Opis:
Modernity in the West had, among other things, the effect of encouraging people to distance themselves, especially from the more cultivated classes, from ecclesiastical structures, at first, and then from the Christian religion itself. This distancing had incidence on individualism, which also led to a modern vision of man and society. This paper discusses the main philosophical, political and cultural motives that directly influenced, especially after the French Revolution, the accelerated process of secularization. This process led to the skeptical and post-metaphysical attitude of the post-modernity of the 20th century. Unlike previous ones, it was a century in which atheism was not an attitude of few individuals among the intellectuals but it spread also to large groups of citizens. However, since the last two decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st, some changes can be perceived that could indicate a return of interest towards religion in the West.

The work of Zygmunt Bauman is often classified by commentators and critics as either representing the thoughts of a proponent of postmodernism or as those of a valiant defender of a humanistic variant of Marxism. This article, however, focuses on a specific and often neglected leitmotif-sometimes hidden, sometimes explicit-running through Bauman’s work from the early years until the most recent publications, the utopian mentality. Bauman’s work is dissected along the lines of its contribution to utopian thought, however without it ever proposing a sketch of an ‘ideal society’ or ‘the common good’ as so many other utopian writers. Bauman is classified among the band of critical social thinkers-including the likes of Ernst Bloch and Leszek Kołakowski-for whom utopianism is an undying motif in human life, but who also, in varying degrees, fear the detrimental consequences of an actual implementation of Utopia. Moreover, they all, and especially Bauman, insist that the currently lived-through version of (in)human reality is not the only one possible and that we may still muster and imagine alternatives to the stubborn present.

Considerations of the author are accompanied by the following questions: 1) how is change in self understood in the French sociologist’s concept?; 2) what is characteristic of this change in the concept? The author presents an outline of Kaufmann’s idea of modernity and his theory of Self, and then he analyses the theory of changes in Self proposed by the French thinker, including interpretation of dreams, small passions and anomic events. In addition, the author refers to Peter Sloterdijk publication You Must Change Your Life.

In this piece, the authors detect and delineate an often neglected core concern within the sociology of Zygmunt Bauman-social suffering. They trace this concern with suffering from the early year writing within a Marxist framework focusing on the working class through middle periods concerned with the Holocaust, Jews, strangers and the Other to the later years and the preoccupation with the victims of consumerism. The authors document how social suffering has remained a significant leitmotif in Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology but suggest how his writings on misery and suffering paradoxically point to a world of human possibility and responsibility.

This article presents and confronts two views concerning the link between modernity and romanticism. On the one hand, the view proposed by the Nobel Prize winner, the Mexican Octavio Paz in his book Los hijos del limo. Del romanticismo a la vanguardia, and, on the other hand, the one put forward by the prolific Spanish writer Rafael Argullol in his El Héroe y el Único. El espíritu trágico del romanticismo. While for O. Paz the romantic movement as a child of modernity has inspired partially the modern search for the new in itself, for R. Argullol the romantic spirit is expression above all of a tragic-heroic mood of dissatisfaction with modernity. Both writers see the paradoxical nature of romanticism –sometimes longing for the past, sometimes dreaming about the future– as a complex expression of modernity’s self-awareness and self-criticism.

A context of my paper is the debate on reason, tradition and traditional communities, in which this moral and epistemological issues were discussed as a part of general socio-philosophical theory of modernity. In particular I intend to locate my considerations in the context of formal-pragmatic theory of modern communicative rationality developed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. I will provide a competitive model of the rationality of tradition by applying a conceptual toolkit of pragmatically oriented analysis to explain practices connected with vocabulary of tradition. I argue that tradition as a communication system has a fully rational structure. My main claim is that communicative structure of tradition has a rational structure of language game. This structure includes defined principles of communication for members of closed tradition-grounded community and rule of inclusion for potential new members. Firstly I consider closely internal principles of communication within the framework of tradition contrasting them shortly with normative-deontic rules of the postenlightenment idea of pragmatic communication discussed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. After that I examine the rule of inclusion — the rule, which mediates between closed system of tradition-based community and his environment.

Opis:
In Zygmunt Bauman’s work, ambivalence was a topic that recurred explicitly several times in his analyses of modernity and later liquid modernity. This was particularly evident in his book Modernity and Ambivalence (1991). But ambivalence also appears as an underlying theme in later books on life in liquid-modern society. Moreover, Bauman’s sociological perspective itself oozes ambivalence, and many of the topics he explored and embraced throughout his career – such as freedom, morality, immortality and utopia – are themselves fundamental expressions of ambivalence. In addition, Bauman always insisted that the world is not fixed once and for all, but that humans can challenge and change it, and in this way ambivalence is not an ailment to be cured but rather a fact to be accepted. This article explores the theme and leitmotif of ambivalence in the writings of Bauman. The article seeks to provide a concise presentation and discussion of Bauman’s continuous engagement with ambivalence in order to show that sociology perhaps ought to take the topic of ambivalence more seriously than is currently the case.
W pracach Zygmunta Baumana problematyka ambiwalencji raz po raz wyraziście zaznacza swoją obecność w analizach nowoczesności, a następnie płynnej nowoczesności. Wprawdzie szczególnie poczesne miejsce zajmuje ona w jego książce Modernity and Ambivalence z roku 1991 (wyd. pol.

In these remarks I recall the attempts of pointing out the relations between philosophy and modernity in sciences in three distinctively differing point of view, that is the achievements of “the Enlightened Age” (in the sense of Ernst Cassirer), phenomenological philosophy (in the sense of Edmund Husserl) and the classicist conservatism (in the sense of Allan Bloom). In each of these cases an importance of those relations is being acknowledged. However it is not just differently evaluated and justified, but also the diagnoses and forecasts related to it look differently either.

The author discusses the basic assumptions of critical concepts and indicates the questionable places of the problem structure emerging from those assumptions. In so doing, he treats Bez autorytetu as a form of a modern essay which developed in the conditions of mature modernism, which was reflected in the various attempts at transcending modernistic conditions, both formal and conceptual.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the article is to investigate the problem of success/failure of the complex process of secularization in Russia in the context of historical developments, especially the Reformation(s), and to propose a new conceptualization of the field of research. Within the scope of investigation, secularization is understood as the process of incessant production of knowledge that leads to progressive differentiation and distinction of various aspects of society on the level of macrostructures. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: There is a need to assess anew the linkage between the Reformation(s) as a prolonged process of questioning of all cultural formations (epistemes) and the particular historical settings in which they manifested themselves. According to model advanced by Bruno Latour, it can be said that Reformation(s) redefined the procedure of attaining knowledge by breaking the logic of procession and instituting the logic of network. Secularization became one of the key modules of reconstituting the knowledge/power relation within different epistemes. Russia has often been perceived as immutable and culturally mute entity “unto itself,” untouched by modernity, separate from the dominant Western episteme. This article presents a cognitivist perspective, based on the model of a double helix. It assumes the legitimacy of different narrations of modernity, which may differ in terms of practices of translation, but are still the active actors of the dynamic process of modern continuity and change, as exemplified by trajectories of Reformation(s). THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: First, the article defines the scope of investigation of secularization as the production of knowledge. Then it assesses where and how the “secular parable,” whose agent was Reformation(s), performed on large discursive fields of modernity – including its problematic relationship with the theory of modernization. Subsequently, the model of a double helix is presented as a heuristic tool for understanding the way by which the translation of Russia within the framework of modernity has taken place. Alternative models, like Enlightenment, Euroasianism (Gumilev, Dugin) are discussed within the context of the notion of altermodernity, as formulated by Nicolas Bourriaud. Then, the article assesses, in what way secularization in Russia, understood as a “cultural program” (S.N. Eisenstadt) had formed, over centuries, a heterogeneous text, responding to various temporalities. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result is a proposal of a new conceptualization of the field of research as an interdisciplinary reading of mutuality of relations between Russia and secularization as a continuous translation of the structures of thought and knowledge of modernity in the contextual, historically grounded praxis of power/knowledge dynamics. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Taking a cue from Polanyi’s “personal knowledge,” the research has aimed at depicting a new cognitive perspective that seriously takes into consideration the interdisciplinarity of knowledge. Research on secularization and research on Russia tend to form two different spheres of scholarly activities, often weighted down by stereotypes. The stereotype about secularization is that it refers mainly to decreasing the religious aspect of social life, which development is associated with the emergence of modernity. As for Russia, the stereotype is that it does not participate in modernity at all. The article proposes a more productive way of relating Russia and secularization as a process of translating dispositifs of modernity in a contextual manner, that takes into consideration political dispositions, cultural traits, institutional practices and discontinuities of social development.

