    The power of women’s words in K.J. Erben’s balladsdiscusses the author’s literary texts (the collections  Písně and  Kytice),  in  which  the  woman  is  presented  as  a  permanent  character who is in the focus of significant conflict situations and moral problems. Women’s words have  a  broad spectrum  of  expression:  from  the  intimate  address  to  oneself,  through  the prayer, the blessing, the divination, and the imprecation, to the prophecy. Women’s words refer to a peculiar reflection of the collective memory and norm, but at the same time they bring the woman out of her anonymity, individualizing her in her own desires and intentions.

    Opis:
    This paper describes a Deep Belief Neural Network (DBNN) and Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) hybrid used as an acoustic model for Speech Recognition. It was demonstrated by many independent researchers that DBNNs exhibit superior performance to other known machine learning frameworks in terms of speech recognition accuracy. Their superiority comes from the fact that these are deep learning networks. However, a trained DBNN is simply a feed-forward network with no internal memory, unlike Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) which are Turing complete and do posses internal memory, thus allowing them to make use of longer context. In this paper, an experiment is performed to make a hybrid of a DBNN with an advanced bidirectional RNN used to process its output. Results show that the use of the new DBNN-BLSTM hybrid as the acoustic model for the Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition (LVCSR) increases word recognition accuracy. However, the new model has many parameters and in some cases it may suffer performance issues in real-time applications.

    Opis:
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest komunistyczne pojmowanie czasu i postępu. Punkt wyjścia stanowi nowe rozumienie destalinizacji: Wychodzę z założenia, że rok 1956 wyznacza nie tyle początek końca komunizmu, co początek nowego etapu jego historii – poststalinizmu -, na którym wykształciło się zarazem specyficzne podejście do czasu. Podjęty przez Chruszczowa rozrachunek ze stalinizmem wstrząsnął koncepcją „żelaznych praw rozwoju” i skierował uwagę ku nieobliczalności historii. Wraz z utratą pewności historycznej spowolnieniu uległ bieg czasu. Przedmiotem mojej analizy są wybrane aspekty procesów destalinizacji dokonujących się w krajach tzw. trójkąta północnego, czyli w NRD, Czechosłowacji i Polsce. W odróżnieniu od większości dotychczasowych opracowań, nie ograniczam się do badania oficjalnej ideologii, lecz próbuję zrozumieć sposoby pojmowania czasu w ideologicznej codzienności. Szczególnie interesują mnie przy tym wzajemne oddziaływania między poszczególnymi płaszczyznami partyjnej hierarchii – między centrum i peryferiami, między kierownictwem i bazą oraz między aparatem i aktywem. Jak pokazuję, poststalinizm zdecydowanie różnił się od przyśpieszającego bieg czasu stalinizmu i stagnacji późnego socjalizmu. Specyficzny rytm poststalinizmu jako epoki ambiwalencji rozciągającej się od roku 1956 roku do późnych lat sześćdziesiątych, wyznaczało napięcie między traumą stalinistycznej przeszłości i kolejnym marzeniem o komunistycznej utopii.

    This article analyses the amendments of January 2018 to the Act on the Institute of National Remembrance (INR) of 1998, which has raised doubts in light of international law and provoked diplomatic tensions between Poland on one side and Germany, Ukraine, United States of America and Israel on the other. The INR is a national institution whose role is, among others, to prosecute perpetrators of international crimes committed between 19171990. The article proves that the wording of the amendments is inconsistent with international law, as it ignores the principles of international responsibility, definitions of international crimes, and disproportionately limits freedom of expression. In consequence, it cannot be expected that third states will cooperate with Poland in the execution of responsibility for violation of the newly adopted norms.

Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, through Lyndon Hardy’s magical worlds, Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea and AnnMcCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series, speech carries an added value of truth, preserving and shaping the universe in turn – such understanding of privileged speech links modern fantasy literature to its ancient models (Homer or Hesiod).

    Opis:
    The article documents cases of grammatical, phonetic and lexical “irregularities” occurring in modern Russian. The conclusions are based on analysis of the National Corpus of the Russian Language and internet queries. The author pays special attention to phrases indicating time relations: “for some time” / “after what time”. It is noted that there is an “older” and “younger” standard for using collocations with the lexeme „time” and prepositions, and the change in the norm resulted from the transition from treating space-time as an abstract, uniform chronotope to the idea of time as a discrete quantity, i.e. certain fragmented, countable sections (century, year, month, day, hour, minute, second). Research has shown that discrete forms denoting time began to dominate from the mid-nineteenth century, which is related to the changes in the image of the world taking place at that time. The old ways of speaking about time, however, still appear in modern Russian. The article shows that other lexical and inflectional archaisms (e.g. short forms of adjectives) are also returning to modern speech. This can be considered a manifestation of social linguistic memory, which involves having the ability to recall and use old forms or meanings, according to norms that used to be applied in the past. The author proposes that this phenomenon be called “spontaneous recurrence of the norm”. It is claimed that such recurrence of the old norm may be caused either by speakers’ ignorance of the current norm or by their desire for a “retro” style that results from fashion or manners. It could also be a manifestation of “language refreshment” through the activation of speech memory, or retrieving former forms and old standards out of the “subconscious” of language users.

