    The article presents another volume “Slavic Linguistic Atlas”, “Personal Characteristics”. The majority of works on this topic have often been atomic – both in the reflection of some aspects and in terms of linguistic geography. In contrast to them the Atlas materials allow to expand its research and to come into cultural dialectology which aims at the reconstruction of the Slavic “living antiquity”. The author pays attention to the fact that the Atlas maps reflect lexical synonymy in various ways: some of them show unity in comprehension of these or those nominated features whereas others demonstrate the high grade of variability. As a result the semantic density of maps is different. Using the criteria of word number per meaning item, the author reveals the areas of “high language voltage” and proves that they have come from different cultural development of the concrete meanings in different Slavic dialects. The author thinks that the difference in map lexical density proves different cultural socialization of human being in different Slavic dialects which has leaded to their differentiation. Thus the maps of “Slavic Linguistic Atlas” along with dialect differentiation illustrate cultural differentiation of the Slavic dialects.

    The article refers to the hypotheses concerning the evolution of language presented in an article by Magdalena Danielewiczowa and entitled What is language needed for? What is necessary in language? The hypotheses proposed by Danielewiczowa have far-reaching methodological consequences for cultural studies, especially those that strike a balance between general linguistics, linguistic semantics, anthropological linguistics, and philosophy of language. The organisation of research on cultural phenomena requires methodological planning enabling the minimum conditions of modern research methods to be met. These conditions are: (1) the definition of cognitive goals; (2) the determination of methods for the identification of variables (methodology); (3) research hypotheses formulated in affirmative (not interrogative or negative) sentences; (4) the existence of a relationship between the logical or analytical implications of variables and hypotheses; (5) the negation of hypotheses (counter-argumentation); (6) the substantiation of hypotheses. In this article I develop Danielewiczowa’s remarks on ways of using the term evolution, while also indicating the consequences of disregarding the conditions of correct reasoning within the framework of the research programme called anthropology of the word.

    According to the author, Cultural Linguistics (necessarily capitalised) is a multidisciplinary area of research on the relationhsip between language, culture, and cognition. Following Palmer, the author locates Cultural Linguistics in the vicinity of cognitive linguistics (with its image schemas, conceptual metaphors, and cognitive structures) and linguistic anthropology (which includes Boasian linguistics, ethnosemantics, and ethnography of speaking). The common platform for Cultural Linguistics, linguistic anthropology, and cognitive linguistics is an exploration of cultural models, which belong to the broader category of cultural conceptualisations. Recently Cultural Linguistics has incorporated insights from such areas as complexity theory or the notion of distributed cognition, enriching its own understanding of cultural cognition. Three areas of application of Cultural Linguistics are discussed: investigation of world Englishes, diagnosing causes of misunderstandings in intercultural communication, and identifiying cases of linguistic manipulation in the use of metaphors in political discourse.
    Lingwistyka kulturowa (ang. Cultural Linguistics) to według autora multidyscyplinarny obszar badań nad relacją między językiem, kulturą i poznaniem. Za Palmerem autor sytuuje  lingwistykę kulturową w bliskości lingwistyki kognitywnej (która operuje pojęciami  schematów wyobrażeniowych,  metafor pojęciowych i struktur poznawczych)  i antropologii lingwistycznej (w ramach której mieści się  lingwistyka w stylu Franza Boasa, etnosemantyka i etnografia mówienia). Wspólną płaszczyznę zainteresowań lingwistyki kulturowej, antropologii lingwistycznej i lingwistyki kognitywnej tworzą modele kulturowe przynależne do szerszej kategorii konceptualizacji kulturowych. Ostatnio lingwistyka kulturowa korzysta z nowych podejść badawczych, takich jak teoria systemów złożonych lub koncepcja poznania rozproszonego i wzbogaca swoje rozumienie poznania kulturowego.  Autor  w kolejności omawia  trzy obszary zastosowań lingwistyki kulturowej: do badania  odmian angielszczyzny, do diagnozowania przyczyn  nieporozumień w komunikacji międzykulturowej, do ujawniania manipulacji językowej w sposobie posługiwania się metaforami w dyskursie politycznym.

    Microtoponyms as a way of creating folk cultural places – the approach of linguistic anthropologyThe paper deals with selected issues of linguistic anthropology with the purpose to examine a few theoretical assumptions of its methodology, taking into account Keith H. Basso’s study on the creation of cultural places as a result of linguistic activity. The research is based on the empirical material obtained from Polish native speakers, namely, folk tales of the residents of the Augustów County. Mikrotoponimy jako sposób kreowania ludowych miejsc kulturowych – podejście antropologii lingwistycznejTematyka artykułu dotyczy wybranych zagadnień antropologii lingwistycznej. Celem opracowania jest rekonesans głównych założeń metodologicznych antropologii języka z uwzględnieniem badań Keitha H. Basso z zakresu „tworzenia miejsc kulturowych” w rezultacie działalności językowej. Jako materiał empiryczny wykorzystano wypowiedzi polskich natywnych użytkowników języka – opowieści etniczne mieszkańców powiatu augustowskiego.

