Opis:
Recently there is a big discussion about the sense and nonsense of what we called the former philology, especially in the field of German studies. The author tries to focus his consideration of German literature on the importance of studying German literature in future and what this subject can get a special use for certain sustainability and facilities. He points out some ways in which we can deal with that in future as students, but as teachers too.

Medieval German literature, Poland, presence and future of early German literature, academic curricula
Opis:
The German literary heritage from the period between Middle Ages and Modern Times (8th-17th cc.) has an unquestionably high status in German Studies in the German-speaking countries. Hence, German Medieval Studies are widely acknowledged as an indisputably vital research domain. Austrian, German and Swiss academic institutions recognize German Medieval Studies as one of the three main autonomous components in German Studies – the other two being modern German Literature and Linguistics. This division is also mirrored in the academic curricula and the regulations concerning the scope of academic examinations. German Medieval Studies have a completely different status in countries other than the above, including Poland. In Poland, there can be no mention of institutional equality between the three components listed above. As can be inferred from the changes affecting the majority of programmes offered by the Institutes of German all around Poland, academic curricula seem to increasingly marginalize the early German literary legacy. The knowledge about the Medieval, Modern or Baroque texts is presented mostly, and sometimes exclusively, through curricular lectures. In some academic programmes, literature starts with the 18th century texts onward. This marginalized status of German Medieval Studies in the Polish Academia manifests itself correspondingly in the two branches of research: specializations and publications. Drawing upon the relevant German and English-language literature, the author of this paper would like to convince the Polish milieus of the specialists in German Studies of how important Old German literature is. The author also puts forward a postulate that in both the scientific and the didactic discourse within German Studies, the early German literary legacy should be given the position it rightly deserves.

The paper deals with the broad concept of strangeness in the literary work of Anna Mitgutsch, a contemporary Austrian writer. The topic of strangeness is a keynote in her rich literary output. Mitgutsch’s experience of being abroad (travelling to the Middle East and south-east Asia, living and working in Israel, England, Korea and The USA) is reflected in such novels as Das andere Gesicht, In fremden Städten or Abschied von Jerusalem. Her characters are nomads, people looking for identity and homeland, trying to escape alienation. The feeling of being a stranger is also present in their relations with their loved ones (Die Annäherung).

That is the way the people not only meet themselves but also discover some parts of their nature that they could not get known in the real world.

Opis:
Wykreowany w oparciu o nią język poetycki wydobywa uniwersalne doświadczenia ludzkości, przekazuje poczucie wyizolowania i obcości, a także pozwala rewidować zastane wyobrażenia religijne.
The changes in the perception of metaphysical reality that occurred in post-war German religious poetry pose a departure from traditional patterns of imagery, which has led to broadening of the horizons of the described religious experience. Thus, a common ground conducive to the dialogue with immigrant authors who write in German has been created. Christian religious symbolism is a common reference for both the German poets and the authors of foreign origin. The poetic language created on the basis of this symbolism exposes humanity’s universal experiences, communicates a sense of isolation and estrangement and enables a revision of the existing religious representations.

The death of John the Baptist is the result of Salome’s dance in the Bible. In the 2nd part of the poem Three Gazes into an Opal by Georg Trakl and in the poem Veil Dance by Günter Grass the image of Salome is evoked by veils which are identifi cation marks of that fi gure in the drama Salome by Oscar Wilde. The dance of a woman in both poems is not connected with death any more but with life – with the return into mother’s womb in the text by Trakl and with the entrance to the art’s womb in the text by Grass.

The devil who appears in Charles Gounod’s opera "Faust" based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s drama "Faust" and who is watching the protagonist from the stage during the opera performance seems to be the only person who can help him to find his existential space.

Opis:
The article "From the angel to the man. About Hans Erich Nossack’s and Karl Japsers’s cognitive structure of the I” relates the problem of forming of the human nature. The protagonists of Nossack’s works experience their angels when the deepest part of man’s I sets free as result of the friction between the internal and external world. It is revealed as an impalpable glittering that strikes with the vision of the existence of a higher level - a glittering whose tension is produced by an absorbing contact with death, with art or with another individual. The angels by Nossack keep silence over what the angels by Jaspers talk about. They deny that the man coming into the world is ready-made and summon him to look for the sense of the existence through the incessant (re)constructing of himself. Owing to that they give the direction to the existence and constitute themselves as the most exacting and ownest idea. A dare devil who tries to robe it with the matter annihilates himself. He dies by condemning his angel to the extermination in that consequence because in the empiric reality filled brim-full there is neither a place for doubling the matter of one being nor a place for living without the idea that completes the life with the spirit.

The authors of this article discuss how the works of Hermann Stehr (1864–1940), a German writer from Silesia, were received. An author, who – like Gerhart Hauptmann – stayed in Germany after the national socialists took over. That fact affected the reception of his writing: to this day, he is considered as a representative of the so-colled ‘literature of blood and land’, which the Nazis perceived as expression of „German spirit”. This article presents Stehr’s literary works from various perspectives. It shows the tragedy of the author making political choices in times, when an individual, even the most prominent, was subjected to totalitarian processes of unification and de-individualization.

The rain is a strikingly modest metaphor of solitude. However, it can deliver both its mutable intensity and dynamics (The solitude by Rainer Maria Rilke) and its life-giving and death-bringing power (The rains by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński). The solitude proves that existential element that almost abolishes the limit between God and the man: The divine and the human get mixed in the raindrops that falling down embrace the world like God and that reflect the man as much as he seems to be inside.

The article is a discussion of a study by Rafał Pokrywka titled Współczesna powieść niemieckojęzyczna (Kraków 2018). The author of the study analysed selected works written at the turn of the 21st century, and – in an interesting manner – developed his discussion around a progression of three dimensions of time: the past, the present, and the future, which constitute the contexts for reading individual narratives. The interpretations of German, Austrian, and Swiss novels, both these which exist as Polish translations and these which have not yet been translated, are accompanied by cultural and sociological contexts, while the (re)definitions of the words used in the title of Pokrywka’s volume presented in the introduction enable one to place this original overview in the context of modern studies on the most recent literature.

It is also a reconstruction of the work’s reception in Poland and Germany. The diplomatic materials uncovered in the archives, which shed a new light on the trial of a Polish farm labourer sentenced to death in the Weimar Republic, draw out a broader context and the political tensions surrounding the writer’s stage debut. The author of the article also analyzes the diametrically different modes of reading the drama at Berlin’s Volksbühne and Warsaw’s Ateneum, which led to its becoming the subject of national appropriations, particularly in the case of the play’s Polish reception.
