Artykuł w pierwszej części pokazuje wielkie ambicje rodu Mniszchów (umocnione wyniesieniem Maryny Mniszech do godności carycy), widoczne w programach architektonicznych i wyposażeniu wnętrz kolejnych rezydencji rodu. Druga część poświęcona jest wątkowi wielmożności w biografii i publikacjach marszałka wielkiego koronnego Michała Mniszcha (XVIII wiek). W części trzeciej omówiono niektóre echa świetności tego polskiego rodu magnackiego w twórczości i korespondencji pisarzy francuskich, Balzaka i Prousta. Zakończenie dotyczy podobnych motywów w twórczości i korespondencji Rainera Marii Rilkego oraz Maryny Cwietajewej, która otrzymała takie imię na cześć owej pochodzącej z polskiego rodu carycy.
The first part of the article shows the great ambitions of the Mniszech family (strengthened by the elevation of Maryna Mniszech to the dignity of the Tsarina), visible in the architectural programs and interior furnishings of the subsequent family residences. The second part is devoted to the thread of greatness in the biography and publications of the Grand Marshal of the Crown, Michał Mniszech (18th century). The third part discusses some echoes of the greatness of this Polish magnate family in the work and correspondence of the French writers Balzac and Proust. The ending concerns similar themes in the works and correspondence of Rainer Maria Rilke and Marina Tsvetaeva, who received her first name in honor of the said tsarina from the Polish family.

On the basis of analysis of the text of Norwid's poem A Dorio ad Phrygium Jan Zieliński reconstructs Serionice, the place that is described in it; Serionice was a self-proclaimed state in the borderland of the Austrian and Russian partitions. Zieliński proposes the hypothesis that the Minkowce State was the prototype of Serionice; the Minkowce State was established by Ignacy Ścibor Marchocki called Redux. Next he gives a review of literary works and memoirs, Polish and French, written in Norwid's lifetime, where the figure of Marchocki – as one playing the main or only an episodic part – and his Minkowce appear (Sylwester Groza, Klementyna Hoffmanowa nee Tańska, Aleksander Jełowicki, Ludwik Mierosławski, Aleksander Przeździecki, Julian Słowacki). He points to a report signed by the name or pseudonym Bożydar Saszor, published in “Przegląd Europejski” (May 1863) edited by Józef Ignacy Krasicki, as the probable direct source of Norwid's inspiration for writing the poem. The article is concluded with a rhetoric question: “Why has the historical prototype of Serionice been unnoticed for 140 years?”

A personal review of the book version of Ewangelina Skalińska’s doctoral thesis devoted to Norwid and Dostoevsky. It discusses the threefold composition of the dissertation and underlines the dashing comparative analysis of Norwid’s Assunta and Dostoevsky’s A Gentle Creature. The open character of the research project is stressed. The reviewer discusses in detail another parallel, between two London texts: Norwid’s The Larva and Dostoevsky’s Winter Notes on Summer Impressions. In conclusion there is a passage on the inspiring role of Skalińska’s book, which fills an important gap and draws a horizon for the future comparative research.

In order to explain a mysterious sentence in an article by Jerzy Stempowski on Józef Wittlin’s novel (published in the present issue of “CL”) about a sermon on Jesus at a German machine gun, the author makes a survey of several sermons delivered and published in protestant Switzerland during the First World War (including one by the future famous theologian Karl Barth). Another possible source for this phrase by Stempowski is an article published in 1930 in “Berliner Tageblatt” during a lawsuit for blasphemy against the painter George Grosz, the author of a drawing representing Jesus on the Cross with a gas mask. The gloss ends with some remarks on the later use of the terms “Machine Gun Jesus” or “God’s Machine Gun” (Johannes Leppich, Billy Graham, Ryszard Kapuściński, Sam Childers).