Atheism as a practice of life is becoming increasingly popular in modern western societies. A life devoid of reference to religious practices is becoming not so much an element of rebellion against the established religious traditions, but more of a certain obviousness that no one contests. Hence the question arises, how is the Church to function in such an environment and how to preach the Gospel? Pope Francis, and whim him modern theology, is increasingly emphasizing the role of the Church as a servant who, in humility and social engagement and through work of mercy, can preach the Gospel to modern man. The Church should proclaim the Gospel not through speculative theology, but through engagement with the poors and most need.

The work of the Ethiopian Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), which commenced in Addis Ababa in the early 1950s and spread to eighteen Ethiopian cities until the early 1970s, revolved around the de-velopment of a ‘balanced manhood’ through social, recreational, spiritual and educational activities among boys and young men. Similar to the UK and American templates, it combined inward-looking character develop-ment and outward-looking religiosity with the idea of a ‘muscular Christian-ity’. In the 1930s, the American YMCA linked these aspects with concepts of the ‘modern’ YMCA member as a leader with specific character traits. This approach met with the post-World War II needs for ‘progressive’ citi-zens and leaders in Ethiopia. Incorporating sports as a morally positive ac-tivity became a powerful strategy for the creation of a distinct life style and a legitimate form of self-improving leisure for educated males in Ethiopian cities, notably Addis Ababa. The following paper discusses the establishment of the Ethiopian YMCA and its contribution to the production of the ‘modern man’ along three lines. The first part places the emergence of the YMCA sports culture within broader developments of physical education in inter-war and post-war urban Ethiopia. In the second part I will look at concrete activities which attempted to channel the energy of young males for the good of the nation. The conclusion will discuss the question in how far these activities built on religious arguments which supported or opposed existing notions of acceptable bodies and perceptions of useful self-improving leisure.

Particularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century sensorial experiences changed at breakneck speed. Social and technological developments of modernity like the industrial revolution, rapid urban expansion, the advance of capitalism and the invention of new technologies transformed the field of the senses. Instead of attentiveness, distraction became prevalent. It is not only Baudelaire who addressed these transformations in his poems, but they can also be recognized in the works of novelist Gustave Flaubert and painter Edward Munch. By means of the work of William James, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Georg Simmel, the repercussions of this crisis of the senses for subjectivity will be discussed.

This paper discusses gardening as a practice that may be useful in reconsidering how landscape boundaries can be experienced. The assumption is that one should think of landscapes as “entities” which are material, but at the same time may be said to exist only insofar as they are experienced by humans. As such, they are always bounded. In order to show how gardening may be helpful in shaping the boundaries of landscapes two approaches to gardening are discussed: one treats gardening as a model of creating order and eliminating all that which is seen as alien to it (Zygmunt Bauman), the other – claims that gardening requires respecting nature (Gilles Clément).

In the context of the contemporary civilizational changes and the cross-roads of modernity and post modernity paradigms, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the post-migrant cultural identities is more visible. The author argues that to understand the mechanism of that specificity requires the evolution of theoretical thought as well as new research methodology on the processes of identity creation, since in comparison with the previous migration waves, the situation of post-migrant generations has significantly changed in the area of politics, ethnicity and group mobilization. The paper shows the most important changes in the domain of ethnicity, creating the background for interpreting ethnic mobilization of post-migrant generations.

Do Marjorie Garber’s premises that Shakespeare makes modern culture and that modern culture makes Shakespeare apply to his reception in Asian contexts? Shakespeare’s Asianization, namely adaptation of certain Shakespeare elements into traditional forms of local cultures, seems to testify to his timelessness in timeliness. However, his statuses in modern Asia are much more complicated. The complexity lies not only in such a cross-cultural phenomenon as the Asianizing practice, but in the Shakespearization of Asia-the idealization of him as a modern cultural icon in a universalizing celebration of his authority in many sectors of modern Asian cultures. Yet, the very entities of Asia, Shakespeare, modernity, and tradition must be problematized before we approach such complexities. I ask questions about Shakespeare’s roles in Asian conceptions of modernity and about the relationship between his literary heritage and Asian traditions. To address these questions, I will discuss this timeliness in Asian cultures with a focus on Shakespeare adaptations in Asian forms, which showcase various indigenous approaches to his text-from the elitist legacy maintaining to the popularist re-imagining. Asian practices of doing Shakespeare have involved other issues. For instance, whether or not the colonial legacies and postcolonial re-inventions in the dissemination of his works in Asian cultures confirm or subvert the various myths about both the Bard and modernity in most time of the 20th century; in what ways Shakespeare has been used as at once a negotiating agent and negotiated subject in the processes of the prince’s translations and adaptations into Asian languages, costumes, landscapes, cultures and traditions.

The article is a discussion of a study by Rafał Pokrywka titled Współczesna powieść niemieckojęzyczna (Kraków 2018). The author of the study analysed selected works written at the turn of the 21st century, and – in an interesting manner – developed his discussion around a progression of three dimensions of time: the past, the present, and the future, which constitute the contexts for reading individual narratives. The interpretations of German, Austrian, and Swiss novels, both these which exist as Polish translations and these which have not yet been translated, are accompanied by cultural and sociological contexts, while the (re)definitions of the words used in the title of Pokrywka’s volume presented in the introduction enable one to place this original overview in the context of modern studies on the most recent literature.

