Background: The Regulation of the Minister of Health issued on 16th August 2018 addressed the matter of the organizational standard of perinatal care which determines guidelines concerning care of the newborn baby, in which skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding are important. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to explore women’s preferences concerning care of the newborn in the immediate postpartum period. Material and methods: 130 patients attending the Pro-Familia specialist hospital in Rzeszow participated in this research. The cohort consisted of pregnant women who had attended the doctor supervising their pregnancy before delivery. The research was carried out from March to April 2013 and the data collected was statistically analyzed, assuming a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Pregnant women most often expressed a preference of an accompanying person to cut the newborn’s umbilical cord (59.2%), with 23.1% preferring a member of the medical team to do so. The majority (89.2%) of pregnant women wanted their baby to be laid on their stomach immediately following delivery to ensure skin-to-skin contact. In terms of Apgar scoring, 69.2% of women expected information about the Apgar score of their newborn immediately after delivery. Most women (60%) wished their newborn to be given routine vaccinations for hepatitis B and tuberculosis (BCG). Patients most often declare that they want to breastfeed exclusively (77.7%), with 29.2% of women expressing a wish to obtain more information about breastfeeding and 31.5% wishing to consult with a lactation specialist. Conclusions: Pregnant women expect skin-to-skin contact immediately after delivery, the umbilical cord to be cut by an accompanying person and would like to be told their newborn’s Apgar score. The women studied prefer exclusively breastfeeding, and express a wish to obtain information regarding lactation, and expect to be able to consult with a lactation specialist.

Background: The quality of medical services offered is a factor that strongly determines patient satisfaction. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate parent’s satisfaction with the care and conditions experienced during their child’s stay in a Pediatric Ward. Material and methods: The study involved 293 parents from two pediatric wards of the Clinical Provincial Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszow. The PASAT PEDIATRIA package was used as a research tool. Results: The functioning of the admission room was good. Parents of children on the Pediatric Ward ranked medical and nursing friendliness the highest (mean = 4.34 and 4.37, respectively), followed by the availability of doctors (mean = 3.97) and the amount of time they devoted to the patient’s family (mean = 3.97). Respondents assessed the ward best in terms of the cleanliness of the room (mean = 4.12) and the possibility of spending free time in an interesting way (mean = 4.07). Conclusions: Parents of children hospitalized in the Pediatric Ward were slightly more satisfied with nursing than medical care. Doctors should make every effort to improve the availability and amount of time devoted to the child’s family. The overall assessment of the conditions in the ward was “fairly good”, indicating the need for monitoring and improvement.

Microelements and trace elements play a vital role in the body. Low quantities of these elements are essential to ensure proper metabolic processes. The aim of the thesis was to determine levels of selected microelements (zinc, copper, iron, manganese, chromium and aluminium) in cord blood plasma, and to find out if the gestational age, gender and birth weight of a newborn affect these concentrations. The research was conducted on the cord blood of 71 newborns. Regarding the gesta- tional age, three groups were distinguished: I ? neonates born after 37 week of pregnancy ( n =7), II ? neonates born between 38 and 41 week ( n =59), and III ? neonates born after 42 week of pregnancy ( n =5). Subsequently, another division concerned the gender: male ( n =35) and female ( n =36) neonates, as well as their weight: neonates with regular birth weight ? 2.500-3.500 g ( n =61), and neonates with high birth weight ? over 3.500 g ( n =10). The concentrations of zinc, copper, iron, manganese, chromium, and aluminium in cord blood plasma were determined on the basis of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy method. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using Statistica 10.0 software, with the assumption that the level of significance was p <0.05. The average concentrations of analysed elements in umbilical cord blood were the following: 18.67±3.05 µmol Zn dm ?3 , 16.60±2.64 µmol Cu dm ?3 , 23.32±3.29 µmol Fe dm ?3 , 0.96±0.21 µmol Mn dm ?3 , 2.81±0.14 µmol Cr dm ?3 and 0.041±0.028 µmol Al dm ?3 , which is within the standard ranges, suggesting efficient regulating mechanisms of the developing foetuses. The research proved that the neonate?s gestational age, gender and birth weight had no substantial impact on concentrations of these elements in the cord blood, except the concentration of iron, which was statistically significantly correlated with the gender of neonates.