    W artykule scharakteryzowana jest relacja między tzw. dojmującym milczeniem (indywidualnym i zbiorowym) a nie-milczeniem, rozumianym jako zerwanie milczenia. Z tej perspektywy przedstawione są trzy zagadnienia: problem współczesnego kryzysu słowa (którego początki sięgają przełomu dziewiętnastego i dwudziestego wieku); kwestie napięć między milczeniem a językiem w świetle „zwrotu lingwistycznego” w drugiej połowie dwudziestego wieku i jego konsekwencjami w humanistyce; związek między milczeniem a podejściem nieantropocentrycznym w badaniach kulturowych.
    The article presents the characteristics of the relationship between the so-called piercing silence (individual and collective) and non-silence, which is understood as the breaking of silence. Three issues are focused on from this perspective: the problem of the contemporary word crisis (which dates back as far as the turn of the 19th century); the issues of the tensions between silence and language in view of the ‘linguistic turn’ in the second half of the 20th century and its consequences in the humanities; the connection between silence and the non-anthropocentric approach in cultural studies.

    The idea of an anthropologist as a transparent subject in the epistemological process was challenged by the “linguistic turn.” This new approach led to the critical analysis focused on anthropological discourse and the way of anthropologist’s epistemological experience reconstruction. The critique was not intrinsic. It established reflection on the researcher’s role and – as a consequence – enforced notice of the ontoepistemological limitations of the process. The paper is focused on the analysis of selected elements of this critique, in particular, the critique of “realistic” discourse of so-called modernist anthropology and reconstruction of the research according to the local and translocal cognitive structures. The New Critique showed how the researcher is entangled as a subject of cognition and introduced the “native” as a subject in discourse. This change, that took over 30 years, led the author to an attempt to transfer some elements of anthropologist’s epistemological self-reflection to sociology.
    W okresie „zwrotu lingwistycznego” zakwestionowano modernistyczną ideę badacza jako transparentnego podmiotu poznania, co otworzyło drogę do krytycznej analizy antropologicznego dyskursu i sposobu rekonstruowania w nim epistemologicznego doświadczenia antropologa. Analiza krytyczna nie okazała się celem samym w sobie, ale przyczyniła się do wytworzenia refleksji nad rolą badacza i w konsekwencji do wypracowania podejścia uwzględniającego ontoepistemologiczne ograniczenia w badaniu. W artykule zostaje podjęta analiza wybranych elementów tej krytyki, w szczególnośc„realistycznego” dyskursu modernistycznej antropologii oraz rekonstruowania obrazu pola badawczego zgodnie z transkulturowymi i lokalnymi strukturami pojęciowymi. Nowa krytyka, pokazując uwikłanie badacza jako podmiotu poznającego, jednocześnie powoli wprowadziła „tubylca”, podmiot badany, jako równorzędnego partnera w dyskursie. Ta zmiana, która zajęła antropologii ponad trzydzieści lat, staje się punktem wyjścia dla rozważań nad wartością omawianych elementów antropologicznej refleksji dla analizy doświadczeń epistemologicznych w socjologii.

    Opis:
        This article discusses the modes of defining cultural content in teaching Polish as a foreign language. It proposes strategies for introducing cultural knowledge and knowledge about culture in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language. It seems appropriate to offer a division into: The cultural semantics of lexemes, set phrases and expressions; The culture (meaning the correct use) of expression and the linguistic norm; and Culture content and areas conveyed to foreigners through the language they are learning. This discussion fits the debate regarding the language which we teach to foreigners. In it, researchers have offered examples of semantic distortions (mostly shifts), and the dangers of private or rather extra-curricular linguistic contact with a language’s native users. It also carries reflections on linguistic regionalisation and its presence in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language.  
    Artykuł dotyczy sposobów definiowania treści kulturowych w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego. Są w nim zaproponowane strategie wprowadzania wiedzy kulturowej i wiedzy o kulturze w praktykę glottodydaktyczną. Wskazane jest (istotne zdaniem autora) rozróżnienie na:1. semantykę kulturową leksemów, zwrotów i wyrażeń;2. kulturę wypowiedzi i normę językową;3. treści i obszary kulturowe przekazywane cudzoziemcom za pośrednictwem nauczanego języka. Rozważania wpisują się w nurt dyskusji dotyczącej języka, którego nauczamy cudzoziemców. Przywoływane są w nim przykłady zaburzeń (zwłaszcza przesunięć) semantycznych, niebezpieczeństwa wynikające z prywatnych, a raczej pozalekcyjnych kontaktów językowych z jego naturalnymi użytkownikami. Zawarto również refleksję dotyczącą regionalizacji językowych i ich obecności w praktyce glottodydaktycznej.