Departing from the analysis of the relationship between the birth of the subject of race and the development of capitalism (Mbembe), Sajewska examines the status of blackness in semi-peripheral countries, such as Poland, whose participation in the history of colonial expansion is negligible, as is its influence on the shape and prosperity of capitalism. In her text she proposes to look at peripheral cultural practices as ways of producing and problematizing knowledge. She focuses her attention on Artur Żmijewski's film Glimpse, which was first presented at documenta 14 in Athens in 2017, as a result of the artist's month-long trip with his camera to areas affected by repressive refugee policy. In her historical-cultural analysis of the film, Sajewska shows the position of the artist as a subject representing "peripheral modernity" (Pratt), who on the margins of the European center - in refugee camps - once again performs the racist scenes that underpin the idea of the center’s modernity. Reflecting on the provincial status of the discourses, on the ways in which they are “travelling” in culture, on the localness of the archive and on the regional character of the concepts, she opens up perspectives on peripheral history and culture theory.

When Bruno Latour says that “we have never been modern,” he means only to recognize that the ‘actually living’ of modernity (or the temporal duration we’ve often categorized as ‘modernity’) is something altogether different (and far more complicated) than the theoretical apparatus by which academic intellectuals use to describe and categorize it. The modern condition, then, involves a separation between the socio-economic creation of ‘hybrid objects’ and theoretical reflection on society. This reflection takes the form of ‘purification,’ or a clear distinction between nature and culture, science and politics. Drawing upon Charles Dickens’ last completed novel, Our Mutual Friend, as well as Marx, I will argue that already in Victorian England we can find coherent representations of modernity that defy Latour’s high standard of actualized purification (or a visible ‘reality’ that conforms to our purified categorizations). That is, in Dickens and Marx we can find a literary-economic discourse of ‘modernity’ (which may also be Victorian post-humanism) that already recognized the failure of ‘purification’ as the result of expansive capitalism.

Ulrich Beck is a famous German sociologist who has examined the concepts of risk society and the second modernity. Both terms were described by Beck as opposite to industrial society and class society. Recently, Dean Curran has attempted to overcome this opposition, and reconcile hermeneutics of classes and the risk society. This article examines the exchange of arguments between Ulrich Beck and Dean Curran and treats this exchange as a pretext to systematically identify those parts of the theory of risk society that cannot be reconciled with class theory. We examine how Marxian and Weberian theories of classes can effectively explain the phenomenon of second modernity.

The article discusses the transformations of the idea of park in modernity. In the Age of Enlightenment Europe replaced the white of medieval cathedrals with the green of parks. A man, like Candide from Voltaire’s satire, started to “cultivate his garden,” changing private parks in public spaces. As a consequence of that process the idea of park as a place where you could experience beauty and pleasure completely “vanished”. Urban green spaces started to be determined by an efficacy parameter – which can be witnessed in Le Corbusier’s or Ebenezer Howard’s projects – thus opening the way for transforming former landscape parks into modern places of consumption: commercial parks and amusement parks.

The article concentrates on the concept of shock, developed by the philosopher during reading Baudelaire and Kafka. With this concept, it is possible to describe the transition from the narrative conception of experience to “point experience” constituted by series of sudden unconnected impulses. The moment conducing to this transition was the I World War which for Benjamin – as well as for others significant thinkers of that time – constituted an important turning point.

In my paper I undertake the issue of alienation, that appears at the same sources of modern thought and develops according to the growing consciousness of its conditions and consequences. The first articulation of the phenomenon of alienation we can find in the works of Jean Jacques Rousseau, but its conceptual expression was formulated in the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The progress of discourse of alienation in the analyses of Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx and the members of Frankfurt School reveals its essence that depends on the elimination of the personal status of individual. The attempts of overcoming the phenomenon of alienation undertaken by mentioned thinkers leaves the problem unresolved, because of the distinctive feature of all these attempts is mediation the conceptions of human being in limited perspective (concerning individual as mere exemplar of species or as a passive result of an external conditions).

The paper is devoted to the author’s concept of modern apocrypha in the context of the two main tendencies of (Post)modernity: unmasking and paraphrasing. On the basis of the literary paraphrases of the Evangelical story, found in the Bulgarian (Post)Modern literary, there is shown a hermeneutic passage from “apocrypha as a literary mystification” (“literary apocrypha”), i.e. a concept often applied in literary studies, to “apocrypha as an epiphany of sense”, i.e. a concept which can be useful in cultural studies and in history of ideas. It is suggested that in the light of the postsecular thought, being an individual interpretation of the canon, the (Post)Modern apocrypha has a great epiphanic potential, which means that hiding minority truths, it reveals in fact some crucial, and crypto-theological, problems of the present. Drawing the axiological difference between “the unmasking apocrypha” (pseudo-gospel) and “the paraphrasing apocrypha” (epiphany of sense), the author claims that only the last one does actually incarnate Charles Taylor’s ideal of the authentic (and poetic) expression (of will), which helps in establishing an individual sense-making horizon as a positive response to the “heretical imperative” of (Post)Modernity.

This paper explores the complex connection between heritage, light and power in Shanghai since the late 19th Century, and seeks a new understanding of how mutually coupled legacies of modernity, socialism and cosmopolitanism continue to shape this city’s unique identity and image. It focuses on the recent ideological remake of the skyline along the Huangpu River, achieved largely through the flamboyant illumination designed in 2018. Combining a number of visual and textual sources with fieldwork, it reveals the persistent symbolic role the city has played in a triumphant socialist cause, and assesses how past promises of a new Shanghai and a bright future for China have been sustained in the Reform Era. It forms a preliminary attempt to depict what the author argues should be perceived and studied as the engineering of a new propaganda medium which intersects with urban space governance. The implications of this project are discussed in the context of the threats and opportunities for Shanghai in terms of maintaining the city’s unique character and meaning coming from its own history and culture, rather than in terms of Shanghai simply being a vehicle for China’s modernity.

The paper raises the question of the Bible’s reception in modern Bulgarian literature and literary studies in the perspective of postsecular thought. The main question is interpreted with relation to the place of the Bible in the Orthodox cultural context, as well as the well-established autostereotype of Bulgarian literature as reflecting the pragmatism and religious indifference of Bulgarians. Focusing on the case of Nikolay Raynov’s (1889–1954) blasphemous novel Between desert and life (1919) and the discussion on Pencho Slaveykov’s (1866–1912) ‘religiosity’, the paper reveals the problems with both the notion of ‘religious’ within the framework of modernity and the pressing issue of the Bulgarians’ (ir)religiosity from the point of view of national identity. In this context, the question of how Bulgarian literary studies are bound by the secularization narrative manifests itself as fundamental. The history of the interpretation of the ‘religious’ in literature seems to be a very good indicator of the Bulgarian path to modernity.

The article presents a few examples of novels and autobiographical forms which use the companion animal character, like “A Street Cat Named Bob” by James Bowen, “Cleo: How an Uppity Cat Helped Heal a Family” by Helen Brown, “A Dog's Purpose” by W. Bruce Cameron and “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. Some of the books were filmed, most of them became bestsellers, which raises the question about reasons of their popularity. As scholars claim, popular literature has, among others, a therapeutic function. This corresponds with therapeutic function of companion animals, like dogs and cats. Sociologist Adrian Franklin (1999) claims that companion animals provide us ontological security in modern societies. The article examines the ways of providing different kinds of security by using an animal character.

Since the old Europe, based on culture, civilization, and education disappeared, its foundations had to be restored on an economic basis by the European Coal and SteelCommunity. The new Europe was made possible by the treaty signed by Adenauer and de Gaulle, who, like Márai, were suspicious of the Soviet Union, and its modern and materialistic worldview, which collapsed in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall, nine months after Márai’s deat

Tekst omawia, z jednej strony, kwestię aktualności i przydatności tychże pojęć, a z drugiej możliwość krytycznego podejścia do nich.