This case report presents the epidemiology, symptomathology, pathogenesis and treatment of a melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy. MNTI is a rare tumour that is seen usually at or around birth. It is usually localised in facial region. The tumour originated from medial part of alveolar process of maxilla. Presented case developed in maxilla of four months old girl. Excision of a tumour with a dental germ 61 was performed. Despite MNTI shows benign hystological character it has a high recurrence potential. Two months after first operation during routine follow up control, there was a tumour in oral cavity that was suspected to be relapse. Patient undergone second prodecure in general anesthesia. Tumour was excised with radical margins. Due to complex funcitional and aesthetic character of facial region patients need specialistic treatment and rehabilitation of masticatory organ. Frequent presence of dental germs in the mass of tumour often causes malocclusion.

Background: The use of simulation-based training is strategic in training medical staff. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and skills of performing neonatal CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) complicated by the presence of meconium in the respiratory tract in two groups of midwives (trained in the traditional tutorial-based model vs simulation-based training) with an interactive neonatal manikin. Material and methods: The knowledge and practical skills assessment was conducted in two groups of midwives. The knowledge of the participants was assessed using both a written test consisting of 25 control questions (5 questions on meconium aspiration syndrome, 20 on neonatal CPR) and practical skills including 12 activities (1-initial, 9-proper, 2-final). The complex “success” indicator was determined based on the effects of patient resuscitation (15 minutes of the scenario), and the reference point for knowledge and skills was to obtain a minimum of 70% correct answers/activities performed, evaluated by three independent experts. Results: In the knowledge test, the respondents scored 17.93 ± 3.11 points out of 25 (71.7%). Practical skills for all respondents were 17.57 ± 2.49 points out of 21 (83.66%), with a tendency to obtain higher points in cleaning of the airways and stimulation of the newborn, and lower for ventilation and the use of an alternative method of intubation. Despite the similar level of practical skills in both groups, only a higher statistical tendency was observed in three out of nine instrumented “proper activities” in the simulation trained midwives. Conclusions: The scenario used by us assessing the knowledge and skills of midwives taught in traditional tutorial-based and simulation-based training, indicates the advantage of acquiring individual competences in a short time using simulation-based training. This increasingly popular scientific model allows the acquisition of “invasive” competencies, but it requires further research.

Artykuł przedstawia problemy dotyczące oznakowania oraz pakowania amunicji stwierdzone na podstawie wieloletnich badań diagnostycznych. W pierwszej części omówiono skutki niezgodnego oznakowania oraz jego braku na wybranych przykładach. W drugiej części dotyczącej pakowania amunicji przedstawiono przykłady niewłaściwych sposobów pakowania i ich wpływ na stan techniczny amunicji. Zaproponowano możliwe rozwiązania występujących problemów.
The paper deals with questions of ammunition marking and packing observed for many years of diagnostic tests. In the first part some results of wrong marking or its lack are described by using relevant examples. The second part presents examples of improper packing and its impact into technical condition of ammunition. Possible solutions of existing problems are proposed.

