Opis:
This paper investigates the effect of foliar fertilisation with protein biostimulators on chlorophyll and carotenoid levels in winter wheat. The results obtained show a significant increase in photosynthetic pigments for samples II and III, which were plants treated with biostimulants containing collagen hydrolysate and sodium salicylate and collagen and keratin hydrolysate in combination with titanium ascorbate (Bio-2 and Bio-3, respectively). The study also confirmed that the extraction efficiency of chlorophyll and carotenoids depends on the type of solvent. The results obtained allow the conclusion to be drawn that the most favourable solvent for the extraction of photosynthetic pigments from wheat leaves is ethanol.

Opis:
Astaxanthin and canthaxanthin are carotenoids produced mainly by algae, fungi and bacteria. These dyes give the characteristic pink-orange color to salmon, shrimp and flamingo feathers. In the case of farm animals, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin are added to the feed, and their amount is strictly established and should not exceed certain limits. The article presents a method of determination of astaxanthin and canthaxanthin by HPLC method. This analysis determines whether these dyes are detected in the product and what their content are. This makes it possible to assess compliance with the limits and often also to determine the origin of the product.
Astaksantyna i kantaksantyna to karotenoidy wytwarzane głównie przez algi, grzyby i bakterie. Barwniki te nadają charakterystyczny różowo-pomarańczowy kolor piórom łososi, krewetek i flamingów.

Opis:
Fortunella margarita is an excellent source of acids, sugars and phenolic compounds, the cultivation of which has become popular in Jordan in the last few years. The aim was to observe the quality of the kumquat fruits cultivated in Irbid and the Ghor Valley. Physical properties such as size, density, sphericity, porosity and color were measured. Total titrable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), Ascorbic Acid (AA), pH and phenolic compounds were evaluated in the pulp-rind extract. Total phenols (TPC), flavonoids and carotenoids were measured by spectrophotometry at 765, 430 and 470–664 nm, respectively. High porosity (67%), fruit size (37.4 mm) and juice yield (25.5%) were achieved in the Ghor kumquat crop. The high levels of TPC (2039.2 mg GAE/100 g), AA (0.361 mg/ml) and carotenoids (1.15 mg/100 g) registered in this same crop, attribute it better functional and medicinal properties. Moreover, the Ghor cultivation presented better taste, associated with high values of pH (3.47), TSS (5%) and low levels of TTA (1.55%). The high concentration of total carotenoids recorded in the Ghor’s kumquat was associated with the intense and bright orange color of its rind, related with high values of the color coordinates + a, + b and L of the CIELab system. The great porosity of its rind, makes the kumquat a suitable fruit for impregnating with salt or sugar solutions as well as developing new kumquat products with better flavor and nutritional value. The ranges found in the properties of kumquat crops, are attributed to the different temperatures of Ghor and Irbid.

Cadmium wastewater released by human activities will eventually enter the aquatic environment. Living organism that lives around could potentially exposed by these cadmium, including C. gracilis which play a critical role as a primary producer. Cadmium can reduce the growth rate and pigment content in C. gracilis. Therefore, toxicity testing becomes important to do considering that C. gracilis has many benefits such as shrimp feed and have active compounds for antibacterial and biodiesel. Toxicity test was performed in 96-hours with a series of concentration 0, 0.56, 1.0, 1.8, 3.2, 5.6 mg/L. IC50 cadmium results in concentrated cell density and chlorophyll-a C. gracilis were 1.62 mg/L and 3.4 mg/L, while carotenoids were not in accordance with the contribution of cadmium. NOEC and cadmium LOEC to C. gracilis cell density were 0.56 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L.

Hop cones (Humulus lupulus L.) are mainly used as the main flavoring ingredient in beer production. Cones contain ac-tive compounds that determine not only the aromatic characteristic, but also functional properties. The aim of this study was to determine the basic anatomical characteristics of hops of the following varieties: Marynka, Lubelski, Magnum, and the assessment of the content of selected phytochemicals in water extracts. The different level of the content of chlorophyll depending on the cultivar studied was shown. The cones of the Marynka variety (0.49 mg/g) had the highest content of to-tal chlorophylls. All tested hop cone extracts showed a similar content of carotenoid pigments. The highest amount of pol-yphenolic acids was found in extracts prepared from the Lubelski variety cones (5.22 mg chlorogenic acid/g), and the lowest in the cones of Marynka variety (3.36 mg chlorogenic acid/g). Based on the research, it was shown that hop cones can be a good raw material for the production of water extracts due to the high content of biologically active compounds. Hop cones can be a raw material for the production of functional food.

