In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, in which Pope Francis wrote about some of the modern world challenges, he pointed out to the challenges for urban cultures emphasizing the fact, that “the new cultures (…) constantly being born in these vast new expanses where Christians are no longer the customary interpreters or generators of meaning” along with changes undergoing there “create are a privileged locus of the new evangelization” (EG 73). The Pope also noted that “this challenges us to imagine innovative spaces and possibilities for prayer and communion which are more attractive and meaningful for city dwellers” (ibidem). Responding to the Pope’s appeal, the author of this article addresses the issue of the future of the pastoral ministry carried out in the cities in the spirit of the pastoral conversion and missionary pastoral ministry (EG 25; 33-35). at the beginning, he presents the chosen sociological determinants concerning the urban pastoral ministry (1), then he describes the theological grounds of the urban pastoral ministry, pointing out to the teaching of the Magisterium regarding the pastoral conversion and missionary pastoral ministry (2). The final result of his reflections is depicting the lines of action which would lead to the renewal and development of the pastoral ministry in the cities in Poland (3).

Mając na uwadze zadania ewangelizacyjne parafii we współczesnym świecie, Kongregacja Duchowieństwa, w dniu 29 czerwca 2020 roku wydała Instrukcję Nawrócenie pastoralne wspólnoty parafialnej w posłudze misji ewangelizacyjnej Kościoła. Dokument ten, składający się z dziesięciu rozdziałów, zawiera wyjaśnienie licznych przepisów CIC dotyczących parafii i duszpasterzy. Autor omawia trzy podstawowe, najbardziej „newralgiczne” rozdziały Instrukcji: VII. Parafia i inne jednostki wewnętrzne diecezji. VIII. Formy zwyczajne i nadzwyczajne powierzenia opieki pasterskiej o wspólnotę parafialną. IX. Funkcje i posługi parafialne. Postanowienia tych rozdziałów w przeważającej mierze odnoszą się do określonych norm CIC, dotyczących przede wszystkim parafii oraz osób i instytucji z nią związanych. Ukazano w nich rolę parafii jako szczególnego miejsca w misji ewangelizacyjnej Kościoła, a także wyjaśniono wiele kwestii związanych z posługą duszpasterską kapłanów (przede wszystkim proboszczów), diakonów, osób konsekrowanych i wiernych świeckich.
Taking into account the evangelization tasks of the parish in the modern world, on June 29, 2020, the Congregation of the Clergy issued the Instruction “Pastoral conversion of the parish community in the service of the evangelizing mission of the Church”. This document, which is divided into ten chapters, explains the many CIC regulations regarding parishes and pastors. The author discusses three basic, most “critical” chapters of the Instruction: VII. The parish and other internal units of the diocese. VIII. Ordinary and extraordinary forms of entrusting pastoral care to the parish community. IX. Functions and parish services. The provisions of these chapters overwhelmingly refer to certain CIC norms concerning, first and foremost, parishes and people and institutions associated with them. They show the role of the parish as a special place in the Church’s evangelizing mission, and explain many issues related to the pastoral ministry of priests (especially parish priests), deacons, consecrated persons and lay faithful.

This article presents the Congregation for the Clergy’s reflection on the state of the parish and conditions for pastoral care. The congregation’s most recent instruction entitled The Pastoral Conversion of the Parish Community in the Service of the Evangelizing Mission of the Church presents the authors’ vision for renewal of the parish community and pastoral care within the parish setting. This article is the first of its kind to present the bases for, the conditions of, and the direction that such renewal should take. The need for renewal stems primarily from ongoing cultural changes that are taking place in the modern world. The renewal should transform the parish into a sanctuary where the Word of God is proclaimed in a way that the faithful understand. The parish should become a place of deep devotion to the Eucharist and a shelter for every person in need. In order to renew the parish, it is necessary to change parish structures. It is also fitting to introduce changes concerning the agents of pastoral care and to engage the laity in pastoral care of the parish. Through textual and comparative analysis as well as textual criticism, the author presents the model of parish pastoral care according to the Instruction The Pastoral Conversion of the Parish Community in the Service of the Evangelizing Mission of the Church.