Eco-composites based on natural raw materials such as polylactide and plant fibres (e.g. flax, hemp, jute) show many important features which enable them to be used as potential materials for biomedical engineering. Availability of the raw materials and low costs of production, capability to enhance mechanical parameters and also controlled time of degradation in the environment allow considering them as materials for rehabilitation equipment, orthopedic supplies or materials for medical packages. Such materials due to the presence of the natural fibres provide higher comfort during their utilization and then they undergo safe biodegradation which is non-harmful for the environment [1,2]. The work presents attempts on fabrication of composites based on polylactide (PLA, Ingeo 3051D, Nature works, USA) reinforced with short flax and jute fibres. The fibres were mechanically comminuted to the length of 1-2 mm. Preparation of PLA/fibres mixture took part in two stages. The first one consisted in drying of the polymer granulate and the fibrous filler at 60 degrees of Celsius for 2 h. The second stage the granulate/fibres mixture was homogenized using vertical screw injection moulding machine (Multiplas). The obtained mixture was mechanically comminuted with a laboratory grinder (Testchem). Volume fraction of the fibres was nit higher then 5 %. The granulates were used to prepare PLA/natural fibres composites in the form of paddle-shaped samples (according to PN-EN ISO 527) by the injection method. The injection took place at 165 degrees of Celsius and pressure of 80 kg/cm2. The samples were subjected to hydrolytic degradation tests (incubation in distilled water at 37 degrees of Celsius, 15 weeks) and biological degradation (composting in an eco-composter, TERMO-410 with the addition of Radvit activator which contains composting bacteria and selected fungi cultures which support biodegradation and accelerate degradation of organic wastes, 15 weeks). The effect of the degradation environment on the composite material was determined on the basis of changes of its mechanical properties (tensile strength, Young's modulus) using an universal testing machine (Zwick 1453). The degradation process was monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy of the composite samples (transmission method, BioRAD 60FT). Changes related to the polymer chain degradation were assessed on the basis of viscosimetric measurements (Hoppler method). The carried out investigations proved, that during both the composting and the incubation in water a gradual degradation of the material takes place. Its visual effect was decrease of the tensile strength of the composites for about 70% for PLA/5% jute and for c.a. 10% for PLA/5% hemp and their Young's modulus for about 25 % for PLA/5% jute and for c.a. 10% for PLA/5% hemp. The changes were caused by decrease of molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer matrix from 100 to 28 kDa for PLA/5% hemp, and from 136 to 48 kDa for PLA/5% jute. The change of the polymer structure was faster in the case of degradation in water environment. This effect was related to facilitated migration of medium (water) inside the material and possibility of washing out and transport of products of the polymer chain disintegration. Additionally, the present fibrous phase which is characterized by high water absorbability may became a reservoir of both the medium and the degradation products. Biodegradation in the compost heap was slower and it was an example of synergic effect of hydrolytic degradation and biodegradation caused by the microorganisms. This process could be observed on the FT-IR spectra recorded during degradation in the compost heap, where longer composting time led to increasing disproportion between bands indicating increasing fraction of hydroxyl, carboxyl and carbonyl groups in relation to groups characteristic for PLA chain. In the case of biodegradation the process progress is related to such variable factors as: amount and type of the bacteria and fungi cultures, humidity and temperature. In conclusion, it may be stated that the proposed PLA/natural fibres composite materials are an alternative solution for many fields of biomedical engineering especially for rehabilitation and orthopedic provision.

In vivo experiments were conducted on a 4-element group of the New Zealand rabbits. Osteogenesis was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS) after 12 weeks of implantation.

Iodine deficiencies in the human diet have created the need to search for new sources of food enriched with this element. The aim of biofortification of plants with iodine is to increase the iodine content in plants while ensuring that food products are safe for health. Seedlings enriched with iodine may be an alternative source of this element. Iodine is not an essential nutrient for plants, and its role and effects on plants are not fully known, particularly in the early stages of development. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of applying KI on the iodine biofortification of lettuce seedlings of the variety Michalina. The seedlings were grown on Petri dishes lined with filter paper. The doses of KI used for biofortification were 0 (control), 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5 μM dm-3. Iodine concentration was determined in the seedlings by ICP-MS, while K, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu were assayed by atomic absorption spectrometry. In respect of the biological quality of the iodine-enriched seedlings, we determined their length, biomass yield and chlorophyll content by spectrophotometry following extraction with acetone. A significant increase in the iodine content in seedlings was obtained after each dose of KI and we can claim that even the lowest dose, 0.5 μM dm-3 KI, is sufficient for biofortification. In comparison with the control, KI reduced the length of seedlings but did not affect their biomass or the chlorophyll content. Seedlings growing in the presence of 1, 2.5 and 5 μM dm-3 KI contained more potassium and less sodium and manganese than the control seedlings. The magnesium concentration was lower than in the control seedlings following the application of 2.5 or 5 μM dm-3 KI. No significant differences in the content of calcium, zinc, iron or copper were noted in the biofortified seedlings.

