    The article explains the concept of a spiritual experience in the context of a broadly understood experience. The author highlights the anthropological aspect of symbols and links them with human spiritual consciousness. The article concentrates on symbols occurring in the Bible and their use in symbolic acts performed by the prophets and by Jesus Christ. It shows the spiritual role of symbols in the Gospel of John and defines the role of symbols in spiritual experience realized in the context of prayer, liturgy and mysticism.
    Artykuł objaśnia pojęcie doświadczenia duchowego w szeroko rozumianym doświadczeniu. Naświetla symbol w aspekcie antropologicznym i w powiązaniu ze świadomością duchową. Ukazuje symbole w Biblii i ich zastosowanie w czynnościach symbolicznych pełnionych przez proroków i przez Jezusa Chrystusa. Ukazuje rolę duchową symboli w Ewangelii według św. Jana. Następnie określa rolę symboli w realizacji doświadczenia duchowego w kontekście modlitwy, liturgii i mistyki.

    Opis:
    This article addresses the problem of overcoming the discrepancy between faith and temporal engagement, signaled in the Gaudium et Spes of the Second Vatican Council and in many statements of John Paul II. It begins with the analysis of the Council’s text (no. 43), showing the historical-ecclesiastical, theological-spiritual and social causes of this discord. Then it points to certain elements of the Council's teaching, helpful in the theological and spiritual reflection on overcoming this split. In the second part, the article gives on this subject the theological and spiritual indications based on the conciliar theology of the laity according to Giuseppe Lazzati. In the final part, it supplements the earlier analyzes referring to the deepened ecclesiology, the broader concept of secularity, and to the science of building a synthesis between the faith and the temporal commitment included in the Christi fideles laici of John Paul II.
    Artykuł podejmuje problematykę przezwyciężenia rozdźwięku pomiędzy wiarą a zaangażowaniem doczesnym, sygnalizowaną w Gaudium et spes Soboru Watykańskiego II i w wielu wypowiedziach Jana Pawła II. Wychodzi od analizy tekstu soborowego (nr 43), ukazując historyczno-eklezjalne, teologiczno-duchowe oraz społeczne przyczyny owego rozdźwięku. Następnie wskazuje na pewne elementy nauki soborowej pomocne w teologicznej i duchowej refleksji nad przezwyciężeniem owego rozłamu. W drugiej części artykuł podaje na ten temat wskazania teologiczne i duchowe Giuseppe Lazzatiego oparte na soborowej teologii laikatu. W końcowej części uzupełnia wcześniejsze analizy, odwołując się do pogłębionej eklezjologii, poszerzonego pojęcia świeckości oraz do nauki na temat tworzenia syntezy między wiarą a zaangażowaniem doczesnym zawartych w Christifideles laici Jana Pawła II.

    Opis:
    The broken relation among culture and faith becomes “drama of our times” (Paul VI), thus, overcoming that broken relation has always been a challenge for the Church, catholic theology and spirituality. This article, first, signals the penetration of culture into Christianity and makes you more familiar with what ancients fought about culture. And next, gives two positive examples about shaping the culture through the faith; first, in the Karolin epoch (7th—9th century), using the example of Benedict monks’ contribution, second, in the golden era of French spirituality (17th century), using the examples of Saint Francis de Sales’ spiritual teachings and Saint Vincent de Paul’s educational and charity works. The further part of the article shows the progressing departure of culture from faith beginning with French Renaissance and through the era of Enlightenment until the complete cessation of common relation in philosophical currents of 19th century. The last part of the article shows the new relation of the Church to the world and culture initiated by the Second Vatican Council, which further was continued and developed through the teachings of the Popes Paul VI and John Paul II, and evangelism activity. Such relation is based upon a wide understanding of culture (what was worked out by secular science and expresses themselves (among other things) in inculturation of the faith, faith’s creative role of culture and intermediary role of faith in realization of evangelization.