    Collective memory, defined as ‘acollection of imagesof community members about their past which are included in cultural texts,’ (Wójcicka 2015: 68), ‘images about the past activated in the process of social communication in order to meet the cul-tural and political needs of the present’ (Czachur 2018: 11), is unavailable directly. It can be reached only through representation of the past expressed in different kinds of signs. Thus, collective memory has the character of a sign. Based on that assumption, the author presents the style and genre diversity of collective memory. She shows the role of language style in collective memory and puts forward a ques-tion about what function speech genre has in remembering, recalling, reminding and forgetting. She presents complex relations between memory and speech genre, which she treats as a sign of oblivion. In the last part of the article, the author offers a typology of memory genres distinguishing primarily (intentionally) mnemonic and secondarily(functionally) mnemonic genres.

    Language can be not only a communication tool but also a dangerous weapon. In this interview, Michał Głowiński, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Literary Research (IBL), writer, author of numerous literary and scholarly publications, including Zła mowa [Bad Speech], a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust, shares his traumatic memories and talks about verbal aggression, which is an alarm bell warning that physical aggression is to come. Following the tragic events of the mid-twentieth century, language can no longer be treated as “the house of being”: before the first brick of extermination camps was laid, the word of hatred had thundered first. This is why it is so important to remember the past and to carefully analyse the language of the present, so that the horrible story of the Holocaust can never happen again. The Holocaust is the greatest tragedy of the twentieth century, which brutally destroyed millions of Jews. It also put an end to survivors’ hope of achieving a harmony of self-identity. The Holocaust must be remembered. Literature is one of the tools for keeping it in memory and taking a closer look at all the crimes that were committed. The painful experience of the Holocaust has been reflected in the works of Jewish writers. It is also at the roots of tragic contradictions, the sense of internal emptiness and loss of empathy.
    Język może być nie tylko narzędziem komunikacji, ale i niebezpieczną bronią. W wywiadzie Michał Głowiński, emerytowany profesor Instytutu Badań Literackich, pisarz, badacz języka publicznego, autor licznych prac literaturoznawczych oraz naukowych, w tym wciąż aktualnej książki Zła mowa, polski Żyd ocalały z Holocaustu, dzieli się traumatycznymi wspomnieniami oraz opowiada o agresji werbalnej, która jest pierwszym niepokojącym sygnałem alarmowym, ostrzegającym przed nadejściem agresji fizycznej. Po tragicznych wydarzeniach pierwszej połowy XX wieku języka już nie sposób traktować jedynie jako „domu istnienia”, bo zanim położono pierwszą cegłę, budując fabrykę Zagłady, najpierw zabrzmiały słowa nienawiści. Właśnie dlatego tak ważna jest pamięć o przeszłości i uważne badanie języka teraźniejszości, by chronić przed powtórką scenariusza potwornej historii Zagłady. Holocaust jest bowiem największą tragedią XX wieku, która była nie tylko zbrodnią na milionach Żydów, ale również odebraniem Ocalałym szansy na odbudowę harmonijnej, nienaznaczonej traumą tożsamości. Pamięć o tych wydarzeniach jest naszym dziedzictwem. Literatura jest jednym ze światów, który pozwala zachować pamięć oraz z bliska przyjrzeć się zbrodniom. Bolesne doświadczenia Shoah znajdują odzwierciedlenie w twórczości pisarzy żydowskich oraz leżą u podstaw tragicznych sprzeczności, wewnętrznej pustki i utraty wrażliwości.

    This paper addresses the problem of part of speech (POS) tagging for the Tamil language, which is low resourced and agglutinative. POS tagging is the process of assigning syntactic categories for the words in a sentence. This is the preliminary step for many of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. For this work, various sequential deep learning models such as recurrent neural network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) were used at the word level. For evaluating the model, the performance metrics such as precision, recall, F1-score and accuracy were used. Further, a tag set of 32 tags and 225 000 tagged Tamil words was utilized for training. To find the appropriate hidden state, the hidden states were varied as 4, 16, 32 and 64, and the models were trained. The experiments indicated that the increase in hidden state improves the performance of the model. Among all the combinations, Bi-LSTM with 64 hidden states displayed the best accuracy (94%). For Tamil POS tagging, this is the initial attempt to be carried out using a deep learning model.

    Tout aidant qui fait face aux répétitions discursives et gestuelles des patients atteints de la maladie d'Alzheimer doit néanmoins mettre en place un programme de routine quotidien. Cet apparent paradoxe combine circularité d’une part et régularité d’autre part, deux principes fondés sur le même axiome: l’itération. L’itération peut entraîner l’enfermement du patient en lui-même lorsqu’elle prend la forme d’une circularité, alors qu’elle est bénéfique lorsqu’elle prend la forme d’une rassurante régularité. Cette dernière permet d’éloigner, au moins provisoirement, la menace d’un double éloignement du malade, de lui-même et de son entourage. Dans cet article, nous envisageons l’itération sous deux angles, linguistique et comportementale.
    Any caregiver who has to face the discursive and gestural repetitions of Alzheimer’s patients must nevertheless set up a daily schedule routine. This apparent paradox brings together circularity on the one hand and regularity on the other, two principles based on the same axiom: iteration. Iteration can cause the patient to be locked up within himself when it takes the shape of circularity, whereas it can be beneficial when it takes the form of a reassuring regularity. The latter removes, at least temporarily, the threat of a dual break of the patient, from himself and from his friends and family. In this article, we consider iteration from two angles, linguistic and behavioural.
