Opis:
The fabrication of quantum cascade lasers emitting at 9 μm is reported. The devices operated in pulsed mode at up to 260 K. The peak powers recorded at 77 K were over 1 W and the slope efficiency η ≈ 0.5-0.6 W/A per uncoated facet. This has been achieved by the use of GaAs/$Al_{0.45}Ga_{0.55}As$ heterostructure, with the "anticrossed-diagonal" design. Double plasmon planar confinement with Al-free waveguide has been used to minimize absorption losses. The double trench lasers were fabricated using standard processing technology, i.e., wet etching and $Si_{3}N_{4}$ for electrical insulation. The quantum cascade laser structures have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy, with Riber Compact 21 T reactor. The stringent requirements - placed particularly on the epitaxial technology - and the influence of technological conditions on the device structure properties were presented and discussed in depth.

Opis:
Dielectric relaxation study of nematogenic 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyls (nCB, n = 5, 6), 4-(trans-4'-n-alkylcyclohexyl)isothiocyanatobenzenes (nCHBT, n = 6, 8), 4-cyanophenyl-4'-n-alkylbenzoates (nCPB, n = 6, 8), 4-cyano-3-fluorophenyl-4'-n-octyloxybenzoate (8OCFPB), and 4-cyanophenyl-4'-n-octyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoate (8OCPFB) was performed in the frequency range from 50 kHz to 100 MHz in the nematic and isotropic phases. The static permittivity and the relaxation process related to the rotation of molecules around their short axis was analyzed. For some of these liquid crystals anomalous temperature dependence of static permittivity in the pretransitional region of the isotropic phase was observed. Based on the Meier-Saupe-Martin model of molecular diffusion in nematics, the orientational order parameter 〈$P_2$〉 was determined from dielectric relaxation times and retardation factor. The values of 〈$P_2$〉 calculated from the dielectric relaxation data were compared with the results obtained from measurements of polarized electronic absorption. Correlations between the magnitude of the dielectric pretransitional effect and the orientational order in the nematic phase were discussed.

Opis:
We report results of EPR measurements of activated carbon fibers. Experiments made for pristine activated carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers with adsorbed molecules (CCl$\text{}_{4}$, C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{5}$NO$\text{}_{2}$, and H$\text{}_{2}$O) confirmed the localized character of paramagnetic centers observed in the system. Pristine activated carbon fibers are characterized by single Lorentzian line. Broader component of EPR signal appears when guest molecules are adsorbed in nanopores. The strongest localization is observed for water-filled activated carbon fibers nanopores (with hydrophobic pore walls) where changes in distance between nanographite particles were monitored by the g-shift to higher values. This process is related to stronger spin-orbit interaction of electrons trapped at nanographite particles compressed by guest molecules.