    Artykuł jest analizą orędzia przekazanego Kościołowi za pośrednictwem św. Faustyny pod kątem zawartych w nim wezwań Bożych. Najpierw, na podstawie obrazu Jezusa Miłosiernego, jest odczytane wezwanie do ufności w dobroć i Miłosierdzie Boże, do skruchy, nawrócenia i do przyjęcia daru przebaczenia grzechów w sakramencie pokuty i pojednania. Następnie zostały objaśnione sakramenty św. w odniesieniu do tajemnicy Odkupienia. Z Mszy Świętej, jako Ofiary  uobecniającej w sposób bezkrwawy Ofiarę krzyża, wynika wezwanie do jednoczenia się jej uczestników z Jezusem ukrzyżowanym i zmartwychwstałym. W ostatniej części autor analizuje wezwanie do głoszenia światu orędzia o Miłosierdziu Bożym, do modlitwy przebłagalnej za grzechy i do pełnienia uczynków miłosierdzia.
    The article is an analysis of the proclamation delivered to the Church through St. Faustina in respect of God's calls contained in it. First, based on the picture of Jesus Merciful, it is inferred that there is a call to trust in God's Goodness and Mercy, to repent, to convert and accept the forgiveness of sins in the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. Afterwards, the Holy Sacraments are explained with reference to the mystery of the Redemption. The Holy Mass, as a sacrifice that makes present the Sacrifice of the Cross in an unbloody manner, gives rise to a call to its participants to unite with Jesus crucified and resurrected. In the last part, the author analyses the call to preach to the world the proclamation of Divine Mercy, to say a propitiatory prayer for sins and to fulfil the works of mercy.

    Artykuł Charakterystyka pragnienia apostolskiego św. Wincentego Pallottiego jest próbą ukazania Założyciela Zjednoczenia Apostolstwa Katolickiego jako męża nieskończonych apostolskich pragnień duchowych. Ujawniają się one z wielką mocą w jego tzw. Oświadczeniu generalnym sformułowanym w 21 roku życia, w którym nakreśla on swój całożyciowy program duchowy i apostolski: włączenie, o ile to możliwe wszystkich, w aktywne współdziałanie w apostolskiej misji Kościoła mającej na celu pomnożenie chwały Bożej i zbawienie ludzi. Owo Oświadczenie, które się może wydawać przesadne i niezrozumiałe, gdyż zostało wyrażone językiem matematycznej nieskończoności, będzie podtrzymane przez niego przez całe życie i ciągle ponawiane, najczęściej w formie trzech wyznań czy też pragnień: ”infinite infinita operari pro Deo Uno e Trino”; uwielbień Boga w Jego doskonałości nieskończonej (a więc we wszystkich Jego atrybutach, a zwłaszcza w miłości i miłosierdziu); uznania i wyznawania swej nędzy ontyczno-moralno-duchowej uzyskującej swą głębię, a nawet przepaść w „nicości”, kiedy to z miłosierdzia Bożego dokonuje się jego transformacja duchowa, zjednoczenie z Bogiem pojmowanym jako „Wszystko”, transformacja, której skutkiem jest odnowienie w nim żywego obrazu i podobieństwa Bożego i nowy, nadprzyrodzony sposób działania w mocy Ducha Świętego. Dopiero taki sposób działania stanowi spełnienie jego pragnień duchowych i uzdalnia go do najbardziej skutecznej współpracy w dziele zbawienia innych, w które Pallotti pragnie włączyć wszystkich i ożywić w nich tę samą dynamikę duchową i apostolską, w której odpowiedź na miłość Bożą, głęboka pokora, ufność w zasługi Jezusa Chrystusa, Apostoła Ojca Przedwiecznego i we wstawiennictwo Maryi, Aniołów i Świętych jest podstawą dla aktów zewnętrznych, czyli podejmowanych dzieł apostolskich.

    Starting from the difficulties in the reception of the Council’s teaching on the liturgy and its implementation, this article points to the need to discover the paschal mystery of Christ in the Eucharist. Because of the biblical and patristic-liturgical renewal and the re-emphasis on “mystery” in the twentieth century, the article introduces the concept of mystery in pagan cults and in the Church of the first centuries. The second part of the article, based John Paul II’s teaching on the Eucharist, shows the spiritual attitude towards the paschal mystery of Christ in the celebration of the Eucharist and considers the components of this attitude. At the same time, he takes into account signs and symbols and their functions in the interiorization of this mystery.

