16th century lexis
Opis:
Lexemes Evangelic and Protestant appeared in the Polish language in the middle of the 16th century. The name Evangelic was first used by Stanislaw Orzechowski in the work Rozmowa około egzekucyjej of 1563. The name Protestant was created in connection with the protest of Martin Luther’s followers at the Diet of Speyer and its only 16th century attestation comes from Marcin Kromer’s work Mnicha z dworzaninem rozmowa trzecia of 1553. This lexeme also functioned in the meaning not related to religious issues but resulting from the Latin basis. A general name applied in the 16th c. in relation to the Reformation’s followers was the lexeme Evangelic used, among others, by Bielski, Wujek or Skarga. At that time, apart from Evangelic, names reflecting internal diversity of the movement were in use such as, among others, luteran, luteryjan, luter, kalwinista, kalwinita, kalwin or auszpurczanin as well as general names such as konfessyjonista. In subsequent centuries the lexeme Protestant popularized in the first non-religious meaning as a synonym of an opponent. Dictionary resource material from the 17th and 18th centuries concerning the above mentioned lexemes does not allow to claim whether they became synonyms already in the Middle Polish period. The process of semantic identification of the lexemes finished in the Modern Polish period, which is confirmed by both the Polish language dictionaries and the most recent Polish language included in the National Corpus of Polish. It appears that such identification is a result of expiration of the first sub-meaning of the lexeme Protestant as well as an effect of the manner of defining this lexeme involving separation of a religious meaning from specified historical events. When the lexemes appeared in the 16th century, the lexeme Evangelic prevailed whereas currently the lexeme Protestant is more popular.

The paper thus aims to answer the question whether designations for religious dissenters used by Jakub Wujek reflect the actual multiplicity of reformed confessions existing at the time. The material has been excerpted from the first edition of Iudicium available from the Lower Silesian Digital Library. Jakub Wujek’s Iudicium employs 16 various appellations of followers associated with the Reformation movement. Taking into account lexical doublets, such as luteran and luteryjan, witemberczanin and witemberczyk, zwinglijan and zwinglijanin as well as more comprehensive terms such as heretyk, kacerz, nowowiernik, odszczepieniec and sektarz, the catalogue of names increases to 25 items.

The article discusses ten 16th-century designations of the beneficiaries of the Catholic Church, that is the persons endowed with offices, which were connected with specific profits. These names have been excerpted from the published volumes of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (“The Dictionary of the 16th-Century Polish”). The article presents their origin and subsequent history. It is worth noting that the majority of the names of church beneficiaries that were confirmed in the 16th-century Polish language appeared just in that century. Despite the disappearance of offices and posts designated by them, the greater part of those lexemes have survived until today, if not in general Polish, than in its ecclesiastical variety as obsolete or historical lexemes.

The article aims to show Poznań bourgeois inventories as a source for studying lexis related to beer production. The excerpted vocabulary has been classified into lexical-semantic fields by means of textual and lexical meanings derived from the Dictionary of Polish Language of the 16th century. The possibility of supplementing the dictionary resources by lexical material obtained from the inventories has also been indicated – these are new meanings and numerous new attestations, especially relevant for lexemes recorded in the dictionary several times. The analysis was supplemented by a commentary on the origin of the lexica.

The article discusses 21 designations for Christian clergymen from Churches other than Catholic from the 16th century. They are general names of Orthodox and Protestant clergymen as well as the names of high-ranking priests and dignitaries of those Churches. The names mentioned have been excerpted from the published volumes of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (“Dictionary of the 16thcentury Polish Language”). The article presents their origin and a consecutive history. What must be noted is quite big variety of the names of clergypersons of the denominations other than Catholic in the Polish language of the 16th century. Additionally, we can notice stability of those basic, most common designations. They are generally continued in contemporary Polish, not only in its specialist ecclesiastical variety.

