Emergetism is a theory which explains the mechanism of evolutionary development of nature by stipulating that in complex natural systems on the higher levels of complexity there appear some functions and properties that can not be reduced to and accounted for by functions and properties of the lower levels of complexity. It is therefore the theory of emergence – which stands for some special way the complex systems arise (emerge) from a multiplicity of their relatively simply components. The idea of evolutionary emergentism appears in the philosophical writings of Joseph Życiński in the context of a discussion on the possibility of creating a interpretation of evolutionary processes in which biological theory of evolution could be combined in a coherent way with a theological doctrine about God, the creator of the universe. This paper presents the main ideas and opinions Życiński formulated about this theory; the first part of it contains some basic characterization of emergetnism, the second one compares the notions of emergence and of supervenience; the third one concerns some theological interpretation of this two notions.

Even a preliminary review of philosophical works left by Archbishop Joseph Życiński reveals that he had a clearly outlined philosophical program. Unfortunately, his premature death has not allowed him to fully implement it. His early fascination with science resulted in his original approach to philosophy of science. Rational methods employed by science turned his attention to rationality as an ontological property of the world. This, in turn, led him to an idea of a renewal of metaphysics (although he never used this expression). New style of metaphysics should consist in maintaining traditional 'big questions of philosophy' but treating them with more extensive help of analytic method. This approach should also elaborate an analysis of mutual relations between various philosophical systems. Życiński believed that Whitehead's style of doing philosophy could provide an inspiration to this kind of renewed metaphysics. After becoming a bishop his interests turned to more practical issues related to the contemporary increase of irrationality. He extensively wrote against postmodernism and religious fundamentalism, especially as opposing biological theory of evolution.

The Code of Canon Law gives the definition of a presbyteral council and declares: „In each diocese a presbyteral council is to be established, that is, a group of priests which, representing the presbyterium, is to be like a senate of the bishop and which assists the bishop in the governance of the diocese according to the norm of law to promote as much as possible the pastoral good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him”. The Fourth Synod of Tarnow Diocese reminds that a Diocese Presbyteral Council is as if the bishop’s senate with its own statues; a team of priests representing all clergy of the diocese, both diocesan and from religious orders. During the time when the diocese was led by bishop Życiński, there have been two terms of the Presbyteral Council with elections in 1990 and 1995. The article analyses the topics debated over by the Presbyteral Council between 1990 and 1997. Some of the following items were on the Council’s agenda: priests’ retirement age, spiritual formation of the lay members of the church, missions.

In this paper we discuss the idea of theology of science, which is understood as a new branch of the- ology concerned with the problems arising in the context of natural sciences. Theology of science has been developed since 1980s. The authors of this concept are Michał Heller and Józef Życiński – philosophers involved in discussions between science and religion, who tried to find a new common area to develop this dialogue. The aim of the paper is to present the concept of theology of science in the historical and problematic perspective, taking into account the various challenges and research perspectives faced by this concept.

In the article the views of Archbishop Józef Życiński on the relationship between nature and mathematics are outlined. Życiński states that formal structures create the basic level of nature. This enables him to explain the effectiveness of mathematics in the scientific research of the material world. He therefore accepts Platonism and the thesis of mathematicity of nature. In the article some of the difficulties of this concept are pointed out.
W artykule zostały naszkicowane poglądy ks. abpa Józefa Życińskiego na temat relacji między przyrodą a matematyką. Życiński stwierdza, że podstawowy poziom rzeczywistości przyrodniczej tworzą struktury formalne. To pozwala mu wyjaśnić skuteczność matematyki w badaniach świata materialnego. Przyjmuje zatem platonizm i tezę o matematyczności przyrody. W artykule wskazano na niektóre trudności takiej koncepcji.

