    Opis:
    The aim of the article is to preliminarily analyse the Polish anthropological terminology included in the most important 19th-century Kraków Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology] by S. Janikowski, J. Oettinger and A. Kremer, which was created during the period when anthropology was emerging as a new science. Anthropological terms had appeared in Kraków’s medical dictionaries before (over 40%), but it was in S 1881 that they were first distinguished from medical terminology and marked with the qualifier antr. The anthropological terminology for S 1881 was prepared by prominent anthropologists who were also physicians: I. Kopernicki and J. Majer. Out of 195 Polish terms, over 70% apply to craniology and craniometry, reflecting the main direction of the development in Polish anthropology. The Polish terms are definitely indigenous. More than 80% are one- (55.4%) and two-element terms (26.2%). Synonymy is present in the analysed terminology (40.4%), although there is a visible tendency to limit the number of Polish terms in synonymic series to two (73.7%).

    The ordering of the Polish medical terminology in the 19th century resulted in the release of the Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology (Polish: Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej) in 1881. The publication collected, among other things, synonymic series of Polish medical terms following the rule that the best term was listed as the first one, which in this paper, is referred to as the main synonym. The aim of the article is to present the frequency of instances when the main synonym is a borrowing. The analysis of 940 synonymic series concerning the names of diseases reveals that borrowings are rare in the analysed material (only 57 out of the 2,469 terms in the synonymic series). A borrowing (mainly from Greek and Latin) constitutes the main synonym only 15 times. The authors of the Dictionary preferred native terms despite the fact that foreign ones are usually more "economical" (e.g. with regard to their structure).

    A study titled Rys grammatyki języka polskiego (Outline of the Polish grammar) was published in 1857. Antoni Morzycki, the author of the grammar book, was not a philologist by education, he wrote his study out of a sense of civic duty. He founded his concept on the dogma of the speech originating from the Word, as John the Evangelist wrote: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The man received the Word as a gi from God. The author divides grammar into three sections: phonetics and phonology, the science of the word and clause, and spelling. He adopted parallelism of parts of speech and clause as one of the rules organising the grammatical description. The book evoked an intense reaction of his contemporaries.

    The author of the grammar book, Henryk Suchecki (1811–1872), was a teacher of Polish and a professor at Charles University in Prague and Jagiellonian University. The textbook entitled Nauka języka polskiego dla uczącej się młodzi (Polish for young learners), published in 1849, was dedicated to primary school pupils. The chapters of the book, according to the author, correspond to divisions of grammar: O pisowni (On spelling) (= orthography), Rzecz o głoskach (On sounds) (= phonetics), Rzecz o zgłoskach (On syllables) (= phonetics, word-formation), Rzecz o słowach (On words) (= inflection and word-formation), and Rzecz o zdaniach (On sentences) (= syntax). Suchecki is one of few authors of grammar books to invoke the views of German authors. The evaluation of the work by researchers of those and later times is ambivalent.

    This article presents an analysis of the names of diseases and their symptoms in Słownik polsko-łacińsko-łotewski (The Polish-Latin-Latvian dictionary) by Jan Kurmin (ed. Vilnius, 1858). The number of excerpted lexical items (377) is presented in 11 semantic fields (from the most expanded to the smallest one): diseases of the motor system, skin diseases, respiratory system diseases, symptoms of multiple diseases, internal diseases, infectious diseases, diseases of the sensory organs, wounds and cuts, digestive system diseases, mental diseases, cardiovascular diseases. The analysis shows that despite the high ability to observe symptoms, the knowledge of treatments remained limited, which is why the dictionary presents mostly diseases that can be easily observed with the unaided eye. The non-professional character of the dictionary is also evidenced by the use of synonymous sequences, vocabulary with indistinct meaning, and descriptive names of diseases.

    Opis:
    This paper characterises 18 synonyms of padaczka (epilepsy) certifi ed in 19thcentury texts. The source basis was the medical dictionaries of those days, titles of articles in medical press, selected medical guides and dictionaries including the Polish language (monolingual and multilingual; general and dialectal ones). This served as the basis for establishing the reach of the characterised synonyms in the 19th c., which was the time of intensive works on organising the Polish medical terminology. The analysis permitted the conclusion that padaczka and epilepsya were the two terms that were used most frequently and broadly (at all terminological levels of the language of the discussed century) at that time.

    An examination of the lexical material contained in Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [Polish Medical Terminology Dictionary] of 1881 and Słownik lekarski polski [Polish Medical Dictionary] of 1905 shows that the synonymy withdrawal rate in this period was only 20%. The purpose of the article is to provide a detailed description of this process, including the process of an apparent withdrawal of synonymy in the lexicon of 1905 (e.g. some foreign language entries have not been recorded there at all; sometimes a synonymic string was removed while leaving a new term next to the foreign language entry, "new" meaning absent in the dictionary of 1881).
    Po przebadaniu materiału leksykalnego ze Słownika terminologii lekarskiej polskiej z 1881 oraz ze Słownika lekarskiego polskiego z 1905 roku okazuje się, że w tym okresie synonimia wycofała się w zaledwie 20%. Przedmiotem artykułu jest szczegółowe omówienie tego zjawiska, w tym również zjawiska pozornego usuwania synonimii w leksykonie z 1905 roku (np. niektóre hasła obcojęzyczne nie zostały tam w ogóle odnotowane; czasem zlikwidowano szereg synonimiczny i jednocześnie pozostawiono przy obcojęzycznym haśle nowy termin polski; nowy, tzn. nieobecny w słowniku z 1881).

    The article describes the structure of 940 medical terms (names of diseases) fromthe “Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology” (Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej)of 1881, that have been recognised as the most accurate, i.e. primary synonyms.From their analysis in the context of synonymic chains in which they occur, it was concludedthat the structure of a term recognised as ideal is of no great significance (in the case of 80% of terms) for the establishment of the term as the primary synonym. This isone of the reasons for which primary synonyms often have a structure identical to otherterms in its synonymic chain.

    The aim of the article is to compare materials from two 19th-century dictionaries that comprise Polish veterinary terminology: Słowniczek wyrazów weterynarskich of 1876 and Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej of 1881. In the dictionary of 1881 there are 284 entries out of 297 contained in the lexicon of 1876. Of these, only 258 entries are full entries. The comparison of their editing in both dictionaries shows that in the lexicon of 1881, 3 foreign headwords had fewer Polish equivalents, 21 had more Polishterms, and 228 had the same number of Polish equivalents. The quantitative changes in the last two groups were accompanied by qualitative changes, involving the replacement of Polish terms. The analysis of Polish veterinary terminology has also shown its strong connections with Polish medical terminology of the time.