The article brings out these similarities and differences, showing the writers’ attitude towards urbanization and, generally, to modernization processes as ambivalent, ambiguous, demanding to confront the city and oneself.

The afterthought on education is the consideration of the world of culture – the world of values. European culture is based on Aristotle`s thought. This is his metaphysics. The change of this paradigm occurs at the treshold of Modernity (N. Machiavelli) and it is followed by the thought of the Descartes; cogito. Here, the starting point is I, an individual, who undertakes the economic activity (Th. Hobbes, J. Locke). In the post-time the world of an individual undergoes the act of disintegration (contingency; R. Rorty) which can be associated with the state of “reassurance” (M. Gauchet). Today, there is no clarity as to what „education” really is.

France has been witnessing a proliferation of autobiographical literatures, also known as personal or intimate literatures, in recent decades. These stories take different forms and tell the life or life periods of an individual. These are life stories that claim a subjective ‘I’. In Iran, self-writing has begun, in recent years, to interest modern writers and critics who try, in more or less disguised forms, to tell in writing the story of their lives in a context where literature is always in direct connection with politics. In this context, the purpose of this article is to question the first self-writings that appeared in Iran. In what context has this self-literature emerged? How is the first self-writing of Iranian writers expressed? What is its real place? The first part of this article will be devoted to the context of the emergence of autobiography, and the relationship between modern society and self-writing from the eighteenth century in France, which will serve as a model to explain, in a second time, the framework of appearance of autobiography in Iran. The second part will analyze textual elements, the narration of A stone on a tomb, the first autobiography in Iran.

Tools are one of the basic carriers of culture. Most individual activities, including family practices, have their roots in objects. The introduction of new tools has always been resisted at the beginning because it violatedthe institutionalized forms of life. Contemporary processes that deeply change the family make old behaviour patterns affecting family life useless. Furthermore, tools continue to develop and new devices, such as thecomputer or the mobile phone, keep coming out. New communication technologies require new behaviour patterns that institutionalize various forms of family life occurring in liquid modernity.

The main focus of the current study is the role of periodicals in the emancipation of the woman in a modernizing Bulgarian society. From a social and political perspective, female virtues, rights and duties become an object of varied debates in Bulgaria at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. Women’s newspapers and magazines participate actively in these debates whilst familiarizing their female readers with the ideas and struggles of women in Western Europe, presenting diverse philosophical concepts, and discussing established cultural models. In these periodicals there appear materials which endeavour to cultivate models of emancipative behaviour; these publications include translations and authentic literature with a „feminine” axis. Female identity in this period gets formed within respective periodicals and the circles clinging to them, and it comes to represent a complex entity of, on the one hand, radical concepts stressing equality and female rights, and, on the other, conservative perceptions of the place of the woman in the modern household environment.

The paper attempts to answer the question, whether the processes of constructing identity in modern and post-modern times are similar or rather different. Modern society, in contrary to traditional (primitive, simple, pre-industrial) society, ruptures with collective and universal values that influenced human life and his identity. Since that moment, a man is no more strongly involved in social ties; modernity and post-modernity give him unquestionable autonomy in which individualism is the key-value. Therefore, accordingly to the new reality and new social (philosophical) conditions, the human identity is constructed. What are the rules of this process? Are the modernism and post-modernism two separate epochs and two separate realities that construct different cultural frames in which the process of building the identity and the identity itself take specific (opposite) directions? Or rather, as some sociologists prove (e.g. Anthony Giddens), post-modernism brings indeed the new quality of life but should be understood just as the continuation – strengthened form of the previous – modern stage of society? The attempt to answer the question, by presenting main scientific assumptions about subject matter, has been undertaken in this paper.

The aim of this text is to compare Simmel’s and Marx’s notions of two subjective faculties, desireand intellect, and the role each plays in modern capitalist societies. While Simmel understands the faculties asindividual, Marx’s critique of political economy presents their social, public, and trans-individual character. Thesetwo perspectives differ over the particular economic sphere in which we ought to locate the social production ofsubjectivity. Simmel locates such production in market exchange, the formal, symbolic expression of which ismoney, thereby leading to the notion of an intersubjective social reality as the effect of monetary relations betweendesiring and calculating individual subjects. Marx, for his part, treats both desire and intellect as trans-individualfaculties, and locates the social production of subjectivity in the sphere of production as subsumed under capital.

Opis:
The end of eschatology? Searching for a modus existendi according to (post-)modern Bulgarian apocryphaThe paper is an attempt to reflect on the place of eschatological themes in modern and post-modern Bulgarian literature from the viewpoint of the istory of ideas. The objective of the study is literary paraphrases of the evangelical history of the 20th and early 21st centuries, which are perceived as modern apocrypha and thus as evidence of philosophical exploration of the epoch. These are placed in the context of three worldview systems competing in Europe: Judeo-Christian, Gnostic (Esoteric), and rationalistic (the Enlightenment), which considered as a epistemological paradigms (or ideal types) serve only as a hermeneutic perspective. In this light, the authors’ paraphrases about God’s Kingdom (and its Prophet and Messiah) give a diagnosis about the present crisis (of values), and therefore define an evil, speaking in fact about the Bulgarian search for a Modus Existendi. Their soteriological proposal bring about an eschatological perspective, revealing some ethical concepts (hidden in the author’s anthropology). The subject of interest relates to sources of salvation (i.e. the higher good), which manifest itself in the concepts of time (and narrative). Therefore, at the philosophical heart of the paper is Charles Taylor’s idea about the fundamental relation between the concepts of good, self, narrative and society. The analyses are provided in the light of the philosophical reflections of Agata Bielik-Robson, Philip Rieff, Paul Ricoeur, Luis Dupré, and Jacob Taubes. The main aim of the paper is to reveal the progressive process of internalising the sources of salvation, which makes the eschatological perspective disappear. Therefore, after a brief presentation of the Judeo-Christian and Gnostic apocrypha from the first half of the 20th century,in which the promise of (some king of) salvation is still valid, it is shown that most of the Bulgarian apocrypha written after 1989 create an absolutely nihilistic message, since with the help of the positive pattern they give a radically negative interpretation of the world, and thus essentially announce a complete lack of hope for its improvement. Paradoxically however, by creating a world without a good end, by revealing the mechanism of slipping into a Neognostic worldview (based on the reversed Gnostic spiritual monism), the Bulgarian apocrypha illustrate the need for a (re)dynamisation of the axiological sphere, the need for a restoration of multidimensional existence. In consequence, a connection is pointed out – according to Taubes – between the condition of the eschatological man, who pins his hope on the future, and the messianic necessity to approve the ontological leap. Koniec eschatologii?

