Opis:
The Gdów “embayment” is the most pronounced deflection along the northern boundary of the Carpathians. It is filled by the sandy clay deposits which used to be named the Skawina Formation or Chodenice beds or, locally, conglomerates (of Sypka Góra). Their stratigraphic position according to studies of foraminifers had been determined as Badenian. New results obtained from micropalaeontological material sampled at three exposures near Wiatowice, Jawczyce (Giewont) and Gdów (Sypka Góra), and based on boreholes, indicate a much younger age of for the deposits infilling the Gdów “embayment”. These studies show that the surface deposits are not older than Late Sarmatian/Pannonian (Serravalian/Tortonian). They also suggest a much later time for the last stages of the thrusting of the Carpathian Mountains over the Carpathian Foredeep.

In the early 20th century, relics of Pleistocene mammals were found near the village of Starunia. Gravity surveys performed in the place of the discovery revealed a low-density bed in the Miocene Vorotyshcha salt-bearing beds. The lowered density resulted from high halite content and probably an increased number of ozokerite veins. The localization of zoological relics can be attributed to the existence of this bed. Surface gravity surveys enabled scientists to determine its course and horizontal range. Gravity surveys also confirmed the existence of the Rinne fault. In the western part of the study area gravity modelling showed an interface between Miocene Vorotyshcha salt-bearing beds and Sloboda Conglomerates, differing in average bulk density. Geologic data indicate that this interface may have the form of an overthust rather than of a fault.

geophysical data
Opis:
The Carpathian Foredeep in Poland is divided into two parts, eastern and western, with different tectonic frameworks and conditions of the Neogene sedimentary fill. The boundary is the so-called Krakow Ridge associated with the contact of two regional tectonic units: Upper Silesian and Malopolska blocks. The width of the Foredeep varies regionally and significantly differs in the western and eastern parts. It was developed within the epi-Variscan platform. Two zones can be distinguished in the Foredeep: the inner (older) zone and the outer zone. The subject of the presented work is the eastern part of the outer zone of Foredeep located in front of the head of the Carpathian thrust and filled mainly by autochthonous Miocene formations. The meridional width of this zone of the basin varies from about 10 km in the vicinity of Krakow to nearly 100 km in the central part. Its tectonic framework is defined from the south and south-west by marginal structures of the Carpathian overthrust and tectonic units of the folded Miocene. From the north-east and north-west, the border is marked by a system of faults in the foreground of Roztocze Upland and the Holy Cross Mountains. In the Sub-Cenozoic basement, a set of large faults of NW-SE length, with different times of formation and activity, is marked. These faults locally define horst structures and tectonic grabens. Some of the faults continue under the Carpathians, under which there is also a system of transversal faults in relation to the main axis of the orogeny. The influence of the tectonic structures of the basement is noticeable within the Miocene cover by faults disappearing towards the surface and continuous deformations of the adaptive type. The outer foreland basin is filled with marine molasse type deposits of the unfolded autochthonous Middle Miocene with a thickness of up to approx. 3.500 m. The complex of Miocene formations is formed, in the lower, south-western and central part, by strongly differentiated submarine fan deposits accompanied by basin plain formations and gravitational flow deposits, including turbidite deposits characteristic of flysch sedimentation. The outer part of the fans smoothly transitions into the zone of fine-clastic sedimentation of the basin plain. Above the complex of submarine fan sediments, there are thick complexes of sediments of deltaic origin, which are also intensively variable facies, creating a set of channel (coarse-grained) and extra-channel (finegrained) facies. The highest, relatively thin part of the sediments is formed by shallow coastal shelf formations. Submarine fans and river deltas developed mainly in the zone of the south-western and southern coasts of the Miocene reservoir, surrounded by river mouths providing an abundant supply of material from the rising and eroded Carpathians. In the north-eastern and locally even in the middle part of the basin, sediments may appear, for which the feeding area was located in the hinterland of the northern and north-eastern coast of the Miocene Sea. The limited scope of extraction of drill cores resulting from the exploratory and exploitation nature of drilling makes it necessary to use borehole and surface geophysical data to reconstruct the depositional architecture. Processing and interpretation of geophysical data for a complex of Miocene sediments with such characteristics are problematic and ambiguous. Numerous sources of sedimentary material supply in the form of river mouths and submarine channels cause a significant diversification of the depositional architecture of the Miocene basin, making it difficult to trace uniform stratigraphic and lithological and facies boundaries. Sedimentary conditions cause, on the one hand, a certain monotony of the sediments, dominated by clastic formations, enriched by evaporate sediments horizons, and on the other hand, great lateral and depth facies differentiation. Geophysical well-logging data allows to recognize the lithological and facies variability of sediments and to determine the sequence of changes along the borehole trajectory. Seismic reflection data was used to track lateral variability. For the seismic reflective method, the reflective boundaries, characterized by a significant, abrupt change in acoustic impedance, are of primary importance. Within the Miocene basin, numerous reflective boundaries with high lateral variability and non-obvious stratigraphic identification are observed. In a complex of siliciclastic deposits, seismic wave reflections are recorded from the boundaries separating fine-grained lithofacies and medium- and coarse-grained facies. Due to the dominance of deltaic sediments and submarine fans in the depositional architecture of the Miocene complex, the regional continuity of such boundaries is problematic, and their unambiguous stratigraphic identification is practically impossible. To sum up, intense lithological and facies variability of clastic deposits, both lateral and vertical, should be expected within the Miocene complex. The sediments of individual fragments of submarine fans and deltas overlap each other, and there may also be overlaps with the sediments of neighboring fans. Such characteristics of the complex translate into a variable seismic pattern with numerous reflective boundaries and intense lateral variability of the seismic signal characteristics

The cave of Smocza Jama located in the centre of Kraków is developed in the Wawel Horst built of Upper Jurassic limestone and surrounded by grabens with Miocene clays. The cave is composed of two series: the old one has been known for ages and the new one was discovered when an artificial shaft was mined in 1974. The new series comprises small chambers separated by intervening thin walls while the old series consists of three connected together spatial chambers. The cave abounds in extensively developed solution cavities – cupolas and ceiling pockets. The internal fine-grained deposits, predominantly representing clay fraction are built of illite, mixed layer illite-smectite, kaolinite and iron oxides. They are probably the residuum after dissolution of Jurassic limestone. The cave originated in phreatic condition due to water input from below. The new series represents juvenile stage of cave evolution. The water rose through fissure-rifts located in chamber bottoms, circulated convectionally within particular chambers, finally led to bleaching of intervening walls, and hence to connection of the neighbouring chambers. The evolution of the old series is far more advanced. The rounded solution cavities imply that the cave was formed by water of elevated temperature. The lack of coarse-grained fluvial deposits, Pleistocene mammal remains and Palaeolithic artefacts prove that the cave was isolated since its inception till Holocene time. The cave originated due to artesian circulation, when the Wawel Horst was covered by imper- meable Miocene clays. A foreland basin with carbonate basement, filled with fine-grained molasse-type deposits seems to be particularly favourable for the development of artesian caves.

Eastern rite churches in the northern areas of the Kingdom of Hungary – historical outline The article provides an overview of the history of Eastern rites in the northern areas of the Kingdom of Hungary, focusing chiefly on the historical-graphic position of Karpatho-Rusyn The lands belonging today to Slovakia and Carpathian Ukraine from the Middle Ages, and the division of Christianity into two branches, were populated by a large group of believers who did not recognize the supremacy of the Roman Church. It was only in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that the power of the popes was recognized in exchange for the preservation of their traditional, religious rites. The text reconstructs the specific societal fate of the region. The article discusses the issues of the colonization of the territory, the history of the local church institutions, the fate of this area of Europe during the times of the Reformation, the establishment of the union between the Orthodox Church and Rome, and finally the era of the emergence of modern nationalisms. This study clarifies the discourse of today’s social and national activists. It reconstructs contemporary narratives and myths and proposes an overview of the creation of the cultural and political amalgam on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains while asking questions concerning the origins of religious syncretism.

Opis:
Despite the increasing technological level of the reflection seismic method, the imaging of fold and thrust belts remains a demanding task, and usually leaves some questions regarding the dips, the shape of the subthrust structures or the most correct approach to velocity model building. There is no straightforward method that can provide structural representation of the near-surface geological boundaries and their velocities. The interpretation of refracted waves frequently remains the only available technique that may be used for this purpose, although one must be aware of its limitations which appear in the complex geological settings. In the presented study, the analysis of velocity values obtained in the shallow part of Carpathian orogenic wedge by means of various geophysical methods was carried out. It revealed the lack of consistency between the results of 3D refraction tomography and both the sonic log and uphole velocities. For that reason, instead of the industry-standard utilization of tomography, a novel, geologically-consistent method of velocity model building is proposed. In the near-surface part, the uphole velocities are assigned to the formations, documented by the surface geologic map. Interpreted time-domain horizons, supplemented by main thrusts, are used to make the velocity field fully-compatible with the litho-stratigraphic units of the Carpathians. The author demonstrates a retrospective overview of seismic data imaging in the area of the Polish Carpathian orogenic wedge and discusses the most recent global innovations in seismic methodology which are the key to successful hydrocarbon exploration in fold and thrust regions.

Opis:
The article presents an attempt to conduct a chemostratigraphic analysis of the different-age rocks that form the Carpathian orogen. First, it was decided to create a synthetic geological profile for sediments occurring in the eastern part of the Polish Carpathians. The samples, mostly sandstones, were sourced from the primary stratigraphic layers in the Skole and Silesian Units, where rocks from the Lower Cretaceous to the Paleocene were identified. Due to the availability of research material, samples with well-documented stratigraphy were chosen from two wells, D-1 and H-1, with a particular focus on their stratigraphic classification. Subsequently, for comparison, a chemostratigraphic profile was generated for the Kuźmina-1 well. The analysis revealed significant disparities in chemical composition among the primary stratigraphic layers, which had been distinguished through paleontological studies in the examined boreholes. This made it possible to establish distinct boundaries between individual stratigraphic layers. The ability to create distinct chemostratigraphic models for the four examined stratigraphic horizons: Upper Cretaceous – Senonian (Inoceramian Beds), Upper Cretaceous/Paleocene (Istebnian Beds), Eocene (Variegated Shales), and Oligocene (Krosno Beds) was also confirmed through the creation of a Herrón classification diagram. The greatest variability of chemostratigraphic characteristics was observed in the Cretaceous formations. Initially, the tests were carried out in an accredited laboratory at ACTLABS, enabling the subsequent evaluation of results obtained using portable spectrometers (pXRF Titan, covering a measurement range from Mg to U, and pXRF Tracer, capable of also measuring Na content, both manufactured by Bruker). It was confirmed that clear variations in the content of individual elements were discernible for both major and trace elements. The most diagnostic elements include Na, Mg, Fe, K, Ca, and also Si, although the variability range is slightly narrower for the latter element. As for trace elements, these comprise S, P, Mn, Ti, Sr, Zr, Ba, Rb, and Zn, which can also be analyzed using portable pXRF spectrometers. A comparison between the chemical composition results obtained with the portable pXRF spectrometer and those from the ACTLABS laboratory revealed the feasibility of using pXRF measurements on a larger scale. For most diagnostic elements, sufficiently precise results were obtained using pXRF.

Two-dimensional diagrams of the first and second pressure restoration curves in the semi-logarithm coordinate system were taken into account. The determined linear regression equations of these sections give simultaneously the extrapolated value of the reservoir pressure and the directional coefficient. The “logarithmic approximation” method used in hydrogeology was used to determine the radius of the perimeter zone with altered permeability of the water-bearing rocks of the Mesozoic.

Geological setting and precipitation triggers seem to be obvious parameters controlling landslides, but their relation to individual sliding processes has not been clear. We take on interdisciplinary approach (combining Earth science methods with an engineer ing-geotechnical approach) to examine sliding processes in the Kawiory landslide in the Polish Carpathians. Field parameters were obtained from inclinometer monitoring, meteorological records, piezometer data and geomechanical tests. Numerical simulation of the landslide development was performed, both for the reconstruction of the internal deformation phenomena on the slope and for approximate prediction of its future behaviour. An empirical formula describing the relationship between the depth of groundwater level (GWL) and precipitation is presented. The case study showed that for the ob served quasi-continuous creep, the depth and in particular the intensity of GWL fluctuations might be crucial.

