Migration always involves loss, which inspires potential writers and is itself often the focus of migrants’ narratives. Seen through this monodimensional attachment to things left behind and hence not particularly valued, written and unwri tten stories of migrants’ experiences are themselves prone to disappear, together with the memory of their authors. This paper exam-ines the work of a biographer and poet, Bogumiła Żongołłowicz, commited to recovering and preserving achievements of Polish post-war migrants in Australia, reclaiming forgotten or unappreciated literary works for future readers, and celebrating life and memory of those who would otherwise perish as well.

The paper examines the memoir The Book of My Lives by Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon. This non-fiction work explores the author’s childhood in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the collapse of Yugoslavia, and then his exile experience in Canada and the United States after the outbreak of the war. Through the prism of memory, the book deals with the subject of exiles, uprootedness and efforts to start a new life in a new environment. Being an autobiographical record, The Book of My Lives lends itself to the examination of the issue of exile and memory issues, which is one of the two themes of this paper. The second concerns the understanding of the relationship between memory and space. The paper seeks to show how the spatial dimension is also important for the creation of memory because memories represent an essential factor for the transformation of abstract space into a particular place.

Paul Ricoeur declares that “being-entangled in stories” is an inherent property of the human condition. He introduces the notion of narrative identity-a form of identity constructed on the basis of a self-constructed life-narrative, which becomes a source of meaning and self-understanding. This article wishes to present chosen instances of life writing whose subjects resist yielding a life-story and reject the notions of narrative and identity. In line with Adam Phillips’s remarks regarding Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes (1975), such works-which I refer to as fragmentary life writing-emerge out of a profound scepticism about any form of “fixing” oneself and confining the variety and randomness of experience to one of the available autobiographical plots. The primary example of the genre is Joe Brainard’s I Remember (1975)-an inventory of approximately 1,500 memories conveyed in the form of radically short passages beginning with the words “I remember.” Despite the qualified degree of unity provided by the fact that all the recollections come from the consciousness of a single person, the book does not arrange its content in any discernible order-chronological or thematic; instead, the reader is confronted with a life-in-fragments. Although individual passages could be part of a coming-of-age, a coming-out or a portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-man narrative, Brainard is careful not to let any of them consolidate. An attempt at defining the characteristics of the proposed genre will be followed by an indication of more recent examples of fragmentary life writing and a reflection on its prospects for development

This introduction presents the LSMLL volume that follows (volume entitled “Self-Narratives and Society”), and discusses five propositions: I. Self-narratives may be analyzed as rediscoveries of what the self is not, i.e. society in particular; II. Beyond questionable distinctions between autobiography, autofiction and testimonies, selfnarratives may be defined interculturally (with help from the Englishspeaking world) as (predominantly reflexive) forms of life narratives and examples of life-writing; III. Autobiography and autofiction can’t file for divorce; IV. We should joyfully call for the end of [La] *Francophonie, substitute what could be abbreviated as LEF (littérature d’expression française) to the unfortunate expression littérature *francophone, and/or play on semantic neutrality and signal the *Francophone imposture with a (typographical) countersign: *francophone, *Francophonie; V. The “culturality” inherent to self-narratives opens itself up to the question of minorities.

Celem artykułu jest wyodrębnienie nowej, nieantropocentrycznej formy pisania o przyrodzie. Analizując teksty antropolożki Anny Lowenhaupt Tsing, biolożki Urszuli Zajączkowskiej, historyczki nauki Helen Macdoland i filozofki Jolanty Brach-Czainy – wskazuję na chwyty charakteryzujące ich biopoetykę: immersyjność, rizomatyczność, asamblażowość i tentakularność. Nawiązując do formuły gatunkowej “pasażu tekstowego” (rozumianego szeroko, niekoniecznie jako pisanie i czytanie miasta) i wspierając się rozważaniami Rebeki Solnit, pokazuję, jakim ponadgatunkowym doświadczeniem jest dla flanerek wędrówka i włóczęga, które mogą zarazem być ucieczką z laboratorium. Zastanawiam się też, jak bardzo nieantropocentryczny może być tekst literacki.
he aim of this paper is to describe new, non-anthropocentric forms of non-fictional nature writing that can also be interpreted as life-nature (autoBIOgraphical) writing. The author discusses the works of Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing (anthropologist), Urszula Zajączkowska (biologist), Helen Macdonald (historian of science) and Jolanta Brach-Czaina (philosopher) in order to show their biopoetical writing strategies: immersion, rhizomatic, assemblage, and tentacularity. In her analysis, the author defines the strategies by using the concepts of Passage – understood in broader terms rather than as a trope of urban writing and reading – and flaneurie, which can be a non-urban experience, that represents the opposite of laboratory. This paper will also discuss the possibilities and the limits of non-anthropocentrism in literature.

