This article is devoted to ways of exploring the mythical strains in Dante's Divine Comedy. Previous research has managed to extrapolate the classical myths and their medieval variants from Dante's work. However, the theory of myth developed by Hans Blumenberg opens a broader perspective for interpretation, revealing not only the myths' anthropological and historical background, but also demonstrating the way they function within a literary work. The 'world image' presented in the Divine Comedy can be explored in three stages of interpretation. At the most basic level, the article refers to the 'catalogue' of classical and Christian myths contained in Dante's poem. Further analysis of mythical subject-matter allows us to distinguish periodical variants of myths from Antiquity to our time. Finally, 'the working of the myth' is considered at the most general level, with the help of 'absolute metaphors', epitomizing the key images dominating the worldview at every historical period. Being devoted to the central myth of Christianity, Dante believed to have connected 'earth and heaven' with the bridge of his art. The new approach to the subject of myth in Dante's poem, using anthropologically-based concepts, allows us to better understand the construction and functions of Dante's poetic 'journey' in European culture.

The Virgilian oratio suasoria addressed to Ulysses in Dante’s Inferno is here interpreted like a high-style speech in Greek, which ironically uses poetical Latin expressions typical of the character of Dido in love. Ulysses’ figure is than analyzed referring to the comical model of the second Satire by Horace, a clear (and never studied so far) Dantean source. This last shows the sovereign of Ithaca as the deceiver of a group of old people with clouded intellects, with the intention of stealing their patrimony. Ulysses’ deceit is a sin for Dante, but this Greek hero is more responsible because of his irreverent ape-like laughter in front of the mountain of Purgatory as a concrete and symbolic manifestation of infinity. Going beyond the boundaries of human rationality can not be a fault for Dante and his Christian mind, because it is always necessary for him to transcend our limited state, longing for divinization. The real responsibility of Ulysses is therefore his movement towards Mystery with-out humbleness. This last is indeed a complete denial of the self that this Greek spirit does not know, totally lacking the necessary listening disposition.

The article presents attempt of a lecture of a series of similes selected from the Divine Comedy from the functional perspective. It means that we search the illustrative function of the series with respect to the cognitive passage of the protagonist from the mediaeval condition of alienatio through that of peregrinatio towards ordo. The condition change is observable in movement conceptualization in the three dantesque kingdoms. The basis for the observation is offered by similes which seem to form a pattern of meaning. After having drawn some conclusions about this function of the similes, we carry out analysis of two Polish translations of the Divine Comedy in order to identify the same characteristics, detected in the original, in those version of the Poem.

Dante and the Function of Water for an Investigation of the Self. Psychosymbolic Cosmology in the Divine Comedy The famous Epistle to Cangrande written by Dante encourages us to identify the Divine Comedy as an emblematic representation of a psychotherapeutic itinerary. The principal aim of his work is in fact creating a shocking poetic impression for freeing everyone from anxiety and pain, bringing us back to the origin of that eternal joy, which was lost through the Edenic sin, by creating the jail of egoism and the consequential abandon of a global and satisfactory perception of life. Associating itself with the feminine side of the soul and the mystery of the generation of life, the water symbolism in Dante’s poem acquires various meanings and is mainly connected with the malignant or positive rivers, which directly or indirectly indicate the right orientation for going back to the splendid sea of joy: the sea of divine intellect. This last is heaven, and corresponds to a psychic state where we can live together with the vivid memories of all the best we have experienced, learned and discovered during our mortal existence. Hell is a symbol of anguish and despair; here, a psychic emblem of a potential positive transformation is constituted by a little, apparently unimportant brook, which is studied in depth for the first time in this article, revealing the fundamental importance of this emblem, capable of guaranteeing a possible defeat of evil or, more specifically, the transformation of its destructive energy into a positive magic power, which can lead us to the stars. The whole journey of the Divine Comedy appears now more clearly as a symbolic example of ante litteram psychoanalysis.

