    This paper proposes to examine the diverse ways that conceptions of politics can be retrieved from the Meditations of the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius. It claims that the Meditations are in a certain sense an important work on politics, owing to the theoretical and practical insights into not only (political) leadership, but also the (political) system and arrangements. As a matter of fact, a number of principles and codes of conduct are proposed by the Stoic philosopher who is faithful to the understanding of philosophy as being primarily a “way of life.” However, despite the attractive and inspiring treatments of human nature, society, and virtues that are at the heart of the “political” agenda of Marcus Aurelius, the Meditations, due to its “dislocated” nature, does not offer a fully-fledged political theory, at least as “politics” is understood today.

    Religiousness related to the Passion was developing particularly in the monastic circles and included practicing various forms of godliness, amongst others, handwritten and printed reflections. The 1641 translation of the Meditation on the Holiest Wounds of our Saviour from Italian was dedicated to the Lviv abbess of the Benedictine Sisters, Magdalena Dorota Daniłowiczówna. The article, in the context of the Passion spirituality of the convent, analyzes the content of the text and possible circumstances of its creation as well as points to the references of the text to the character of abbess’ activity and her piety. It also points to the brotherly references of the unanalyzed manuscript, currently stored in Saint Petersburg.

    This article is devoted to the problem of Emperor Marcus Aurelius' (reigned 161-180 after Christ) attitude and policy towards Christians, based on his famous spiritual diary - which has been preserved in Polish scholarly and cultural literature under the title of "Meditations". The starting point for the deliberations is the commonly accepted observation that Marcus Aurelius was one of the most sensitive, noble and upright men to have sat on the imperial throne in the history of the Roman Empire for several centuries. However, many scholars have been surprised to learn that it was during the reign of this noble emperor-philosopher, a gentle man who was a proponent of Stoicism, which at first sight had so much in common with Christian philosophy, that major persecutions of Christians took place, mainly in Gaul (Lugdunum, today: Lyon) in 177. This article is an attempt to explain the contradiction of how it was possible for a man of such great sensitivity and personal culture to allow the aforementioned acts of repression.
    Artykuł poświęcony został problemowi postawy i polityki cesarza Marka Aureliusza (panował w l. 161–180 po Chr.) wobec chrześcjian, w oparciu o jego słynny duchowy pamiętnik – funkcjonujący w polskiej literaturze naukowej i kulturze pod tytułem "Rozmyślania". Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest uznawana powszechnie słuszna obserwacja, że Marek Aureliusz był jednym z najbardziej wrażliwych, szlachetnych i prawych ludzi, jacy w przeciągu kilkuwiekowej historii Imperium Romanum zasiadali na tronie cesarskim. U wielu badaczy budził jednak zdziwienie fakt, że to właśnie za rządów tego szlachetnego cesarza-filozofa, człowieka łagodnego i hołdującego, mającemu tak wiele na pierwszy rzut oka wspólnego z filozofią chrześcijańską, stoicyzmowi, doszło do poważniejszych prześladowań chrześcijan, głównie w Galii (Lugdunum, dzisiaj: Lyon) – w roku 177. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą wyjaśnienia sprzeczności, jak możliwe było, aby człowiek o tak ogromnej wrażliwości i kulturze osobistej mógł pozwolić na wspomniane akty represji.