Polifenolokwasy w największej ilości znajdowały się w ekstraktach sporządzonych z szyszek odmiany Lubelski (5,22 mg kwasu chlorogenowego/g), a w najmniejszej w szyszkach odmiany Marynka (3,36 mg kwasu chlorogenowego/g).

The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional habits of AMD patients from the Szczecin region. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, progressive eye disease that results in loss of central vision. The study was conducted in the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Independent Public Teaching Hospital No. 2, Pomeranian Medical University (PUM) in Szczecin among 46 subjects. The interview method was used using the author's questionnaire, which contained questions about age, body weight and height, sex, composition of the three-day menu and the form of AMD. Insufficient intake of numerous nutrients (with lutein and zeaxanthin among them) has been shown, which may accelerate the progression of the disease. In addition, patients were underweight, which may increase the risk of protein-energy malnutrition that may affect the development of AMD.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to present the sedimentological and geochemical character of Krosno Beds from the Gorlice fold and the Stróże Thrust Sheet. Based on field work, two measured sections were made: western Stróże with true thickness of 300 m and eastern Lipinki with true thickness of 227 m. Within them, six sedimentary facies described in the Gorlice profile were identified and three newly recognized facies were distinguished. These facies have been interpreted in the framework of depositional mechanisms. Sedimentary structures were identified and described, including those important for reconstruct the sedimentation environment: hummocky-cross stratification (HCS) and trough cross stratification. Another element of the analysis is compilation of the measured field sections and their correlation with well logs from the Gorlice-12 and L-OU1 wells. The correlation enabled to show similarities of lithological development within the Gorlice fold and differences in relation to the Stróże Thrust Sheet profile. Eight samples of mudstone (Stróże profile 3 samples: S5–S7, Lipinki profile 5 samples: L3–L8) were collected and subjected to geochemical biomarkers analysis. The aim of the biomarkers study was to specify the character of the sedimentation environment and to confirm the biological/bacterial origin of compounds from the aryl isoprenoids group. Fifteen samples of bitumen extracts derived from two sections: Stróże in the Biała riverbed in the western part and Lipinka in the Libuszanka stream bed in the eastern part were selected for sample collection and testing. Aryl isoprenoids (short and medium chain) and higher diaryl isoprenoids have been identified. In addition, higher aromatic C40 carotenoids have been identified such as: isorenieratane, β-paleorenieratane, β-isorenieratane, β-renierapurpurane, chlorobactane and okenane. These are considered as a further evidence of the bacterial origin of aryl isoprenoids. The indices specifying the sedimentation environment were calculated: AIR, and isorenieratan/phenanthrene index. Samples were tested for: the character of the sedimentary environment, including photic zone anoxia (PZA) and its duration, depth of chemocline and bacterial activity during sedimentation. The results of the samples analysis used in this work were compared with the archival results of samples analysis (the Gorlice fold area).

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of butterfly pea leaf as a source of carotenoids on the quality of the color of the heads of swordtail fish. The study was conducted at the Aquaculture Laboratory, Building 4, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University, from March to April 2019. The research method used an experimental approach with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 3 replications. Those treatments are 0%, 1%, 6% and 12% of butterfly pea leaf meal. The parameters observed included changes in head color quality, absolute weight growth, absolute length growth and water quality. Color observation data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis analysis if there were differences between treatments. Multiple comparisons were performed with the Z test with a confidence level of 95%. Data on the length of growth rates and absolute weights were analyzed using analysis of variance via the F test. Here, 95% was set as the confidence level. If there were differences between treatments, this was followed by Duncan test with a confidence level of 95%. The results showed that the addition of 6% butterfly pea leaf meal in commercial feed was able to improve the best color on the part of the swordtail fish head. This saw an average color score 9.56 and color value of 82.2. Addition of carotenoids in feed, however, did not significantly influence the growth of absolute weight or length and water quality.

Consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables can lower the risk of developing numerous chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, due to the presence of multiple antioxidants. Horticultural produce consumed in Cyprus include a large variety of fruits and vegetables, most of which are common components of a Mediterranean-style diet due to the island’s localization. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant composition and activity of the edible portion of ten fruits and ten vegetables commonly consumed in Cyprus. Total phenolics, total anthocyanins, ascorbic acid and carotenoids contents were determined, while the in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by three assays. Antioxidant activity showed great variation, with the highest values found in green olives, capers and red chili peppers and in correlation with total phenolic content. Ascorbic acid was detected in large quantities in parsley, coriander, red guavas and red chili peppers, while red chili peppers, capers and coriander had high levels of carotenoids. Furthermore, sweet cherries, red grapes, and red apples contained significant amounts of anthocyanins. Statistical analysis revealed that phenolic compounds are the most potent antioxidants in fruit and vegetables, while total anthocyanins had a weak contribution to their antioxidant activity. The present study could be a guide for Cypriot as well as Mediterranean diet health-conscious consumers to select specific fruits and vegetables as dietary components. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study thoroughly describing the antioxidant composition and activity of a wide array of important Cypriot horticultural products.

Emulsions are commonly used to improve aesthetics but they may also be applied to deliver active ingredients. Recently, a group of pigments known as carotenoids has been added to emulsions as an active compound mainly due to their antioxidant properties. The stability of these formulations is a critical parameter for both, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. Therefore, in this study two analytical methods, multiple light scattering and laser diffraction, were tested to determine the stability of various emulsions containing carotenoids (β-carotene, lycopene, astaxanthin). Even small changes in stability of emulsions were determined very early. The results of both methods proved that the type of carotenoid used did not influence the emulsions' stability. The stability of emulsions depends mainly on the preparation methods and on the type of emulsifier applied.

Opis:
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and cataracts are the most common eye diseases. They are predominantly caused by insufficient amounts of antioxidants in the body, which include lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and micronutrients. The positive properties of these biologically active substances affect the neutralization of reactive oxygen species, slow absorption of UV radiation, and improve blood supply to the structural elements of the eye. Deficiency of these substances has a negative effect on the functioning of the eye, leading to degeneration of its structures. Presently, a fully effective method of treatment has not been discovered, therefore preventative measures, especially those including a healthy diet and lifestyle, are highly important as the human body cannot synthesize these beneficial substances. This requires increasing public awareness concerning products with high nutritional value, which should be included in people's daily diet.

Material and methods. The herbicide at concentrations of 0.56; 5.63 or 56.3 μM was used in a study on seedlings grown in hydroponic cultures in controlled light and temperature conditions. In the experiment the roots of maize seedlings were exposed to propaquizafop for 7 days. Also, seedling shoots were exposed by their immersing for 30 seconds in the investigated propaquizafop concentrations. We assessed the impact of propaquizafop on the seedlings elongation of primary roots and shoots. The content of anthocyanins in epicotyls and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total carotenoids) in leaves were also measured. Results. A weaker effect on shoot growth was found when the roots of sweet maize seedlings were exposed to propaquizafop than was the case in the application of the herbicide to shoot. Application of the herbicide to the root zone also had little effect on the levels of chlorophylls and carotenoids, or on the ratios between them, in the leaves. The presumed responsibility for this effect is a weak uptake of the herbicide by the roots and / or its transport to the leaves of the maize seedlings. Conclusion. Propaquizafop has a smaller effect on sweet maize seedlings when applied to the root zone than it has after foliar exposition. A decline of anthocyanin content under the influence of low doses of propaquizafop suggests that it has a greater effect on the metabolism of phenylpropanoids than other inhibitors of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase have.

Opis:
The potato is one of the most common elements of everyday human diet due to its high nutritional and culinary value. Potato tubers provide mainly energy in the form of carbohydrates and also some other nu-trients, which include carotenoids as compounds linked to oxidation-preventing mechanisms. The main assi-milable carotenoids present in cultivated potato are lutein and zeaxanthin. Potato cultivars rich in carotenoids are a subject of increasing consideration in breeding for improvement of the nutritional quality of tubers. The paper describes the spectrophotometric method of evaluation of total and individual carotenoids content in potato tubers.
