Opis:
Background. Obesity and a sedentary way of life play an important part in public health in Hungary. This phenomenon is becoming more and more serious not only in adults but also children. Adults’ health behaviour is greatly affected by the existence or absence of health awareness. Regular exercising in association with general fitness form an integral part of health awareness. Our objective is to demonstrate the nutrition and fitness status of students in higher education with a comprehensive test. Material and methods. Beside general factors affecting health, such as BMI, skeletal muscle, body fat, visceral fat percentage, participants performed practical tasks which provided data of their stamina, muscular strength and fitness status: (1) a 15/20-minute shuttle run, (2) a scheduled abdominal muscle test (3) manual clamping force measurement (4) a scheduled push up test (5) a standing long-jump test, and (6) a flexibility test. Results. According to our survey, young adults’ nutrition status was satisfactory, two third of them had normal BMI. Left manual clamping force and trunk stretching force in men, stamina and explosive power in women were significantly determined by BMI classification. Basing on these results, we can state that body weight has no effect on joint mobility. Conclusions. The present study draws attention to several former conclusions which suggest that more efforts are needed in higher education to improve health promotion of the youth. Introduction of compulsory physical education classes might facilitate further research which may follow-up the changes in the fitness status of young people.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Oprócz ogólnych czynników wpływających na zdrowie, takich jak BMI, mięśnie szkieletowe, tkanki tłuszczowej, tkanki tłuszczowej, uczestnicy wykonali zadania, które dostarczyły danych o ich wytrzymałości, sile mięśni, stanie sprawności: (1) 15/20-minutowy bieg (2) test mięśni brzucha (3) ręczny pomiar siły nacisku (4) test naciskowy (5) test długiego skoku (6) test elastyczności. Wyniki.

Opis:
Body build and physical fitness of schoolchildren of low socioeconomic strata from urban and rural areas of Yucatan were studied. The material consisted of 552 children from Merida (the capital city of Yucatan State, Mexico) and of 526 children from the Yaxcaba horticultural community, 7 through 14 years of age. These are cross-sectional samples studied in 1996-97 in Merida and in 1999 and 2000 in Yaxcaba. The ethnic origin was evaluated using two surnames of children (from the father and mother side). The studied variables included stature, BMI, arm circumference, grip strength, agility run, Sargent vertical jump index (explosive strength), spine flexibility index, and reaction time. Urban children are significantly taller than rural ones, and BMI and arm circumference show also a tendency to be greater in urban areas. Physical fitness tests are better performed (better results) in rural areas than in urban ones. If the whole material is divided according to two ethnic groups (Mayas and Mestizos, and Creoles)  the differences in body build are still observed but those in physical fitness disappeared. Creole children are taller than Mayas and Mestizos and they show a tendency to have more weight for height and greater arm circumference. Generally, the differences in physical fitness are only observed between rural and urban children what may be caused by a more active way of life in villages than in towns resulting from agricultural activity. However, differences in stature are observed between ethnic as well as between rural and urban groups. This may have the genetic origin (Creoles and Mayas), and in the case of different localities, it may also be caused by more various nutrition in towns than in villages.

The purpose of training in ju-jitsu is developing characteristic adaptation to physical activity and optimizing body functions so as to obtain maximal achievements. A means to an end is mastering the fighting technique and develop the essential level of special physical fitness. The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of a modified circuit training conducted according to an original program on level of special physical fitness of ju-jitsu trainees. Ju-jitsu trainees having similar somatic parameters and training experience (3-5 years) were included in the research. 30 participants between the age of 21 and 28 have been selected by means of a purposeful selection. On the basis of different variants of a circuit training and governed by the guidelines of a functional training for trainees, we have developed a training programme which aims to develop special strength, stamina and speed skills. STATISTICA PL software was used to compile the results. In order to determine statistical significance of differences between pre- and posttest measurements in the evaluated group of Ju-Jitsu contestants, a t-test for related groups was used. In conclusion, the proposed training programme proceeds at a high level of intensity, which resembles start activity (which is indicated by the heart rate frequency measurement and lactic acid blood concentration) and may be used in ju-jistu training. The experimental training programme has exerted positive influence on the participants’ with respect to the number of movements made, which can affect their effectiveness in fight.