Opis:
Relying on post-war biographies of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the article provides an insight into how his life as a writer was modelled through recurring similarities and differences of representation. Both factual and methodological portrayals seem uniform. In 1954 the biographical calendar presented by Julian Krzyżanowski became a point of reference for all following profiles of Sienkiewicz. Moreover, the biographers seem to utilize personal documents in a similar manner – they are to validate their stories. The resulting life writing appears to hold peculiar control over the protagonist’s life, suggesting that special-temporal distance allows us to see more than Sienkiewicz did himself.

The paper deals with a little-known translation of the Vulgate Psalter which was published anonymously in 1700 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye by the printer of the exiled court of King James VII of Scotland and II of England. The paper argues in favour of the originality of the translation in the face of the claim expressed in the literature that it represents a revision of an earlier English rendition made from the Vulgate published in 1610 as part of the Douay-Rheims Bible. The adduced data draw from history, life writing studies and linguistics, thereby offering multidisciplinary evidence in favour of the originality of the rendition.

The author exposes the fundamental dilemmas of the contemporary literary biography. By reminding the words by Czesław Miłosz from his Abecadło presents the essence of the 20th century biography. He also points to the essential transformations within life-writing practices in reference to the newest texts among which one can find ecocritical writing as well as other forms.

This article argues that David Clark’s digital biography 88 Constellations for Wittgenstein (to be played with the Left Hand) (2008) meets all the criteria of a writerly/plural text as defined by Roland Barthes in S/Z (1970). The discussion focuses on the interactive and reversible structure of Clark’s work, as well as on the plurality and hybridity of its components. The experimental form of Wittgenstein’s biography is examined as an attempt to capture the elusiveness and the contradictions of its subject.

Opis:
The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

This article outlines selected shifts in thinking about authorship and authority that have occurred in literary and cultural studies in the aftermath of Roland Barthes’s proclamation of the death of the author, followed by the author’s many revivals. Reconsidering Barthes’s seminal essay and confronting it with Michel Foucault’s query about the author-function, the article comments on Seán Burke’s polemical stance concerning situated authorship. Against these general considerations, several areas in which authorship and authority have been reconceptualized are briefly discussed, referring to the themes addressed in this volume. These areas embrace the problems of representing and using somebody else’s story in visual arts and testimonial theatre, the challenges of individual and cultural situatedness of writing within one’s own output and in reference to more general cultural hauntings as well as the processes of self-formation in the interactions between a variety of texts forming life-writing.

Artykuł porusza rozległy, a przy tym zaskakująco niedoinwestowany temat związków autobiografii i fikcji w okresie między rokiem 1880 a 1930. Jego istotą jest przeformułowanie poglądów na temat relacji między modernizmem i praktykami życiopisania. W tym celu Saunders przywołuje opublikowany w roku 1906 esej Stephena Reynoldsa, autora autobiograficznej książki A Poor Man’s House, w którym pojawia się pojęcie autobiografikcji, zaskakująco podobne do pojęć ze słownika ponowoczesnego. Saunders przygląda się rozumieniu tego terminu w czasach Reynoldsa i dowodzi jego przydatności, niedającej się sprowadzić jedynie do historycznego kontekstu jego powstania.
This essay approaches the large but surprisingly under-theorized topic of the relation between autobiography and fiction, concentrating on the period between 1880 and 1930, arguing for a new account of the relation between Modernism and life-writing. It introduces and analyses a key essay from 1906 by Stephen Reynolds, author of A Poor Man’s House, which, strikingly, coins the post-modern-sounding term ‘autobiografiction’. It argues that Reynolds’ central concept sheds light on the vexed theoretical question of the relation between autobiography and fiction, and in ways that reach further than either Reynolds or the essay’s few commentators have appreciated.