Not only marionettes and mannequins: Kleist and Schulz The paper discusses several striking affi nities between some passages in the prose of Heinrich von Kleist and that of Bruno Schulz. The Austrian painter Oskar Kokoschka, designer of a life-size puppet and author of a text on his fetish, published in 1925, appears here as a go-between between Kleist’s marionettes and Schulz’ mannequins. All of the presented similarities by no means qualify as a case for plagiarism, nor even as imitations. Rather, they prove a soul affi nity, Schulz’s intensive reading of Kleist’s prose, and his accommodation of certain motifs and stylistic oddities, which are further developed in his prose, and, linked to other, not only literary, inspirations, yield a new and unique quality.

The first part of the paper discusses the meandric cooperation between Marcel Proust and the Paris based publisher Paul Ollendorff that lasted over 20 years (1893-1913). Further on, the Western expansion of the Ollendorff family from Rawicz, Poland, is briefly sketched. Another passage con- cerns a Maeterlinck pastiche by Proust (Echo, 1911), seen in the context of Ollendorff’s conversation method of learning languages. The author suggests Proust was using this method to learn English himself. The paper ends with a survey of several mentions of Ollendorff’s method in the twentieth century Polish prose.

The article is interested in following the history of the reception of the exceptional example of fifteenth-century poetry in Polish Pieśń o Wiklefie by Jędrzej Gałka of Dobczyn in the period between the discovery of the text in 1815 and the beginning of the First World War. The author discusses the reception of Pieśń o Wiklefie in later works of the Enlightenment poets as well as in texts by Mickiewicz and Norwid (the latter was friends with the poet Antoni Czajkowski, whose father first published Pieśń o Wiklefie). The article concludes with a discussion of the intellectual contacts between the logician Michał Dziewicki – one of the publishers of Wycliffe’s works – and Wittgenstein, who served in the military in Cracow.

The author compares two visions of Europe, seen from Switzerland: one by the English economist David Ricardo, who was here in 1822, the second one by Czesław Miłosz, visiting this country in 1953. Link between both is Ricardo’s future Polish translator, at the same time brother of Miłosz’s maternal grandfather. Miłosz’s essay is discussed in the frame of the idea of the „liberation of Eastern Europe”, launched by his editor, Jerzy Giedroyc, in the early fifties, and of Arthur Koestler’s call for an European Legion of Liberty. After comparison of the text of Sunday in Brunnen with the iconographic programme of the parochial church in Brunnen the author comes to the conclusion that Miłosz wrote a work of fiction rather than a documentary report on his visit in this small place in Switzerland. Brunnen can be seen as an exemplum.

Autor omawia trójdzielną kompozycję rozprawy, zwracając uwagę na brawurowość analizy porównawczej Assunty Norwida i Łagodnej Dostojewskiego. Wskazuje też na otwartość zaprezentowanego projektu badawczego. Na zasadzie pars pro toto omówiona została paralela dwóch tekstów „londyńskich” – Larwy Norwida i Zimowych notatek z lata Dostojewskiego. W zakończeniu mowa jest o inspirującej roli książki – wypełnia ona istotną lukę oraz wyznacza horyzont dalszych prac komparatystycznych.

Preliminaries The papter contains the analyis of Marcel Proust’s pastiche Sainte Beuve et Balzac, it juxtaposes the fragments from Balzac’s letters written by Proust with the original texts. The author discusses Fr. Janusz S. Pasierb’s poem spotkanie [meeting] from Zdejmowanie pieczęci [Removing the seal] volume (Warsaw, 1982). He treats the poem as an example of a double ekphrasis – a simultaneous reference to two works of art; one of them is Auguste Ottin’s large sculpture Polyphème surprenant Galatée dans les bras d’Acis (1866) composed into Marie de’ Medici’s fountain in Parisian Jardin du Luxembourg, the other Giovanni Lafranco’s painting Lucina e Norandino sorpresi dall’Orco (c. 1624) from the Borghese Gallery in Rome. The analysis, which evokes mythological, literary (Ariosto, Proust) and iconographical (Redon) contexts, leads to a conclusion about art’s mediating role; about art as ground that allows for enchantment over otherwise inaccessible forms of beauty.