The basic question posed in this article refers to the problem of relevance of pre-modern moral categories to today’s ethical argumentation concerning business and finance. Since the financial crisis of 2007–2009 a revival of interest in the notion of greed has been noticeable. After the fall of Lehman Brothers in 2008, greed as an excessive desire for wealth became the popular catchword. However the question arises is it really possible that financial crisis resulted because of egoistic pursuit of self-interest and not because of regulatory neglect or others systemic failures? To answer this question the notion of greed is analyzed in its historical religious context of the evolution of Christian dogma in the Middle Ages. Greed as a cardinal sin was part of cultural construction of morality and something fundamental to the social order. Today however the use of this notion can do more harm than good. Instead of turning our attention to structural issues of the market it offers an explanation in terms of personal desires and idiosyncrasies. This type can easily trigger the scapegoating mechanism which soon can restore to life old prejudices and stereotypes.

The “double slab” is very well typologically defined and for this reason got a strong identity but at the same time it is quite flexible and easy to be adapted to different styles which span from pre-modernism to the contemporary styles passing through the Regionalism.

The experience of change is inscribed in social life. Nowadays, as a result of civilizational transformations, especially those related to the expansion of the sphere of communication due to development of the Internet and social media, these changes seem to be particularly dynamic. The aim of the Introduction from the Editor is to highlight this fact and to encourage a discussion on the strength and quality of the experience of change, especially in the generational perspective. In this context, the theme of generation is outlined and the question is raised to what extent this is still a viable concept and whether it is being misused today. The introduction also includes a justification of the subject matter of the texts collected in the volume.

There is no doubt that the Catholic Church is in a deep crisis. On the one hand, it is internally divided between supporters of the changes initiated during the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and conservatives opposing these changes in the name of the (Counter-Reformation) decisions made during the Council of Trent (1545–1563). On the other hand, the Church is involved in a number of political, financial, paedophile, etc. scandals. They prove the progressive loss of contact of this institution with the world as a place to preach the Gospel. For both of these reasons, the number of believers in countries considered Catholic is steadily decreasing. The purpose of this article is to correct or supplement this diagnosis. Historically, the Catholic Church – like many other religious organizations – has never been „spotless”. However, this did not prevent Catholics from identifying themselves with this institution as the depository of the Revealed Truth. Today is different. Many of them are experiencing an identity crisis. They cannot reconcile the Gospel (which takes the form of religious dogma) with the existential and moral challenges they face every day. The subject of the research undertaken in this article is to find answers to the questions (1) about the skills that allow them to reconcile one with the other and (2) about the role of the Church in the education of the community of the faithful.

Opis:
My purpose in what follows is to use ‘postsecularity’ as a transhistorical concept that underpins a new reading of modern religious history. My understanding of postsecularity is inspired by Jürgen Habermas. The postsecular is thought based on the dialectical conjunction of a farewell to traditional religious orthodoxy and a plea for a heterodox revival of religious intuitions and symbols. My main contention would be that postsecularism thus understood is hardly a new phenomenon and that it is in fact a persistent undercurrent within Western modernity, bringing together such authors as William Blake, Franz Rosenzweig, and Max Weber.

Opis:
The article tackles the topie of womanhood as a typical motif in Wanda Melcer' s poetry, a topie which in historical-literary studies has so far been insufficiently discussed. Through the analysis of selected poems from her two published volumes as well as from other scattered poems, the portrait of a modern woman as presented in that poetry has been sketched out. This woman is a person who takes part in civilisational, social and manner-related changes. Her relations to culture, art and literature, her vitality and being active in life, all attest to her abandonment of roles imposed by the patriarchal system. It has been shown that the "new woman" breaks taboos and is educated. Above all she is independent and selfreliant, desires success and thirsts for new experiences, as demonstrated by how she frequently changes her surroundings and appropriates new spaces. She moulds her identity in confrontation with the outside world, she is open to otherness and changeability. At the same time she maintains personal consistency. Her creative identity is related to acting upon the principle of choice, and not obligation. Due to the multitude of biographical references present, the portrait of the female heroine contained in Wanda Melcer's poetry can be seen as a self-portrait of the author herself.

Contemporarily, the traditional model of marriage is no longer the only accepted form of family life; there are many alternatives to that type of relationship. In post-modernity we face a rapid change in the perception of informal relationships as well as their dynamic development and increase in number. However, will cohabitation - which in the times of moral relativism, praise of freedom and individuality and democratisation of all aspects of human life becomes increasingly popular – eventually dominate and replace traditional marriage?

The article focuses on interior design from the first half of the 1950s. The interior spaces realized at that time in Poland elude unambiguous classifications, both in terms of formal and ideological aspects. I propose to look at the interiors from this time not in terms of style (difficult, complex, hybrid), but in a broader sense, as a political, socio-cultural phenomenon. The interiors were supposed to favor social modernization (assumed in the communist project), especially the idea of promotion and changing class habitus. They precisely modeled new forms of social life (cultural spaces), as well as family life, as they defined the way of eating, “being” (gastronomic interiors), spending free time and holidays. The leap into modernity was particularly noticeable in the architecture and interiors with which everyone interacted on a daily basis. Indicating the participation of interiors in the multifaceted modernization process can make us realize the complexity of the post-war reality, including the interior design from the first half of the 1950s, which was related to many spheres of social and cultural life.

The hybridity that is seen everywhere in symbolist poetry is not so much evidence of a temporary trend of the era following the interest in the crossing of species in nature as much as it is an attempt to confront the very nature of “art” itself. The time of the “quarrel of monsters” has passed, and the hybrids of contemporary poetry – competing for a place in the mythological scene that is symbolism – roam guiltless. And yet, beyond literary conventions, this mythological bestiary is anything but innocent and outdated; in fact, it embodies a genuine mythopoetic repertoire. For Mallarmé in particular, this hybrid bestiary reflects the illusive “Chimera” of poetry.

This paper is a short attempt at examining Tagore’s concept of modernity, by trying to understand what modernism and its relation to modernity means in this poet’s work. Considering the large range of his writings, essays and novels are selected according to what I consider to be the most relevant to the present investigation, favoring the more systematic writings among Tagore’’s novels and essays. Gora, however, another complex criticism of Nationalism, has not been included here, since its analysis would deserve a complete paper. It also does not focus on the introduction of European modernisms and European modernist expressions in India from a historical or aesthetic perspective. Rather, it underline a conceptual understanding through Tagore’s work of his own ideas, and the experience of modernism in India through his Indian writings. In so doing, I try to present the important differences of these concepts in an Indian colonial context, as well as the singularity of Tagore himself in his own context, hoping to contribute to an exploration of the poet’s talent and richness of expression and thinking.

He was especially heavily influenced by various thinkers from the Qajar period, particularly Mirza Agha Khan Kermani. This paper aims to present some of these influences, focusing mostly on the impact of the above-mentioned intellectuals. This is achieved by comparing elements of Kasravi’s thought with those of the thinkers that had preceded him. At the same time, some attention is given to Kasravi’s argument that—as he differed from them in various aspects—one cannot consider these influences to be direct loans from previous intel-lectuals, which is an argument that cannot be ignored. As it seems, Kasravi created an original system, yet he borrowed many ideas from his predecessors. At the same time it may be difficult to pin-point the exact source of these influences.