Alabaster is a rock with low hardness, high coherence, fine-crystalline development and forms an optically “warm” surface when polished. It has been used as a sculpting, decorative and architectonic stone, often by civilizations of the Mediterranean Sea Basin. Alabaster in the architecture and sculpture of Kraków is mainly from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) and comes from deposits within the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin, chiefly along its northern margin in the “Podolia rim”. It was quarried around the mid-part of the Dnister River and its tributaries, from Lviv (Lwów) to Khotyn (Chocim), and mostly at Zhuravno (Żurawno). The alabaster quarried here was called Ruthenian, Polish, or Lvov “marble”. Small quarries were also located at the front of the Carpathian overthrust, including the known deposit at Łopuszka Wielka. The Miocene alabaster has shades of white, yellow, green, brown, usually with differing spots or veins; often the rock is brecciated and partly semi-transparent. Alabaster has been quarried in the Polish Republic since the 16th century, peaking (also in finished stone products) between the world wars. The authors present examples of alabaster usage in ecclesiastical edifices of Kraków, for instance in the Wawel Cathedral, St. Mary’s Church, the churches of Dominican, Carmelite and Missionary clergy, and also in some secular buildings, e.g. the Jagiellonian Library.

Opis:
The region between the Wieliczka Foothills and the Beskid Makowski Mts. has yielded new data on the accumulation of loess-like deposits during the Vistulian Glaciation. The grain-size distibution and the heavy mineral composition, particularly the significant presence of amphiboles, indicates on aeolian origin for these silty deposits. The silt was most probably derived from glaciofluvial deposits in the Carpathian forelands. Among the Quaternary deposits which accumulated during the Vistulian Glaciation and Holocene, three horizons of loess-like deposits (correlated with the lower, middle and upper younger loesses of the Lublin Upland), three horizons of solifluction deposits, and three horizons of deluvial deposits were distinguished. The accumulation of seven alluvial successions in the Raba and Harbutówka River valleys encompasses a large part of the Quaternary - from the South Polish Glaciations (terraces VII and VI) up to the Holocene (terraces II and I). The lithostratigraphy of the slope deposits (solifluctional and deluvial) and loess-like deposits has been estabilished mainly on the basis of 14C dates of the palaeosol horizons. One of these dates, combined with palynological analysis, confirmed the existence of a warmer period in the Denekamp Interstadial (31 200 +/- 1000 years BP in the Harbutowice-1 section). The dates obtained fromthe Jastrzębia-1 (20 760 +/- 300 years BP) and Polanka-1 (20 980 +/- 310 years BP and 14 510 +/- 150 years BP) sections point to periods favouring the development of soils in the younger and terminal parts of the Younger Pleniglacial. These results, consistent with the dates obtained by other investigators, point to the existence of a warmer period (between 24-20 ka BP) in southern Poland during the maximum development of the ice sheet (Main Stadial) during the last glaciation in northern Poland.

Opis:
The facies variation of the Badenian sulphate deposits in the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin reflects distinct depositional and diagenetic environments. In these environments the primary sulphate (mainly gypsum) was deposited and then underwent different pathways of diagenetic evolution, recognized on the basis of sedimentological, petrographic and geochemical studies. Diagenetic sulphate facies (anhydrite and secondary gypsum) formed in successive stages: syndepositional (the depositional stage), early diagenetic (at the surface and during shallow burial) and late diagenetic (during deeper burial and exhumation). Most anhydrite deposits show sedimentological and petrographic features characteristic of a diagenetic facies formed by replacement (anhydritization) of the precursor gypsum deposits. Four basic genetic models of anhydrite have been proposed: (1) syndepositional interstitial anhydrite growth de novo, (2) syndepositional anhydritization (via nodule formation and pseudomorphous replacement), (3) early diagenetic anhydritization (displacive anhydrite growth), and (4) late diagenetic anhydritization (replacive anhydrite growth). The succession of diagenetic processes and their paragenetic relationships within the Badenian sulphate deposits display a complex diagenetic evolution. Many controlling factors, such as a palaeogeographic setting, tectonic activity, geostructural constraints and physico-chemical changes of the pore fluids, related to sedimentary and diagenetic environments, have been involved in the sulphate diagenesis. The results may be applied to other ancient evaporite basins including the marginal gypsum deposits and anhydrite in the more buried, basinward part.

Opis:
The study is focused on the taxonomic inventory of an intriguing bivalve fauna from the Lower Oligocene Menilite Beds (Dynów Marls) within the Silesian Nappe, Polish Outer Carpathians. Sixteen bivalve species have been identified within the material collected in two small quarries in Jabłonica Polska near Krosno. Stratigraphic and geographic distributions of all recognized species are considered. This assemblage, the first of this kind in Poland and one of three recognized in the Outer Carpathians, shows clear affinities to coeval typical Solenovian faunas from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, with particular comparison made to bivalve faunas from the Menilite Formation (Subchert Member) within the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe, Ukrainian Outer Carpathians. Moreover, this study presents an overview of the main aspects and definitions of the date of the Paratethys origin. The main criterion used to define the time of the Paratethys birth is the distinct faunal turnover from the moderately diverse boreal or Tethyan bivalve faunas populating particular basins of the Northern Peri-Tethys in the earliest Oligocene to the uniform, highly endemic fauna inhabiting the newly formed semi-closed basin. This vast inland sea, named Paratethys, was populated by representatives of eight euryhaline bivalve families. They are characterized by extinct Paratethyan genera, such as Bessia Kojumdgieva et Sapungieva, Merklinicardium Popov, Korobkoviella Merklin, Urbnisia Goncharova, Ergenica G. Popov and Janschinella Merklin.

In Quaternary sediments filling the Velyky Lukavets River valley, at the abandoned ozokerite mine (= Ropyshche) in Starunia, perfectly preserved carcasses of large mammals were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. The study area includes a fragment of the valley between Molotkiv and Starunia, and its close vicinity. The area belongs to several morphostructural and geomorphic units of the Outer Eastern Carpathians and the Carpathian Foreland. The asymmetric, subsequent valley is a part of the Mizhbystrytska Upland, where flattened ridges and flat bulges represent fragments of planation surfaces: the upper (the Krasna level), elevated 170 m above the valley bottom and linked with the Late Pliocene, and the lower one (the Loyova level), rising at 100 m and linked with the Eopleistocene. Several flat surfaces are visible on valley slopes, probably representing river terraces formed before the Late Pleistocene. The valley attained its maximum depth during the Eemian Interglacial (OIS 5e). In the Ropyshche area, probably three terrace steps built of Weichselian and Holocene sediments (OIS 5d - 1) were developed, but their top surfaces are almost completely destroyed by mining operations. The recent, meandering river bed follows the zones of decreased cohesiveness of rocks resulting from mining activity and is becoming somewhat deepened during inundations. The transported material is mostly coarse-clastic one. The two latter factors may suggest that the river is underloaded due to declining agriculture and decreasing intensity of outwash. The top surface of the sub-Quaternary basement is deformed by subsidence and collapse of mine workings, but the relief of valley bottom allows for further exploration for remnants of large mammals not only in the Ropyscche area but along the whole studied segment of the valley, as well.

Chemical composition of the brines of primary fluid inclusions in sedimentary halite (from the boreholes: P-2, P-3, P-6, P-7 and P-8) of the Badenian evaporite of the Zbudza Fm. from East Slovakian basin indicates that the basinal brines belong to the Na-K-Mg-Cl-SO4 type. The ratios of K+, Mg2+, and SO42- ions are practically the same as they were in the Badenian seawater. Taking into account the information on the chemical evolution of seawater in the Phanerozoic (Kovalevich et al., 1998) and the calculations of this evolution for the Cenozoic (Zimmermann, 2000) it is suggested that the Badenian seawater was characterized by the reduced contents of Mg (by approximately 20%) and SO42- (by approximately 40%) in comparison with the recent seawater. The postsedimentary recrystallization of salts occurred under the effect of buried brines, which inherited their composition from the primary basinal brines. The intensive recrystallization of salts occurred during the tectonic movements.

Soil degradation is caused by geological, climatic and biological factors, as well as human activities. One kind of degradation involves loss of soil biodiversity as a result of global environmental changes. A study on earthworms was carried out near Ustrzyki Górne in the Bieszczady Mts (Poland), on a monthly basis, in 1986–1987 and 2009–2010 at various sites within the Carpathian beech forests (Fagetum carpaticum). During the years 1986–1987, a total of 13 species of earthworms were found: 6 species on site I, 8 species on site II, and 9 species were recorded within the site III. The highest abundance, i.e. 11 species was found on site IV. The study, which revisited the same locations in 2009–2010, identified only 10 species. In sites I, II and III, 7 earthworm species were found in each, and in site IV –10 species. The authors also investigated the factors endangering the fauna of earthworms in the Bieszczady Mountains, and following the example set by other countries which had made attempts to introduce earthworms into the red lists of the threatened species, it was proposed that such a procedure should be adopted for the endemic species O. transpadanus. It was also observed that specimens of L. terrestris had penetrated the natural areas of the National Park.

The sub-Quaternary topography of the western Sandomierz Basin has been compared to variable thicknesses of Quaternary sediments and geomorphology of the area. The lithology and age of the top of Miocene strata have been determined. The Witów Series has been interpreted as a sequence of a braided river that used to flow into the retreating marine basin, forming a fan delta whose age, according to macrofloristic determinations, has been assigned to the Late Miocene. Lower Quaternary gravels cap the remnants of a planated surface situated at 240-250 m a.s.l. The Błonie gravel horizon occurring at a similar altitude was deposited by a river active in Narevian and/or Nidanian glacial stages, and its top underwent reworking during the Sanian-2 stage. Deposits infilling the fossil sub-Carpathian Furrow have been mapped and dated to the Cromerian s.l. interglacial stage. The final alluviation of this segment of the furrow took place during the Sanian-2 stage. Reconstruction of the drainage pattern during the Eopleistocene, South-Polish glaciations, and Masovian inter- glacial stage has been proposed as well.

The article, based on archival and published documents, attempts to highlight the international situation of the Czechoslovak Republic and Transcarpathia on the eve of World War II. It proves that Hungary, throughout the interwar period, pursued an aggressive irredentist policy aimed at destabilizing Czechoslovakia and returning “its original territories”. This revanchist activity culminated in 1938-1939, when the Hungarian government sent diversion groups to Carpathian Ukraine, trying to destabilize the domestic political situation in the region. A similar subversive operation was carried out by Poland, which sought to establish a common Hungarian-Polish border by completely eliminating Czechoslovakia. The authors argue that a “hybrid war” was waged against young Carpathian Ukraine and in mid-March 1939 it escalated into open intervention and occupation of the entire territory of the region. A. Voloshyn’s government together with the Czechoslovak troops made a lot of efforts to protect the settlements of Carpathian Ukraine from the destructive actions of enemy saboteurs. The formed divisions of the Carpathian Sich and the Ukrainian gendarmerie were involved in the defense of the borders. Some parallels can be drawn with the events of 2014 in Ukraine, when Russian troops annexed Crimea and occupied part of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In 1938-1939, the governments of Hungary and Poland assured the world community that their troops did not exist in Transcarpathia. Similar is the position of the leadership of the Russian Federation concerning the events of 2014-2021 in Ukraine

During the construction of a section of the S-7 Lubień – Rabka-Zdrój dual expressway, located in the area of the Carpathian flysch (Carpathian Flysch Belt, South Poland), damage to the embankment was observed, as well as cracks and depressions in the new pavement. An analysis of the geological and engineering conditions in the area of the road section under construction showed the existence of a complex tectonic structure of the flysch formations, a shallow groundwater table, and numerous landslides. In order to stabilize the road substrate, it was decided to carry out injections, and the locations of these injections were initially geotechnically tested. However, due to the high variability of the geological structure, the target method employed was electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), which performed the survey in two stages. In Stage I, the geoelectrical/geochemical structure of the near-surface zone was identified, and the probable causes of road damage were indicated. This stage was completed by performing the stabilization and sealing process of the ground with an injection mixture. In Stage II, studies were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the injection process. The ERT method effectively identified the shallow geological structure and, in particular, delineated the zone of strong fractures in the flysch and areas associated with faults. Using the electrical resistivity tomography method, it was also possible to determine the injection mixture’s approximate penetration depth and the loosening zone’s degree of filling.

