Opis:
The dynamics of solitary waves in second-order nonlinear materials are discussed using a multiple scales model. After making some comments on the applicability of other perturbation techniques the multiple scales approach is developed with a view to setting up a line of approach that, in principle, permits radiative effects to be modelled. After a closure condition is applied, equations for the evolution of dynamical variables are developed. Applications of these equations to loss and interactions are presented together with confirmation from numerical simulations. It is emphasised that the method is capable of extension to higher-order perturbations and, hence, into the solitary wave fusion region. The established interpretation of quasi-phase-matching fluctuations as loss is discussed and the simple problems of soliton (solitary wave) pair interactions in both loss-free and lossy media are analysed.

Opis:
Propagation of the TE electromagnetic waves in self-focusing medium is governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In this paper the stationary solutions of this equation have been systematically presented. The phase-plane method, qualitative analysis, and mechanical interpretation of the differential equations are widely used. It is well known that TE waves can be guided by a single interface between two semi-infinite media, providing that one of the media has a self-focusing (Kerr-type) nonlinearity. This special solution is called a spatial soliton. In this paper our interests are not restricted to the soliton solutions. In the context of the nonlinear substrate and cladding we have found solutions which could be useful to describe also the incident light in a nonlinear medium. This result is the main point of the paper. Some of the presented stationary solutions were already used in a similar optical context in the literature but we show a little wider class of solutions. In the last section we review and illustrate some results concerning the spatial soliton solution.

Opis:
Quadratic spatial solitons exist in media with second order nonlinearities near the phase-matching condition for frequency mixing processes involving two or three waves of different frequency. Discussed here are a number of properties of these special solitons which are different from those of other spatial solitons which rely on optically induced index changes for guiding. First, the self-guiding properties of quadratic solitons are shown to have completely different origins than solitons which rely on index changes. Second, it is shown that there exists a large variety of quadratic solitons which contain two or three distinct spectral components with relative amplitudes depending on the phase mismatch, dimensionality of the propagation geometry, the soliton power and the launching conditions. Third, under appropriate conditions, solitons can be formed even when the group velocity directions for the spectral components lead to walk-off under normal circumstances. Fourth, for type II phase-matching in bulk crystals, seeded interactions lead to saturating amplifier characteristics.

Ideas concerning the use of magnetooptic materials to control spatial solitons are introduced. It is shown that control of spatial solitons can be achieved through the use of TM modes TE-TM interactions. Potential functions can be defined through a Lagrangian analysis and optimisation is possible to facilitate energy transfer between TE and TM waves.

In the paper the propagation of short pulses in nonlinear Kerr-like medium is considered. Pulses are described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in which the generalization of nonlinear dispersion term and the self-frequency shift are taken into account. The solution of the equation in the form of quadrature is derived. Both the phase and profile of the pulse intensity are obtained. The cases of propagating bright and dark solitons in saturable Kerr-like medium are analyzed. Two models of saturation are considered. The explicit analytical expressions describing the Kerr limit are reported. The relations between the medium and propagation parameters are thoroughly discussed.

The unique features of the families of bright spinning spatiotemporal solitons (doughnuts or vortex light bullets) in dispersive quadratic media, including their stability, are presented. Both analytical results, obtained by means of a simple variational approximation, and numerical simulations are presented and compared. It was found that though the variational approximation is not very accurate, it correctly describes the qualitative features of the spinning spatiotemporal solitons. The spinning light bullets are subject to a strong azimuthal instability, which leads to the break-up of the spinning soliton into a set of fragments, each being a stable nonspinning spatiotemporal soliton.

By operating an AlGaAs waveguide array at the half band gap, we experimentally demonstrate basic features of discrete systems, which do not appear in the corresponding continuous counterpart - the slab waveguide. Under selected initial conditions, we observed nonlinearly induced locking of an initially moving soliton to the input waveguide. If the power is even higher, originally locked beams start to move again, but in a direction opposite to the initial tilt.

In the paper a special form of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation in saturable medium with nonlinear dispersion and the self-frequency shift terms is considered. The solutions describing both the intensity and phase profiles of grey solitons propagating in this medium are obtained. Four cases of medium with or without saturation and with or without higher order terms are considered. For a square-two-level model of saturation analytical explicit solutions are derived. The relations between the medium and propagation parameters of solitons are discussed.

Opis:
The magnetooptics of an asymmetric layered waveguide structure is discussed to investigate the possibility of creating new devices that combine both nonreciprocity and nonlinearity. After addressing some fundamental magnetooptic properties and the kind of materials needed, a straightforward envelope theory is given that exploits the Voigt effect instead of the more obvious Faraday effect. It is emphasised that this choice leads to desirable design features. It is proposed that the introduction of an applied magnetic field to a waveguide structure can be achieved through the use of thin current-carrying strips. It is emphasised that the strips can be arranged to any degree of complexity and that a high degree of control over spatial soliton dynamics can be achieved. Spatial soliton light beams are selected because they can be generated, within a waveguide, in a stable form. The attractive features of using the type of magnetooptic waveguide investigated here are highlighted with examples and it is concluded that the formats proposed can be used for the fully integrated isolator capacity that modern laser systems demand.

The effects on the second harmonic generation tuning curves of the beam narrowing mechanisms responsible for soliton generation were found to be dramatic. It was demonstrated experimentally that the mutual collapse of the fundamental and harmonic beams is a complex phenomenon.