Opis:
The author summarises the research conducted so far on the confessional differentiation of Polish religious lexis in the 16th century, which was initiated in the 1960s by Konrad Górski, a literary historian. In his publication Zagadnienia słownictwa reformacji polskiej (The Issue of the Polish Reformation Vocabulary), the scholar argued that Protestants used different words than Catholics to designate important religious concepts, and that lexis was an important factor to identify the denomination. This thesis had a significant impact on the assumptions and research objectives formulated by subsequent scholars who addressed the relationship between denomination and vocabulary. In the section of the article containing research postulates, attention is drawn to thenecessity of verifying Górski’s position, which was already initiated to a limited extent, mainly in the works by Tomasz Lisowski, who pointed out other than confessional determinants of lexical choices in the 16th-century translations of the Bible. It is considerednecessary in the postulated research to broaden the resource base, to take into account the pragmatic diversity of the source texts (sender-receiver relations, intentions), to introduce numerical data objectifying the conclusions, as well as a comparative reference to the status in other languages.

Opis:
The article focuses on lexical peculiarities of David’Psalter by Mikołaj Rej, that is on these lexical forms which are not present in the 16th-century lexicographic sources or which are present in the dictionaries only on the basis of Rej’s works. Such peculiar lexemes frequently appear in Rej’s paraphrase, usually as synonymic equivalents, or even as word-formation doublets, of lexemes whose position in Polish literature is stable. Various factors decided about whether to include neologisms in Rej’s paraphrase, such as: the desire to strive for lexical precision and word-formation regularity, the possibilities of creating a lexeme and the aspect of versification and rhythm, which aimed at putting together forms created with the help of the same suffix. What helped to choose and accept some neologisms was also the desire to divide these lexemes which occurred next to each other in parallel verses.

Opis:
In a verse of Act 23,23 in Biblia gdańska (1632) translated by Daniel Mikołajewski, an equivalent of Greek lexeme δεξιόλαβος ‘probably a spearman or slinger’, the noun drabant is used, which is unique, compared to its counterpart – oszczepnik – in Biblia translated by JakubWujek (1599). It may have been borrowed from the Czech language in the second half of the 16th century. In the Polish language of the time it was not a very widespread lexeme, maybe of erudite nature. It appeared in the text of Biblia gdańska taken from the Czech Biblia kralicka. Among Protestants at that time, as a military term, it could have evoked associations with the religious Hussite Wars. The lexeme drabant survived in the biblical text of the Evangelist circles until the second half of the twentieth century. Given the fact that in that century it was already an archaic word, it was not used in new testament translations which followed the translational tradition of Biblia gdańska. And probably it became fixed in the consciousness of the faithful of Evangelist churches as a memorable reminder of the past. For centuries that lexeme, along with other lexemes characteristic of Biblia gdańska caused lexical distinctiveness of that Evangelist translation compared to the Catholic translation by Jakub Wujek.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a quantitative analysis of the vocabulary attested in the Polish translation of the work of Pietro de‘ Crescenzi (Piotr Krescentyn) Księgi o gospodarstwie (original title: Opus ruralium commodorum) against the statystical characteristics of the translations of the New Testament from the latter half of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, and the text of Wizerunek własny żywota człowieka poczciwego (The Life of the Honest Man) by Mikołaj Rej. The following statystical parameters were studied: the number of words, the number of entries, K quantity factor, arithmetic mean of the frequency of entries, dispersion of entries, vocabulary originality parameter I, distribution of the autosemantic parts of speech (lexical category) and the distribution of individual autosemantic parts of speech (lexical categories). The analysis shows that, with regard to the statistical approach, the vocabulary of Księgi... is rather closer to Wizerunek than to the translations of the New Testament – in comparison to the latter, Księgi... is characterized by a far more ample vocabulary, greater number of entries and autosemantic words, greater number of attested nouns, adverbs in particular (the latter group is characterized by a higher percentage of entries with high frequency). Księgi..., as compared to the translations of the New Testament, also abounds with participles whose repertory is not only more numerous with regard to words but also to entries. The analysis confims the observation made by Władysław Kuraszkiewicz with reference to the dependence between the quantity of vocabulary and the content of texts – the closer it is to real life and refers to its diverse aspects, the richer vocabulary is used for its rendering.