Petrographic research was carried out on 549 thin sections representing Carpathian sandstones of the Lower Cretaceous to Miocene sediments from the Silesian and Skole units (east of Gorlice town). They represented the Lgota, Spass, Inoceramian, Stryj, Istebna, Jamna, Ciężkowice, Menilite, Polanica, Boryslav, Kliwa, and Krosno sandstones. The first goal of the study was to determine the composition of rockframework as well as the types, quantities and distribution of cements. The granulometric composition of sandstones is very diversified, varying from very fine-grained (similar to mudstones) to fine-grained or coarse-grained sandstones. Sorting of detrital grains is rather poor. Only fine-grained sandstones exhibit the better sorting. The investigated rocks can be described as arenites and wackes, sublitharenites, lithoarenites, subarkoses and arkoses. In the next step of research, analyses of diagenetic processes and their influence on the change ofporosity were also carried out. Results of the study of rock framework composition and the type and amount of cements allowed me to compare similarities and differences of the Carpathian sandstones from various lithostratigraphic units.

Opis:
Analysis of previously available stratigraphic data coupled with the re-interpretation of seismic profiles calibrated by boreholes has allowed the construction of a new tectonic model of evolution of the Gdów “embayment” – a tectonic re-entrant located along the Carpathian front east of Kraków (southern Poland). This model shows that the main phase of localized fault-controlled subsidence took place in the Early Badenian and was associated with deposition of the locally overthickened Skawina Formation. Also, deposition of evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation seems to have been tectonically controlled by local basement faulting. Supra-evaporitic siliciclastic deposits have developed as a result of overall north-directed sediment progradation from the eroded Carpathian belt towards the Carpathian Foredeep. During the final stages of development of the Carpathian fold-and-thrust wedge the previously subsiding Gdów “embayment” area was uplifted and basement faults were reactivated either as reverse faults or as low angle thrust faults. Along the leading edge of this inverted structure a triangle zone developed, with backthrusting along the evaporitic level. As a result, overthickened evaporites, formed in local tectonically-controlled depressions within the area of the Gdów “embayment” area have been strongly folded and internally deformed.

The Badenian/Sarmatian boundary in the Central Paratethys has been traditionally identified by the faunal turnover recording an important environmental change possibly controlled by the change from marine to brackish conditions. The strata below the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary in the northern Carpathian Foredeep are included into the Pecten beds, and those above it into the Syndesmya beds. Foraminiferal study of the Babczyn 2 borehole which is one of the crucial sections in the northern Carpathian Foredeep, well-known for the depositional age of rhyolite tuff within the Pecten beds dated by Śliwiński et al. (2012) at 13.06 ±0.11 Ma, indicated that in fact the boundary occurs within the Syndesmya beds. This conclusion is based upon the rapid change from a stenohaline foraminiferal fauna to a euryhaline one, and the appearance of the species Anomalinoides dividens, the taxon regarded as the marker for the Sarmatian. In the Babczyn 2 and Cieszanów 1 (located ~2.5 km basinward of Babczyn 2) boreholes, Anomalinoides dividens appears 3.1–3.8 m above the replacement of stenohaline by euryhaline foraminifers. The calcareous nannoplankton study shows that the upper Badenian and the lower Sarmatian strata in the studied sections represent the NN6, undivided NN6-NN7, and NN7 zones.

Geochemical characteristics of 25 oils collected from Skiba Unit of the Outer Carpathians, Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit of the Carpathian Foredeep and their Mesozoic basement in the western Ukraine are presented in the paper. The first recognised oil family consists of almost all oils accumulated in the flysch sequence of the Outer Carpathians and the Carpathian Foredeep which have very similar geochemical characteristics. These oils were generated from Type II or II/III kerogen deposited in clastic sediments. They are low-sulphur and migrated short distances. Slight biodegradation processes are visible only in oils accumulated in shallow deposits in the Skiba Unit. Their source rocks are the Oligocene Menilite Shales from the Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit. Oils from the Kokhanivka and Orkhovychi deposits (the Mesozoic basement of the Carpathian Foredeep) constitute the second family. These oils are extremely heavy, high-sulphur and were generated from high-sulphur Type IIS kerogen deposited in the carbonate environment. The most probable source rocks for these oils are the Upper Jurassic strata. Oil collected from the Vola Blazhivska deposit (the Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit) shows intermediate parameters between the oil families described above. It is characterized by the presence of oleanane and high sulphur content. It was generated from the Menilite Shales containing high-sulphur kerogen. All oils were generated at an early stage or the peak of oil window.

Multiproxy sedimentological, gamma-spectrometric, foraminiferal, calcareous nannoplankton, and otolith data were used for the reconstruction of the Badenian (Middle Miocene) history of the Moravian part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Distal parts of the Carpathian Foredeep (a forebulge depozone) are exposed in this succession. Generally, a quiet environment of outer shelf to upper bathyal of monotonous clayey silts was interpreted, which is typical for the proximal parts of a peripheral foreland basin. The section studied can be subdivided into six intervals, confirming the cyclical character of Middle Miocene sedimentation in the Central Paratethys. Interannual oscillations of nutrient content, temperature and/or salinity are interpreted based on the oscillations of geochemical as well as palaeobiological data. The turnover connected with the initiation of the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition is recorded above the LO (last occurrence) of Helicosphaera waltrans in agreement with previous observations in the Carpathian Foredeep. The changes include cooling, a decrease in nutrients, a probable increase of the salinity of surface water, and increase of seasonality. Seasonality was manifested by an alternation of mixed and stratified water columns with a seasonal input of nutrients. Concerning nutrients, sources of seasonal riverine input or seasonal upwelling are both possible.

Romania has a long history of hydrocarbon production and tens of thousands of boreholes have penetrated Miocene strata. Many well cores or cuttings have been either lost or damaged, but lab reports containing valuable petrographic, paleontological and structural data are still available. Most of the knowledge of the subsurface relies on old descriptions and interpretations used by the oil industry. These data have not been recently updated, while research results from the last decade suggest potential changes in stratigraphy, especially for the lower to middle Miocene succession. In order to update, calibrate, and reduce uncertainties regarding the subsurface stratigraphic record, we have reviewed the lab reports and used equivalent field samples for an updated interpretation of the lower to middle Miocene succession. Core and cutting descriptions from boreholes covering an area of ~10,000 km2 in the Diapir Fold Zone of the Eastern Carpathians have been selected and biostratigraphically re-evaluated based on microfossils and calcareous nannofossils. In many cases, highly uncertain ages were previously interpreted as Oligocene and early Miocene. Our recent data suggest that most of the lower Miocene is either difficult to determine or has been reinterpreted as middle Miocene (e.g., Cornu and Doftana formations). This significant change in ages requires an updated model for the timing of regional structural evolution and may open new exploration opportunities in this highly mature hydrocarbon area. This study demonstrates the need for a new complete and reliable stratigraphic framework for the whole Miocene stratigraphic record of the Eastern Carpathians.

Opis:
The studied corals have been collected from cores of boreholes located in the central part of the Polish Carpathian Foreland in the Dąbrowa Tarnowska–Szczucin area. The Jurassic complex in this area presents a continuous stratigraphic section from the Upper Callovian to Tithonian, locally passing to the Lower Cretaceous (Berriasian). Its thickness exceeds 1,100 m in this area. This complex is composed of marine, mainly shallow-water deposits. The corals occur within the upper part of the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) deposits, almost entirely within the Swarzów Limestone Formation (= coral-algal limestone formation). This occurrence marks the northernmost extent of Tithonian shallow-water corals in Poland and one of the northernmost in Europe. 42 coral species (among them 14 in open nomenclature) were identified in deposits of this formation. They include two new species: Complexastrea magna and Complexastrea dabroviensis. All taxa, except one, belong to the order Scleractinia. The described assemblage displays a Late Jurassic character. The broader stratigraphic span is assigned to some species, which are quoted from the Middle Jurassic and some species lasted until the Early Cretaceous, Berriasian and/or Valanginian.

Opis:
The lower-middle Upper Triassic succession of the Fatricum domain from the Tatra Mts is commonly called the Carpathian Keuper. During Late Triassic, the Fatricum Basin was a proximal part of the central Inner Carpathian Basin. In early Carnian times, carbonate sedimentation stopped. Emersion of the Middle Triassic carbonate platform resulted in development of palaeokarst and pedogenic fabrics and deposition of conglomerates. Typical Carpathian Keuper sediments – variegated shales with intercalations of sandstones and dolomites represent mixed continental/shallow marine environments. Variegated mudstones with pedogenic carbonate concretions and intercalations of thin sandstone beds originated in mudflat environment under the semi-arid climate condition. Thick-bedded, cross-stratified sandstones with common plant debris represent fluvial deposits. They were deposited during the periods of climate pluvialisation. According to ?13C and ?18O data, thick, continuous dolomitic sediments containing local cherts represent marine sediments of perilittoral environments, which were commonly emerged as evidenced by common palaeokarst and palaeosols featuring these complexes. Cyclicity in the lower part of the Carpathian Keuper resulted from climatic changes, whereas dolomite-clastic cycles from the upper part of the succession were generated probably by sea level fluctuations. Moreover, deposition of the Keuper succession was controlled by synsedimentary tectonic which resulted in big facies variability.

Results of a microgravity survey performed in the abandoned Starunia ozokerite mine (Carpathian region, Ukraine), where in the early 20th century well preserved remains of large, extinct mammals were found, are discussed in the paper. A number of gravity anomalies indicating the geological heterogeneity at the sub-Quaternary strata have been observed. The assumed measurement observations also enabled the authors to interpret the results in view of density changes in the Quaternary strata. Most of the registered microanomalies coincide with the high-halite and ozokeritic Miocene salt-bearing Vorotyshcha beds. The distribution of the microanomalies reveals neither their correlation with the thickness of overburdens, nor any gravity impact of numerous abandoned wells. Gravity anomalies were mostly connected with the lithology of sediments and rocks obtained from geological boreholes drilled in the years 2007 and 2008, on the basis of which the anomalies' origin could be determined. A concentric, relatively negative gravity microanomaly of ca. 25 m in diameter was registered in the place, where very well preserved relics of the woolly rhinoceros had been found. They may be indicative of the existence of Pleistocene lakes (and/or palaeoswamps), into which the woolly rhinoceroses had sunk. Hence, an assumption can be made that the further search for successive zoological relics can be made in areas with similar anomalies under the low-density sub-Quaternary subcrop.

This paper documents the presence of Eocene marine strata in the Carpathian Foredeep area in Poland. Assemblages of marine dinoflagellate cysts have been found in sands penetrated by the Łukowa-4 borehole below the Miocene succession of the foredeep. Their age is interpreted as Late Eocene. The presence of marine strata of this age in this area sheds new light on the palaeogeography of the Carpathian foreland during the Late Eocene. The dinoflagellate cysts described are compared with coeval Carpathian and epicontinental assemblages; possible connections between these two basins are discussed. Phytogenetic deposits that occur above the marine sands of the Łukowa-4 borehole contain freshwater palynomorphs, indicating their swamp and lacustrine origins. The overlying sand contains impoverished dinoflagellate cyst assemblages; their age is discussed.

Opis:
Salt deposits in the Wieliczka area (Wieliczka Salt Deposit – WSD) in southern Poland comprise salt-rich strata belonging to an evaporite succession that originated in the Carpathian Foredeep basin in the Middle Miocene Badenian (Serravallian) times, ca 13.81–13.45 Ma. Although they have been mined since the 13th century and decades of investigations provided abundant data on their origin and structure, some aspects of their geological evolution are still not fully understood. This study presents current concepts on the lithostratigraphy and tectonics of the WSD. The salt-bearing facies developed near to the southern basin margin, delineated by the Carpathian orogenic front. Such a location triggered the redeposition of sediments and gravity-driven deformation followed by tectonic deformation related to the forelandward advancement of the Carpathian thrusts. As a result, the WSD consists of folds and slices composed of two main salt members: (1) the stratified salt member, with intercalating salt, sulphates and siliciclastics, and (2) the boulder salt member, built of clays with large, isolated blocks of salt. The stratified member contains abundant meso-scale tectonic structures recording the soft-sediment deformation and deformation related to the northward tectonic push exerted by the advancing Carpathian thrust wedge. The boulder member originated due to the syntectonic erosion of evaporites along the basin margins and their redeposition during progressive northward migration of the Carpathian front. Recent interpretations of seismic data imply that the WSD constitutes the core of a triangle zone developed at the contact of the Carpathian orogenic wedge with the backthrust-displaced foredeep sedimentary fill. Meso-scale examples of sedimentary and tectonic structures in the salt-bearing succession exposed in the underground Wieliczka Salt Mine are described and their formation modes discussed.