Because of these issues important and necessary it seems that re-thinking on modern understanding of time as a sociocultural category, which characterizes the quality and style of life of individuals as it exists in the current, post-modern space-time. Assuming that the time and its fulfillment, or lifestyle are subject to the relationship of interdependence, the analysis will undergo a proposition about the consistency / heterogeneity of the individual’s life style presented in the context of the division of temporal existence of the unit on time everyday and festive time. Considerations will address today’s youth. The discussion is mostly focused on the challenge the current political dynamics poses to the weak forms of social integration underpinning the project of European supra-national unification.

Nowadays speaking about the Church and defending it is a very big challenge. However a Polish Dominican Jacek Salij is not afraid of this task and he performs a kind of apology for the Church. In this article in several points the author shows originality and timeliness of the ecclesiological thought of Jacek Salij. The great advantage of his theology is communication and imagery. Certainly the apology of Church of the Black Friar gives modern man a new look at the Church.

The article discusses improvisational performances of the Philomaths in the context of the advent of a so-called modernity which correlated with a rapid change in people’s lifestyles. My starting point in examining the most characteristic phenomena of the literary life in Vilnius is the newly emerged economic environment: the enormous popularity of improvised poems (performed or written impromptu) and the development of the printed press. The analysis of the Philomaths’ performances, letters and poems focuses on various aspects of improvising, and not only on poetry presentations but also on a spontaneous way of living and the process of literary production. I argue that the improvisational activity of the Philomaths can be considered as an act of experimenting with and adapting various (traditional as well as innovative) literary patterns, and therefore as a poetic laboratory of the new romantic era.

Polish research on the Enlightenment developed in the first half of the 20th century but gained new momentum in the period after the Second World War. At that time, efforts were made to outline a picture of the phenomenon with a strong ideological character, but also a program of recognising important and hitherto not widely studied areas, above all of the literary cultures, was developed. A systematic exploration of sources was also started, and preparations for scientific editions of literary works were undertaken. These activities meet two permanently up-to-date requirements: an interdisciplinary, comparative, historical and ideological approach, as well as the necessary and constant contact with the source material. The research examined the source, sociological-cultural, structuralist and historical-ideological perspectives but focused on the Enlightenment itself. In this situation, the works should be primarily contextual. Based on the previous and new critical studies, it is necessary to undertake systematic research on the position and role of the Enlightenment in the development of Polish culture – in the context of old Polish culture and Romanticism and the phenomenon of modernity. A good reference to this issue is the already introduced concept of change, which allows to dynamise the image and situate the phenomenon of the Enlightenment in the broader time perspective. The second – related to the previous – problem that requires theoretical reflection and reflection on the source material is the anthropological perspective of viewing literature and culture. Such issues as ways of constructing the speaking “I” in different literary genres, ways of expressing the identity of the “I” and shaping the collective identity may shed new light on the epoch, require research consideration and reference to the main tendencies of the so-called new humanities. Such approaches will make it possible to introduce research on the Enlightenment into the dialogue with the latest tendencies of this humanities, test the usefulness of its proposals for historical works, and check the usefulness of new approaches.

The fashion promoted by Lodz accessories and lifestyle did not differ in any way from the latest European and world models. It was an expression of striving for modernity, for changing the way of thinking not only about women, but about the whole society. Introducing modern ideas into magazines resulted in the dissolution of old and obsolete forms.

In this way he shows the relationship between music and the issues of time, voice, materiality and corporeality, sound and vision, freedom and determinism, trauma and desire. The text also includes a reconstruction of some theses on the ephemeral and performative nature of sound and on listening as the domain of freedom. At the end conclusions are presented about the importance of the book in the context of contemporary musical thought.

The studied monograph concerns attempts at the transfer of modern, American ideals of childhood and the paradigms and norms of family life to Poland. Protective and pedagogic activities based on the rules of “modern philanthropy” are presented in a very noteworthy way, although the author does not employ numerous valuable studies and theoretic and methodological conceptions from Polish scholars.

The portrait of Muslims in politics, media, and literature has been mostly partial images of people separated from civilization. Since September 11 attacks, the Global War on Terror was fought on many fronts, including the ideological war of words and images that rages on the cinema screens across the globe as well as the pages of pop fiction. Western cultural production since September 11 has remained deeply influenced by the events of that single fateful day. The Twin Towers have gone up in flames again and again in a very large number of textual and visual narratives like novels, short stories, films, documentaries and prose analyses. To take a critical view to 9/11 and famous narratives it encumbered is the subject of this study. The Neo-orientalists say that many Muslims are Islamic fundamentalists who are “irreconcilable” with modern Western democratic values and culture. Different novels have been written after the September 11 attacks which are related explicitly or implicitly to with the effect of the event on the changing view of the people toward Muslims.

Representation of various modes, forms, symptoms and degrees of mental illnesses, frequent in The Street of Crocodiles, are analysed in two perspectives: psychological and literary-cultural. Using the tools of modern psychology, the article interprets the pathological symptoms of Touya, Maria, aunt Agatha, and various other characters, most importantly the advancing illness of father Joseph, who displays symptoms of schizophrenia. Schulz uses a language filled with metaphors, blurring the border between symptoms of illness and metaphors, between the imaginary and the real, and between health and illness, norm and pathology, between the human and the animal. Schulz’s representation of madness opposes the modern understanding, which is dominated by analytical, rationalist identification of an illness, related to a socially determined norm of mental health. It brings back the premodern quality to madness, which becomes a divine phenomenon, related to the pagan rite of fertility, to the “orgy of life” and Dionysian element, and to Freudian life drive. Dionysius and Freud meet in an area independent from the rules of culture and reason: the return to nature, including the nature in a human being. Here, madness becomes a “basic figure” and “the ultimate ur-schema”, as they belong to the unintellectual, basic, ecstatic sphere. This is related to the imperative of penetration of areas that threaten the “balance of the soul”, to address the topic that shows “the scar of removal”, and forces us to ask the question of limits of humanity.

Opis:
In article author takes advantage of sociological theory of German thinker – Ulrich Beck – to analysis of contemporary football. He assumes that idea of cosmopolitanization developed by Beck instances interesting analytical tool to the scrutiny of that sport. The concept of cosmopolitanization emphasising on interpenetration of global flows and local environment appears as adequate to such examination. From one perspective some actors in global football field (eg. FIFA) put a lot of pressure on the rest actors (expelling national teams from countries with unstable political situations), but on the other hand football field constitutes a mixture of various influences, different kinds of “cosmopolitanization” (“coerced”, “latent”, “non-deformed”) and local dimensions of modernity. In the case of football fans it is justified to cover every day experiences with football by notion of “banal cosmopolitanization”. The author considers necessity to create the new units of analysis in exploration of contemporary football. Units from classical sociology, derived from world of first modernity need to be replaced (or enriched at least) by ones prepared in result of cosmopolitan turn in social sciences. Simultaneously, like other spectrums of social life (science, politics, identities and so on), football is found under influences of conditions of global manufactured uncertainty and risk. In article there are a few instances of risks connected to football.

“Human beings have two fundamentally different ways of thinking about and engaging with the world.” Some variant of this proposition is shared by many thinkers across time. This paper focuses on the core similarities and the subtle (but significant) differences between Freud’s theory of primary and secondary processes, Karl Stern’s theory of the scientific and poetic modes of knowledge and Iain McGilchrist’s account of the differences between left and right-hemispheric competences, values and ways of “being-in-the-world”. It asks whether (or to what extent) the collective tendency to privilege one “way of knowing” over another promotes or inhibits optimal human development and cultural change and transformation.

