Opis:: Découvert et partiellement excavé pour la première fois en 1904, le site des Kellia, les Cellules, un des plus vastes ensembles monastiques d’Egypte, ne fut réellement identifié définitivement qu’en 1960; fouillées à partir de 1965, les Cellules n’existent plus; les publications et les objets conservés au Musée Copte du Vieux-Caire témoignent de leur richesse passée. On trouvera ici un bref rappel chronologique des fouilles (égytiennes, françaises et suisses) et des principales découvertes; sont illustrées une des premières peintures et une mosaïque dont les meilleurs parallèles furent découverts à Faras par les équipes polonaises; c’est du moins une hypothèse qui mériterait, je pense, des recherches ultérieures.

Opis:: The present paper focuses on relationships and tensions between literary and scientific discourses in the following editions of Oriental travel accounts by Pierre Belon du Mans. This French traveller, naturalist and doctor travelled across Greece, Egypt, Jerusalem and Turkey between 1546 and 1549 and, afterwards, published three volumes of Les Observations de plusieurs singularitez et choses memorables, trouvées en Grece, Asie, Judée, Egypte, Arabie, et autres pays estranges. Whereas in the first edition (1553), he put emphasis to dynamics of narration and differentiation between his own adventures and those of other travellers, in the second one (1555), he introduced some major changes, which were to underline the scientific nature of his trip. Those changes show, on one hand, the pressions the author underwent when he wanted to meet the scientific requirements of his times and, on the other hand, a kind of crisis he experienced being trapped between literary and scientific discourses and their stylistics.

Opis:: The present paper analyses Carnets du voyage en Égypte by a French painter and writer, Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), using the concept of autobiogeography. The concept allows to examine how the author of a geographical description may be seen throughout this description and how s/he is influenced by the space. The paper argues that the personality of Fromentin emerges from his travel notes even though they are focused mainly on the description of the Egyptian space and the forms “I” or “we” appear there rarely. Three aspects of Fromentin’s personality may be seen through the analyses of his geographical descriptions of Egypt: the Orientalist painter enthusiastic towards the space; the traveler marked by his previous travels to Algeria who in Egyptian spaces sees Algerian ones; and the man who feels old and tired, refuses to discover the Egyptian space and who just wants to come back home.

Opis:: According to Stanisław Lorentz, the collections of Michel Tyszkiewicz, enriched by his excavations in Egypt and Italy, undoubtedly “belonged to the more valuable European collections created in the second half of the 19th century”. After his first journey to Egypt, Tyszkiewicz, enlivened with a passion for excavations, first lived in Naples and then settled permanently in Rome in 1865. As the political situation changed there after 1870 and the new government restrained issuing permits, he started applying for excavation permits in his estate of Birże, in Lithuania (1871). Later, in 1894, he also tried to obtain excavation permits at Olbia, in Southern Russia, but this time unsuccessfully. His unpublished letters to the famous German scholar Wilhelm Froehner (1834–1925), now in the Goethe und Schiller Archiv in Weimar, throw a new light on the discoveries that took place in Boscoreale and in Lake Nemi and on his purchases there, as well as on his great enterprise in relation to the Satricum excavations in 1896, from which he was excluded after discovering the trace of “thousands of different votive objects”.