Aunique set of mammoth bones and tusk was found in active gravel pit in vicinities of Zastruże near Żarów, Lower Silesia. The use of archaeological methods made it possible to uncover 17 bones belonging to a single individual (Mammuthus primigenius). This is the first record of so complete set of mammoth bones in the Lower Silesian region. Mammoth remains were found to be accompanied by some bones of a horse and a flint artifact. The mammoth bones were dated radiocarbon method at 23 790 š 160 years, that is at the beginning of the last Pleniglacial of the Weichselian Glaciation. The mammoth remains were embedded in slope sediments of a small valley so they did not occurin anatomical order.

Iodine deficiency disorders are one of the serious worldwide public health problem in the world. The need to search for alternative methods of iodine supplementation results from the recommendation of the World Heath Organization and aims to significantly reduce iodine malnutrition in humans diet. Iodine is not included among essentials nutrients for plants, but the plants are able to accumulate it. Seedlings biofortified with iodine can become an alternative source of this element for humans. The aim of the study was to attempt to obtain iodine-fortified lettuce and radish seedlings and to determine the effect of the level of iodine applied in the form of potassium iodide on their biological quality. The following levels of KI were used: 0 (control), 0.075, 0.15, 0.0375, 0.75 and 1.5 mg per Petri dishes. The effect of potassium iodide on the selected parameters of their biological quality varied depending on the KI doses and species of plant. The seedlings grown in the presence of KI had a higher iodine content. The results showed that the most appropriate biofortification application rates were 0.075 and 0.15 mg because the enriched seedlings had biological quality parameters similar to the control. Statistically significant differences in the parameters characterizing seedling quality were noted most often in the case of the highest amounts of KI (0.375–1.5 mg). These KI concentrations reduced seedling’s lenght in radish and lettuce seedling but increased dry weight only in lettuce. A significant increase in ascorbic acid concentration only in the lettuce seedlings was obtained. In comparison with the control, no significant differences in the content of biomass and chlorophyll content were noted in the biofortified seedlings. Thiol group content was decreased in both radish and lettuce, but the antioxidant activity measured by DPPH method only in lettuce seedling extracts.
Zaburzenia spowodowane niedoborem jodu są ważnym problem zdrowotnym na świecie. Poszukiwanie alternatywnych metod suplementacji żywności w jod wynika z zaleceń Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia i ma na celu zmniejszenie niedoborów jodu w żywieniu człowieka. Jod nie jest zaliczany do podstawowych składników odżywczych dla roślin, ale rośliny mogą go akumulować. Siewki biofortikowane w jod mogą stać się dla ludzi źródła tego składnika. Celem przeprowadzonych badań była próba uzyskania siewek sałaty i rzodkiewki wzbogaconych w jod i ustalenie wpływu dawki jodu stosowanego w formie jodku potasu na ich jakość biologiczną. Zastosowano następujące dawki KI: 0; 0,075; 0,15; 0,75 i 1,5 mg na szalkę Petriego. Wpływ jodku potasu na oznaczane parametry jakości biologicznej zależał od dawki KI i gatunku testowanej rośliny. Siewki rosnące w obecności KI charakteryzowały się zwiększoną zawartością jodu. W warunkach doświadczenia najbardziej odpowiednie do biofortyfikacji dawki to 0,075 i 0,15 mg, przy których parametry jakości biologicznej siewek są zbliżone do kontroli. Stwierdzono, że statystycznie istotne różnice wartości parametrów charakteryzujące jakość biologiczną siewek obu gatunków występują najczęściej w przypadku najwyższych dawek KI (0.375–1.5 mg). Zastosowanie KI w tych dawkach spowodowało zmniejszenie długości siewek sałaty i rzodkiewki, ale tylko w przypadku siewek sałaty zwiększenie suchej masy. Tylko w siewkach sałaty stwierdzono znaczący wzrost zawartości kwasu askorbinowego. W porównaniu z kontrolą nie odnotowano znaczących różnic biomasy i zawartości chlorofilu w biofortyfikowanych siewkach. Stężenie grup tiolowych uległo zmniejszeniu zarówno w siewkach rzodkiewki, jak i sałaty, ale całkowita zdolność antyoksydacyjna mierzona metodą DPPH zmniejszyła się tylko w siewkach sałaty.