Postać ks. Wojciecha Życińskiego SDB zasługuje na wspomnienie. Jego droga naukowa naznaczona jest szczególnym umiłowaniem Kościoła i Maryi – Matki Bożej, które zaowocowało naukowymi opracowaniami z zakresu mariologii i eklezjologii. Interdyscyplinarność tych prac wyznaczyła ważną perspektywę badawczą dla teologii. Z dużym poświęceniem realizował swoją teologiczną misję w nauczaniu i popularyzowaniu doktryny teologicznej. Oprócz pracy badawczo-dydaktycznej zaangażowany był w działalność organizacyjną na Uniwersytecie Papieskim Jana Pawła II w Krakowie oraz w wielu komisjach kościelnych. Ksiądz Wojciech Życiński pozostawił trwały ślad w teologii, a zwłaszcza w mariologii polskiej.
The Person of Rev. Prof. Wojciech Życiński deserves a commemoration. His scientific journey is marked with the particular love of the Church and the Blessed Virgin Mary. His works on Mariology and ecclesiology are worthy of special attention. Their interdisciplinary character has set up an important research perspective in theology. Fr. Życiński carried out his theological mission both in teaching and popularizing the theological doctrine. In addition to his research and teaching duties he was engaged in the organizational activities at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow and was a member of a number of ecclesiastical commissions. He has made a solid contribution into theology with the Polish Mariology occupying a dominant position.

The paper outlines and discusses the major tenets of moderately pluralistic methodology. The latter is juxtaposed to J. Życiński’s principle of natural interdisciplinarity. It instantiates scientific pluralism as a domain-specific agenda for research. The symbolic and causal understanding are integrated in this methodological conception by means of a specific kind of counterfactual reasoning, which is coined the delimiting counterfactual. It makes the moderately pluralistic methodology applicable to non-experimental research.
Artykuł prezentuje i omawia zasadnicze założenia koncepcji umiarkowanie pluralistycznej metodologii. Ta ostatnia jest zbieżna z J. Życińskiego zasadą naturalności interdyscyplinarnej. Reprezenuje ona szeroko rozumiany nurt pluralizmu naukowego w zakresie sposobu prowadzenia badań w danej dziedzinie. W tej koncepcji połączone są dwa poziomy rozumienia symboliczny i przyczynowy za pomocą swoistego rodzaju wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych, określonych tu jako rozgraniczających wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych. Dzięki nim umiarkowanie pluralistyczna metodologia ma zastosowanie do badań nieeksperymentalnych.

In this paper I try to present some main origins, varieties, motives and ideas of the philosophical and theological movement called “the panentheistic turn”. Particular attention is paid to the Ch. Hartshorne’s combinatorial analyses (based on “the law of polarity”) and to the J. Życiński’s conception of “the field of rationality”. I distinguish five forms or domains of the contemporary panentheism. The first of them — the linguistic one — uses the preposition in or spatial metaphors to express the relation between God and the world. The second — the (inter)cultural panen- theism — is the result of searching for a common theology to many different religions. The third type — the Christian panentheism – interprets some main dogmas of Christian faith in the spirit of kenotic theology. At an end the ontological panentheism can be defined as the metaphysics (of God and world) emerged from the German idealism and the process philosophy. Its newest kind is the scientific panentheism based on the idea of emergence. After these distinctions I compare the ontological panentheism with the classical theism. In my opinion there are some irremovable differences between both options. I also defend the thesis that the main arguments given by the panentheists against the classical theism do not constitute the sufficient reasons to prefer their position.

