Opis:
The author in this short essay introduces to the academic and scientific community an unpublished poem of Peter Arivabene, a learned poet who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century. The codex, which contains the poem is kept in the Library of Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza, where Prof. Orazio Antonio Bologna saw it for the first time on October 12th, 2012. Becoming acquainted with the contents of the codex and believing to give a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the poet, he transcribed, translated and published the contents of the codex. In this study, for the first time, Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene is mentioned as a poet, because Humanism and Renaissance’s scholars already knew him but only as the secretary of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga and as the abbreviator and secretary in the Vatican curia from 1482, where he remained until 1491 under the popes’ service. The long poem, begun around 1459 when the poet was about 20 years old, was completed after the diet of Mantua, which ended on January 19th, 1460. The fine poem reveals a deep and refined culture even though there are uncertainties and redundancies peculiar to youth.

The subject of research are selected metadata that should characterize the texts collected in the corpus of the oldest attestations of the Polish language. The author of the article compares and analyses the factors affecting the development of the basic data structure used in synchronic and diachronic corpora (author, title, date of the text, text channel, text classification, source of citation). Without those factors taken into account the disambiguation of the object in the database becomes impossible, and the use of grammatical information is unreliable and impractical. The result of the presented analysis is a proposal to extend the level of description for individual markers.

Opis:
The “town hall’s” expenses were an almost standard item in the late medieval accounts of towns influenced by German culture. This item could usually be associated with the general costs for maintaining the institutions, related to the council’s exercising power in the town, and included also direct expenditure on the town hall building and on the activities conducted therein. Current costs related to the maintenance of the building comprised mainly heating, repairs and the construction of heating devices, as well as various minor repairs. Less important costs were related to supplementing the equipment in the rooms, mainly with items related to official activities, archiving, and entertainment functions (vessels used for the banquets). Most of the costs incurred in respect of the work of officials were related to providing the chancellery with paper. Usually, a junior official, called a servant or porter, was responsible for the office building; however, this was only a fraction of his responsibilities. Dividing the office activities among various rooms, sometimes separate buildings, makes defining the scope of the term “town hall”, as well as determining the budget, difficult, particularly with regard to the specific purpose cash system which dominated in municipal accounting and covered the revenues and expenses of particular administrative departments and municipal tribunals. Revenues directly related to the town hall building included those generated by council monopolies for selling imported beer and heavy wines in the town hall cellars. Dividing the commercial and official functions among other rooms depended mainly on local circumstances, and it seems that this was typical of the early phase of a town hall’s operations.

This article presents the origins and structure of German surnames in the Old Town Braniewo in the 15th century. The author verified the presence of the preposition “von”, surname variants, Lower German roots, and evident linguistic phenomena which occurred in them. The discussed surnames are derived from first names, place of origin, nicknames and the names of occupations. Other names are multi-motif surnames, or it was impossible to explain their etymology. As for the structure of the described anthroponyms, non-derivative surnames predominate. Only in the case of one surname were variants recorded. Middle Low German and Lower German provenance is present in about 25% of the examined anthroponyms. In some surnames, manifestations of the East Central German dialect are visible. Several anthroponyms have been Polonised, and one was subject to a contraction.

Opis:
Parafia uniejowska należała do nielicznych w Polsce parafii o wieloosobowej obsadzie plebańskiej.
In the 15th century, the Uniejów parish was one of a few parishes in Poland which had two parsons: one who took care of parishioners living in the town, and the other – of parishioners in rural areas. The paper characterizes the 15th century group of Uniejów parish priests as well as addresses a broader issue of parishes with more than one priests, including property regulations and mutual relations between the parsons.

Opis:
The author discusses the question of diplomatic contacts between Western Africans and Portugal in the second half of the 15th century. They were preceded by voluntary visits of free Africans to Portugal, which was followed by the organisation of several legations in Benin and Wolof states (Jolof and Cayor). These events had an impact on the Portuguese-African contacts, despite being occasional. Analysing the course of negotiations, accompanying ceremonials, political propaganda tools and the outcome of the talks, the author attempts to present and evaluate the political goals of both sides, the possibilities of Christianisation and the influence that these events had on the relations between people from different cultures and on their mentalities.