The article collects information on Norwid’s works found in recent years. The most important discoveries include song lyrics [“Blade kwiaty na odłogu...”], two Norwid’s letters to Julia Pusłowska and an original death certificate of the poet. As to the art works, unknown graphics (6 pieces) and one watercolor of rare beauty (Pythia) were revealed at the auctions. Most of these works enriched the collection of the Museion Norwid Foundation. In the university library in Illinois, a copy of Divine Comedy, given by the poet to Numa Łepkowski, was found. Another important item for Norwidology is a family photo album belonging to Maria de Bonneval née Gerlicz acquired for the collection of the Bloch Family Foundation, which included photos of over 70 people whom Norwid knew. The article also informs about fakes and works whose authorship cannot be credibly attributed to Norwid.

The Aeneid is the most important intertext for the opus magnum of Dante; and Virgil, sometimes metonymically identified with his work, plays a relevant, or indeed crucial part as one of the characters in it. The main purpose of this article is, on the one hand, an analysis and interpretation of certain, only rarely investigated aspects of the relation between Virgil and Dante the pilgrim, in particular those which deal with the defeat of the former as an authority and guide for Dante on the road to spiritual perfection. They result mainly from Virgil’s excessive rationalism. In the critical moments of their journey through the otherworld Dante the author shows the frailty of Virgil’s Christian faith, attained only after his death and not illuminated by divine Grace; he also discloses the deficiencies in Virgil’s understanding of good and evil. On the other hand the author of the article analyses the intertextual “dialogue” that the Comedy conducts with the Aeneid on the basis of the Dantean conception of art in general, and of poetry in particular, taking selected examples into consideration. An essential component of this dialogue is Dante’s reinterpretation of Virgil’s masterpiece, which assumes the form of an aemulatio and tends to reveal the Christian potentiality in the Aeneid, of which Virgil the poet was, of course, utterly unaware.

Through the hermeneutic-symbolic study of the Dantean figures of Virgil, the witches Manto and Erichto, and the mysterious woman loved by St. Francis, we reflect on the sense of magic and thaumaturgy in the Divine Comedy, presenting a new theological interpretation of the secret doctrine of Inferno IX. Virgil is shown in Dante’s poem as the great Roman poet and as the magician of the Neapolitan folkloric traditions of the Middle Ages; he is celebrated but also ridiculed for his limitations. The Christian world, in fact, transcends the pagan idea of magic being Nature’s proud minister, to advance a more complex thaumaturgic concept that indicates a miraculous event belonging not only to man but to the divine that is fused into the human dimension. Along these lines, the most essential characteristics and differences of Virgil the Magician’s two infernal journeys in the Divine Comedy are analysed in detail: first, the one that is determined by the spells of Erichto, Lucan’s witch, and which is therefore the work of ancient pagan black magic; second, the one that is Christianly predisposed by angelic inspiration, that is, by Beatrice, who is the symbol of a newer “celestial magic,” which is, in turn, a special thaumaturgic power indicated by the paradisiac episode of St. Francis and his wife.
Attraverso uno studio ermeneutico-simbolico delle figure dantesche di Virgilio, delle streghe Manto ed Erichto e della sposa di San Francesco si riflette sul senso del magico e del taumaturgico nella Divina Commedia, proponendo una nuova interpretazione teologica della segreta “dottrina” a cui si allude nel canto IX infernale. Virgilio viene mostrato nel poema dantesco come il grande poeta latino e come il mago delle tradizioni folkloriche napoletane del Medioevo: così è celebrato ma anche ridicolizzato per i suoi limiti. Il mondo cristiano, infatti, trascende l’idea pagana della magia che è la signora orgogliosa della natura, per avanzare un “concetto magico” molto più vasto e complesso, evento non più soltanto dell’uomo ma del divino che è fuso e integrato nell’uomo. Su questa linea, si analizzano nei dettagli le più essenziali caratteristiche e differenze dei due viaggi infernali del mago Virgilio nella Divina Commedia: quello che è determinato dagli scongiuri di Erichto, la strega, ed è dunque opera di magia nera pagana antica, e quello che è predisposto cristianamente dall’ispiratrice angelicata, cioè da Beatrice che è simbolo della bellezza foriera di una “magia celestiale” più nuova, cioè una forma di taumaturgia indicata dalla figura paradisiaca di San Francesco e dalla sua sposa.

