The paper examines the contemporary discussion of the concept of ‘national hero’. As the subject of analysis interpretations of the role of Roman Dmowski, the leader of Polish nationalist movement in the fi rst half of 20th century, in the contemporary political and historical discussion in Poland was chosen. On that example the way in which political life is changing the previous assessment and meaning of the ‘national hero’ is observed.

Rozwój faszyzmu we Włoszech był uważnie obserwowany przez narodowych demokratów na czele z Romanem Dmowskim. Faszyzm jawił im się jako antyteza demoliberalnych i indywidualistycznych systemów odwracających się od narodowych wartości, chrześcijaństwa i tradycji. Narodowi demokraci postrzegali także faszyzm jako zaporę przed idącym ze Wschodu komunistycznym zagrożeniem. Jednakże sympatia starszego pokolenia działaczy polskiej narodowej prawicy dla faszyzmu włoskiego zaczęła maleć w latach trzydziestych XX wieku, gdyż ideologia Mussoliniego w zbyt dużym stopniu oparta była na totalizmie, dyktaturze i kulcie siły.
The progress of Italian fascism was being attentively observed by Polish national democrats. To them fascism was an antithesis of demo liberal and individualist systems turned against national notions, Christianity and tradition. National democrats also perceived fascism as a barrier against communist threat. However their sympathy for Italian fascism started to decline in the thirties due to the fact that Mussolini’s ideology was too much based on totalitarianism, dictatorship and the cult of power.

The purpose of this article is to show the actuality of the problems described in the work „Thoughts of a Modern Pole” by Roman Dmowski in the context of the thesis that the notion of strategic culture has been distorted in Poland after 1989 and that there is a lack of a real debate on the formation of Polish foreign policy. First, the author defined the concept of strategic culture itself. The term „strategy” was explained and characterized, along with its various elements. Special attention was also given to state strategy, for, as the author points out, states are the primary actors that shape international relations. Another element addressed by the author is cultural factors and their influence on the formation of state strategy. Among the most important elements the author mentions are historical experiences. Also important are the type of society and the outlook of a given society on the role of the state in international relations. The main part of the article is an attempt to analyze the problems with the formation of Polish strategic culture. The starting point is the considerations of Roman Dmowski contained in the work „Thoughts of a Modern Pole”. The first problem addressed in this article, is the issue of the lack of correlation, or even division between the elites of Polish society and the lower strata. The author puts forward the thesis that today’s social division, which appeared after 1989, is an extension of the historical division described by Roman Dmowski. The second issue addressed is the extreme approach to international politics present in Polish society. The author points out that our (i.e. Polish) historical defeats have led to a situation in which the view of Poland’s role in international relations is distorted. According to the author, just as at the time of the creation of the work „Thoughts of a Modern Pole,” today we also face two views of the Polish issue, which, according to the author, are wrong. The last problem the author draws attention to is the passivity of the Polish political elite. The author puts forward the thesis that the characteristic that links the elites of the Third Republic with those elites described by Roman Dmowski is passivity. In order to support this thesis, the article points out the manifestations of this passivity using examples of the Third Republic’s actions in the international arena. The author also points out the problem of the lack of search for autonomy in the international policy of the Third Republic, which, according to the author of the article, is the result of passivity. The article concludes with the statement that Roman Dmowski can be called „a man of our time”, because, according to the author, most of the problems described by Dmowski are still present in today’s socio-political life.

Abstract: Understanding the essence of national character is necessary to correct understanding of social reality. Due to various determinants (external and internal), people develop at different rates, intervals and directions. The character – a set of psychological, spiritual and mental traits, which are revealed in the way of behavior, being, life and functioning – reflects the true nature of man. It is also an asset of innate norms and attitudes that constitute the foundation of human personality. The author of the article concludes that the nature of the individual units reflects the nature of entire nations. It is their nature that determines the nations to select the civilization course. In the article, the author presents selected historical syntheses (characteristic of particular ages), then confronts them with Roman Dmowski’s political thought, which – according to the author – manifests itself in timelessness and recent nature of its assumptions.
Zrozumienie istoty charakteru narodowego jest konieczne dla człowieka do prawidłowego pojmowania rzeczywistości społecznej. Ze względu na różne czynniki (zewnętrzne, wewnętrzne) ludzie rozwijają się w niejednorodnym tempie, z indywidualną częstotliwością i w odmiennych kierunkach. To właśnie charakter – zespół cech psychicznych, duchowych, mentalnych, które ujawniają się w sposobie zachowania, bycia, życia i funkcjonowania – odzwierciedlają prawdziwe ludzkie oblicze i jego naturę. Charakter to również zbiór wrodzonych norm i postaw, które stanowią fundament osobowości człowieka. Autor artykułu doszedł do wniosku, że charakter pojedynczych jednostek odzwierciedla charakter całych narodów. To właśnie determinuje narody do obrania kursu w rozwoju cywilizacyjnym. W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane syntezy historyczne charakterystyczne dla danych epok, następnie skonfrontowano je z myślą narodową Romana Dmowskiego, która zdaniem autora, przejawia się ponadczasowością i aktualnością w swoich założeniach.
