Opis:
We describe the design of the Canadian Macromolecular Crystallography Facility 08ID-1 protein crystallography beamline that is being built at the Canadian Light Source. An in-vacuum small gap undulator will illuminate the beamline providing high X-ray brilliance and beam properties available at the Canadian Light Source that will allow studying small crystals (>20μm) and crystals with large cell dimensions (<1000Å). The planned automation of the beamline will allow for its remote usage.

Opis:
The King's College London (KCL) first X-ray microprobe (MKI) and the third generation microfocus X-ray sources (MKIII) are intended to be used for various applications including the study of physical and biological interactions at the atomic and molecular scales. The microfocus ultra-soft X-ray sources (MKI and MKIII) with interchangeable targets will provide a superior spatial resolution (a focal spot a few hundreds of nanometres in diameter can be achieved) and the control of the dose delivered to irradiated cells. This will require characterization of the spectra and intensities of the source, measurements of the focus intensities and spot sizes of suitable X-ray optics such as zone plates, grazing incidence microstructured optical arrays and multilayer mirrors.

Opis:
Recent experiments at Sandia National Laboratories have demonstrated an electron beam diode X-ray source capable of producing >350 rad at one meter with 1.7 mm FWHM X-ray source distribution, with a 50 ns pulse-width and X-ray photon endpoint energy spectrum in the 6-7 MeV range. The diode operates at current densities of ≈1 MA/$cm^{2}$. The intense electron beam rapidly ( ≈ 5 ns) heats the X-ray conversion anode/target, liberating material in the form of low density ion emission early in the pulse and high density plasma later. This environment gives rise to beam/plasma collective effects which dominate the diode and beam characteristics, affecting the radiation properties (dose and spot-size). A review of the diode operation, the measured source characteristics and the simulation methods and diagnostics used to guide its optimization is given.

Opis:
The experimental application of a novel technique utilizing a high resolution 2D pixel detector (PILATUS) in scanning transmission X-ray microscopy is presented. Measurements were performed at beamline P11 at the PETRA III synchrotron light source. Results are compared to the approach based on a segmented-type detector. A full simulation of the experimental line has been implemented in C++ programming language. Concepts of ptychography and its application in X-ray microscopy are also briefly discussed.

Opis:
Various imaging methods and techniques capable of reaching a nanometer spatial resolution are currently under development. One of them is an extreme ultraviolet microscopy, based on the Fresnel zone plates. In this paper a compact, high-repetition, laser-plasma EUV source, with a gas puff target, capable of emitting quasi-monochromatic radiation at 13.8 nm wavelength was used in the first demonstration of a desk-top EUV transmission microscopy with a spatial (half-pitch) resolution of 50 nm. EUV microscopy images of objects with various thicknesses and the spatial resolution measurements using the knife-edge test are presented.

Opis:
A compact soft X-ray microscope based on a nitrogen double-stream gas puff target soft X-ray source, operating at He-like nitrogen spectral line at the wavelength of λ =2.88 nm is presented. The desk-top size microscope was successfully demonstrated in transmission mode using the Fresnel zone-plate objective and it is suitable for soft X-ray source microscopy in the "water window" spectral range (λ = 2.3÷ 4.4 nm). Details about the soft X-ray source source, the microscope and an example of application in the biomedical field are shown and discussed.