Years ago Archbishop Prof. Józef Życiński put forward his own model of cognitive integration that takes into account the sacred, the beauty of nature, modern scientific discoveries as well as philosophical and theological theses. In this intellectual undertaking, bringing together in a single perspective poetic imagery and the Christian affirmation of nature, openness to new ideas of science and the quest for a new metaphysics, an important role was to be played by the Christian interpretation of Darwinism. The task still awaits realization. However, it seems that the Author’s death set in motion contrary tendencies. The article presents a brief overview of contemporary tensions between Darwinism and the Church in the context of the integration model proposed by Józef Życiński and signalizes these contrary trends. Outlining, as the title suggests, principles of dialogue, it points to modern man’s ambivalent attitude to cognition and nature as well as to the need to take into account the perspective of Fides et ratio, so vital in the teaching of Pope John Paul II, along with the so called criterion of “Christian rationality” that arises from it. Of help in this task may be further search for the truth about the world recorded in two books: the Book of Nature and the Book of Revelation as well as efforts to develop appropriate methodology of reading them.
Przed laty ks. abp prof. Józef Życiński zaproponował własny model integracji poznawczej uwzględniający zarówno sacrum i piękno przyrody, współczesne odkrycia nauki, jak i tezy filozoficzne i teologiczne. W owym projekcie badawczym, gdzie w jednej perspektywie łączyły się metaforyka poezji i chrześcijańska afirmacja przyrody, otwarcie na nowe idee nauki i poszukiwanie nowej metafizyki, istotną rolę miała spełniać chrześcijańska interpretacja darwinizmu. Zadanie ciągle czeka na realizację. Wydaje się jednak, że śmierć Autora uruchomiła tendencje przeciwne. Artykuł prezentuje krótki zarys współczesnych napięć między darwinizmem a Kościołem w kontekście modelu integracji zaproponowanego przez Józefa Życińskiego oraz sygnalizuje owe przeciwne tendencje. Sugerując, zapowiedziane w tytule, zasady dialogu wskazuje m.in. na ambiwalentny stosunek współczesnego człowieka do poznania i do przyrody oraz potrzebę uwzględnienia perspektywy Fides et ratio, tak istotnej dla nauczania papieża Jana Pawła II, razem z wynikającym z niej tzw. kryterium „chrześcijańskiej racjonalności”. Pomocą w tym zadaniu może być dalsze poszukiwanie prawdy o świecie zapisanej w dwu księgach: Księdze Przyrody i Księdze Objawienia oraz wypracowanie właściwej metodyki ich czytania.

The dialogue between science and religion held by Józef Życiński presents a vision, in which the two disciplines exist complementarily and complete each other. In his opinion the basis of the dialogue is a reliable methodology, in which the very fundamental issue is methodological naturalism. Życiński suggests that apparent conflicts stem from incorrect interpretation of the Holy Bible or fundamentalist understanding of science. He therefore provides the right, in his opinion, interpretation of the Book of Bible and the Book of Nature. Józef Życiński demonstrates that in Christianity we deal with affirmation of rationality. This, among others, is the reason we should talk about Christian sources and inspirations of contemporary science.
Dialog nauka-religia, prowadzony przez Życińskiego ukazuje wizję, w której komplementarnie istnieją, dopełniają się dziedziny nauki i religii. Podstawą do dialogu jest solidna metodologia, w której kluczowym zagadnieniem jest naturalizm metodologiczny. Życiński sugeruje, iż pozorne konflikty są wyrazem niewłaściwej interpretacji Pisma Świętego, bądź fundamentalistycznych sposobów rozumienia nauki. Daje zatem właściwą, jego zdaniem, interpretację Księgi Pisma Świętego i Księgi Przyrody. Ukazuje, iż w chrześcijaństwie mamy do czynienia z afirmacją racjonalności. Między innymi to powoduje, iż należy mówić o chrześcijańskich źródłach i inspiracjach współczesnej nauki.

In the two-volume work Theism and the Analytical Philosophy (1985; 1988a) Joseph Życiński took up the challenge of renewing Christian metaphysics so that it could appear as a full-fledged partner in the dialogue with other streams of contemporary philosophy. This renewal should use two sources: the methodological principles of analytic philosophy, especially its philosophy of language, and certain elements of Whitehead’s process philosophy. This study presents a critical reconstruction of Życiński’s arguments contained in the first two chapters of (1985), which are devoted to the problem of language. Main results of this part of Życiński’s work are negative, that is, they refute the arguments and interpretations of those analytical philosophers who show the meaninglessness of the theistic language or try to assimilate it to other standard languages, depriving it of a reference to the transcendent reality. How can a positive part of the Życiński program be developed? It seems that only by formulating specific problems in the field of philosophy of God, or even theology, and choosing the right linguistic tools to drill down on a given problem and seek its solution. This is in line with Wittgenstein’s concept of language games. Życiński tries to do this in (1988a). Życiński turned out to be a precursor of nowadays increasingly developing analytical theology.