Autor omawia trzy słowniki autobiograficzne (dwa zostały pomyślane jako takie, w trzecim udział haseł związanych z tym obszarem badań jest wyraźny) pochodzące z różnych kręgów językowych i opierające się na odmiennych metodologiach i perspektywach badawczych. Mimo różnic wszystkie trzy, jak przekonuje, dowodzą, z jednej strony, nieustannie rosnącego wpływu perspektywy autobiograficznej zarówno w badaniach nad literaturą, jak i w codziennym doświadczeniu, z drugiej zaś pilnej potrzeby poszerzenia granic pojmowania autobiografizmu, którego dziś już nie sposób zamknąć w kategoriach literackich i literaturoznawczych.
The Author discusses three autobiographical dictionaries (two of them are autobiographical in a strict sense of the term, the third one bares a visibly autobiographical approach), each representing a different language as well as founded on various methodological approaches. According to him despite the differences they all prove the ever growing influence of autobiography on both literature and on our everyday experience. The former – the Author concludes – evidences additionally that viewing autobiography as a uniquely a literary term is far too narrow a category.

Virginia Foster Durr was born in 1903 in Birmingham, Alabama in a former planter class family, and in spite of the gradual decline in the family fortune, she was brought up as a traditional southern belle, utterly subjected to the demands of the ideology of white male supremacy that ruled the Jim Crow South. Thus, she soon learnt that in the South a black woman could not be a lady, and that as a young southern woman she was desperately in need of a husband. It was not until she had fulfilled this duty that she began to open her eyes to the reality of poverty, injustice, discrimination, sexism and racism ensuing from the set of rules she had so easily embraced until then. In Outside the Magic Circle, Durr describes the process that made her aware of the gender discrimination implicit in the patriarchal southern ideology, and how this realization eventually led her to abhor racial segregation and the ideology of white male supremacy. As a consequence, in her memoirs she presents herself as a rebel facing the social ostracism resulting from her determination to fight against gender and racial discrimination in the Jim Crow South. This article delves into Durr’s composed textual self as a rebel, and suggests the existence of a crack in it, rooted in her inability to discern the real effects of white male supremacy on the domestic realm and in her subsequent blindness to the reality behind the mammy stereotype.

W artykule podjęto namysł nad biografiami Freuda autorstwa pierwszych freudystów. Autorka dowodzi, że w pierwszych dekadach XX wieku gatunki z zakresu literatury dokumentu osobistego, takie jak autobiografia czy biografia, były chętnie wykorzystywane przez uczniów i uczennice Sigmunda Freuda, którzy wykorzystali je do ukazania subiektywnej wizji narodzin i rozwoju ruchu psychoanalitycznego. Wybrane biografie Freuda zostały odczytane w świetle napięcia między obiektywizującym językiem biografa a dyskursem autobiograficznym. Autorka pokazuje, że wczesne (auto)biografie Freuda napisane przez jego uczniów ujawniają nieznaną historię rozwoju teorii psychoanalitycznej, w której podkreślono wartość kolektywnych strategii teoretyzowania oraz dynamiki afektywnej wpływającej na funkcjonowanie ruchu psychoanalitycznego.
The article explores the auto/biographical narratives devoted to Freud written by his disciples. The author argues that both biography and autobiography were important life-writing genres used by psychoanalysts in the first half of the twentieth century to express their subjective views on the history of the psychoanalytic movement. The chosen biographies of Freud shed light on the close relationship between “subjective” autobiographical discourse (based on self-observation and auto-analysis) and the “objective” role of a biographer. The author argues that the early auto/biographies of Freud’s disciples presented a different history of psychoanalytic knowledge, where the collective thinking and affective relationships are shown to be crucial in the development of the psychoanalytic movement.