The paper presents in a reversed chronological order the most important occurrences of the presence of Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s work in the biography and writings of one of the most important poets of the Young Poland movement, Tadeusz Miciński (1873–1918). During the First World War Norwid was for Miciński a prophet of the new vision of Poland. The most important Miciński’s essay on Norwid appeared on January 1, 1914, entitled “Źródło w górach” (A Spring In the Mountains). Earlier, Norwid played an important role in Miciński’s book “Do źródeł duszy polskiej” (To the Sources Of the Polish Soul), 1906, as well as in a cycle of literary events, co-organized by him in Zakopane in 1904. The first instances of Norwid’s influence on Miciński can be traced back as early as 1896.

Opis:
A free narrative about several watches – real ones and those described in literature – related with the wealthy Polish-Lithuanian Tyszkiewicz family in the 18th and 19th century. Lengthy digressions touch several aspects of life in that period. One concerns the person of Ludwik Skumin Tyszkiewicz (1748–1775), a talented orator who lived a dangerous life and died young in Paris (his ideas are compared with those of Michał Mniszech, who tried to establish a Jaquet-Droz manufacture of Swiss watches in Warsaw). Another one concerns Karol Wyrwicz, who inherited Tyszkiewicz’s watch, a priest who introduced the style of armorials to his parish books; his name is, incidentally, associated with a new Polish word for a corkscrew. The final part discusses the motive of watches in travel notes from Sweden written by Eustachy Tyszkiewicz. To be followed by Part Two.

The starting point is Interesting Men, a novel by Russian prose writer Nikolai Leskov, in which the motif of 18th-century English inventor Graham’s clocks plays an important role. The novel contains a quotation in Polish thas is attributed by Leskow to Zygmunt Krasiński, but in fact it comes from a poem by Szymon Konarski, a Polish conspirator, who was shot in 1839. By profession, Konarski was a watchmaker specializing in the so-called Graham’s escapements. The article puts forward a hypothesis that Leskov knew the biography of the victim and wanted to commemorate his fate in his novel, omitting the tsarist censorship

The article is an analysis of an illustrated note, handwritten in Rome in 1858 by a painter from Wilno, Bolesław Rusiecki,. The note described some objects (a silver watch, a wax seal and an Ottoman medal with a ribbon), owned by a Polish monk named Tyszka or Tyszko, who was supposedly close to Adam Mickiewicz during his final weeks at Constantinople in 1855. The watch is said to belong previously to general Józef Bem, who died at Aleppo in 1850. The most important of these objects seems to be the seal with an inscription (which links it to a military unit of Polish volunteers in Turkey in 1855), a Polish eagle and Mickiewicz’s coat of arms – most probably designed by the poet himself on his deathbed.

The article tries to explain the presence among Norwid’s acquaintances of two people who had the extremely rare first name Heliodor (Heliodor Jankowski, Heliodor Rochlitz). It is also connected with Antoni Kątski’s opera Marcella, whose libretto was translated into Polish by Norwid, with the complicated fortunes of the Rochlitz family and name, and with the Unions for Social Peace (Unions de la paix sociale).