Poetical project by Sorbian poet Róža Domašcyna fits into the category of „minor literature”, coined by  F.  Guattari  and  G.  Deleuze  in  1975.  Despite  its  inevitably  political,  ecological  and ideological local connotations, it is rooted in the experience of modernity, still unpopular among the contemporary Sorbian writers. Its main topics are: the devastation of Lusatian environment, erotic and cultural hybridity. Domašcyna uses the hybrid nature of Sorbian identity to create an post-modern subject, conscious of the non-transparent nature of language. The result is an original poetry, which suits the current comparative and postcolonial categories of interpretation.

On the conscience of bordersThis article reflects on the paradoxes inherent in our thinking on liminal territories, which ranges from affirmation to contestation. Its metaphorical title paraphrases Elias Canetti’s idea of the “conscience of words” and brings into focus the connection between discussions of borders and limits on the one hand, and the moral sensitivity of the members and cultural descendants of Judeo-Christian culture on the other. The ways in which people conceptualise borders and limits are presented from the perspective of the beginning (in the Gadamerian sense), i.e. the Bible, and the end (including, for example, Bauman’s concept of “liquid modernity” and Agamben’s post-secular idea of reality as a “camp”). The article concludes with a presentation of how the concepts of liminality and borders are presented (often metaphorically) by sociologists and linguists conducting field studies in Poland’s eastern and western borderlands. Sposoby konceptualizowania granic przedstawiono z perspektywy ustanowionego (w sensie Gadamerowskim) początku (Biblia) i końca (m.in. koncepcja „płynnej nowoczesności” Baumana czy „świata-obozu” w postsekularnej myśli Agambena). The main aim of this article is to demonstrate that contemporary gamers commit to a political nature of consuming digital game contents to facilitate cultural renewal. In illuminating how the rise of the cottagecore game at the turn of the 2020s has not only been driven by this cultural renewal but also intensified its major trajectories, the study contradicts critical assertions about the inimical relationship between gaming and real life which still remains in mainstream culture. This study aims to continue advancing the practice of game theorists who have shifted academic interest to the relevance of the digital game as a medium by conceptualizing the practice of enjoying a digital game as ‘consumption’ in the fashion defined by K. Marx. Building upon what might be termed an open-world game suggested a contradicting concept of playing a digital game, this study takes Harvest Moon as one of the early examples which inspires the swarming number of cottagecore games in the late 2010s and Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing as representatives of the rise of the cottagecore game, the study will illustrate how the rise of the cottagecore game reveals modernity of contemporary gamers who share a vision of digital game as a uniquely positioned medium for imagining a better world and themselves and, subsequently, facilitating a shift in cultural attitudes in a politically progressive manner.

The aim is to identify the links between Bulgarian modernity and Protestant thought and to problematize relations between cultural facts and the official discourse on the subject. The “Bulgarian case” illustrates the modern Orthodox-Protestant meeting and, in this sense, the problem of adaptation of “foreign” patterns in the process of the modernization of culture.

The essay examines a Bengali adaptation of Macbeth, namely Rudrapal Natak (published 1874) by Haralal Ray, juxtaposing it with differently accented commentaries on the play arising from the English-educated elites of 19th Bengal, and relating the play to the complex phenomenon of Hindu nationalism. This play remarkably translocates the mythos and ethos of Shakespeare’s original onto a Hindu field of signifiers, reformulating Shakespeare’s Witches as bhairavis (female hermits of a Tantric cult) who indulge unchallenged in ghastly rituals. It also tries to associate the gratuitous violence of the play with the fanciful yearning for a martial ideal of nation-building that formed a strand of the Hindu revivalist imaginary. If the depiction of the Witch-figures in Rudrapal undercuts the evocation of a monolithic and urbane Hindu sensibility that would be consistent with colonial modernity, the celebration of their violence may be read as an effort to emphasize the inclusivity (as well as autonomy) of the Hindu tradition and to defy the homogenizing expectations of Western enlightenment

Opis:
Purpose: Modernity consists of many confl icting aspects: It brings many empty promises, yet has resulted in new institutions that create bridges between the values and interests of millions of people who seek freedom, prosperity, quality of life, strengthened democracy and social justice. In this paper I attempt to a gain and loss account against modernity, because institutional rules are not only conducive to cooperative interactions, but to hostile interactions as well. People are not always guided by moral commitment, but rather more often driven by cold calculation or coercion. Methodology: Modernity has at least three defi nitions. The fi rst defi nition is based on ideas that took over the imagination of the era. The second defi nition is based on an analysis of the behavior of people who respond to reason as well as emotion and believe that they act more rationally than their ancestors or the traditional “others”. The third defi nition is the one closest to my heart, consisting of the use of institutional categories. Institutions offer practical ways of connecting ideas and people. The challenge for them is the result of deepening local and national interdependencies, but increasingly often also regional (e.g. European) and global. Interdependencies are the result of the scientifi c and technological revolution, global markets, global governance mechanisms, the emergence of new social forces and cultural confl icts (against the background of reconciling identity and differences). Conclusions: The most important task is to identify the mechanisms of complex systems so that people know how to act under conditions of uncertainty, risk and crisis. Hence, the expectations toward institutions often exceed their abilities. Even though new institutions are being created and old ones are being fixed, we are witnessing and participating in, institutional paralysis and the decay (e.g. corruption). In this situation, it is imperative not only to improve control methods (e.g. legal), but also to resort to normative systems (values and identity) and knowledge (competence and skills). The source of this paralysis is often man himself, convinced of his own maturity and equipped with all sorts of rights, but manipulated on a scale not yet seen in the past. We are experiencing our own struggle as to what roles are closest to us, e.g. consumer, investor, or citizen? Research Implications: Modernity is an emblematic, but confusing term. Therefore, the most important task is to identify the activities of complex systems, so that people know how to act under conditions of uncertainty, risk and crisis. People – agencies must operate in structures that defi ne the boundaries of their actions. The main task of social sciences is to identify the conditions for the construction of successful confi gurations of agencies and structures. Originality: Sometimes the “old” is better than the “new”, but to adopt this as a principle of life would be a mistake. It is better to think that the “new” is a metamorphosis of the “old”, sometimes expected, sometimes not. Based on the example of capitalism – fi rst commercial capitalism, then industrial capitalism, and today fi nancial capitalism – I demonstrate how the mechanisms of institutional morphogenesis work, with emphasis on structured cooperation and organized confl ict.

The article is devoted to analysis of various countercultures aspects. Second vector is originated of counterculture of the 1960s. The author states that counterculture exist without a singular identity. It is a space of hybridity and heterogenity. On the other hand counterculture is related to the concept of contemporary ambivalence as well it transforms of affective experience of everyday life. Another feature of counterculture is connected with the conviction that counterculture stands against of dominant culture. Also the author puts counterculture movements against various aspects of new american modernity including reconstruction of the practice of the hegemony, as well as through popular culture and reconstruction of the "left" and "right" idelogy and practice.