    W niniejszym artykule staram się przedstawić oś sporu pomiędzy Hobbesem i Descartesem na gruncie Medytacji, oraz jego najważniejsze momenty. Skupiam się przede wszystkim na analizie najważniejszych postawionych przez Hobbesa zarzutów i rekonstrukcji wybranych jego poglądów, które wówczas można było odnaleźć jedynie w The Elements of Law, Natural and Politic. Dzieło to było jego pierwszą większą i spójną próbą wypowiedzi na zagadnienia teoriopoznawcze i społeczne; staram się bronić tezy, że zrozumienie treści Zarzutów wymaga znajomości owego dzieła. Dojrzała forma dzieła świadczy o tym, że Anglik już wówczas miał swoje poglądy przemyślane i mógł czuć się dość pewnie formułując z ich perspektywy uwagi krytyczne względem filozofii Descartes’a, której jak się wydaje mógł on niejedno zawdzięczać.
    In this article I endeavour to present the axis of the dispute between Hobbes and Descartes on the ground of Meditation, and its most important moments. I focus primarily on the analysis of the most important accusations made by Hobbes and the reconstruction of some of his views, which at the time could only be found in The Elements of Law, Nature, and Politics. This work was the first major and coherent attempt to speak out on cognitive-theory and social issues; I strive to defend the thesis that understanding the content of Objections requires knowledge of this work. The mature form of the work shows that the Englishman already had his views well thought-out and could feel quite confident in formulating from their perspective critical remarks on Descartes’s philosophy, to which, it seems, he may have owed quite a lot.

    This paper is based on the materials found in the Jagiellonian Library – unpublished manuscripts of Pawlicki’s translations of two works by Descartes. The starting point for the analyses is a short outline of the history of the reception of the French philosopher’s works in Poland. The author also draws comparisons between Pawlicki’s translations and translations of Discourse on the method which are well embedded in the Polish philosophical tradition by Wojciech Dobrzycki (1878) and Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński (1918), as well as Pawlicki’s translation of Meditations with translations of Ignacy Karol Dworzaczek (1885) and Maria Ajdukiewiczowa (1948). Pawlicki worked on his translations between Romanticism and Positivism, when Descartes’ works were in general negatively received. The comparison of these translations and comments on them found in later translations done by Wiktor Wąsik in so called “critical” period will allow one to grasp some developing tendencies in Polish philosophy of the 19th century. This paper will also fill in the gap in the history of Polish philosophy concerning the reception of Descartes’ philosophy in 19th-century Poland.

    Opis:
    The subject of the article is the analysis of 17th century meditations about the Resurrection of Christ included in the manuscript collection of the Norbertine Sisters in Zwierzyniec. The reflection covers the traditions about the triumph of the glorified Lord, the women’s visit to the Lord’s Tomb, the announcement of the Resurrection to the women, Christ offering fish to his disciples, Christ’s meeting with Mary Magdalene and the disciples on their way to Emaus. The mode of presentation of these themes emphasizes a number of dogmas and truths of faith, mostly about the Resurrection of Christ and his divine nature. It is demonstrated in the article that the Norbertine texts were based not only on Gospels, but also on apocryphal sources and emblematic representations. The deliberations clarify that the author probably intended not only to report the course of events, but first of all to give a testimony of faith, to assert the real resurrection of the crucified Christ. An insight into the issue of the Resurrection of Christ in the light of biblical tradition and Old Polish literature is also offered.

    Opis:
    Both the Synod of Bishops of 1990 which was dedicated to the formation of priests and the Exhortation of John Paul II, “Pastores Dabo Vobis” have had an essential influence on the reorganization of the priestly formation in the Church. During the preparations for the Synod, John Paul II throughout one year, during his Angelus meditations undertook the most important to-pics concerning the priesthood and the priestly formation. The Pope discus-sed the challenges and tasks of the priests of to-day and of the candidates to the priesthood. He pointed to the need of the Church’s prayer for vocations, the role of family and seminary, as preparing communities for the priesthood. He presented some important dimensions of the priesthood such as its Trinitarian nature, its close relationship with Christ and the cooperation of priests with the power of the Holy Spirit. He showed a special relationship of priests with the Mary, Mother of God who is an educator of the priestly vocations and Mother of priests. Then he emphasized that the priests should be men of faith, hope and love, living in fraternal communion and in the unity with God, prayerful, immersed in God’s wisdom. He emphasized that the priests must live radicalism of the Gospel, especially the evangelical counsels: poverty, obedience, chastity of priestly celibacy. Finally the Pope called attention to the activity of priests, which should manifest themselves as collaborators of God, as ministers of reconciliation and of the Eucharist, as men capable for sacrifice, sensible for the suffering and disposed for missionary work.
