    The worship of the Virgin Mary exists in the Church from the very beginning and takes various forms. Religious songs deserve a special attention in this regard. The emerging chants in honour of the Mother of Christ were disseminated in many collections of church songs. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the most significant ones were songbooks edited by Fr. M.M. Mioduszewski and Fr. J. Siedlecki, from the Congregation of the Mission founded by St. Vincent de Paul. The subject of this study was to show the changes that take place in Marian songs throughout the 19th and 20th centuries based on the examples taken from the indicated songbooks. The study has revealed that the number of Marian songs in the subsequent editions of Mioduszewski’s and Siedlecki’s songbook during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was gradually increased (with the simultaneous removal of some of the compositions that did not meet the requirements of liturgical suitability or „vitality” and placing new songs). Marian songs were subjected to all kind of changes. The modifications included a melodic layer (single notes, fragments or entire melodies), metrorhythmics (removal of the dotted rhythm, grinding of rhythmic values, changes in the time signature). Songs in honour of the Mother of Christ were also often transposed. The changes also appeared in the text layer (removal or addition of subsequent verses, transcriptions, archaisms removal). It is to be hoped that this study will contribute to further research on the Polish songs in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the aspect of their transformations.

    Podjęte badania komparatystyczne dotyczą repertuaru pieśni adwentowych i kolęd zawartego w dwóch wybranych śpiewnikach. W ciągu niemal 200 lat dokonano w pieśniach wielu zmian tekstowych. Obejmują one zmianę szyku, wymianę wielu słów na inne, zastępowanie nowym brzmieniem całych zwrotów i wersów oraz korekty w liczbie zwrotek. Zauważa się przede wszystkim tendencje do uwspółcześniania tekstów dawnych i redukcję strof. Zachodzące procesy nie są wynikiem naturalnej ewolucji języka, ale rezultatem ingerencji pojedynczych osób. Z wieloma skutkami zaistniałych interwencji trudno się zgodzić. Skalę przeobrażeń wybranej grupy pieśni i wiążące wnioski można będzie w sposób pełniejszy określić dopiero po przeprowadzeniu studiów porównawczych dotyczących melodyki i rytmiki pieśni.
    The comparative research undertaken concerns the repertoire of Advent songs and Christmas carols contained in two selected songbooks. Over the course of almost 200 years many textual changes have been made to the songs. These include changing the order, exchanging many words for others, replacing whole phrases and verses with new wording, and corrections in the number of stanzas. The tendency to modernise old texts and to reduce stanza is particularly noticeable. These processes are not the result of the natural evolution of language, but the result of the intervention of individuals. It is difficult to agree with many of the consequences of these interventions. The scale of transformation of the selected song group and the conclusions can only be more fully determined after a comparative study of the melody and rhythm of the songs.

    The author analises lexical and semantical archaisms, taken from Śpiewnik kościelny [Church Songbook] by reverend J. Siedlecki (see abbreviation Sdl). The words have been chosen on the basis of Słownik języka polskiego [Polish Language Dictionary] edited by W. Doroszewski (see abbreviation SJP). In the mentioned Dictionary words that appear in the songs and the words’ explanations are qualified as old-fashioned meaning that a contemporary Pole of average education would not understand them or archaic meaning known only to the eldest generation. The author takes into consideration words that are not mentioned in the Polish Language Dictionary, he also indicates if the word has been mentioned in Słownik języka polskiego [Polish Language Dictionary] edited by S. B. Linde (abbreviation L)

    The Church Songbook by Rev. Fr. Jan Siedlecki is not a homogenous publication in terms of its 41 editions over 140 years. From the beginning, it contained both the old and the new songs. The author did not pay too much attention to the documentation of their origins and neither did Rev. Fr. Michał Marcin Mioduszewski CM from whose collection Rev. Fr. Siedlecki borrowed the old songs. The situation changed along with the new editor-in-chief, Rev. Fr. Wendelin Świerczek CM. It was him who raised the bar to a new high in the 1928 anniversary edition of the critical edition of the songbook, which he oversaw until the end of his life (he passed away in 1974). The shape of various editions was influenced by changing editors. In the 41st edition of Rev. Fr. Siedlecki’s songbook from 2015, there are 243 songs for which the source are the previous editions. In addition, for 170 songs, the source are Fr. Rev. Mioduszewski’s songbooks. 102 songs in this edition of the songbook have been printed for the first time. The other ones originate from other sources. From this simple analysis, it follows that for 515 songs out of 840 in the 41st edition, the source is the songbook of Fr. Rev. Siedlecki or the songbook of his predecessor, Fr. Rev. Mioduszewski. Many church songs sung in Poland owe their functioning to the songbook of Fr. Rev. Jan Siedlecki (his individual editions). Thus, the decision of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate, by which the 41st edition was approved as the Polish national liturgical songbook, has to be recognised as historical justice or, if you will, a natural consequence.

