Opis:
The article scrutinizes the sources and manifestations of risk that was involved in the East African caravan trade in the 19th century (i.e. the pre-colonial, as well as the early colonial period). Also, the text is devoted to the means of trust building (such as cognatic ties, blood brotherhood) that were used to minimize uncertainty that was inherent in the business activities in multiethnic and stateless societies. The stress is put on the clash of different legal traditions, culturally motivated patterns of economic behaviour and economic ethics. In the conclusion, author attempts to interpret the relevant issues in the light of the generally known features of the historical processes: political centralisation of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, the penetration of the interior by Muslims, and destabilisation of the interior.

Opis:
Artykuł dotyczy genezy powstania w 1862 r. Komitetu Zachodniego odpowiedzialnego za opracowanie programu depolonizacji zachodnich guberni Cesarstwa Rosyjskiego. Był on piątym w dziejach carskiej Rosji specjalnym komitetem o szerokich kompetencjach w zakresie zarządzania rubieżami Cesarstwa.
The sources of the so-called second Western Committee should be sought in the reaction of the Russian authorities to the growing and unprecedented wave of social and political unrest in the early 1860s and national aspirations expressed by the Polish society. One of them was the desire to incorporate the Western Guberniyas into the Kingdom of Poland. For the first time this demand was officially put forward by the nobility of the Rahachow District (Mogilev Guberniya) in October 1861. The reaction of the Russian authorities to this event was the cancellation of the nobility elections in the Mogilev Guberniya and the arrest of the marshal of the Rahachow District Jan Bohusz.Much greater political repercussions were brought by the congress of the nobility at Kamianets-Podilskyi (in September 1862). The gathered nobility of the Podolia Guberniya prepared an address to Tsar Alexander II, demanding the administrative integration of the Stolen Lands with the Kingdom of Poland as a condition and “the basis for the further development of both the Polish and Ukrainian people”. These demands of the Podolia nobility were received in St Petersburg as a threat to the state and an expression of Polish separatism which should be fought at all costs. Almost immediately a decision was made to set up a Western Committee to prepare decisions regarding the solution of the so-called Polish case, consisting primarily in the definitive ousting of Polish influence from the Western Guberniyas of the Russian Empire.
Истоков образования т.н.

Opis:
Zagadnienie omówione zostało z wieloma odniesieniami do Ziem Zabranych, z wykorzystaniem dokumentacji urzędowej centralnych władz Królestwa Polskiego przechowywanej w rosyjskich archiwach.
The article examines the problem of the abolition of martial law in the Kingdom of Poland. Unlike the one-time and unambiguous-sounding act announcing the introduction of martial law, its cancellation and annulment were not officially announced. It took place in stages under several detailed decrees and legal regulations issued after 1863, which were treated as a withdrawal from the system of military-police rule. The issue is discussed with many references to the so-called „Taken Lands” (the Russian partition), using official documentation of the central authorities of the Kingdom of Poland stored in Russian archives.

In the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Polish scientific and professional communities took action to tighten contacts between compatriots living in the area of the three partitioning powers, and the emigration. This was a response to the unsuccessful attempts at regaining independence by using weapons. Engaging in scientific activity and building relations were supposed to replace the armed struggle. It meant that connections were established between Polish scientific societies, and first of all, conventions were organised. The initiatives taken on this forum served the development of Polish science and helped Poles to act collectively, which gradually assumed an organised form embracing the three partitions. Polish scholars also aspired to establish a common representation on the international forum. Such initiatives taken by scientific and professionalcommunities largely contributed to the restoration of independent Poland.

Faustyn Ciecierski, a Vilnius-based Dominican brother, left an interesting manuscript heritage. It includes Pamiętnik (The diary) from his exile to Siberia in the 1790s, Dziennik wizytatora (The journal of a visitor) written in the years 1821–1832 and supplements to the chronicle of the Lithuanian Dominican brothers. The preserved texts constitute a rich source material for historians – especially the researchers into the history of Dominicans – but also to geographers, travelers, and ethnographers as well as linguists and the literati. The heritage is also an interesting testimony of how the text and books functioned in the Dominican monasteries in Lithuania and Belarus. It allows for establishing new facts related to the artistic output; research, collector and bibliophile interests of the monastery members, their achievements in the fields of education, functioning of the library and archival collections in the Dominican monasteries of the Lithuanian province at the end of the 18th and the first three decades of the 19th century.