Opis:
Eutrophication processes occurring in the Carpathian dam reservoirs (southern Poland) have resulted in a drastic increase of incidences of decrease of pH and oxygen content in near-bottom water, which may affect metal remobilization from the sediment. The study is aimed to determine the buffer capacity and effects of decreasing pH on the remobilization of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe) from sediments of the Dobczycki Reservoir (DR), the Czorsztyński Reservoir (CR), and the Rożnowski Reservoir (RR), the right side tributary of the Vistula River. Buffering capacity and the leaching of heavy metals from sediments accompanied with an increase in acidity were analyzed in 0.00-0.24 M HNO3 solutions. Studied sediments had a high buffer capacity. Buffer capacity of sediments at studied sites of the DR and CR was different due to differences in the composition of sediments. The reservoir sediments had a variable ability to release heavy metals with increasing acidity. At pH ~5 and pH ~3, a considerable leaching of Mn (up to 60% and 85% of the total amount, respectively), Cd (up to 35% and 56% respectively), Pb (up to 25% and 39%), the lower leaching of Cu (up to 18% and 30%) and Zn (up to 14% and 20%), and the lowest leaching of Fe (below 5%) were found. The decrease of pH of the water-sediment system caused by eutrophication processes may affect the mobilization of certain heavy metals (mainly Mn, Cd and Pb) from sediment into the water column of the studied Carpathian reservoirs.

The paper focuses on two pressure tunnels in the design of “Katy-Myscowa” water reservoir. One of them serves as a discharge conduit, whereas the other plays an energetic role. Their depths range between 0 and 75 metres and their diameters equal 5 m. Tunnels are located in the rock mass of Carpathian flysch which is anisotropic and heterogeneous, composed of layers of sandstone and clay shales and intersected with interbedding fissures and numerous joints. The paper is divided in two parts. The first part focuses on methods of excavating and supporting, as well as injecting and sealing (i.e. waterproofing) the tunnel. In the second part, a numerical analysis using the FLAC2D code based on the finite difference method was carried for calculating displacements and internal forces in the preliminary support and in permanent lining. Results of the analysis allow for the assessment of conditions in the tunnel during its excavation and exploitation stages.

Study of foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and palynofacies occurring in 2 m-thick marls cropping out beneath a giant gypsum intergrowth unit in the Borków gypsum quarry in Southern Poland, one of the key Badenian evaporite sections in the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin, has shown the presence of 49 species of benthic foraminifers and 11 species of planktonic ones, and 51 dinoflagellate (including 8 redeposited ones). The composition of the foraminiferal fauna and its isotopic signal indicate temperature-stratified, nutrient-rich and thus less-oxygenated marine water. Changes in the relative abundance of epifaunal and infaunal species indicate a clear environmental change during the deposition of the marls. A middle to outer shelf marine, well-ventilated environment with moderate primary productivity existed during the deposition of the bottom part of the marls. Subsequently, infaunal bottom-dwellers became dominant due to a massive increase in food supply to the sea bottom and shallowing of the sea to inner - middle shelf depths, and than a decreasing trend of a relative abundance of the infaunal morphogroups is observed until the top of the marls that were deposited in an inner shelf environment with moderate primary productivity. The calculated palaeotemperatures for particular foraminifer taxa (Globigerina spp., Cibicidoides and Bulimina elongata) show a slight upsection decrease and a decrease in the temperature differences between the bottom and intermediate water beds. Palynofacies are composed of elements of mixed origin, including terrestrial, marine (mainly dinoflagellate cysts) and elements of uncertain derivation (structureless organic matter). The palynological content of most samples indicates their deposition in an open-marine marine environment, in the stable marine conditions of an open shelf basin with no salinity fluctuations. The sample just below the gypsum contains no dinoflagellate cysts, perhaps due to a drastic change in the photic zone leading to a complete collapse of the dinoflagellate flora. Very rare occurrence of planktonic foraminifers in that sample suggest the shallowing of the basin accompanied by a decrease in the temperature gradient between the upper (warmer) and lower (colder) water beds. A shallow, cold water marine environment is indicated for the topmost foraminiferal assemblage.

A rich assemblage of microfossils, including foraminifera, ostracodes and bolboforms (calcareous phytoplankton) have been found in the supra-evaporitic deposits of the Pecten Beds (Upper Badenian) and Krakowiec Clays (Sarmatian) of Middle-Miocene age, which occur in the Jamnica S-119 borehole near Tarnobrzeg, in the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Environmental conditions have been deduced from these microfossils. Comparison with other parts of the Carpathian Foredeep shows that microfauna distribution depended on location within the sedimentary basin and on hydrological conditions. Poorly-diversified and specific microfossils were associated with evaporites and overlying sediments (particularly within the lower Pecten Beds and Krakowiec Clays), indicating poorly-oxygenated near-bottom waters. Possibly, "Upper-Badenian" and "Sarmatian" biofacies had already differentiated by the end of the Badenian. Distribution of the Upper Badenian microfauna and bolboforms in the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep and beyond shows that there was faunal exchange between the eastern and western parts of the Polish section of the Carpathian Foredeep, and indicates connection between the Central Paratethys and Mediterranean basin areas.

Opis:
The fourth century saw the beginning of spreading Christianity among Germanic people. The mission of bishop Ulfi las, however, ended in 348 and persecuted Christian Goths fl ed to the territory of the Roman Empire. After the destruction of Gothic kingdoms, the fl eeing Goths were allowed by the Roman emperor Valens to cross the Danube, probably only on condition that they would adopt new faith. Since the emperor himself was an Arian and Arianism preferred theological teaching in the Roman Empire, the Goths, and later other East Germanic tribes, adopted this doctrine instead of Nicene Creed. Germanic people learned only the basic principles of faith and then just continued with their beliefs. Moreover, Jesus was deemed not the only God, but one of many gods. The second part of the study offers a survey of written sources on the Christianity among Germanic tribes in the Carpathian Basin in the sixth century – Rugians, Heruls, Gepids and Lombards. The Rugians led by the king Feletheus (Feva) and his Arian wife Giso dwelt on the left bank of the Danube, opposite the Roman province of Noricum, where at that time St. Severinus preached Christianity, established monasteries, organised defence or evacuation, redeemed captives, procured corn for the starving and healed the sick. Humble and pious Severinus won himself such a reputation that even barbarian kings respected him and listened to his advice and prophecies. The neighbouring Heruls, however, were pagans and sometimes invaded barely defended provinces of Noricum and Pannonia. Though their king received baptism in 528, many of them remained pagans and, according to Procopius, they were the wickedest people in the whole world. The Gepids, like Goths, converted to Arianism. The most signifi cant traces of Gepid Christianity are found in the territory of Pannonia II, especially near the Roman town of Sirmium. Sirmium was one of the most important centres of early Christianity and in the late sixth century, the town having become a seat of Gepid Arian bishop. On the other hand, Lombard Arianism is very problematical. The fi rst mention of their orthodox faith comes from Procopius. Paganism, however, was retained not only by the majority of the tribe, but also by the king and his retinue, even at the time 568 invasion in Italy. Arianism among Lombards probably gained strength only in Italy, where a number of subjugated Gepids accompanied them and where remnants of Arian Goths continued to live. From Alboin to Aripert (altogether 9 rulers) only two kings are mentioned as Arians and only two as Catholics. Though these Germanic tribes adopted Christianity in the Carpathian Basin, they did not stay there long enough to become true Christians. With Slavs and Avars replacing them, the Christianisation of Central Europe had to start from scratch.

Analysis of microfossil distribution (foraminifera, ostracodes and bolboforms) in evaporite-bearing deposits from the Działoszyce Trough (northern Carpathian Foredeep) has allowed the distinction of three ecozones: the Globigerinoides ecozone (Lower Badenian), the Globigerina ecozone (Middle and Upper Badenian) including an evaporitic horizon, and the Anomalinoides dividens ecozone (Sarmatian). These ecozones are of ecostratigraphical significance and reflect major sea-level changes. The highest stands of sea-level correspond with the Globigerinoides ecozone and the upper part of the Globigerina ecozone, above the evaporites, and they are considered to relate to an influx of oceanic waters. Drastic climatic changes (cooling) and a sea-level fall that weakened bottom water circulation at the boundary between the Globigerinoides and Globigerina ecozones are considered the major factors which accounted for hypoxia (an oxygen-poor environment) that accompanied evaporitic deposition. The appearance of a specific ostracod assemblage (Xylocythere carpathica Szczechura and ?Microxestoleberis sp.) in Upper Badenian deposits is linked with the occurrence of active submarine hydrocarbon seepages.

Opis:
The Badenian section of Anadoly near Kamyanets Podilskyy (Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin) consists of the Tyras Fm. (gypsum and Ratyn Limestone) and the Ternopil Mb. of the Kosiv Fm. The latter are 5.3 m thick and are composed of dark grey mudstones with limestone intercalations. This study indicates the occurrence of over 54 species of benthic foraminifers and 10 species of planktonics. Benthic foraminifera are represented mainly by calcareous forms; agglutinated tests are very rare. Planktonic foraminifera appear in the upper part of the succession studied. Five benthic foraminiferal assemblages are recognized: A (Elphidium/Lobatula/Astrononion) B (Hauerinidae), C (Cibicidoides/Lobatula), D (Porosononion) and E (Uvigerina/Bulimina). The foraminiferal record indicates deposition in a shallow subtidal environment (20 m depth) of normal marine salinity and temperate waters followed by gradual deepening of the basin to >50 m. Analysis of foraminiferal assemblages indicates that bottom waters were highly oxygenated during deposition of the lower and middle parts of the Anadoly sequence. During deposition of the upper part of the sequence the oxygenation of bottom water gradually decreased, as expressed by a large decrease in the proportion of oxic species and an increase in dysoxic ones. The same set of samples yielded low amounts of palynological organic matter represented by dominant black opaque phytoclasts; bisaccate pollen grains and dinoflagellate cysts are rare. Taxonomically impoverished assemblages of the latter consist of dominant Polysphaeridium and Cleistosphaeridium placacanthum associated with Lingulodinium machaerophorum and a few other taxa. The taxonomically richest assemblage was found in the topmost sample. These changes were interpreted as indicative for increased salinity in the surface water layer, with its maximum in the middle part of the section; the assemblage from the topmost part is characteristic for normal marine salinity.

Ten new determinations of the stable sulphur isotope content of anhydrite from Badenian rock salt in the Hrynivka 525 borehole (Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep) show that δ34S values in anhydrite range from +20.2 to +22.7‰ and the average value of δ34S is +21.4 ± 0.3‰. Those values are similar to those of the Neogene marine sulphates. Comparison to other geochemical data (chemical composition of the brine contained in fluid inclusions and the bromine content in halite) suggests that the Badenian Carpathian Foredeep evaporite basin was supplied predominately by seawater solutes where, at different stages of salt accumulation, the influence of continental waters with lighter isotopic compositions of dissolved sulphate was important. The isotopic composition of sulphur (δ 34S) of Badenian seawater, calculated on the basis of sixty analyses of anhydrite related to halite of the Carpathian Region, is approximately +20.3‰, this value being similar to the sulphur isotopic composition of present-day seawater. The δ 34S value for Badenian seawater may have been slightly higher if we consider potential changes of the brine composition of salt-bearing basins caused by inflow of continental waters enriched in light 32S isotopes.

The Upper Badenian marly shales overlying gypsum and the Ratyn Limestone at Shchyrets, Ukraine, contain moderately to well-preserved benthic (calcareous only) and planktonic foraminifers, and palynofacies dominated by bisaccate pollen grains, presumably transported by wind. Both foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages indicate an open marine environment with normal-marine salinity and cool waters. The palaeodepth was ca. 50 m except for the uppermost part of the section studied, where a distinctive deepening is indicated by the dominance of Uvigerina in benthic foraminiferal assemblages and a high P/B ratio. The water was thermally stratified and the differences between the bottom water and the water column show an upwards-increasing trend. Bulimina and Globocassidulina are the most common and dominant component of benthic foraminiferal assemblages, except for the uppermost part where Uvigerina dominates the assemblage. The composition of benthic foraminifer assemblages and δ13C values of foraminifers indicate nutrient-rich waters and mesotrophic to eutrotrophic environments in surface waters, and low oxygenation at the sea floor in the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin during the Late Badenian.

