    Since the inception of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, music, especially liturgical music, has played a vital role. In religious formation and with the recommended thoughts of their Founder, the Sisters have learned religious songs which later proved to be useful in liturgies and in their work with children in the day cares. Blessed Edmund Bojanowski was meticulous in choosing a fitting repertoire, appropriate music and musically trained and talented Sisters. For 150 years, the Silesian Sisters have cultivated musical traditions. Organists, choir directors, pedagogues in church institutions, cantors, music teachers in schools and day cares, these Sisters have striven to spread the Faith precisely through beautiful music and songs for the glory of God. They have undertaken various musical and liturgical initiatives in their convents, in their dioceses and throughout the whole country during celebrations. They have concerned themselves immensely about music and have even published their own liturgical song books. They have also undertaken different initiatives which emphasize the requirements of their Founder as specifically concerns the care of preschool and day care children and church hymns throughout all the Congregations of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate.

    The period of the Enlightenment within the context of the Polish cultural history commenced as late as in the 2nd half of the 18th century and corresponds with the time of the reign of king Stanislaus August Poniatowski (1764-1795). His patronage created favourable conditions for the development of literature and arts, including the music. There are three genres of music characteristic of this period: vocals (religious, secular, patriotic, festive and idyllic songs), vocal-instrumental pieces (operas, cantatas, oratories, church sonatas, solo sonatas with accompaniment) and instrumentals (symphonies, chamber music and piano concertos). When it comes to the style of the Polish Enlightenment music, it drew from the early Classicism and the native musical folklore. In those days there was a tendency to render the home art more ‘national’. The church music from the Polish Enlightenment period does not match in its artistic value that of Baroque. However, it has earned a prominent place in the history of the sacred music in Poland.

    The author presents epithets describing God’s Son, Jesus Christ in “Church Hymns” published by Instytut Wydawniczy “Pax” in 1978, translated by priest Tadeusz Karylowski. In the introduction the author informs about the studied and partly published epithets of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit, God the Father, the Holy Trinity and saints in the mentioned “Church Hymns” and in “Church Songs” printed in “Church Songbook” by priest Jan Siedlecki. The author gives reasons why it is essential to publish those epithets and then presents quite extensive material, giving Latin titles and as far as the hymns are concerned, he locates the discussed names according to pages, strophes and lines.

    In this article, the primary focus is the tradition of brass bands and orchestras in the lifestyles of Samogitia’s towns and villages in the 20th–21st century. This music-making fromLithuania’s western region (Lith. Žemaitija) is no doubt related to the development of Lithuania’s musical culture as a whole. Therefore, on the basis of historical sources, the author briefly covers the development of ensembles in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The formation of brass ensembles’ tradition was particularly impacted by the celebrations of Catholic Church holidays and solemn processions (particularly in the 17th–18th century), and later – manor orchestras and music schools (end of the 18th–19th century). It was in Samogitia that music-making with brass instruments thrived until the very beginning of the 21st century. The author, on the basis of data collected mainly during fieldworks, reveals the role of brass bands in this region’s folk piety, family and community customs, this tradition’s changes.
    W artykule główny nacisk położono na tradycję zespołów i orkiestr dętych w życiu miast i wiosek Żmudzi w XX i XXI wieku. Muzyka z zachodniego regionu Litwy jest niewątpliwiezwiązana z rozwojem litewskiej kultury muzycznej jako całości. Dlatego też, sięgając do źródeł historycznych, autorka w skrócie opisuje rozwój orkiestr w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim. Na powstanie tradycji orkiestr dętych szczególnie wpłynęły obchody świąt katolickich i uroczyste procesje (zwłaszcza w XVII I XVIII wieku), później także funkcjonowanie dworskich orkiestr i szkół muzycznych (koniec XVIII I XIX wiek). Na Żmudzi muzyka instrumentów z mosiądzu rozwijała się do samego początku XXI wieku. Autorka, na podstawie danych zebranych głównie podczas prac terenowych, ujawnia rolę orkiestr dętych w religiności ludowej tego regionu, zwyczajerodzinne i wspólnotowe oraz zmiany zachodzące w tradycji.