Opis:
Before the Partitions, Poland, beside Russia, was the largest, territorially compact European state. As a result of the Partitions of Poland, which were carried out in 1772, 1793 and 1795, Polish territory was divided and annexed by the three partitioning powers: Russia, Germany and Prussia. In an attempt to resist aggressive Germanization by the invader, Poles employed, among others, the methods of “organic work” and “work at the grass roots” (a programme, launched by the Polish positivists, of economic and cultural development through spreading literacy and popularizing science among the masses). It was on Polish territories under Prussian occupation that the theoretical and practical foundations of farm accounting were developed (Bernacki 2007b, p. 116-117). The main objectives of this paper are: to place the work and theory of Juliusz Au within the social and political context of the Prussian partition; to present a theory of agricultural accounting developed by J. Au; to evaluate J. Au’s theory from present-day perspective. J. Au is the author of a comprehensive, universal theory of accounting encompassing its three cognitive levels (aspects): (1) general level, covering the concept, objectives and method of accounting; (2) procedural level, comprising principles of assets measurement, choice of accounting period and production cost calculation; (3) supporting level, comprising organization of accounting, rules for statistical data collection and audit procedures.

A Latin inscription in St. Mary's church in Katowice commemorates its first parson, Father Wiktor Schmidt (1841-1917). Father Schmidt did much to promote the Catholic faith in Upper Silesia. Simultaneously, as a politician, he actively opposed Polish national aspirations. Latin was probably chosen as the language of the inscription because it seemed acceptable for both Polish and German members of the congregation.

Former guidebooks are an important category of historical source that allows for the reconstruction of many aspects of the history of tourism. The dynamic development of guidebook literature began in the 19th century when a modern type with descriptions according to routes and containing much practical information was developed. The guidebooks also presented a lot of other information of a general nature, such as geography, ethnology, natural science, as well as descriptions of monuments and works of art. The importance of Polish guidebooks for writing about art is very high yet underestimated. The aim of this paper is to define the role that these publications played in the field of artistic historiography, and to indicate the relationships between the guidebooks and the development of academic research on art. These problems are undoubtedly an interesting area of interdisciplinary relation between the historical development of tourism and academia, with a particular focus on art history in this case.

The reader is presented with an article based on the chronicle of the parish in Odrowąż, which originated in 1819 and describes its history till the end of the 19th century. The author of the text was Jan Kanty Miś - the first official rector of this parish. He shortly described its history as well as that of the church. He also listed the furnishings of the temple and characterized its mural paintings. The text, written in Latin, also contains biographies of the first two rectors of the parish. At the turn of the nineteenth century many churches affiliated to existing parishes in the southern part of Poland became independent. The first community to have undergone this process was that of Chochołów and later on similar efforts were made by inhabitants of Pieniążkowice. In 1818 the construction of the church started. According to regulations, each new parish should consist of at least one thousand worshippers. At the same time villagers from Odrowąż, which was only 1.5 km away from Pianiążkowice, also commenced the construction of their own temple. In 1819 the decision was made by the authorities to found the new parish in Odrowąż with the villages of Dział, Pieniążkowice and Załuczne becoming its part. In the next years the two constructions were carried on simulataneously, namely the legal one in Odrowąż and the illegal one in Pieniążkowice. The argument between the two communities continued despite intervention of state authorities, the owners of the villages as well as the rector.

The 1860s were marked by an exceptional affection and friendship in the bilateral relations between the United States, a young American republic, and the long‑established tsarist Russia. This phenomenon, which had never occurred with such intensity before or since, inspired Russian and American researchers and politicians to organize The Tsar and the President: Alexander II and Abraham Lincoln, Liberator and Emancipator exhibition which was displayed, inter alia, in Moscow in 2011. The following article analyses (on the basis of numerous source materials from the period) the reasons of this mutual amity and trust, as well as their military and economic cooperation–both internal (the Civil War in the U.S., the January Uprising in the Russian Empire), and external (the rivalry with Great Britain and France, and political calculations in the search for suitable alliances)–in the period of world power rivalry for global spheres of influence.

Providing valuable research on social history is, nowadays, impossible without the use of complex digital tools capable of providing, through appropriate interrogation, comprehensive answers to the researchers' increasingly varied research questions. The development of Historical Population Database (HPDT) has brought us closer to other research problems that require the input of digital tools in order to be investigated as widely as possible. One of these is the process of medicalization of Transylvania, a historical topic about which there are relatively few and rather narrow approaches. On the basis of administrative and sanitary directories, various other sources referring to the allocation of doctors' posts in the communes and the filling of these posts, medical reports, press, publications, statistics, parish registers and other sources related to the medical situation, we have built the Transylvania Health Database (THD), a research tool that is expected to be released for public use by the end of 2022. THD is a method-oriented database, built in MySQL, whose presentation can be used for the implementation of similar projects in the Eastern European area, which is still underdeveloped in terms of digital tools useful to researchers.