Numerical 3D parametric models of temperature and thermal gradient distribution within the Polish Carpathians and the Carpathian Foredeep are constructed for the interval between ground level and the 160°C isotherm. The model construction was preceded by detailed analysis of over 500 thermal logs from the area investigated and its closest vicinity. This analysis showed that the vertical changes in temperature and thermal gradient have a non-linear character with no regular pattern in the distribution of the parameters modelled, so a 3D modeling approach was chosen as the most appropriate method for their quantitative description. Furthermore, standardization of the thermal logs was recognized as mandatory so the influence of drilling process would be eliminated. Among a broad array of methods and their preconditions discussed, the Kukkonen-Szewczyk method was selected for the data collected in the study area. Modeling results show a close relationship between thermal gradient, lithology and petrophysical rock properties as well as a correlation between the distribution of positive thermal anomalies and yield of hydrocarbon accumulations within the Carpathian Foredeep. The accuracy of the model has been assessed as ~10%. The model was then used for discussion of hydrocarbon generation and prediction of formation temperature.

While the marine molluscs from Sarmatian deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin are known in general, there is a paucity of data on the terrestrial gastropods. Recently, a rich assemblage of terrestrial snails, accompanied by freshwater species, was found in Zwierzyniec, in the north-western, marginal part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Among the 38 taxa recognised, there are 22 species found in Poland for the first time; a new clausiliid species Triloba magurkai Stworzewicz sp. nov. is described. Freshwater gastropods (nine Lymnaeidae species and two Planorbidae species) were presented elsewhere. The malacofauna comprises aquatic and typical hygrophilous elements from coastal wetland habitats, some xerophilous species from dry, open environments, and gastropods from an adjacent subtropical woodland.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to compare the assemblages of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton from the Middle Miocene sediments from SE Poland and western Ukraine. Detailed investigations revealed a high degree of similarity of foraminiferal assemblages of the Pecten/Spirialis beds of Poland and the Kosiv Formation of Ukraine. Assemblages from both areas are characterized by numerous arenaceous species of foraminifera (Hyperammina granulosa, Ammodiscus miocenicus, Haplophragmoides indentatus, H. laminatus), radiolarians, pteropods and index planktic species Velapertina indigena. High degrees of similarity also display assemblages from the Krakowiec beds (Poland) and the Dashava Formation (Ukraine). The lower parts of both subdivisions are characterized by the presence of Anomalinoides dividens. Saccammina sarmatica, Bolivina sarmatica, Brizalina nisporenica, and Porosononion granosum occur in the upper parts. Chloropycean Halicoryne morelleti is a characteristic element of the assemblages. The calcareous nannoplankton assemblages contain almost identical species. The deposits lying above the evaporites (which belong to the NN6 zone) are included into the NN6, undivided NN6-NN7, and NN7 zones. The gradual impoverishment of the species of the upper part of NN6 and the lower part of NN7 zones is observed. The assemblages of the Krakowiec beds and the upper part of the Kosiv and Dashava formations are of low species diversity and are mainly restricted to a few species with high abundance. The assemblage is composed of placoliths (Coccolithus and Reticulofenestra species), high number of the reworked nannofossils and damaged elements.

This work is a study on the possibility of using geothermal energy in the area of the Carpathian Foredeep in the Northern area of Tarnów. The information presents the geological structure of the analyzed area along with the characteristics of the Triassic thermal water reservoir, the most interesting in the region. The analysis was conducted on the basis of hydrogeothermal parameters (temperature, mineralization, porosity, permeability, efficiency), which were obtained from the geological and petroleum wells located in the zone of the city and adjacent areas. The analysis estimated potential energy resources. It was pointed out that the best prospects for the development of geothermal energy in the analyzed reservoir makes use in terms of balneo-recreation.

It was possible to determine the cultural context and chronological affiliation of the artefacts. The axe from Izdebki was classified as a type with elevated edges, dated to the BrB phase and associated with the Otomani-Füzesabony culture, whereas the item from Gogołów was classified as a socketed axe with ornamented sides, dated to the period corresponding to HaB1–HaB3. An analysis of the metallurgical composition of objects was carried out, examining the cores and their surfaces (corrosion layers). It was established that both axes represent so-called tin bronzes. The discovered artefacts should probably be considered loose finds.

We aimed to produce tissue cultures and plant regeneration from endangered Crocus species: C. scepusiensis, C. tommasinianus, C. vittatus (“Verni” series of the genus) and C. banaticus. For initiation of cultures we used a plant growth regulator (PGR) combination used for in vitro culture of saffron and its relatives: 10 mg L-1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 1 mg L-1 6-benzyladenine (BA). Shoot tips of young seedlings (C. scepusiensis) and corms (for the rest of species) were used as explants. C. scepusiensis explants developed into organogenic calli. On media with decreased NAA and with or without increased BA concentration, calli produced stigma-like structures and/or shoots and whole plants. In the other species, callus initiation medium induced callus formation with abundant somatic embryos. In C. tommasinianus, embryos developed shoots when auxin content of medium was decreased. In C. banaticus, a decrease of auxin with or without an increase in cytokinin content led to shoot or whole plant regeneration, as in C. scepusiensis. In the case of C. vittatus and C. banaticus, initiation and/or maintenance of cultures on indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and increased sucrose concentration stimulated whole plant regeneration and in vitro cormlet development. C. scepusiensis and the rest of cultures (organogenic vs. embryogenic) differed at the biochemical level: C. scepusiensis cultures had higher (yet still low) enzymatic antioxidant (catalase, peroxidase) activities. With respect to catalase isoenzyme patterns, C. banaticus was different from the rest of cultures, demonstrating its distinct taxonomical position. Besides germplasm preservation use of the present cultures, they have a potential biotechnological value.

Opis:
Brown coal and overlying sand strata from the Łukowa-4 borehole, located in the northeastern sector of the Carpathian Foredeep in Poland, were studied for palynology. These strata are underlain by Upper Eocene sands, and covered by Middle Miocene rocks. Coal beds yielded infrequent sporomorphs and freshwater algae Botryococcus. The presence of the latter indicates that these deposits accumulated in a freshwater environment whereas sporomorph assemblages point to the presence of mixed forests with a significant portion of thermophilous taxa. Age of the coal beds has been established based both on the presence of species that appear for the last time in the Early Oligocene, and on the similarity with sporomorph spectra from the Lower Oligocene of the Polish Lowlands. Overlying sands yielded marine dinoflagellate cysts, which point to a marine sedimentary setting, and frequent sporomorphs. The latter indicate the presence of mixed mesophytic forests, bush swamps, swamp forests, and riparian forests in the vicinity of lacustrine environments. Stratigraphic analysis of dinoflagellate cyst and sporomorph assemblages suggests that the sands accumulated in early stages of Miocene transgression in the Carpathian Foredeep in the latest Early–early Middle Miocene. Our climatic interpretation of the sporomorph spectra suggests that the climate during deposition of the strata was relatively warm, although less frequent thermophilous taxa recorded in the Miocene sands suggest a slightly cooler climate than that deducted from the spectra yielded by the underlying Lower Oligocene coal beds. Correlation of Lower Oligocene coal beds with neighbouring coeval marine sands suggests diverse morphological conditions in the Carpathian foreland at that time, partly covered by a sea, and partly emerged. A similar, morphologically diverse basement in the Carpathian foreland favoured accumulation of Lower Miocene phytogenic deposits. A similar stratigraphic position of both Lower Oligocene and Lower Miocene coal beds in the Carpathian Foredeep may result in a false correlation of these strata devoid of fossils, which are commonly regarded as Miocene.

Opis:
The Middle Miocene (middle Badenian) "gypsum-ghost" limestones composed of calcite and/or sulphur pseudomorphs after selenitic gypsum, are a salient feature of the Polish sulphur deposits from the northern Carpathian Foredeep (S. Poland). Sulphurous rocks (including the gypsum-ghost limestones) are present within the evaporite unit, the so-called "Chemical Series", and are commonly believed to be lithological equivalents of synchronous gypsum deposits, resulting from regionally extensive, wholesale replacement of the sele-nite lithofacies by limestones and limestone + native sulphur. However, detailed geochemical examination of regional major and minor element compositions in these unusual carbonates suggests considerable internal differences. Distinct variations in chemical distribution along the main development of the Osiek-Baranów Sandomierski native sulphur deposit, together with the associated barren limestone areas, are clearly recognized. The pattern of the geochemical parameters of these gypsum-ghost limestones is inconsistent with an epigenetic model of formation of the Polish sulphur deposits (wholesale replacement of sulphate deposits by carbonates + native sulphur) and argues for their formation within a sedimentary-early diagenetic regime.

Opis:
Foraminifers occurring in marls underlying the Middle Miocene Badenian gypsum in the northern Polish Carpathian Foredeep in one borehole section [Młyny (Busko) PIG 1] and in two dewatering pits in operating quarries (Leszcze and Borków) contain well-preserved foraminifers. Sixty-seven species of benthic and twenty-one species of planktonic foraminifers are recorded in the 12-m-thick section of the Młyny borehole. Benthic assemblages are characterized by the dominance of Bulimina and Uvigerina while planktonic assemblages are composed mainly by warm-water orbulinids and Globigerinoides spp. in the lower part of the Młyny section and by temperate-cold water Globigerina spp. in the upper part of the Młyny section as well as the Leszcze and Borków sections. The taxonomic composition of foraminiferal assemblages makes it possible to distinguish two foraminiferal zones in the Młyny borehole: the Orbulina suturalis and Uvigerina costai zones, and only the latter zone is accessible at Leszcze and Borków. The benthic foraminiferal successions in the studied interval suggest oxygenation and productivity changes in the Carpathian Foredeep Basin prior to the Badenian salinity crisis. Four intervals of lowered oxygenation and/or elevated organic flux to the sea-floor are recognized; the intervals in which foraminiferal assemblages suggest marine environments with lowered oxygenation in bottom waters alternate between the intervals where stress markers form less than 50% of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Benthic assemblages are moderately to highly diversified, and species have more equal frequencies. The upsection decrease in the proportion of planktonic foraminifers reflects the shallowing of the basin accompanied by a decrease in the temperature gradient between the upper (warmer) and deeper (colder) water beds. The average palaeotemperature of water based on d18O of Uvigerina and Globigerina decreased by ca. 2 and ca. 6°C, respectively (from 9.9 and 17.4°C in the Orbulina suturalis Zone to 7.9 and 11.5°C in the Uvigerina costai Zone, respectively). Below the gypsum, the d18O values of both benthic and planktonic foraminifers show quite large variations possibly due to the salinity increase. Coeval domination of benthic foraminiferal assemblages by Bulimina suggests increased surface water productivity and an increased organic flux to the sea-floor prior to the onset of evaporite deposition and/or salinity increase.

Opis:
Seven Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian to Lower Sarmatian) sedimentary sections of the Central Paratethys, two from the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin (PCFB) and five from the Eastern Carpathian Foreland Basin (ECFB) of Romania and the Republic of Moldova have been analysed micropalaeontologically to better constrain the Badenian-Sarmatian Extinction Event, characterized by significant taxonomic impoverishment of both foraminifers and ostracods. Ourstudies show significant palaeoenvironmental changes in the basin including depth, salinity, oxygenation, and organic matter flux. The occurrence of moderately diverse planktonic foraminifera (Globigerina, Globigerinita, Globorotalia, Trilobatus, Orbulina, Velapertina) in the Upper Badenian deposits of the PCFB as well as in the ECFB and their rarity in the lowermost Sarmatian indicate an almost fully marine environment during the latest Badenian, followed by a significant regression and possible appearance of much more restricted marine conditions across the boundary. The taxonomic composition of the Sarmatian foraminifera, ostracoda and calcareous nannofossils indicate that during this interval the salinity fluctuated strongly, with the water regime varying from brackish to normal marine. In addition, the identified micropalaeontological assemblages identified show palaeoenvironmental similarity across different basins of the Central Paratethys. This supports a hypothesis of possible connections during the latest Badenian between different areas of the Central Paratethys, as well as of the existence of a gateway between the Central Paratethys and the Mediterranean realm.

The paper presents a 3D (spatial) analysis of deformation processes in the landslide slope Bystrzyca in Szymbark near Gorlice (Low Beskid – Carpathians; N 49°37′ 09″, E 21°05′ 49″) carried out by the computer code FLAC3D based on the finite difference method. The numerical analysis was performed to determine the influence of the orientation of layers and discontinuities and of hydrogeological conditions on slope deformations and the failure mechanism during sliding processes. The massif is modeled as an elasto-plastic medium obeying the Coulomb-Mohr criterion. Two variants of hydrogeological conditions are analyzed, namely the “dry slope” (without water) and the “wet slope” (entirely saturated). The influence of the orientation of discontinuities (modeled as “ubiquitous”) on the landslide mechanism is investigated as well. Few orientations of discontinuities with respect to the dip direction of the slope surface are considered, namely consequent, insequent, and subsequent (two variants in each case). The results show a clear impact of the pattern of discontinuities and hydrogeological conditions on the deformational behavior of the landslide and the shape of the slip surface. The 3D approach and results of the numerical simulation of the landslide movement prove the necessity of 3D modeling in some cases.