Artykuł omawia nieznany dotąd pierwodruk listu papieża Piusa IX do Norwida, zamieszczony w lokalnym „Tygodniku Katolickim” (Grodzisk Wielkopolski pod Poznaniem) 21 czerwca 1861 r. Autor udowadnia, że zarówno przekład łacińskiego listu jak i tekst wprowadzający wyszły spod pióra Norwida. Następnie autor identyfikuje złożone przez Norwida papieżowi dary jako austriacki medal Madonny z Mariazell z roku 1683 (dzieło Paula Seela) oraz francuski medal z okazji zdobycia Sewastopola (1855, autorzy: Louis Desaide i Pierre Roquelay). W zakończeniu ten ostatni medal przeciwstawiony jest łacińskiej odzie Mickiewicza na zdobycie Bomarsundu jako znaki dwóch skrajnie odmiennych wizji historiozoficznych: Polska przeciw Imperium Osmańskiemu w obronie chrześcijaństwa (1683) i Francja w sojuszu z Imperium Osmańskim przeciw Rosji w wojnie krymskiej (1853-56).
The paper discusses a previously unknown first publication of the pope Pius IX’s letter to Norwid in a local weekly “Tygodnik Katolicki” in Grodzisk Wielkopolski near Poznań on June 21st, 1861. The author proves that both the Polish translation of this Latin letter and an introductory note were written by Norwid himself. The author also identifies Norwid’s two gifts to the pope as a 1683 Austrian medal of Our Lady of Mariazell (by Paul Seel) and a French medal commemorating the siege of Sebastopol (1855, work of Louis Desaide and Pierre Roquelay). In the final part of the paper the latter is opposed to a Latin ode, written by Mickiewicz on the occasion of the capture of Bomarsund, interpreted as signs of two contrary historiosophical visions: that of Poland versus the Ottoman Empire in the defense of Christianity in 1683 and that of France allied with the Ottoman Empire against Russia during the Crimean War (1853-56).

Hauptowskie ineditum z archiwum autora: rozdział z gotowej do druku w roku 1990, ale nigdy nie wydanej książki o polskiej literaturze emigracyjnej zatytułowanej Gałąź zachodnia. Próba pokazania odrębności pisarstwa Zygmunta Haupta poprzez takie cechy, jak malarskość i muzyczność, podwójność narracji, sugestia (złudna) autobiograficzności, ukryta erudycja, krajobraz historyczny, technika filmowa, łączenie tematyki kresowej z kulturą śródziemnomorską, odwołania do powieści młodzieżowych. Porównanie z twórczością Andrzeja Bobkowskiego prowadzi do sformułowania, ujętej już w tytule, podskórnej sprzeczności między tendencjami anarchistycznymi w dziele Haupta a właściwym mu jako artyście dążeniu do precyzji.
An unpublished essay about Haupt found in the critic’s archive: it is a chapter from a book titled Gałąź Zachodnia [The Western Branch] on Polish émigré literature, ready to print in 1990, but never published. The essay discusses the distinct features of Zygmunt Haupt’s prose, such as its artistic and musical qualities, complex narrative structure, (false) autobiographical tropes, hidden erudition, historical landscape, cinematic techniques, borderland and Mediterranean themes, and references to adventure novels. Haupt’s prose is also compared with the works of Andrzej Bobkowski, which allows the critic to discuss the contradiction, also emphasized in the title of the essay, between Haupt’s anarchist tendencies and his quest for perfection and precision in a work of art.

Próba wyodrębnienia w twórczości Norwida zespołu tekstów, rysunków i form mieszanych, podejmujących motyw satyrycznie ujętych polskich szlachciców, którzy mają w sobie coś z Chińczyków i charakteryzują się nonszalanckim stosunkiem do sztuki. Szukając źródeł tej chińsko-sarmackiej mieszanki autor konfrontuje dotychczasowe ustalenia norwidologów (Chlebowska, Dambek, Jeżewski) z szerszym kontekstem prasowym i ikonograficznym, dotyczącym kontaktów Norwida z kulturą chińską.
An attempt to extract from Cyprian Norwid’s work a group of texts, drawings and mixed forms that deal with a subject of caricatures of Polish noblemen, who have some Chinese traits and who treat arts nonchalantly. Looking for the sources of this Chinese-Sarmatian mixture, the author confronts previous interpretations (Chlebowska, Dambek, Jeżewski) with a broader press and iconographical context in order to throw some new light on Norwid’s contacts with the Chinese culture.