The aim of this study is to see if there are significant relationships between different variables of physical condition and academic performance. Most literature shows that a relationship does exist, mainly emphasizing maximal oxygen consumption and academic performance. With regard to the other variables, more differences can be found. A total of 79 students participated in the study from the island of Majorca (Spain), ranging in age from 12.5 to 14.5 years. Students passed fitness tests, which were compared with their academic results. The results show a significant positive relationship between BMI and hand grip strength and significant negative relationships between BMI and note and between BMI and maximal oxygen consumption. No significant relationships have been found, however, between maximal oxygen consumption and note. Assessment of the importance of physical condition and therefore physical education in academic performance is of interest in order to implement the necessary hours of Physical Education. Furthermore, this subject should be characterised further in terms of its relation to the issue of health.

The aim of the present review is to investigate the main field-based tests, used alone or included in sport or fitness batteries, for the assessment of health- and skill-related physical fitness components in adolescents. Different scientific databases were searched through using the selected key words related to physical fitness and its components for adolescence. The search focused on original articles and reviews/meta-analyses using valid, reproducible and feasible tests that fit within the school environment. A total of 100 scientific manuscripts were included in the qualitative synthesis. The present systematic review pointed out 5 fitness tests that well adapt to the evaluation of the components of physical fitness of adolescents within a school environment: the 20 m shuttle run test for cardio-respiratory endurance; the handgrip strength test for upper body maximal strength; the standing broad jump test for lower body maximal strength; the sit-up test to exhaustion for muscular endurance and the 4×10 m shuttle run test for speed, agility and coordination. These fitness tests have been finally selected and incorporated into the Adolescents and Surveillance System for the Obesity prevention – Fitness Test Battery (ASSO-FTB), and will be adopted within the ASSO Project for evaluation purposes. This instrument could be also provided to teachers and people working in schools in order to assess physical fitness of adolescents over time and prevent obesity and related diseases.

The aim of this pilot study was to determine (a) the effects of high intensity strength training in the workplace on blood pressure, fat percentage and physical fitness in overweight adults, and (b) the influence of this intervention on the blood pressure in a subsample of hypertensive subjects. Overweight adults (n=15) aged 42.8 years underwent anthropometric assessment (weight, fat percentage, waist circumference, and triceps skinfold), physical fitness assessment (leg extensor power, upper body endurance, hand grip strength and Vo2max) and blood pressure assessment before and after 8 weeks of high intensity resistance training in the workplace. Each training session consisted of 16 sets of 45 repetitions performed at 1 repetition per second, decreasing load at the point of muscular failure starting at 60% of repetition maximum (RM). The effects of the intervention were analyzed by paired sample t-tests. For exploratory purposes, a non-parametric test was also performed (Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank) to examine if this decision could affect the results. Weight, body fat percentage, and triceps skinfold decreased significantly with the high intensity resistance training protocol in the workplace (all P<0.05). Performance in physical fitness tests increased significantly with training (all P<0.05), except for handgrip strength. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly with R-HIRT in the workplace (all P <0.05) in hypertensive subjects (n=10). This protocol performed in the workplace in this pilot study produces health and fitness benefits in overweight and hypertensive people.

Grupa I uzyskała najwyższą średnią arytmetyczną próbach w skoku w dal z miejsca i rzucie piłką lekarską oburącz zza głowy oraz ćwiczeniu wytrzymałościowym Delfin.
A high level of physical fitness is in many cases a necessary condition to perform a particular job role. Firefighters often carry out the rescue operations in situations requiring the high consciousness, deliberation, fast reaction and big psychophysical reliability. Therefore, the level of efficiency of future officers of the fire department is an important research problem impinging their future career prospects. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the physical fitness of three generations of the Fire College in Cracow and to show the direction of the trend of changes in physical fitness of this group of young people. The study included 272 men trained in a two-year Fire College of the State Fire Service(SFS) in Cracow. Motor skills were assessed using the Pilicz test. As the second research tool, the test evaluating the physical fitness necessary for candidates to serve in the SFS,was used.. To assess the motor efficiency ,the following tests were used: the pull-ups on a bar, the Zig-Zag test, the standing broad jump, the medicine ball throw, the Dolphin exercise. Statistical analysis were conducted using the Microsoft Office Excel and the STATISTICA 9.0 program made by the StatSoft. In turn, the significance of differences was evaluated with the application of the Student’s test for independent variables. The statistical significance was considered at p<0,05. The analysis of the results showed differences in the level of physical fitness between the cadets studied in different years. In the pull – up exercise, the best result was achieved in the group 2 (19 repetitions), while in the beep test the best results were in the group 3, reaching an average time of 23.4 seconds. Group 1 got the highest arithmetic mean of the long jump attempts and shot the ball with both hands behind the head and the “Dolphin” endurance exercise. In the tested groups, based on the results of the following tests: the pull ups ,the beep test, and the jump from the place, no statistically significant differences in physical fitness were observed.. In other trials the statistically significant differences were reported . In addition, the declining results in the subsequent years in the attempts in the standing broad jump, throw a medicine ball and the “Dolphin” exercise were observed. Conclusion. The fitness level is diversified depending on the generation especially in the attempt of explosive strength of upper limbs and the Dolphin endurance exercise. Observed differences in the level of the physical fitness between the tested cadets show how the specific fire training is. There must be systematical control of the level of physical efficiency of firefighters, which enables them to fulfill their duties in the SFS and carry out the rescue actions in the best way.

