3$, which feature a saturable nonlinearity. The expressions for the group delay and the dwell time are derived and the relation between them is studied. It is shown that the difference between them has three different contributions. The first one corresponds to the self-interference associated with the dispersion of the medium surrounding the slab. The other two appear due to the nonlinearity of the slab and oblique incidence of the transverse electric wave. All the results are compared with the case of dielectric slabs with cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity.

Using chemical route a 2,3-butanedione dihydrazone (BDDH) compound was prepared. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of BDDH were investigated by using single beam z-scan technique with Q-switched, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser (λ = 532 nm) at 5 ns pulse. Effect of excitation intensity on nonlinear optical properties has been studied and found that experimental and computed values are well in agreement. Also, we found the measured nonlinear optical coefficients are nearly ten times larger than the reported. The excited state absorption cross-section of BDDH was found to be larger than that of the ground state absorption cross-section, indicating the reverse saturable absorption.

Opis:
The work is devoted to investigation of stable coloration induced by gamma radiation from $\text{}^{60}Co$ (1.25 MeV) in pure and neodymium doped $Ca_{0.28}Ba_{0.72}Nb_{2}O_{6}$ single crystals. Nature of the induced absorption is discussed. This absorption is due to charge change of native defects or ions forming of crystals (vacancy, niobium ions, etc.). The nature of color centers responsible for induced absorption is discussed.

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of $C_{60}$/poly(dimethylacetylendicarboxylate) have been studied using Z-scan technique. Experiments are performed using a CW diode laser at 635 nm wavelength and 26 mW power. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β, nonlinear refractive index n₂, Reχ³, and Imχ³ in $C_{60}$ doped poly(dimethylacetylendicarboxylate) are measured using Z-scan data. Our results show that the values of the nonlinear optical parameters (β, n₂, Reχ³, and Imχ³) of $C_{60}$ doped poly(dimethylacetylendicarboxylate) are smaller than the polymer itself.

The organic-inorganic hybrid salt: 1,1'-methylenedipyridinium pentacynidonitrosoferrate(II)pentahydrate is synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopies and elemental analysis. The third order nonlinear optical properties of the new complex in an aqueous solution have been studied using Z-scan technique. Measurements were performed for input intensities (I₀) of 437 and 241 W/cm² for the two concentrations with a CW diode laser at 635 nm wavelength. The nonlinear optical absorption coefficient (β) and nonlinear refraction (n₂) are found at 1.28×10¯³ cm/W and 10.17×10¯⁹ cm²/W, respectively. The overall results suggested that better nonlinearity was observed at a higher concentration of sample. Our results suggest that this material is considered as a promising candidate for future optical device applications.

As reported by Ritchie, the fundamental optical excitations that are confined to a metal/dielectric interface are referred as the surface plasmon polaritons. In the present study, we report on a theoretical investigation of the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons on the periodically corrugated surfaces. Tunability of these structures can be enhanced further changing the employed material.

Optical-temperature investigations of stationary and photo-induced absorption in undoped and Al (or Ga) doped Bi₁₂SiO₂₀ crystals are discussed. In the wave-number range 22000-4000 cm¯¹ under temperatures from 80 to 650 K, peculiarities of thermochromic effect have been revealed and temperature dependences of intensity of bands forming photo- and thermochromic effects have been found. A correlation between these dependences and spectra of thermostimulated current is explained.