Rozpatrując zagadki "Boskiej Komedii", można przyjąć, że kultura muzułmańska była dobrze znana Dantemu, przede wszystkim poprzez dzieła takie jak "Księga Drabiny Mahometa", "Podróże Marco Polo" czy prace Riccolda z Montecroce. Islam jest uznawany za zagrożenie, a jednak podziwiany w wizji Dantego. Miłość jest postrzegana jako kluczowy element chrześcijaństwa, jest to caritas i obejmuje ona każdy aspekt życia człowieka, utrzymując go w harmonii. Według Dantego Mahomet nie rozumiał tej koncepcji, dlatego stworzył nowy rodzaj wiary. Zgodnie z wizją "Boskiej Komedii" Mahomet znalazł się w piekle, z poczuciem winy z powodu oszustwa. Z kolei w "Raju" Dante wskazuje, że zbawienie jest możliwe również w islamie, gdzie Prawda jest tolerancyjna, braterska i całkowita.
Within the mysteries of 'The Divine Comedy', it seems that the culture of Muslims is well known to Dante, above all thanks to the mediation of works such as the 'Book of Muhammad’s Ladder '(Kitāb al‑miʿrāj), the 'Travels of Marco Polo' and various writings of friar Riccoldo of Montecroce. Islam is considered a danger, yet it is also admired in Dante’s vision, for its scientific height reached in the Middle Ages. Love is the essential concept of the whole message of Christianity: it is caritas, a universal embrace that includes every aspect of man and harmonizes it. Muhammad, despite his original Christian spiritual formation, according to Dante, did not understand the concept of caritas. Therefore, he deceived others and himself, founding a new creed and a different faith, which is by no means superfluous from a Dantean point of view. Indeed, it is useless and dangerous as a heresy, due to its same nature that generates schism and, precisely, war. It is natural, in this sense, that Muhammad finds himself in hell in the vision of The Divine Comedy, grotesquely oppressed by his guilt of fraud, because he has shared the circle of love (the all‑encompassing and Trinitarian perfection of Love) with all the hatred of his anger. However, beyond all the Muslim limits of a culture of submission and the doctrine that arises from it, Dante reveals to us in his 'Paradise' a possible salvation also for Islam (apparently damned); and this for a very subtle yet strong way: the mystical way in its perfect sentimental Truth, which is tolerant, fraternal and inclusive.

The purpose of the article is to discuss the biography of Dante Alighieri, written by Alessandro Barbero and recently published in Polish translation. The study in question is presented with regard to other recent biographies of Dante Alighieri. The perspective adopted in the text is that of a historian, not a philologist or literary scholar.

Już wielu badaczy zauważało, że choć Krasiński był przywiązany do Włoch, to jego związek z italską ziemią nie zawsze miał jednakowe natężenie i podlegał on wielu wahaniom i zmianom. Artykuł ma na celu pokazanie tego złożonego związku, pogłębiając szczególnie rozumienie niejednoznacznej relacji poety z Włochami, a zwłaszcza z Neapolem – miastem o wielu twarzach, gdzie mieszkała jego ukochana Delfina Potocka. Ten trudny „związek z miastem” uwidacznia się w korespondencji i twórczości Krasińskiego. Neapol pozostawał emblematyczny, bo to miasto, które z jednej strony jawiło się jako tło rajskiego, idealnego do życia i tworzenia miejsca, pozwalającego odczuwać miłość do ukochanej kobiety, z drugiej zaś strony było miejscem nie do zniesienia, w którym poeta niechętnie przebywał. Najprawdopodobniej na ten dualistyczny obraz Włoch wpłynęły ówczesne problemy społeczno-polityczne miasta, ale przede wszystkim kwestie osobiste – wewnętrzne uczucia i nastroje samego Krasińskiego.
As many researchers have noted, although Krasiński felt a special affinity for Italy, his relationship to the Italian soil was subjected to emotional variations and changes. The article aims to analyze the complicated and ambiguous relationship between the poet and Naples: a city of many different shades and faces, where Krasiński’s lover Delfina Potocka lived. This ambivalent relationship to Italy is reflected in the poet’s correspondence and works.Naples remains an emblematic city for Krasiński, because in his work it appears, on the one hand, as a perfect backdrop for an ideal place where he can set his love, and on the other hand, as unbearable place, where the poet was reluctant to stay. Most likely, this Krasiński’s dualistic picture of Italy was influenced not only by the socio-political problems of the city, but also, above all, by personal feelings, moods and uneasiness for his suffering homeland.

