Opis:
The article describes the operation's rule of the fiber optic sensor in the modalmetric configuration. This type of sensor is described by comparatively simple construction, while retaining other features of fiber-optic sensors such as high sensitivity. This gives a very high potential application. In the paper possible application of the modalmetric sensor to protection of works of art and museum collections is presented. The advantage of its use is the ability to tie the fiber in structure of material. Moreover, the advantage of such type a sensor compared to existing solutions of security sensors is the reaction for vibration and touch. The paper presents the concept and results of the system optimization.

In the paper we present the results of investigating the effective group birefringence of photonic crystal fiber, partially infiltrated with 6CHBT liquid crystal mixture, which is a chemical abbreviation for 4-(trans-4-n-hexylcyclohexyl)isothiocyanatobenzene. We also introduce a novel method of group birefringence measurement based on phenomenon of depolarization of partially coherent light in birefringent media. We use Mueller-Stokes matrix formalism extended by additional depolarization matrix, which gives us possibility to calculate degree of polarization fluctuations of the light propagating in the liquid-crystal infiltrated microstructured optical fibres. We conducted the research for green and red semiconductor laser diodes. The results may contribute in construction of tunable photonic liquid crystal fibers depolarizer. Additionally, we have controlled birefringence of the photonic liquid crystal fibers by external electric field. These research may lead to designing a new type of fiber optic depolarizer based on photonic liquid crystal fibers.

This article studies the propagation of light in asymmetric Cantor set fractal multi-layered structures. We show that well designed Cantor set structures can lead to broadband high reflectivity over a large wavelength range but, by adding asymmetries to the Cantor set, it is possible to control the reflectivity from 100% to nearly 0%.

Opis:
Microbolometers are the most widely used detectors in long-wave infrared uncooled thermal imagers. An optical cavity is required within a microbolometer structure to increase its optical absorption. In this work we present a detailed study on the design and optimization of a microbolometer optical cavity using Essential-Macleod package. In the simulations, the cavity is considered as thin film multi-layers that form cascaded Fabry-Perot optical cavities. In the design phase, the structures of layers are selected, which includes selection of materials and initial thickness. The absorbing layers are chosen to be made of vanadium-pentoxide (V₂O₅) and titanium (Ti). In the optimization phase, the designed layer thicknesses are varied to maximize optical absorption within the absorbing layers. The simulations show that Ti layer absorption dominates over the V₂O₅ layer. Also, the optimization proves that the thickness of cavity's air-gap is not equal simply to quarter-wavelength, because of the presence of a complex cascaded Fabry-Perot structure. The optimized air-gap thickness is found to be ≈ 3.5 μm at wavelength of 10.6 μm.

We studied focusing properties of 2D square photonic crystal with concavo-concavo boundaries. The photonic crystal is built by air holes in a uniform dielectric. The incident plane wave propagates through a section of the photonic crystal and efficient focusing is observed by finite difference time domain simulations. To analyze the properties of photonic crystal we calculated the photonic band structure and equal frequency contours for TE modes. In our simulation we consider influence of geometry of the concave structures on the focusing properties.

Simulation of light beam propagation in optical fiber with a high step index requires the use of complicated methods. One of the simplest and accurate method is presented in this paper. The possibility of use of beam propagation method with exact boundary conditions in light beam propagation in optical fibers is shown in this work. The comparison of this method with analytical solutions for planar waveguide and optical fiber confirms usefulness of it.

This paper presents the application and comparison of a macrobend seismic optical fiber accelerometer and ferrule-top cantilever fiber sensor (made by Optics11 - Amsterdam, Netherlands) both for long distance vibration monitoring. The sensors utilize typical telecommunication optical transmission systems with specially prepared sensing head. Both optical fiber sensors measure force and acceleration similar to the piezoelectric accelerometers. One of the advantages of these devices is insensitivity to electromagnetic interference because of lack of electrically driven elements in sensing head area. Experiments with wide ranges of frequencies and vibration amplitudes were performed. Main parameters and measurement capabilities of both sensor types were compared. Experimental results show usage possibility of both sensor types in industry and other explosion risk environments for vibration measurement and online monitoring.

In the paper we present results of the sensor analysis with different kinds of birefringent optical fibers leading to an optimal setup for dynamic strain monitoring in composite materials. Experiments on hot rubidium vapor as an atomic medium with electromagnetically induced transparency for radiation of 795 nm wavelength (D1 absorption line of rubidium) are reported. Propagation of light pulses with velocity reduced to 11.5 km/s has been observed with a significant modification of the shape of square input pulses to adapt to the spectral window of induced transparency. So-called light storage, i.e. suspension of the propagation of light pulses in the medium by temporary turn-off of the electromagnetically induced transparency state was also demonstrated. "Storage" periods of several microseconds, limited by relatively fast relaxation of atomic spin polarization in the volume of interaction of atoms with radiation, were obtained.

The paper reports on the growth conditions of Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ single crystals in both pure and Yb, Co, Mn doped systems. The crystals were grown by the Czochralski method using an intentional concentration of the above-mentioned ions at a level of 0.5 mol.%. The pure and Mn-doped crystals were found to be highly transparent and clear. The crystals doped with Yb$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ had a lot of precipitations making them opaque. The Co-doped crystals were purple-blue in colour and highly transparent. The growth of Yb and Co doped Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ crystals was reported for the first time in this paper. Absorption was measured in the range of 200 to 3200 nm, moreover analysis of changes in the absorption spectrum ofγ-irradiated pure and doped Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ crystals was performed. Some thermoluminescence properties were measured, e.g. energies and lifetimes of the traps of different charge carriers occurring in the crystals at low temperatures.

We consider metamaterial slabs composed of perfectly conducting split-ring resonators. Assuming bianisotropic constitutive relations, we describe an S-parameter retrieval method that allows us to obtain the full material parameter tensors from numerically calculated S parameters. The retrieval has been done for various angles of incidence, ranging from 0° to 75°. It has been found that the parameters depend on the angle of incidence, but that this dependence is relatively small.