The result and interpretation of reservoir tests (DST) are presented in the paper. They were performed in 20 intervals of 17 production wells in years 1995-1997. These wells are located in the Central Carpathians (flysch sand beds) and mainly in the external and internal Carpathian Foredeep (the autochthonous and allochthonous Miocene thin bedded sandstones) and their substratum (mainly carbonates). The basies of the theoretical diagnoses for determining the main types of drainage zones or limits of hydrocarbon accumulations are presented in the form of a short description of the Kappa Company's programmatic procedure (Saphir 202B system). Some diagnostic diagrams for the main reservoir border models are described using the log-log method. Examples of their geological interpretation are also provided.

The aim of the paper is to present funeral customs of communities that inhabited the Carpathian foothills of Vistula and San rivers basins at the Final Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age representing Corded Ware and Mierzanowice cultures in the light of new chronometric data. These radiocarbon data were obtained for barrows at site 3 in Średnia, Przemyśl district and Jawczyce, Wieliczka district site 1, mound 2. According to conduct-ed investigations the earliest barrows in this region can be dated to the beginning of the 29th century BC. Then in the younger phase of the Corded Ware culture the exploitation of existing mound continued so subsequent graves were dug into the embankment. This burial rite lasted until the turn of the 24th and 23rd centuries BC so can be synchronised with the presence of niche graves to the north of Carpathian foothills. Afterwards during the Early Bronze Age starting at the 22nd century BC communities of the Mierzanowice culture also chose existing mounds as a place to bury their dead. Therefore one can con-clude that in funeral rites of the Corded Ware and Mierzanowice cultures groups in the Carpathian foothills the barrow as the burial place of their ancestors played the main role.

Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) were applied for well log data derived from heterolithic intervals drilled in two boreholes (Mrowla-1 and Cierpisz-2) in the Miocene fill of the Carpathian Foredeep. Both boreholes penetrated similar basement elevations conductive for structural trapping of hydrocarbons in an overlying thin-bedded heterolithic reservoir, which produces gas in commercial quantities in one borehole. The PCA was used to reduce data space preserving sufficient amounts of parameters for a differentiation between thin layers of sandstones and mudstones and between gas- and water-saturated horizons. In both boreholes, the number of logs was reduced to four significant principal components (PCs). Differences between gas-saturated and water-saturated layers were found. CA was used for the classification and grouping of data according to natural petrophysical features of the analysed rocks. The group corresponding to gas-saturated zones was found in the Cierpisz-2 borehole. It is concluded that PCA and CA can provide useful information for a more reliable identification of gas-saturated horizons.

Badenian evaporites of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin represent the lower part of the NN6 zone and are underlain and overlain by deep-water deposits. Halite and associated deposits in the central part of the Badenian evaporite basin show the same facies successions and marker beds can be traced across and between individual basins. Characteristic marker beds made it possible to correlate various facies zones of the marginal Ca-sulfate platform. These marker beds seem to reflect events that may be related to sudden and widespread changes in water chemistry, which in turn imply major changes in basin hydrology. The onset of the evaporitic deposition in the Carpathian Foredeep was clearly diachronous and the evaporites deposited in the basin centre preceded the beginning of evaporite sedimentation in the marginal basin, however, depositional history in the marginal basin and the basin center was the same. Sedimentological and geochemical data indicate recycling of evaporites throughout most of the evaporite deposition.

The microbiological research on the area of the palaeontological site in Starunia (Ukraine) reveals the details of biological activity of the near-surface layers and Quaternary sediments. In Starunia area remnants of a mammoth and three woolly rhinoceroses, and one almost completely preserved rhinoceros carcass were found in 1907 and 1929. The gained quantitative results regarding the occurrence of different physiological groups of microorganisms show that their number varied significantly depending on the sampling place, sampling depth, pH, humidity and the organic matter content. The amount and differentiation of the tested groups of microorganisms typically decreased with the depth. In several deep-sampling locations there was increase in the microorganisms, especially with methanogens and methanotrophs. The metanogens occurred mainly in Pleistocene sediments, comprised of clayey mud and peat, while saprophytic microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes) occur in Holocene sediments comprised of clayey mud, peat and peat mud. The quantity of microorganisms in selected boreholes was related to high concentration of the organic matter (mainly peat and peat mud) and correlated with methane occurrence.

Within the Carpathian Foredeep, open marine basin evolved into restricted evaporitic basin during the Badenian (Serravallian), and along the Carpathian front chloride sub-basins developed. The studies of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton were conducted to obtain new biostratigraphic data which could constrain the age and correlation of the salt deposits between Wieliczka-Bochnia in Poland, and Kalush in the Ukraine. These studies proved that chloride deposits (in the Ukrainian territory also potassium salts) originated generally during the same period corresponding to the Late Badenian NN6 zone and undivided NN6-NN7 zone. The uppermost part of sub-evaporitic beds belongs to the boundary between the NN5 and NN6 zones, although locally (Bochnia Salt Mine) only the NN6 zone was found. This suggests that the lower boundary of salt deposits can be diachronous. Deposits overlying the salt (Chodenice and lowermost part of Grabowiec beds - Bogucice Sands) represent the Late Badenian NN6/NN7 zone. The similarity in age between the folded Middle Miocene strata in Poland (Zgłobice Unit) and the Ukraine (Sambir Unit) implies that they were folded during the same time and that they can represent one tectonic unit, develo ped in front of the advancing Carpathian orogen.

Radiocarbon dating applied on several occasions in the past to date animal bones and animal soft tissue originating from the area of the Starunia palaeontological site turned out to be very controversial. Although investigations of Pleistocene flora in the Starunia area go back to the beginning of the 20th century, no published 14C dates of such material are available to date. Sixteen boreholes drilled in the area of the Pleistocene mammals discoveries, in the framework of a multidisciplinary research project (2006-2009), have been selected for radiocarbon dating of plant macrofossils. Moreover, five samples of plant remnants extracted from two outcrops in the area were 14C-dated. The nature of the dated plant material, in some cases soaked with oil, posed specific methodological problems. Although applied chemical treatment of macrofossil samples led to complete removal of contaminating hydrocarbons in the case of small pieces, some ageing effects in terms of radiocarbon dating cannot be completely ruled out. Radiocarbon ages of macrofossil samples originating from the close neighbourhood of the location, where the "second" woolly rhinoceros was found at a depth of 12.5 m, suggest that the minimum age of sediments in which the Pleistocene mammals were found is in the range of ca. 35-40 ka BP. A broad consistency between palynological reconstruction of Younger Dryas/Preboreal boundary and the corresponding radiocarbon ages of macrofossils is observed for locations, where the natural sedimentary sequence for late Glacial and early Holocene was not disturbed by extensive mining activity in the area.

The aim of this study was the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the calcareous nannofossil assemblages of the Machów Formation, belonging to the supra-evaporitic complex of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin (PCFB). The work was concentrated in the eastern part of the PCFB, in the Sieniawa–Rudka area (Ryszkowa Wola Horst). Samples were collected from the Rudka-13 and Wylewa-1 boreholes. On the basis of calcareous nannoplankton, these deposits were assigned to the upper part of the NN6 Zone combined with the NN7 Zone, which corresponds to the Sarmatian s.s. of the Central Paratethys (upper Serravallian of the Mediterranean scale). Conclusive determination of the biozone NN7 was problematic, owing to the absence of the rare zonal marker species Discoaster kugleri. The typical association of the undivided NN6–NN7 Zone was of low species diversity and usually dominated by Coccolithus pelagicus, Cyclicargolithus floridanus and Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilica (> 7 µm). On the basis of the relative abundance of species, a significant amount of redeposition was deduced. The reworked nannofossils were mostly Eocene in age. The Oligocene, Early Miocene and Late Cretaceous species occurred much less frequently. The dominance of Eocene forms indicates the Carpathians as the main supply area. The Late Cretaceous taxa may have originated from the Senonian marly deposits of the Miechów Trough in the north. Statistical treatment of the quantitative data was performed using multivariate cluster analysis and Nonmetrical Multidimensional Scaling (nMDS). The composition of the calcareous nannofossil assemblages, together with the high percentage of allochthonous taxa, indicate a shallow, coastal environment with a high supply of nutrients.

W pracy przedstawiono metodę i wyniki numerycznego modelowania procesów deformacji osuwiska na stoku Maślanej Góry w okolicach Szymbarku k. Gorlic (Beskid Niski). Jest to stare, rozległe osuwisko o skomplikowanej strukturze i o zaawansowanych deformacjach, jednak wciąż aktywne. W masywie skalnym zbocza przeważają słabe i miękkie łupki ilaste.
The paper presents the method and results of numerical modelling of deformations on the landslide slope Maślana Góra in neighbourhood of Szymbark near Gorlice (Beskid Niski Mts.). It is complex, large landslide in advanced stage, but still active. The slope is composed of weak and soft clay shale. Numerical analysis performed using FLAC 2D program, based on finite difference method allowed to estimate the influence of water conditions on the landslide activity. It has been proved that the slide probability of the whole slope in the same time is low, but the zones having smaller extent can move gradually. Attention has been paid on the possibility of the interpretation of deformation processes basing on the displacement curves in vertical profiles.

The Czarny Dunajec is a typical river originating in high mountains (the Western Tatras). Over the entire Quaternary era the river laboured carrying material away from the Tatras and depositing it in the form of a typical braided channel at their foot. At the end of the 19'h century, river management projects and quarrying operations located directly in the very channel set off a rejuvenation process that was further accelerated at the end of 1960s. The activities resulted in the damaged several sections in their natural form and considerably deepened the channel. Measures taken to restrict the amount of material entering the Czorsztyn Dam have largely failed. From the geomorphologic and environmental points of view a continued transformation of the Czarny Dunajec river channel should be regarded as highly adverse.

Anomalously high monthly precipitation totals in the Polish Carpathian Mountains and their foreland (1881–2010)The study addresses the problem of river flooding and other dangerous natural processes as well as phenomena resulting from persistent heavy rainfall. Annual and multi-annual records of anomalously heavy precipitation were investigated using data from 16 weather stations in the Polish Carpathian Mountains and their foreland from the period 1881–2010. The anomalously high precipitation was studied in terms of its annual and multi-annual pattern, time of occurrence, spatial extent and the coinciding atmospheric circulation. The anomalously high monthly totals were defined as those, which exceeded the upper quartile plus 1.5x the interquartile range. It was found that during the 130 years of the study period, there were 200 anomalously heavy precipitation months (AHMs), which occurred in 106 years. Most of them were only recorded at either a single station or at two neighbouring stations, which would suggest that precipitation of this magnitude depends not just on circulation circumstances, but also on local factors. No statistical change was found in the long-term A H M occurrence pattern. There were two instances, where an A H M was recorded simultaneously at all 16 stations, in May 1940 and 2010, and they both contributed to catastrophic floods. The latter of the events involved both the highest absolute totals (exceeding 500 mm) and the highest relative totals (i.e. the percentage of the long-term average close to 500%). The A H Ms tended to coincide with cyclonic circulation. Between October and March, this was the western cyclonic circulation ( Wc ), while for the remaining part of the year it was cyclonic trough (Bc).