The eight-hundredth anniversary of the Great Poet's death is the occasion of this study, which presents the souls of the twelve scholars immortalised by Dante in the fourth heaven. Approaching such personalities, we note the diverse cultural forms that have marked history and continue to illuminate it with the wisdom of their works. From this insight springs a hymn in honour of the culture that also shines brightly in Dante's poetry.

Artykuł przedstawia wkład Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego w rozwój polskiej dantologii. Działo się to za sprawą lekcji, które Kraszewski prowadził na temat Dantego w Krakowie i Lwowie w 1867 roku, które następnie, w roku 1869, ukazały się drukiem pod tytułem: Studja nad Komedją Boską. Despite the tormented national reality, the faith in the future redemption of Poland and the idea of change and purification gave birth in the works of the Polish romantics to the hope of salvation, of the advent of the divine kingdom on Earth. Undoubtedly an idea contributed to the birth of this optimistic vision, that was the conception of a Poland like the “Christ of the nations”, which took hold in the new mystical atmosphere of the early nineteenth century and which was combined with Christian eschatologism, revolutionary aspirations and hopes for the future redemption of history. The apocalyptic and millenarian motifs present in the Divine Comedy undeniably played a part in strengthening the messianic ideas of the romantics: the present from a fertile ground for evil and chaos, through suffering and destruction, became the privileged moment of expiation that prepared the advent of the city of God. The paper aims to analyze some motifs from Dante’s Paradise which inspired some of the most stunning pages of Polish romantic literature.
Mimo udręczonej rzeczywistości narodowej, wiara w przyszłe odkupienie Polski oraz idea przemiany i oczyszczenia zrodziła w dziełach polskich romantyków nadzieję zbawienia, nadejścia Bożego królestwa na ziemię. Niewątpliwie przyczyniła się do narodzin tej optymistycznej wizji, która zadomowiła się w nowej, mistycznej atmosferze początku XIX wieku, Polski jak „Chrystus narodów”, która łączyła się z chrześcijańskim eschatologizmem, rewolucyjnymi dążeniami i nadziejami na przyszłe odkupienie historii. Apokaliptyczne i millenarystyczne motywy obecne w Boskiej Komedii niewątpliwie przyczyniły się do umocnienia mesjańskich idei romantyków: teraźniejszość jako teren zła i chaosu, poprzez cierpienie i zniszczenie, stała się uprzywilejowanym momentem ekspiacji, przygotowującym nadejście miasta Boga. Artykuł ten ma na celu analizę niektórych motywów z Raju Dantego, które zainspirowały niektóre z piękniejszych stron polskiej literatury romantycznej.

In 2010 in the blog nonsolusblog.wordpress.com information appeared about finding in the collection of the Illinois University Library a copy of the Italian edition of Dante's Divine Comedy that had belonged to Cyprian Norwid. Probably Norwid had this copy in the Berlin prison, and on the basis of it he translated fragments of the Italian masterpiece. On the title page, beside the poet's signature, there is the inscription “Florencja 1846” (Florence 1846). The date is a riddle, as in the light of the present knowledge it does not seem likely that Norwid could be in Italy in that year The dedication in the book (“To N. Łepkowski in remembrance of 1854 in America) has made it possible to establish that its addressee, Numa Łepkowski, was born in Volhynia about 1805, he studied at the Warsaw University, and then he fought in the November Uprising. Together with a large group of Polish veterans (234 people) he was deported to the United States, among others with August Antoni Jakubowski. Until his death (28 May 1887) Łepkowski made his living by playing the guitar: he composed music, gave concerts, but first of all he taught playing this instrument in the most famous New York homes. He was also active in organizations of the Polish community in America, and he took part in the social life of the New York elites. It was probably because of his high social status and extensive relations that Norwid met him. The death of the composer and his rank as a musician was noted in obituaries in several American, and even New Zealand newspapers Under Norwid's signature on the title page of the book there is an imprint of a signet-ring, in which elements of the Topór coat of arms, the poet's family sign, can be recognized. This is an additional premise that allows deciding that the book belonged to the poet's library.