Opis:
This study aimed to compare the physical demands of contact small sided game (CSSG), non-contact small sided game (NCSSG) and match play in female rugby union. Fifteen female rugby union players participated within this study. Participants completed two testing sessions. Session one involved two 20-minute small sided games (contact and non-contact). Session two involved a competitive rugby union game. Movement characteristics, heart rate, PlayerLoadTM and tackles were recorded using GPS units and heart rate monitors. No significant differences were identified between conditions in relation to average heart rate or time spent in different heart rate zones. Significant differences were identified between conditions for distance, normalised PlayerLoadTM and tackles. Distance covered was significantly higher in the non-contact small sided game, while normalised PlayerLoadTM and tackles were significantly lower in this condition. These findings suggest that the physiological stress, in terms of heart rate, is comparable between the match and both small sided games. Thus both small sided games seem to elicit an appropriate internal training response. However, the reductions in tackles and normalised PlayerLoadTM in the non-contact small sided game are likely to reduce injury risk, while the increase in distance covered may enhance the training stimuli provided in this condition.

Opis:
Acquiring competences in the area of physical culture depends on the intention of physical activity, as well as on the level of physical fitness. It is important to learn the factors determining physical fitness; therefore the purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between the stages of readiness for regular physical activity and the level of physical fitness of children from Poland and Turkey. The research included pupils aged 14 living in the Raciborz area in Poland and in the area of the city of Balikesir in Turkey. Readiness for regular physical activity was assessed using a special algorithm in accordance with the concept of the transtheoretical model (TM). In this research the interpretation of TM was accepted for the assessment of intentional behavior. To determine the level of physical fitness, the European Fitness Test - Eurofit was used. Statistical analyses showed statistically significant differences. Of the 8 tests carried out, in six - a larger level was obtained by respondents from Poland and in five of them these were statistically significant differences. In 2 of the tests carried out, the young people from Turkey reached an average higher level. The correlation coefficient between the stages of readiness to undertake physical activity and physical fitness tests was calculated to achieve the main objective. The vast majority were low dependencies. On the basis of the conducted research, it was found that the studied group of Polish youth was characterized by a higher level of physical fitness than their peers in Turkey. There was no significant relationship between the stages of readiness to undertake physical activity and the results of fitness tests. The need for further research was concluded.

Opis:
An important aspect of a senior's life is to be able to function independently in his or her own and family surroundings as long as possible, actively participate in social life without economic barriers. Numerous studies show that the quality of life and the biological condition of the elderly alongside nutrition are clearly dominant and have a positive effect on their functional physical fitness. In order to promote physical activity and physiological prevention among the elderly, a physiotherapeutic program was organized under the "Summer Sanatorium of Prevention of the spine pain syndrome", which was attended regularly by a group of senior citizens from the Karkonosze University of the Third Age in Jelenia Góra. The aim of the study was to compare the level of functional physical activity before and after treatment among the participants. The study was conducted among 20 women aged 60-75 years, before and after 6 weeks of treatment, which included: gymnastics for prevention of back pain syndromes, relaxation training, full spine massage, TENS electrotherapy and ultrasound in the lumbar and cervical spine. Research included; assessment of functional physical fitness by the Functional Senior Fitness Tests: „stretching behind" and "slope forward", ranges of motion within the selected joints of the spine, upper and lower limbs. The selected form of physiotherapeutic treatment improves the results obtained after test with the Functional Senior Fitness Test and influences the range of motion in the selected joints, which demonstrates that physical fitness is improved. Physical activity in the form of general-purpose gymnastics favors higher levels of functional fitness of elderly women, physical therapy and massage improves mood and makes older people more willing to participate in physio preventing programs. The conducted research proves that the developed program was optimal and showed a positive effect on the daily functional fitness of the examined persons.