On 20th July 2020 Congregation for the Clergy issued an instruction The pastoral conversion of the Parish community in the service of the evangelising mission of the Church. This document brings together the previous teachings of the Magisterium regarding the Parish community, approaching them from the perspective of the Pope Francis’s teaching calling for pastoral conversion of the whole Church, which should result in the missionary attitude of bringing the message of Gospel to all the people. Issuing of the instruction evoked different responses. Some of them were positive, praising the presenting of the integrated knowledge regarding the legal basis of the Parrish community functioning, as well as speaking highly of this document in the context of mapping out a wide range of the contemporary circumstances in which the parishes function. Also, providing the inspiration for the renewal of the Parish Ministry was ap-preciated. However, some criticisms were also raised, regarding the lack of new solutions aiming at involving the lay faithful in the life of the Parish community, putting too little emphasis on the necessity of the personal parishes development and the offer of the detailed pastoral methods. The author describes the main ideas included in this document, which has not reached a wider readership in Poland. At the same time, he (1), presents the discussion that the issuing of the instruction has evoked (2), referring to the document itself and suggesting some inspiration for creative searching for the ways of reaching the renewal of the Parish community in the context of the Pastoral conversion (3).

The divisions among Christians are „a scandal to the world” and detrimental to the preaching of the Gospel, because of the impression „as if Christ himself were divided”. Hence the lack of unity is the biggest obstacle to mission in the world. In this perspective, the pastoral conversion is presented as an opportunity for ecumenism. It is all about repentance toward re-seek unity and toward the common goal of ecumenism, that is visible unity of the Church as the Body of Christ. Another aspect of the conversion relates to the great tradition of Christianity. An important issue here is the question of the attitude of the Reformation to the whole tradition of the Church. Surely a monopoly on reform of the Church can not be attributed only to the Reformation. Great reformers of the Church were also St. Dominic and St. Francis. Because in the original way the conversion is accomplished in baptism, Christian ecumenism should be at its core, a „baptismal ecumenism”. Finally, the ecumenical movement can rely on joining the prayer of Jesus „that they may all be one” (Jn 17,21).
Podziały między chrześcijanami są „zgorszeniem dla świata” oraz przynoszą szkodę przepowiadaniu Ewangelii, gdyż sprawiają wrażenie, „jak gdyby sam Chrystus był podzielony”. Stąd brak jedności stanowi największą przeszkodę dla misji światowych. W takiej perspektywie pastoralne nawrócenie przedstawia się jako szansa dla ekumenizmu. Chodzi przede wszystkim o nawrócenie w kierunku ponownego poszukiwania jedności oraz ku wspólnemu celowi ekumenizmu, jakim jest widzialna jedność Kościoła jako Ciała Chrystusa. Kolejny aspekt nawrócenia dotyczy wielkiej tradycji chrześcijaństwa. Ważnym zagadnieniem jest tutaj kwestia stosunku Reformacji do całej tradycji Kościoła. Z pewnością Reformacji nie można przypisywać monopolu na reformę Kościoła. Wielkimi odnowicielami Kościoła byli także św. Dominik i św. Franciszek. Ponieważ nawrócenie w pierwotny sposób dokonuje się we chrzcie, ekumenizm chrześcijański winien być w swoim rdzeniu „ekumenizmem chrzcielnym”. Ostatecznie ruch ekumeniczny może polegać jedynie na włączeniu się w modlitwę Jezusa, „aby wszyscy stanowili jedno” (J 17,21).

Missionary transformation of the Church and the pastoral conversion is a basic postulate in the teaching of pope Francis. He sees in it one of the most urgent tasks, which the community of the Church has to face now. The transformation has to rely primarily on the total focusing on evangelization, what was the experience of the community of the early Christians. Everything in the Church, each of its space and structure, has to serve the fundamental vocation for preaching the Gospel. For this purpose it is necessary to revise the existing methods, forms and language of evangelization, and update them to modern socio-cultural conditions. The author of Evangelii gaudium points to the vision of the Church coming out to the man to find him in his living environment, to lead to the experience of a personal encounter with God and start participating in the Community. Not only ecclesiastical structures, but also the life of every baptized person should become of evangelistic orientation, manifesting itself in full of enthusiasm answering for personal call to evangelization.