The article addresses the structural–temporal changes in the characteristics of the labour market in the oblasts of the Carpathian region of Ukraine (Lvivska, Zakarpatska, Ivano-Frankivska and Chernivetska) due to the large-scale Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Regional, sectoral and market condition–related changes in the labour market and employment in the region during the war are identified. The article defines the threats to the functioning of the regional labour market, which are related to growing unemployment, increasing pressure on social infrastructure and the domestic labour market, reduction in human resources and the growing trend of relocation of business and skilled workers from the western oblasts of Ukraine to other countries. The policy for social-labour stabilisation of the oblasts in the Carpathian region of Ukraine in conditions of war and post-war recovery is substantiated.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of absolute dating and biostratigraphical analysis carried out for alluvial sediments of an abandoned Starunia ozokerite mine located in the Velyky Lukavets River valley, in which large mammal remains were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. The sediments build up three terrace levels. The highest one, up to 8 m high (terrace II), is likely to be associated with a stage of aggradation, as well as with a short episode of valley broadening, which occurred in the Weichselian Late Pleniglacial. The lower one, 4 m high (terrace I), is most likely to be linked with the Holocene, despite a considerable transformation of its top due to mining activity. The lower part of this terrace cover bears coarse-grained channel sediments dated to 120.6-58.9 ka BP (Eemian Interglacial?-Early Pleniglacial - OIS 5e, 4 and 3), and overbank (distal floodplain) mud with intercalations of biogenic deposits (peat, peat mud and biogenic mud). The overbank deposits are dated to 48.2-11.11 ka BP (Glinde Interstadial?-Younger Dryas, OIS 3-2) and are overlain by Holocene (OIS 1) mud and biogenic deposits. In boreholes drilled in the vicinity of the present-day river channel, younger sediments occur more frequently. These include sediments originating from the Late Weichselian overlain by Holocene sediments. However, sediments originating exclusively from the Holocene are infrequent. The deposition of sediments took place in specific conditions of a permanent saturation of the environment with brine, petroleum and thickened bitumen. In the longest period of deposition (48.2-1.27 ka BP), ephemeral swamps, ponds and lakes were developed in different parts of the floodplain. They were marked by the presence of: Juncus glaucus/effusus, J. articulatus, Typha sp., Batrachium sp., Potamogeton filliformis, Bidens tripartita, Ranunculus sceleratus and Phragmites communis, as well as by halophytic species, like: Zannichellia palustris, Triglochin maritimum, Schoenoplectus tabernemontani, Puccinelia distans and Eleocharis palustris. Rhythmic oscillations between cold and warm climatic conditions, typical of the Weichselian age and well identified in Western Europe, are here marked by the changes of plant communities (woody assemblages passing into steppe and tundra), but are not noticeably recorded in the sediments of the Velyky Lukavets River. This shows that the greatest part of the discussed period involved the formation of poorly differentiated silty overbank sediments with intercalations of biogenic sediments. However, the variability of sediments provides evidence for extreme events which occurred in the Holocene.

Abstract: In his ground-breaking research on the sedimentary structures of turbidites, Stanisław Dżułyński demonstrated and took to new levels of accomplishment the defining attributes of the Kraków School of flysch sedimentology established by Marian Książkiewicz at the Jagiellonian University. These attributes included a meticulous approach to fieldwork, the ability to recognize the scalar and vector relationships of diverse sedi- mentary features, a working knowledge of several languages, a capacity to describe systematically structures that had previously received scant attention in the world literature of geology, and innovation in the transfer of scientific knowledge. Dżułyński also added elements that were distinctively his own: a highly inventive approach to the replication of turbidite sedimentary structures in laboratory flumes, an openness to new ideas, boundless enthusiasm for his chosen field, and an exuberantly outgoing personality. In spite of worldwide recognition for his numerous and wide-ranging achievements in geology, he viewed himself first and foremost as one of the senior students of Marian Książkiewicz. In this role, Dżułyński utilised every opportunity to present with great insight and objectivity the work of the Kraków School, enthusiastically shared his extensive knowledge of sedimentology with experienced colleagues and new acquaintances alike and, in particular, gave generous encouragement to young researchers.

The Hungarian Transdanubian site of Érd, where a Mousterian industry and abundant osteological material were discovered in the early 1960s is well known to prehistorians. The remains of megaherbivores (Mammuthus primigenius, Coelodonta antiquitatis) are re-examined here under the taphonomic and archaeozoological components in order to complete the Hungarian and European s.l. data and reassess the potential exploitation of these two pachyderms in the Neanderthal diet and economy. The cut marks, the intense activity of carnivores/hyenas and the skeletal profiles indicate a mixed origin of the carcasses. Mortality patterns of rhinoceros are characterized by the presence of young, subadult and adults, and suggest multiple acquisition by active scavenging and/or hunting with quick access. Skeletal profiles suggest a selective transport of rich/nutritive elements by humans to the site. The cut marks and fracturing of some elements (in situ butchery treatment) confirm that Neanderthals consumed these species on site and that they had at least partial primary access. The mode of acquisition seems active with rapid access for a young mammoth. Érd confirms the Neanderthal exploitation of rhinos and mammoths in their steppic environment during the Middle Palaeolithic. Érd is currently the only Hungarian Middle Palaeolithic site with a proven exploitation and consumption of these megaherbivores.

Szczegółowo scharakteryzowano poziomy tufitowe z mioceńskich utworów zapadliska przedkarpackiego występujących w otworach wiertniczych Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 i Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1. Badania mineralogiczno-petrograficzne tufitów wykonano pod mikroskopem optycznym i skaningowym z zastosowaniem analizy SEM-EDS. Skład chemiczny całych próbek tufitów oznaczono metodami ICP i INAA.
The paper presents detailed description of the tuffite levels from the Busko (Młyny) PIG-1 and Kazimierza Wielka (Donosy) PIG-1 boreholes (Miocene, Carpathian Foredeep). Mineral and petrographic composition of the tuffites was examined with a polarizing microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS). Chemical composition of whole rock samples was determined with the ICP and INAA methods. Research has shown that the tuffite levels differ in terms of the chemical composition of glass, alkaline plagioclase content, grain size of the components and content of typical rock-forming minerals (e.g. biotite, pyroclastic quartz and potassium feldspar). Normal gradations and lamination of the tuffites indicate that they originated as a result of sedimentation of volcanic ash in marine conditions. Degree of preservation of pyroclastic minerals in the tuffites reflects changes in the geochemical environment of deposition. The first tuffite level above the evaporites, the most widespread and with characteristic chemical composition of pyroclastic components, can be applied in the correlation of deposits in the Carpathian Foredeep.

Hydrogeological environment of the Badenian molasse formation in the south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin is described in this paper. Groundwater environment was analysed taking into account the geological structure of the sedimentary basin, hydraulic properties of rocks, development of hydrodynamic field and the results of hydrochemical, isotopic and dissolved gases investigations. Hydrodynamic and hydrochemical zonation is typical of sedimentary basins. Hydrochemical zonation of the study area is characterized by the increase of water mineralization with depth from 0.9 to 57 g/dm3, and the water chemical type change: HCO3-Cl-Na - Cl-Na - Cl-Na-Ca. Within the horst structures where thickness of the Badenian formation is reduced, a gravitational flow system takes place. In the tectonic grabens, at the depth below 500 m, buried synsedimentary waters were discovered.

The Upper Jurassic coral-algal Swarzów Formation in the Dąbrowa Tarnowska–Szczucin area, occuring in the middle part of the Carpathian Foreland Poland contains rich macrofossils (i.e. scleractinian corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, algae) and generally sparse assemblages of microfossils. Some of the latter are interesting as a biostratigraphical tool. Thus, the presence of rare calpionellids (Calpionella alpina, C. aff. alpina, Crassicolaria cf. brevis, Tintinopsella cf. carpatica) argues for Late Tithonian age (standard Crassicollaria zone) of the upper part of this formation. It is suggested that the Swarzów Limestone Formation almost entirely represents the Tithonian, which probably reaches the lowest part of the lithostratigraphic unit of the Smęgorzów Limestone-Dolomitic Coquina Formation. The upper part of this unit may belong to the Lower Cretaceous, to Berriasian.

Opis:
Sulphur, oxygen and strontium isotope compositions have been measured in sulphate (gypsum and anhydrite) sam ples from the Badenian evaporite complex in the Carpathian Foredeep Basin (Poland) to determine the origin of brines from which these sulphates were formed. Studied samples display the d values from +22.68 to +24.91‰ CDT for sulphur (ten samples) and from +12.26 to +13.63‰ SMOW for oxygen (ten samples), and 87Sr/86Sr ratios from 0.708915 to 0.716329 (six samples). Most samples show isotopic values (both d34S and 87Sr/86Sr) higher than contem poraneous (Badenian) sea water, and thus suggest that these sulphates were formed (i) from brines with a significant component of non-marine waters, (ii) in a restricted system, where an important role was played by meteoric water inputs as well as by bacterial sulphate reduction. The results of this study show clear differences in the isotopic signatures between sedimen tary (gypsum) and diagenetic (anhydrite) lithofacies. While sedimentary gypsum displays sulphur, oxygen and strontium isotope ratios close to contemporaneous (Badenian) sea water, diagenetic anhydrite values are largely elevated. The higher isotopic values (d34S, d18O and 87Sr/86Sr) for anhydrite when compared to gypsum are interpreted as reflecting different hydrological provenances of sulphate in the Badenian basin. Gypsum was formed from brines marine in origin that were subject to an important in flow of continental waters and a local bacterial sulphate reduction in arestricted, and there fore sulphate-limited basin, which is consistent with earlier interpre tations based on sedimentological and geochemical studies. Our study shows that brines from which anhydrite was formed had a highly-radiogenic non-marine (riverine, ground water) strontium component, which is a new contribution to the knowledge on the Badenian sulphate formation. The results reflect a lateral compositional evolution of parent waters during sulphate deposition and diagenesis in the Carpathian Foredeep Basin.

Opis:
The Upper Badenian and Sarmatian sandstones recognized from boreholes in southeastern Poland and western Ukraine are very fine to medium-grained subarkosic and sublithic arenites and wackes. The deposits underwent diagenesis well below 100°C, and their evolutionary pathways of diagenetic and related reservoir properties represent eo- and mesodiagenesis. Eodiagenesis here comprised mechanical compaction, development of chlorite, microcrystalline calcite, pyrite, siderite, kaolinite and quartz, and dissolution of feldspar and mica grains. Mesodiagenesis included quartz and K-feldspar overgrowths, albitisation, crystallisation of dolomite and ankerite and coarsely crystalline calcite, dissolution of feldspar grains and carbonate cement, and illite growth. The isotopic data of δ18OVPDB of carbonate cements suggest their crystallisation from porewater which is a mixture of marine and meteoric waters. The δ13CVPDB values suggest derivation of carbon from microbial methanogenesis of organic matter. The 87Sr/86Sr values in coarsely crystalline calcite are higher than those of Badenian seawater. The radiogenic strontium may have been supplied during diagenesis by meteoric waters draining the continental area. The Middle Miocene sandstones show better filtration abilities (good and very good) in the western part of the study area (Poland) than in the east. Primary intergranular porosity is more frequent than secondary intragranular and intercrystalline porosities. The primary porosity was diminished due to compaction and cementation from west to east. Some increase in porosity was caused by dissolution of detrital grains and by decay of soft parts of organisms.

Seismic data and core from the shallow cartographic Pilzno P-7 borehole were used to construct a new model of the Carpathian orogenic front between Tarnów and Pilzno, in the Pogórska Wola area (southern Poland). The most external, frontal thrust of the orogenic wedge (the Jaśniny structure) was identified as a syn-depositional fault-propagation fold de- tached above the Upper Badenian evaporites. Its formation was controlled by the presence of mechanically weak foredeep evaporites and by the morphology of the sub-Miocene Meso-Paleozoic foreland plate (Jaśniny and Pogórska Wola palaeovalleys). The frontal zone of the Carpathian orogenic wedge (the Skole thrust sheet and the deformed foredeep deposits of the Zgłobice thrust sheet) is characterized by significant backthrusting of the foredeep succession towards the south, and by the presence of a triangle zone, with strongly deformed Upper Badenian evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation in its core. The triangle zone was formed during the latest thrusting movements of the Carpathians. An indication of the existence of the triangle zone in the vicinity of Dębica has also been provided by reinterpretation of the archive regional geological cross-section. The youngest foredeep deposits, brought to the surface above the backthrust, have been dated as Sarmatian (NN7 nannoplankton zone), which indicates that the latest thrust movements within the frontal Carpathian orogenic in the vicinity of Tarnów-Dębica took place approx. 11-10 million years ago. Thermochronological studies (AFT and AHe) indicated that the foredeep succession drilled by the Pilzno P-7 borehole has not been buried deeper than 1.5-2 km, which is compatible with reconstruction based on the seismic data.