Opis:
The article presents the Lithuanian expedition carried out in Livonia in the winter of 1579. On the basis of the itinerary [itinerarium] and iconographic and written sources it has been established that three regiments were to act in a coordinated manner to conduct the military action against the Russian Empire. All the three regiments were to set off from Kieś [Wenden] and through different ways reach Dorpat [Tartu] occupied by the Russians. The whole expedition included about 200 cavalry soldiers and about 400 common infantry soldiers [Polish: drab] along with several light artillery and a numerous lager. Owing to the activities undertaken by the three regiments, destructions were much more extensive, more loot was acquired and military successes were more significant – the castle of Kierepeć was conquered. The activity of three separate regiments confused the enemy and prevented them from undertaking the effective defence. The expedition was carried out from 16 February to 6 March, which also affected its outcome. The late winter provided the best conditions for the land communication, while the upcoming thaw made it impossible for the enemy to launch the counter-defence. It resulted in the safe return to Kieś and a lack of Moscovite units sent from Dorpat. To my way of thinking, the winter expedition of 1579 to Livonia was the best example of the manoeuvre art of the Polish-Lithuanian army in the 16th century. The routes of two regiments (the left one and the central one) ran close to each other, while the third one (the right one) had a totally different route entering the Russian lands from the back. The right regiment was commanded by the Oberst [Colonel] of Courland Jürgen Buttler, who conquered the castle of Kierepeć [Kirempe]. The main unit was commanded by Krzysztof Radziwiłł nicknamed “Perkūnas”, who plundered the vicinities of Dorpat. The analysis of the itinerary of 1579 prepared by Krzysztof Radziwiłł indicates that the mile recorded there corresponded to 8 kilometres. The average daily velocity of the expedition Kieś–Dorpat–Kieć amounted to 21.55 km, which corresponded to 2.7 miles. During the expedition the regiments covered from 250 to 310 km, which along with the return journey amounted to 500 km.

South Slavonic trebnik in the 15th century
Vladislav the Grammarian
Opis:
The article explores and offers a diplomatic edition of A Very Useful Confession for Unction for Every Christian, for the Black and White Clergy. This is an autograph by Vladislav the Grammarian placed in the Trebnik of Monk David (1480s), manuscript 1/42 in the collection of the Rila Monastery. The analysis is based on the working hypothesis that after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans was perceived as a God’s punishment for the sins of the Orthodox Christians. This idea became strongly present in a number of texts. Penitential prayer patterns multiply in the literature. The Greek prototype of the text under study has not been identified yet, but features a close relation to the prayers with the so-called accumulation of sins. It is, in essence, a confession which is performed in connection with the sacrament of the eleosvet (anointing of the sick) before receiving communion and the anointing with holy oil. The textual unit was purposefully introduced into Monk David’s Trebnik and reflected topical textual additions to the basic composition of the Slavonic Trebnik.

Opis:
Culinary literature of the Crown of Aragon toward the end of the Middle Ages – analysis of the sources as well as of the scope and main topics of existing research The article contains an analysis of the fundamental directions of research devoted to four medieval manuscripts which had been created towards the end of the Middle Ages: Llibre de Sent Sovi, Llibre de totes maneres de potages de menjar, Llibre d’aparellar de menjar and Llibre de totes maneres de confits. The starting point of the analysis was a critical edition of the individual collections which made it possible to carry out more in-depth studies devoted to the origin of the recipes, their mutual relations as well as their transfer between the manuscripts. A derivative of this research was a linguistic analysis concerning the culinary terminology, which was often conducted within a wider context of studies devoted to the Catalan language. Another issue which was raised in the study concerned the gastronomical customs operating on the territory of medieval Catalonia. On the basis of these scientific analyses, there appeared some popular publications which popularized our knowledge about the above problem as well as the Catalan culinary literature. Another valuable aftermath of the research consisted in attempts to adapt the medieval recipes to the requirements of the contemporary cuisine. In the final part of the dissertation the author characterizes concisely the research methods which he had used in the studies on the Catalan culinary literature; he ends the dissertation with a presentation of his subsequent research postulates.