The presented article takes up the issue of missionary accommodation on the example of the Church in Cuba. It is shown in both theoretical (theology, conciliar teaching, papal teaching with special reference to Pope Francis) and practical (consultation with missionaries and the author’s own experience) assumptions. The purpose of the article is to reflect pastorally on the involvement of missionaries in pastoral ministry and to identify the essential accommodative ways used by them. The final conclusions point to the need for missionaries to be creative and open-minded in their search for new ways to evangelize, and to overcome obstacles in the way of proclaiming the Good News.

Adhortacja apostolska Evangelii gaudium posiada pastoralny charakter i jest w pewnym sensie tekstem programowym papieża Franciszka. Analizując jej treść, można wskazać kilka priorytetów pastoralnych, które są aktualne również w polskiej rzeczywistości. Novum adhortacji to wezwanie do misyjnego przeobrażenia Kościoła, nazywanego także nawróceniem pastoralnym. Takie nawrócenie zakłada oderwanie się od utartych ścieżek działalności zbawczej i odważne poszukiwanie nowych rozwiązań, aby dotrzeć z Dobrą Nowiną także do tych, którzy są na peryferiach Kościoła. Wśród priorytetów pastoralnej posługi Kościoła w Polsce można także wymienić duszpasterstwo rodzin i duszpasterstwo związków niesakramentalnych. Ważnym tematem jest radosne głoszenie Dobrej Nowiny przez wszystkie stany w Kościele-Wspólnocie, który naucza i jednocześnie jest nauczany. Papież Franciszek sporo uwagi poświęcił stylowi posługi ewangelizacyjnej oraz preferencyjnej opcji na rzecz ubogich.
Evangelii Gaudium, an apostolic exhortation, has a pastoral character and it may be regarded as the manifesto of Pope Francis. The analysis of its content can point to some pastoral priorities which are also present in the Polish reality. The novelty of the exhortation is a vocation to the missionary transformation of the Church, also known as a pastoral conversion. This conversion involves the separation from the beaten track of the redeeming activity and the brave quest for new solutions in order to spread the Good News to those who are on the periphery of the Church. Among the priorities of the pastoral ministry of the Church in Poland, one can also name the pastoral care of families, as well as of non-sacramental marriages. The joyful proclamation of the Good News for all states in the Church-Community is also an important theme, which teaches and is taught at the same time. Pope Francis gives his due attention to the style of the ministry of evangelization and the preferential option for the poor.

Przygotowanie do bierzmowania młodych ludzi staje się dziś jednym z najtrudniejszych wyzwań dla duszpasterstwa w Polsce. Wykorzystywany przez lata tradycyjny i nieco klerykalny model formacyjny można dziś uznać za nieaktualny. Reprezentanci młodego pokolenia, podejmując przygotowanie do sakramentu bierzmowania, dają dziś ostatnią szansę wspólnocie Kościoła. Może ona ją wykorzystać do skutecznej ewangelizacji, bądź też, ufając w klasyczne, nieaktualne metody i założenia formacyjne, wykazać indyferentyzm wobec promowanej przez Ojca Świętego Franciszka koncepcji nawrócenia pastoralnego, tracąc tym samym kontakt z młodymi ludźmi. Perspektywa efektywnego przekazu Dobrej Nowiny kandydatom do bierzmowania, a także wzmacnianie w nich fundamentów wiary jest wyzwaniem duszpasterskim, wymagającym zmiany dotychczasowej mentalności. Młodzi w poszczególnych wspólnotach parafialnych mogą doświadczyć działania Ducha Świętego i piękna żywego Kościoła. Aby tak się stało, należy porzucić formalistyczne myślenie, nastawione bardziej na budowę struktur niż na rozwój duchowy człowieka.
Preparing young people for confirmation is becoming one of the most difficult challenges for pastoral care in Poland today. The traditional and somewhat clerical model of formation which has been used for years can be dismissed today as outdated. Representatives of the young generation who prepare themselves for the sacrament of confirmation are giving the community of the Church the last chance. The Church community can use it for effective evangelization or, while trusting in classical, outdated methods and assumptions of formation, might be indifferent towards the concept of pastoral conversion promoted by Pope Francis, thus losing contact with young people. The perspective of effectively proclaiming the Good News to the candidates for confirmation as well as enhancing their foundations of faith is a pastoral challenge which demands a change in current mentality. Young people in parish communities can experience the activity of the Holy Spirit and the beauty of the living Church. In order for this to happen, formalistic thinking needs to be abandoned, as it is focused on building the structures rather than on spiritual development of a person.