    W zasobach Archiwum Zgromadzenia Księży Misjonarzy na Stradomiu w Krakowie pod sygnaturą Muzyka 15 dostępne są dwa arkusze rękopisu nutowego z XIX w. zawierającego unicki repertuar pieśniowy. Źródło to pochodzi prawdopodobnie ze zbiorów domu Zgromadzenia Księży Misjonarzy przy Kościele św. Krzyża w Warszawie, przekazanych ze stolicy do krakowskich misjonarskich archiwaliów zapewne po kasacji tej wspólnoty zakonnej w Królestwie Polskim, która nastąpiła w roku 1864. W omawianym rękopisie nutowym zachowały się wpisane anonimowo przekazy melodii oraz teksty w języku polskim pierwszych zwrotek 7 pieśni religijnych (utwory maryjne, ku czci świętych, przygodne) bazyliańskiego misjonarza o. Tymoteusza Szczurowskiego (1740–1812). Dzięki zachowanym w źródle inskrypcjom wiadomo, że pieśni Szczurowskiego były wykonywane na przełomie lat trzydziestych i czterdziestych XIX w. przez warszawskich bazylianów, a także przez unickiego duchownego o. Pawła Szymańskiego (1782–1852), gdy w latach 1837–41 był profesorem Rzymskokatolickiej Akademii Duchownej w Warszawie. Linie melodyczne siedmiu pieśni Szczurowskiego pochodzące z rękopiśmiennych nutowych arkuszy Muzyka 15 pokrywają się z melodiami ich drukowanych przekazów opublikowanymi przez ks. Michała Marcina Mioduszewskiego CM (1787–1868) w Dodatku do Śpiewnika kościelnego (Kraków 1842) i Dodatku III do Śpiewnika kościelnego (Lipsk 1853). Omawiany w artykule rękopis zawierający nutowe przekazy polskojęzycznych pieśni z repertuaru unickiego z dużym prawdopodobieństwem mógł być sporządzony w środowisku warszawskich misjonarzy. Ocalały misjonarski rękopis Muzyka 15 umożliwia obecnie stwierdzenie faktu recepcji utworów unickiego autora, o. Szczurowskiego w środowiskach rzymskokatolickich dziewiętnastowiecznej Warszawy, a także przynosi nowe informacje na temat ówczesnych wykonawców jego pieśni w stolicy Królestwa Polskiego.
    Held in the Archive of the Congregation of the Mission, in Kraków’s Stradom district (shelf-mark Muzyka 15) are two sheets of a nineteenth-century music manuscript containing Uniate (Eastern Catholic) songs. The source probably originates from the collection belonging to the house of the Congregation of the Mission at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, which was sent from the capital to the Kraków missionaries’ archive most likely following the dissolution of this congregation in the Kingdom of Poland, which took place in 1864. Inscribed anonymously in this source are the melodies and Polish-language texts of the first stanzas of seven religious songs (Marian songs, songs to the cult of saints, and przygodne songs for the Ordinary Time in the liturgical year) composed by the Basilian missionary Father Tymoteusz Szczurowski (1740–1812). Thanks to inscriptions preserved in the source, we know that Szczurowski’s songs were performed in the late 1830s and early 1840s by Warsaw’s Basilian monks as well as by the Uniate clergyman Father Paweł Szymański (1782–1852), when he was a professor of the Imperial Roman Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw (1837–41). The melodic lines of Szczurowski’s seven songs from the handwritten sheets of Muzyka 15 are the same as those printed by Father Michał Marcin Mioduszewski, CM (1787–1868) in Dodatek do Śpiewnika kościelnego [Supplement to the church songbook] (Kraków 1842) and Dodatek III do Śpiewnika kościelnego [Third supplement to the church songbook] (Leipzig 1853). The manuscript discussed in this paper, containing the music and words of Polish-language songs from the Uniate repertoire, is very likely to have been compiled in the environment of the Warsaw Congregation of the Mission. The surviving missionary manuscript Muzyka 15 enables us to confirm the reception of the Uniate Father Szczurowski’s output in the Roman Catholic environments of nineteenth-century Warsaw. It also provides us with new information concerning the performers of Szczurowski’s songs in the then capital of the (Congress) Kingdom of Poland.