The depositional environment of the southern part of the Carpathian Foredeep in the Czech Republic was studied in two boreholes using sedimentological and palaeontological methods. Eight lithofacies were recognised within cores of the early Badenian deposits, comprising two facies associations, namely deposits of a coarse-grained Gilbert delta and offshore deposits. As sem blages of foraminifers document the early Badenian (Middle Miocene age). Two types of assemblages were recognised: (1) primary taphocoenoses reflecting the original environment of sedimentation, i. e. a relatively deep sublittoral (circalittoral) environment with low to normal ox ygen bottom conditions and deep-water euryoxibiont foraminifers, numerous planktonic foraminifers, agglutinated foraminifers and mixed assemblages of deep- and shallow-water foraminifers, (2) secondary taphocoenoses of shallower sublittoral (infralittoral) condition redeposited into the basin by gravity currents. These assemblages contain shallow-water foraminifers coupled with an abundant and diverse bryozoan fauna.

Opis:
The paper presents new data on the Miocene development within the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The Miocene succession of the study area is characterized by high thickness and highly variable lithology. In the Miocene sediments of the studied area, the presence of organic matter in the form of a coal layer, coal crumbs, and dispersed organic matter has been found. The research focused mainly on the analysis of organic matter in terms of its origin, degree of coalification, and depositional environment. The degree of coalification of organic matter was determined by the huminite/vitrinite reflectance. The hard brown coal layer with a thickness of about eight meters was identified within the Kłodnica Formation. Based on the textural properties and degree of coalification, brown coal was classified as dull brown coal and bright brown coal. Organic matter in the form of coal crumbs and dispersed organic matter were found within a package clastic sedimentary. On the basis of petrographic analysis, two types of allochthonous organic matter with different degrees of coalification were identified. The coal clasts are mainly of Carboniferous origin, while the Miocene redeposited brown coal grains dominate within the dispersed organic matter. Coal fragments and dispersed organic matter derived from the Miocene brown coal were also found within the black claystones. The study of organic matter of the Miocene sediments in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin showed both its autochthonous and allochthonous origins.
Substancja organiczna w postaci okruchów węgla i rozproszonej substancji organicznej zidentyfikowana została w obrębie pakietu klastycznych skał okruchowych. Na podstawie analizy petrograficznej zidentyfikowano dwa rodzaje allochtonicznej materii organicznej o różnym stopniu uwęglenia. Okruchy węgla są głównie pochodzenia karbońskiego, natomiast w rozproszonej materii organicznej dominują redeponowane ziarna mioceńskiego węgla brunatnego. Okruchy węgla i rozproszoną materię organiczną pochodzącą z mioceńskiego węgla brunatnego stwierdzono również w czarnych iłowcach. Badania materii organicznej osadów mioceńskich w Górnośląskim Zagłębiu Węglowym wykazały zarówno jej autochtoniczne, jak i allochtoniczne pochodzenie.

Opis:
Heterolithic complexes from the Carpathian Foredeep are a subject of growing attention as many natural gas accumulations of industrial importance have been discovered in such formations during the last decades. The aim of the presented work was to determine lithotypes of different lithology and mineralogical composition in the heterolithic sequences. Individual lithotypes were distinguished of macroscopic observations of cores, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence method (XRF). Preliminary distinction between the lithotypes was based on macroscopic observations of the core samples. Correlation plots between the contents of particular minerals (XRD analyses) and corresponding elements (XRF analyses) were used for verification of the lithotypes distinguished based on macroscopic observations. Swelling properties of the investigated rocks were determined using the cation exchange capacity (CEC) values. The following lithotypes were identified: medium- to fine-grained sandstones, fine- to very fine-grained sandstones, clayey sandstones, sand-dominated heteroliths, heteroliths with approx. equal proportions of sandstones and mudstones, mud-dominated heteroliths, mudstones, clayey shales. Such division provides a basis for precise petrophysical characterization of the analyzed profiles, that is assignment of particular petrophysical parameters values to individual lithotypes. More reliable petrophysical parameters in the geophysical interpretation of heterolithic sequences allow for a more precise determination of zones characterized by good reservoir parameters.

Opis:
In the type-area of the Eggenburgian regional stage (Lower Burdigalian) sands with large-scale clinoforms were studied north-west of Eggenburg (Lower Austria). Stratigraphic and facies architecture, palaeocurrent pattern and inferred palaeogeographic setting show that these sands are deposits of W-E trending and SW to SSE prograding coastal spit systems, attached to crystalline shoals or islets in the shallow marine Eggenburg Bay. The spits were dominantly formed by shoal parallel accretion above fair-weather wave base due to longshore transport. The 4-5 m thick clinoforms with bottomset, foreset and topset structures contain up to 3.6 m thick, steeply inclined foresets, dominated by sediment gravity-flow deposition. Relatively stable depositional conditions, characterized by strong unidirectional currents, high sand supply and sufficient accommodation space are assumed for their formation. However, internal reactivation surfaces indicate variations in current activity, orientation and velocity. The deposits of spit systems are interpreted as part of a transgressive systems tract. The provenance analysis reveals the local Moravian and Moldanubian crystalline rocks as principal source. The spit sands of the Burgschleinitz Formation show the highest mineralogical maturity within the studied Lower Miocene succession. Intense reworking and redeposition of material from older deposits is evident. Due to the ongoing transgression deposits of the following Gauderndorf Formation and Zogelsdorf Formation exhibit a larger catchment area with input of high amounts of fresh weathered material.

Opis:
The early Badenian interval in the Central Paratethys realm is characterized by a major marine transgression into the Pannonian and Carpathian Foredeep basins. In the western part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep, Badenian sedimentation started generally with conglomerates (Dębowiec Formation) passing into a thick succession of claystones and mudstones with rare sandstone interbeds (Skawina Formation). Profiles containing a full sequence of lower Badenian strata are relatively rare, and are mainly known from boreholes. In this paper, we present new results on samples taken from such a borehole (Kaczyce K2/07) located near the town of Cieszyn. We focus on reconstructing the chronology of the lower Badenian marine sediments at the beginning of the transgression in the Carpathian Foredeep (lower Skawina Fm.) using radio-isotopic dating (40Ar/39Ar) of a volcanoclastic layer (tuff and tuffite) and biostratigraphy of calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera. The weighted mean 40Ar/39Ar age for sanidine separates from the tuff provided an age of 14.27 ± 0.03 Ma. This age is consistent with the NN5 and MNN5a nannofossil zones determined in this study. Our foraminiferal assemblages show that the basal beds of the Skawina Formation up to the tuffites correspond to the Orbulina suturalis–Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone (according to Cicha et al., 1975) and cover the interval of the Lower Lagenidae Zone–lowermost Upper Lagenidae Zone (Grill, 1941). The petrographic data from the tuffite allow correlation of the tuffite from the Kaczyce K2/07 borehole to the level of the Chełmek Tuffite Bed (Alexandrowicz, 1997) providing a regional correlation horizon for future studies.

Opis:
The post-evaporitic upper Badenian (Middle Miocene) succession of the Roztocze (marginal zone of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin) consists of shallow-marine sands and organodetrital deposits. The latter, although predominantly coarse-grained, include very rare and usually very thin intercalations of fine-grained, loamy material. A few such clay layers were sampled for their palynological content in quarries at Józefów (Józefów and Pardysówka) and Żelebsko. The clay samples yielded palynological organic matter, in contrast to organodetrital limestone samples, which were barren. The palynofacies composition, both presence/absence of land-derived material and the specific composition of aquatic material, are useful for the palaeoenvironmental reconstructions of sedimentary settings. During late Badenian time, the sedimentary setting of the deposits studied was characteri- zed by proximity to the shoreline, which, however, supplied limited input of terrestrial matter, and by restricted marine conditions caused by increased salinity. During the latest Badenian, water salinity presumably underwent a further increase, leading to the collapse of the dinoflagellate floras. The frequent occurrence of reworked Palaeogene dinoflagellate cysts in upper Badenian samples and their absence from the uppermost Badenian indicate variable intensity of erosion of the epicontinental Palaeogene strata during the Middle Miocene at Roztocze.

Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the palynological content of the Upper Badenian strata at Kudryntsi (western Ukraine) indicate that this succession was deposited in variable environments. The basal siliciclastic series shows a very low content of palynological organic matter and palynofacies, which indicate a restricted environment and/or unfavourable conditions for the palynomorph preservation. The presence of dinoflagellate cysts (and composition of their assemblages) in the upper part of organodetrital limestones and the overlying rhodoid limestones indicates a typical shelf environment. Taxonomically variable dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from particular samples reflect gradual environmental changes – from environments of slightly increased salinity of seawater (strata overlying the siliciclastic series) to open marine, more remote environments during deposition of the upper part of the section examined. The gradual deepening of the sea and decrease of salinity is supported also by the succession of foraminiferal assemblages, which undergo gradual changes from Elphidium spp. assemblages, through Miliolidae assemblage, Lobatula lobatula assemblage, Neoconorbina spp. assemblage to Cibicidoides assemblage. The Late Badenian foraminiferal assemblage from Kudryntsi contains two species common for the Sarmatian, i.e. Elphidium reginum and Elphidium koberi, the latter species known so far from the Sarmatian.

Opis:
The Upper Badenian and Sarmatian strata from thirteen wells situated in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep were petrographically analysed. The studies were performed using a polarizing microscope (standard petrographic analysis, cathodoluminescence studies – CL), SEM and EDS ISIS. Moreover, the XRD was conducted, isotopic ratios of light isotopes of carbon and oxygen in carbonate cements determined, and porosimetric measurements performed on selected samples of sandstones. Claystones, mudstones and sandstones were distinguished among the studied rocks. The sandstones were examined in great detail. The following sandstone varieties were distinguished: unequal-grained, fine-, and rare medium-grained. They are classified as arenites and subarkosic, locally sublithic and quartz wackes. Quartz and feldspars (K-feldspars, plagioclases) are main components of the grain fabric of mudstones and sandstones. Rock fragments (of sedimentary, less common effusive rocks, individual fragments of granitoids and/or metamorphic rocks) occur in the sandstones, too. Micas (mainly muscovite), glauconite, rare bioclasts, fine plant remnants, and accessory zircons are present. The cement is composed of allogenic-and authigenic clay minerals (illite, smectite, chlorites, kaolinite), carbonates (Fe-calcite, dolomite, ankerite), authigenic quartz and, sporadically, authigenic feldspar and anhydrite. Effects of diagenetic processes, mainly of mechanical compaction, cementation, dissolution, and less significant replacement and alteration have been recorded in the sediments studied. The compaction and cementation have almost an equal influence on reduction of porosity and permeability of the analysed rocks. Abundant sandstone packages, however, display very good reservoir properties (porosity amounts to 30%, and permeability is over 200 mD).

An abandoned ozokerite mine (= Ropyshche), where large mammal remains were discovered in the first half of the 20th century, is located in the Velyky Lukavets River valley covered with Quaternary sediments. The catchment area includes a flysch sequence unconformably overlain by salt-bearing Lower Miocene molasses of the Vorotyshcha beds. Both the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene are represented by: channel (gravel, sandy gravel) and overbank alluvium (mud, peat, biogenic mud) and colluvium (mud, sandy mud) as well as by mine wastes. The channel sediments are usually found in the lowest fragments of the borehole logs and represent mainly material deposited in the straight segments of meandering river-beds. The most common, fine-grained (Mz = 61.33 to 7.11 ?m), distal floodplain sediments are locally up to 10 m thick and are dominated by massive mud lithofacies, which contain frequent burrows, root hairs or slightly larger root traces and reed rods. These sediments are characterized by rather stable grain size distribution, quite monotonous mineral composition, presence of resistant heavy minerals and quartz grains with traces of chemical weathering. Angular grains with conchoidal fractures and sharp edges also occur. Therefore, textural features show that the main sources of material were, most probably, weathering crusts of various ages developed on relatively poorly lithologically diversified Carpathian flysch strata and on Miocene deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep. With time, an increase of the content of material originating from mechanical weathering (frost action) occurred in the floodplain deposits, which can be linked to an increase of climate severity and reduction of vegetation. However, these changes are not recorded in the deposits, which developed mostly in closed hollows and accumulated mainly from suspension or from low-energy flows. This calm sedimentation was periodically interrupted by supply of more coarse-grained material (sand, gravel). A distinct predominance of overbank deposits in the sections documented by their thickness suggests that the northward flow of the Velyky Lukavets River was blocked as a result of either neotectonic movements or damming of the valley by landslide tongues. From the lithological point of view, the most favourable conditions for preservation of large, extinct mammals still exist in the two selected areas, where the total thickness of Pleistocene muds exceeds 2 metres. The first area is located in the vicinity of boreholes Nos 2, 3, 21, 22, 23, 28, 30 33 and 36N, and the other, smaller one, is placed around borehole No. 42.