Współczesny Kościół nawołuje wszystkich wiernych do podjęcia mentalnego nawrócenia, które ma polegać na uświadomieniu sobie na nowo swojej tożsamości i wypływającego z niej posłania do dzieła ewangelizacji. Jednym ze sposobów pastoralnego nawrócenia jest podjęcie pięciu kroków, które symbolizuje pierwszych pięć liter alfabetu: A, B, C, D, E. Aby stać się autentycznym ewangelizatorem, należy najpierw adorować Boga, modlić się, następnie być dla ludzi bratem i siostrą, starać się praktykować chrześcijańską caritas (miłość) i czuć się uczniem Jezusa. Dopiero wtedy, gdy te kroki będą podjęte, osoba wierząca stanie się z pomocą łaski Bożej autentycznym ewangelizatorem.
The contemporary Church urges all the believers to take up mental conversion, which is to re-realize their identity and the message that flows from it to the work of evangelization. One of the ways of pastoral conversion is to take five steps that symbolize the first five letters of the alphabet – A, B, C, D, E. To become an authentic evangelizer, one should adore God first, pray, then be a brother and sister to people, try to practice Christian Caritas and feel the disciple of Jesus. Only when these steps are taken will a believer, by God’s Grace, become a true evangelizer.

In this article the author presents certain aspects of pastoral work with youth, describing young people’s reality and the dynamic of pastoral work in Latin America, as well as certain aspects of pastoral work with youth for an “outward-reaching” Church. Criteria are indicated for the pastoral accompaniment of Latin American young people today, from a model of Church which Pope Francis has denominated “outward-reaching” (or “going forth”). This model challenges us to rethink pastoral work with youth, situating it in the horizon of the path of pastoral action in the perspective of Aparecida, which allows us to “deeply rethink and relaunch [the Church’s] mission in current Latin American and global circumstances with fidelity and audacity” (DA 11). This requires that the Church show its readiness to appreciate, value and encourage pastoral initiatives and processes that are developing “outside” of explicit parochial spheres, so as to immerse itself in the missionary adventure towards and into spaces where young people are on the margins. Without doubt this means reconsidering the forms in which parochial and wider ecclesial life is organized. This challenge implies leaving behind pre-designed blueprints in order to meet young people there where they are, in the majority of cases outside the Church, adapting to their times and rhythms. This paper presents four nuclear problems posed by CELAM (Latin American Episcopal Council) for 2015–2019 (social injustice, the deterioration of creation, violence and migration), which question the Church in its evangelizing task and open a challenging panorama for an “outward reaching” pastoral work with youth. Missionary activity which takes these four nuclear problems seriously lets arise a “new subject who emerges in history and which we call disciple” (DA 243), an active member of the Church and a citizen capable of making a significant contribution to society. It becomes obvious that pastoral work with youth in the service of the spreading the Good News isn’t under discussion, but rather is launched with the aim that the light of Christ shine on the faces of the poor and the reality of our peoples. A new model opens up for an “outward reaching” pastoral work with youth, centred in the following of Christ and at the service of life, that is to say with greater impact on society.
En el artículo el autor presenta algunos aspectos de la Pastoral Juvenil (PJ), describiendo la realidad juvenil y la dinámica pastoral desde América Latina. Vienen también presentados algunos aspectos de la PJ para una “Iglesia en salida” y se indica los criterios para un acompañamiento pastoral a los jóvenes latinoamericanos hoy, desde el modelo de Iglesia que el papa Francisco ha denominado “en salida” y que nos desafía a repensar la PJ ubicándola en el horizonte de la reforma eclesial que este pontificado viene impulsando. Se trata de buscar e encontrar el camino de la pastoral en la perspectiva de Aparecida, que permita “repensar profundamente y relanzar con fidelidad y audacia la misión [de la Iglesia] en las nuevas circunstancias latinoamericanas y mundiales” (DA 11). Esto requiere de la Iglesia mostrar su disponibilidad a apreciar, valorar y alentar las iniciativas y procesos pastorales que están en desarrollo “fuera” del ámbito explícito de las parroquias, para insertarse en aventura misionera hacia y dentro de las periferias juveniles y sin duda esto supone un replanteamiento de las formas de organizar la vida parroquial y eclesial más amplia. Este reto exige salir de los propios esquemas pre-confeccionados, para encontrar a los jóvenes allí donde están, es decir en mayoría de los casos fuera de la Iglesia, adecuándose a sus tiempos y a sus ritmos. En el texto vienen presentados cuatro núcleos problemáticos que plantea el CELAM para el cuatrienio 2015–2019 (la injusticia social, el deterioro de la creación, la violencia y el flujo migratorio), que interpelan a la Iglesia para su tarea evangelizadora y abren un panorama desafiante para una Pastoral Juvenil “en salida”. Con la acción misionera que toma en serio estos cuatro núcleos se está formando, “un sujeto nuevo que surge en la historia y al que llamamos discípulo” (DA 243), miembro activo de la Iglesia y ciudadano capaz de incidir significativamente en la sociedad. Es evidente, entonces, que una PJ evangelizadora, no se discute, sino se la pone en camino, trabajando para lograr que la luz de Jesucristo ilumine los rostros de los pobres y la realidad de nuestros pueblos. Se abre pues una nuevo modelo para la PJ “en salida”, centrado en el seguimiento de Cristo y al servicio de la vida, es decir, con mayor incidencia en la sociedad.