Incoherence and lack of consequence in endeavors, fragmentation and scattering of various domains of individual's activity appear to be unalienable attributes of 'post-modern' life style. The article contains the characteristic of the four types of post-modern self: the stroller (flâneur), the vagabond, the tourist and the player. Although these types were known in previous epochs, there are two factors that render them 'post-modern': (1) the fact that they have become a 'norm' of behavior in everyday life while previously their role was rather marginal; (2) their simultaneous co-occurrence in the lives of the same people in the same fragments of life, while in 'pre-modern' times their presence in the life of individuals was disjunctive - they were subject to choice; presently one does not choose among them, what is more one does not even need to choose. They are just present. The polyvalence of this situation gives individuals the feeling of freedom, yet there are also negative sides to it. 'Post-modernity' forms a certain stage of the development of individuals and social relations.

The subject of the paper is a dispute of the Norwid’s and Baudelaire’s generation over romanticism, a dispute treated as a continuation of intro-romantic polemics. The aim of this comparative analysis is to present the ways of defining poets relative to romantic paradigm established by the “great men” (Mickiewicz, Hugo). This ways are shown primarily in literary texts – and not only through problematic debate, but also through the realization of a concrete, different from the romantic model of poetry. In the case of Norwid and Baudelaire we are dealing with great poets deeply rooted in Romanticism, who derive from this tradition, but proposing – and more in practice than in theory – their own path of modern lyricism. are focuses on early works: Baudelaire Fanfarlo on the one hand and early Norwid fantasies and dramas (Marzenie – Dream, Chwila myśli – Moment of thought, Wieczór w Pustkach – Evening in the Void, Noc tysiączna druga – Second Thousandth Night...) on the other hand. The ambivalent attitude of both writers to romanticism – “creative betrayal,” which assumes continuity and rupture at the same time, is revealed in the heroes’ creations – yet romantic, but criticizing romantic idealism, the fantasy, dreams. This criticism – due to the “stigmatization by romanticism” also becomes self-criticism.

Opis:
The article presents B. Leśmian as a poet involved in his self-imposed task of promoting a return to primeval nature, but, at the same time, somebody who is fully aware of the utopian character of thus formulated and adopted assumptions. The two contradictory approaches converge in a poetic figure of desire. This particular urge is treated as a model of the imagination of the poet, who creates his poetical world knowing that the ultimate aim is unattainable but constitutes the ideal of poetry and can only be a state of cognitive assurance and self-knowledge or, alternatively, a situation of ontological stability and fulfilment. However, to reach this utmost goal, either on the poetical plane or on the existentialist, epistemological and ontological plane, to fulfill the cherished desires, is not possible within the poetical world created by Leśmian. The raison d’etre of the self manifested by the protagonists of his poems as well as a justification of this poetry is the very striving towards the goal. The article shows the relevant dimensions of that desire as a metapoetical figure, anthropological and existentialist figures and epistemological and ontological figures. It further presents the opposition and the inner conflict within the modern views of the poet, who, consciously inscribes into his project its impracticability. The distance towards the current times and towards the idealistic assumptions of his own poetical programme constitutes the intrinsic originality of Leśmian’s poems.

Opis:
In this article, I analyze moral perceptions of modernity in Rio de Janeiro between the 1850s and 1860s. Against a long theoretical tradition in the Latin American social sciences that emphasizes nineteenth-century modernity in the region as an opaque process (a mere attempt at imitating the Western European “pure” model), I would like to follow another theoretical path; that is, my analysis focuses on tangible experiences of modernity during the apogee of the Brazilian Empire. This research looks to newspapers, schoolbooks, books, and speeches delivered by the cultural elite in the public sphere. I analyze how moral perceptions of urban life in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro can be articulated into a structure based on processes of education. In other words, beyond the materiality in urban space (public street lighting, oil and gas companies, urban cleanliness, public gardens, etc.), there is an implicit relationship between the inner problems (political turbulence, poverty, and moral management of the urban population) and the moral content of modernity (which can be understood in terms of structural prescriptions). These processes of education, instead of an institution-centered practice concentrated only on schools, elaborate a diffuse set of prescriptions whose nexus is constituted by the content of morality. The paper reflects on the conditions of production and reproduction of modernity in a peripheral area (former colonial space) in the nineteenth century.

This paper aims to outline the processes of formation of industrial design on a concrete example of the art and industrial landscape of Silesia, with particular regard to the role played by non-obvious genres, media and practices. It is about processes of developing of instances of pluralism and areas of “non-obviousness” at the interface of artistic, economic and social aspects, i.e. areas and phenomena that overlapped or were only vaguely defined, in the late 19th and turn of the 20th century. It is reflected as a result of many developments that began during the industrial revolution and are still affecting the world today, politically, economically, socially and culturally.

Paul Feyerabend’s philosophy, mainly due to his radically pluralistic claims, may be regarded as an example of postmodern philosophy of science. At the same time Feyerabend’s thought contains some strictly modern ideas and noticing those ideas is important for proper reading of his works. In this paper, in order to properly understand this conceptual tension, I compare Feyerabend’s philosophy with Bruno Latour’s idea of amodernity. The first part of the paper presents modern and postmodern themes present in Feyerabend’s works. The second part elucidates the concept of amodernity expounded by Latour in the essay We have never been modern. In the third part I show that Feyerabend’s philosophy displays all of the most important features of amodern way of thinking (in Latour’s sense). In the final section I discuss how the interpretation of Feyerabend’s thought as an example of amodern philosophy may be fruitful in further research.

The aim of this article is the theoretical analysis of the situation of an individual existing in contemporary socio-cultural reality in the context of identity dilemmas, trust and risk. Considerations have been made about the nature of such categories as trust, risk, anxiety, and a sense of ontological security. This is not without significance for the quality of the condition of modern man, which also implies the need for the reconsideration of and pedagogical activities in the field of education and socialization of individuals participating in contemporary socio-cultural reality.

Opis:
The paper discusses modernisation as viewed by some authors publishing at the Centre of Political Thought. Their reflections focus on a variety of aspects of this issue: efforts to catch up with Western countries in terms of civilisational growth, acceleration of the changes bringing new social phenomena, breaking with the existing social order and trying to transform it profoundly, applying institutionalsolutions from Western countries in Poland, and a multitude of possible variants of modernisation. As regards the Polish path of modernisation, these authors note, in particular, its imitative character, manifested in the transplantation of political, economic and cultural models drawn from the West. On this account, Polish culture is regarded as an obstacle on the way to modernity. Their assessment of such tendencies is negative since modernisation need not presuppose the rejection of native tradition, as it can become an inseparable component of modernisation.

Opis:
Researchers analysing the literary output by the author of The Ring of a Great Lady (Pierścień Wielkiej Damy) hold a continuous debate on his affinity with Romaticism or Modernism. The question about the modernity of Norwidian thought is at the same time a difficult question about the modernity of Polish Romanticism. To what extent was he involved in the artistic ideas originated by his great predecessors – Mickiewicz, Słowacki and Krasiński – and to what extent is his thought genuinely exceptional and ground-breaking? In the article, its author decides to focus on Norwid’s later dramatic output, since it was fully subordinated to modern reflection and presented the author of Cleopatra and Caesar (Kleopatra i Cezar) as a forerunner of concepts coined by such prominent critics of modernity as René Girard, Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault.
