We present the observation of coherent population trapping resonances on the second resonance line of potassium: $4s^{2}S_{1//2}$ → $5 p^{2}P_{3//2}$ with wavelength of 404.4 nm. Moreover, a transfer of the coherent population trapping resonance occurs to the excited $4p^{2}P_{1//2}$ and $4p^{2}P_{3//2}$ states of the first resonance line due to cascade transitions. This transfer is evidenced by the observation of narrow resonances at the infrared $4s^{2}S_{1//2}$ → $4p^{2}P_{1//2}$ and $4s^{2}S_{1//2}$ → $4 p^{2}P_{3//2}$ transitions when alkali excitation is performed at the 404.4 nm violet line.

We study the scattering of the probe light beam by randomly distributed strongly pumped atoms in a pencil-like medium. The density of atoms is assumed to be small (of the order of one atom per light wavelength), therefore the medium formed by the atoms cannot be treated as a continuous one. Such a configuration of atoms can be practically realized in atomic traps. We show that intensity of the scattered light increases with the third power of the probe beam intensity and with the second power of the number of atoms. We also show that under certain conditions the light is scattered into few cones.

The concept of parametric spectra in electromagnetically induced transparency is clarified. In this context, the possibility for a coupling laser to reach absorption levels below the one-photon absorption is experimentally shown. In this sense, the first results of electromagnetically induced transparency for a coupling laser in a coherent-population-trapping dominated system are presented.

Magnetic field and its gradient measurements based on coherent population trapping resonances at the D$\text{}_{1}$ line of $\text{}^{87}$Rb are performed by means of coupling two ground-state Zeeman sublevels belonging to different hyperfine levels to a common excited state. Two coherent laser fields with frequency difference of 6.8 GHz are used. They are produced by direct current modulation of a diode laser. The resonance splitting and broadening caused by the applied magnetic field is measured by scanning the laser modulation frequency around the ground-state hyperfine frequency.

Opis:
We study phenomenon of electromagnetically induced absorption in the Hanle configuration by solving time-dependent optical Bloch equations for the case of the closed multilevel $F_g$=1 → $F_e$=2 transition. Our model gives optical Bloch equations as a non-homogeneous system of ordinary linear differential equations. For weak laser fields (Ω ≪ Γ i.e. Rabi frequency small compared to spontaneous emission rate), a perturbative method to solve linear differential equations can be applied. Perturbative method is realized by solving (in the time-domain) higher-order corrections to the density matrix which in the sum converge to the exact solution of optical Bloch equations. By its form, each successive correction is also system of ordinary linear differential equations which depends on the solution of previous ones. Corrections are partitioned such that odd give corrections to optical coherences, while even give corrections to populations and Zeeman coherences. We present numerical results for the behavior of density matrix elements with successive corrections, and compare them with exact solution of optical Bloch equations. Electromagnetically induced absorption is observed as a 4th and higher (even) correction to populations, when behavior in respect to both time and magnetic field is viewed. Since in our method each correction depends on the solution of previous ones, we can analyze how (through mechanism of transfer of coherences and transfer of populations between Zeeman sublevels) electromagnetically induced absorption is formed. We also discuss qualitative differences in the behavior (with respect to time) of certain density matrix elements for magnetic fields "inside" and "outside" electromagnetically induced absorption resonance.

We investigate the propagation of a pulse field in an optomechanical system. We examine the question of advance of the pulse under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency in the mechanical system contained in a high quality cavity. We show that the group delay can be controlled by the power of the coupling field. The time delay is negative which corresponds to superluminal light when there is a strong coupling between the nano-oscillator and the cavity.

We investigate the propagation of ultraslow optical pulse in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap decorated with a dimple potential. The role of dimple potential on the group velocity and time delay is studied. Since we consider the interatomic scattering interactions, nonlinear Schrödinger equation or the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is used in order to get the density profile of the atomic system. We find large group delays of order 1 ms in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap with a deep dimple potential.

Opis:
Electromagnetically induced transparency is an important tool for controlling light propagation and nonlinear wave mixing in atomic gases with potential applications ranging from quantum computing to table top tests of general relativity. Here we consider electromagnetically induced transparency in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double well potential. One well is prepared as in standard electromagnetically induced transparency with a weak probe laser and control laser in a Λp configuration while tunneling between the wells provides a coherent coupling between identical electronic states in the two wells leading to the formation of spatially delocalized inter-well dressed states. The macroscopic inter-well coherence of the Bose-Einstein condensate wave function qualitatively modifies the normal electromagnetically induced transparency linear susceptibility and leads to the formation of additional absorption resonances and larger dispersion than electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that these new resonances can be interpreted in terms of the inter-well dressed states and the formation of a novel type of dark state involving the control laser and the inter-well tunneling.

We investigated effects of spatially separated laser fields on amplitudes and widths of electromagnetically induced transparency in M-type atomic system. We have shown narrowing of the electromagnetically induced transmission resonance and therefore enhancement of medium non-linearities that can be explained by diffusion-induced Ramsey narrowing. Depending on the polarization of two laser beams, narrow probe Hanle transmission resonance changes its sign in respect of the profile obtained when the pump laser beam is off.

Using the $\text{}^2S_{1//2}$ $F_g$=2→$\text{}^2P_{3//2}$ $F_e$=3 transition in $\text{}^{87}Rb$, we analyzed the interaction between the arbitrarily polarized laser light and Zeeman sublevels in the Hanle configuration. We studied theoretically and confirmed experimentally that the effect of the laser light polarization on the electromagnetically induced absorption strongly depends on the laser light power. For the same atomic transition, and for single laser light power (3 mW), it was recently shown that electromagnetically induced absorption line widths increase with polarization ellipticity and that electromagnetically induced absorption amplitude has maximum for certain laser light polarization different than linear. Here, we present results for amplitudes and widths of electromagnetically induced absorption for different laser light polarizations and for the laser light power≤ 200μW. It is verified that for small laser light power maximal electromagnetically induced absorption amplitude is for the linear polarization, whereas for larger power maximum of the electromagnetically induced absorption is at higher polarization ellipticity.

We analyse the three-colour electromagnetically induced transparency for the D$\text{}_{1}$ transition in cold $\text{}^{87}$Rb atoms. We report an enhancement of the electromagnetically induced emission of a drive field as an exclusive enhancement of the third- and fourth-rank components of the density matrix. Moreover, the gain experienced by the drive field is attributed to the influence of the quantum switching effect on the increased absorption of the probe field. The electromagnetically induced emission effect is employed to generate slow light Gaussian-wave trains with shape preserving. These soliton trains were not only generated in the drive channel as has been designated but also in the switch channel which reveals multiple-light storage phenomenon.

Experiments on hot rubidium vapor as an atomic medium with electromagnetically induced transparency for radiation of 795 nm wavelength (D1 absorption line of rubidium) are reported. Propagation of light pulses with velocity reduced to 11.5 km/s has been observed with a significant modification of the shape of square input pulses to adapt to the spectral window of induced transparency. So-called light storage, i.e. suspension of the propagation of light pulses in the medium by temporary turn-off of the electromagnetically induced transparency state was also demonstrated. "Storage" periods of several microseconds, limited by relatively fast relaxation of atomic spin polarization in the volume of interaction of atoms with radiation, were obtained.