Adhortacja Evangelii gaudium jest owocem odbytego w Rzymie od 7 do 28 października 2012 roku XIII Zwyczajnego Zgromadzenia Ogólnego Synodu Biskupów na temat: Nowa ewangelizacja dla przekazu wiary chrześcijańskiej. Adhortacja zawiera m.in. podstawowe wskazania pokazujące, w jaki sposób działania nazywane przez nas duszpasterstwem zwyczajnym powinny uzyskać ducha misyjnego. Franciszek wymienia kilka instytucji kościelnych, które odgrywają ważną rolę w działalności duszpasterskiej: parafia (EG 28), diecezja (EG 30) oraz papiestwo (EG 32). Papież najpierw analizuje duszpasterstwo misyjne na polu parafii, później diecezji, a na końcu podejmuje temat papiestwa. Misja Kościoła wychodzi nie z centrum, ale z peryferii. Pojawia się także wezwanie o przełamanie pewnego schematu myślowego, ponieważ „duszpasterstwo w kluczu misyjnym wymaga rezygnacji z wygodnego kryterium pasterskiego, że «zawsze się tak robiło»” (EG 33).
The Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), is the fruit of the work of the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, held in the Vatican, from 7 to 28 October 2012, on the theme “The New Evangelisation for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”. In it, pope Francis encourages pastoral ministers to inject more missionary spirituality to what is known as their ordinary pastoral ministry. He mentions several important church institutions which aid pastoral ministry: parish (EG 28), diocese (EG 30), and papacy (EG 32), and analyses each of them in the context of missionary pastoral ministry. Church’s mission originates in the peripheries, not in the centre. The pope urges pastoral ministers to disaffiliate themselves from thought patterns, because “(...) a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: We have always done it this way” (EG 33).

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opis wyzwań moralnych związanych z prowadzoną przez papieża Franciszka reformą Kurii Rzymskiej na podstawie analizy dziewięciu jego przemówień do kurialistów rzymskich z lat 2013-2021. Ich owocem była publikacja w 2022 roku Konstytucji apostolskiej Praedicate Evangelium. W tekście przedstawione zostały: wartość wrażliwości etycznej pracownika kurii i potrzeba praktykowania określonych cnót, konieczność walki z różnymi problemami i „chorobami” w pracy kurialnej, a także odpowiedzialność Kurii Rzymskiej za sam Kościół w jego wymiarze ad intra oraz za rzeczywistość ad extra.
The purpose of this article is to describe the moral challenges of Pope Francis' ongoing reform of the Roman Curia, based on an analysis of nine of his speeches to Roman curialists in 2013-2021, which resulted in the publication of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium in 2022. The text presents the value of the ethical sensitivity of a curial worker and the need to practice certain virtues, the need to combat various problems and 'diseases' in curial work, as well as the responsibility of the Roman Curia for the Church itself in its ad intra dimension and for ad extra reality.

Celem artykułu jest próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytanie o istotę kryzysu małżeństwa i rodziny, z jednej strony funkcjonującej w konkretnym kontekście społecznym, z drugiej zaś zakładającej odczytanie wyzwań i funkcji małżeńskich oraz rodzinnych w odniesieniu do świadomości i poziomu dojrzałości w wierze konkretnych osób. Aby lepiej zrozumieć spór wokół adhortacji Amoris laetitia, szczególnie rozdziału VIII, zaproponowano przejście raz jeszcze zasadniczej drogi przygotowań synodalnych z 2014 i 2015 roku, po to by zrozumieć nowość i jednocześnie trudność recepcji posynodalnej adhortacji. Dokonano też próby rekonstrukcji sporu, jaki miał miejsce po ogłoszeniu adhortacji. Wszystko to miało na celu doprowadzenie do istotnego pytania, co może oznaczać „nawrócenie duszpasterskie”, szczególnie w odniesieniu do osób rozwiedzionych i żyjących w nowych związkach? Przytoczony w zakończeniu artykułu dokument Dykasterii Nauki Wiary potwierdza słuszność nowego zaangażowania duszpasterskiego na rzecz towarzyszenia, rozeznania i przyjęcia osób rozwiedzionych, żyjących w nowych związkach, gdyż dopiero wtedy Kościół ukazuje prawdziwe oblicze Miłosierdzia Bożego i nowego otwarcia duszpasterskiego.
This article attempts to answer the question about the essence of the crisis of marriage and family – on the one hand operating in a specific social context, and on the other assuming a reading of the challenges and functions of marriage and family in relation to the consciousness and level of maturity in faith of specific individuals. In order to better understand the dispute over the exhortation Amoris laetitia, especially the chapter 8, it was proposed to go once again through the essential path of the synodal preparations of 2014 and 2015, in order to understand the novelty and at the same time the difficulty of the reception of the post-synodal exhortation. The paper also reconstructs the dispute that followed the promulgation of the exhortation. All of this was aimed at leading to the important question of what „pastoral conversion” can mean, especially with regard to divorced people and those living in new relationships? The document of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, cited at the end of the article, confirms the validity of a new pastoral commitment to accompany, discern and welcome divorced persons living in new relationships, because only then does the Church show the true face of God’s mercy and a new pastoral opening.

The issue of testimony in evangelization is today quite widely addressed, both in pastoral literature and in the formation of new movements within the Church. The teaching of the Church also raises this issue as the center of evangelization engagement. In this paper, we engage the problem of the role of testimony from the point of view of the evangelization movements, and its importance for the new evangelization. Our analysis of this topic first addresses the problem of the aim set by the new religious movements, and which is: the transformation of human life under the influence of an encounter with Christ and one’s witness to it. The testimony, which is intended to attract a man to Christ, is born of a certain Christian experience and is the result of a personal relationship with God. This origin of the testimony dictates the motivation of the witness. This motivation is included in the testimony of life, which is a tool for both pre-evangelization and evangelization. Testimony of one’s word has its center of gravity in the proclamation of the kerygma and the Gospel of grace. Fruitful testimony strengthens the identity of disciple-missionary and co-creates pastoral conversion of ecclesial communities. This is also an expression of the call of the new evangelization to the baptized who have lost a personal relationship with Christ and the Church.