    Zachwiana relacja pomiędzy kulturą a wiarą stała się „dramatem naszych czasów” (Paweł VI), dlatego też jej przezwyciężenie jest wyzwaniem dla Kościoła współczesnego, teologii katolickiej i duchowości. Artykuł przybliża najpierw pojęcie kultury w starożytności i sygnalizuje jego przenikanie do chrześcijaństwa. Następnie podaje dwa pozytywne przykłady kształtowania kultury przez wiarę: jeden w epoce karolińskiej (VII-IX w.) na przykładzie wkładu mnichów benedyktyńskich; drugi w złotym wieku duchowości francuskiej (w. XVII), na przykładzie nauczania duchowego św. Franciszka Salezego oraz działalności edukacyjnej i charytatywnej św. Wincentego à Paolo. W dalszej części artykułu ukazano oddalanie się kultury od wiary począwszy od francuskiego Odrodzenia, przez Oświecenie, aż do zerwania tej relacji w nurtach filozoficznych XIX w. W ostatniej części artykuł ukazuje nową relację Kościoła do świata i kultury zapoczątkowaną przez Sobór Watykański II, kontynuowaną i rozwijaną przez nauczanie papieży Pawła VI i Jana Pawła II oraz działalność ewangelizacyjną Kościoła. Opiera się ona na szerokim rozumieniu kultury wypracowanym przez nauki świeckie i wyraża się m.in. w inkulturacji wiary, kulturotwórczej roli wiary oraz w pośredniczącej roli kultury w procesie ewangelizacji.

    Uniwersytet jako „jedyny w swoim rodzaju ośrodek twórczej pracy i promieniowania wiedzy, służący dobru ludzkości”, choć wyrasta z tradycji ukształtowanej przez Kościół, we współczesnych społeczeństwach zglobalizowanych znajduje się w kryzysie, gdyż został w dużej mierze uzależniony od myślenia utylitarystycznego i od czynników merkantylistycznych i przekształcony w model służący interesom społecznej i ekonomicznej ewolucji tych społeczeństw. Artykuł jest próbą całościowego określenia misji uniwersytetu katolickiego na podstawie Konstytucji Ex Corde Ecclesiae Jana Pawła II oraz jego przemówień do świata uniwersyteckiego i środowisk kultury. Misja ta polega na: 1) poszukiwaniu „całej prawdy o naturze, o człowieku i o Bogu” odwołując się do wiary i rozumu i ich zdolności czerpania prawdy z dwóch źródeł: objawienia i rzeczywistości stworzonej; 2) tworzeniu wspólnoty opartej na prawdzie, jednej wizji godności człowieka, wartościach chrześcijańskich oraz wychowaniu do dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej i ludzkiej; 3) przygotowaniu studentów do urzeczywistnienia przypadającego im w Kościele i w świecie powołania obejmującego zarówno udział w ewangelizacji kultur jak i budowanie kultury i cywilizacji godnej człowieka.
    The University as a “unique center of creative work and radiation of knowledge, serving the good of humanity,” although it grows out of the tradition shaped by the Church, in contemporary globalized societies it is in crisis because it was largely dependent on utilitarian thinking and mercantilist factors and transformed into a model serving the interests of the social and economic evolution of these societies. The article is an attempt to comprehensively define the mission of a Catholic university on the basis of the Ex Corde Ecclesiae Constitution of John Paul II and his speeches to the university world and cultural environments. This mission consists in: 1) searching for “the whole truth about nature, man and God” referring to faith and reason and their ability to derive truth from two sources: revelation and created reality; 2) creating a community based on truth, one vision of human dignity, Christian values and upbringing into Christian and human maturity; 3) preparing students to realize their vocation in the Church and in the world, including participation in the evangelization of cultures as well as building culture and civilization worthy of man.

    Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie darów hierarchicznych i charyzmatycznych od strony teologicznej, eklezjologicznej, teologiczno-duchowej i duszpasterskiej. Wychodzi od ponownego odkrycia charyzmatu podczas Soboru Watykańskiego II i śledzi pokrótce rozwój jego teologii po Soborze, nie tylko w nurcie życia konsekrowanego. Następnie przypomina jego usytuowanie w eklezjologii komunijnej. W zasadniczej części swego artykułu autor rozpatruje rolę charyzmatów w budowaniu wspólnoty Kościoła przez zakonników, kapłanów i świeckich. Uwzględnia ich związek z miłością – największym darem Ducha. Po wyjaśnieniu wzajemnej relacji pomiędzy communio i missio Kościoła, przechodzi do ukazania roli charyzmatów w urzeczywistnieniu misji ewangelizacyjnej przez duchownych, zakonników i świeckich. Ukazuje też ukierunkowanie charyzmatów na głębszy udział wiernych w sakramentach świętych.
    The article raises the issue of hierarchical and charismatic gifts in terms of their theological, ecclesiological, theological-spiritual and pastoral context. Its point of departure is the rediscovery of the charism during the Second Vatican Council and in subsequent parts it follows briefly the development of the charism after the Council, not only within consecrated life. Further on, the article recalls its position, including hierarchical gifts in the ecclesiology of communion. In the essential part of the article, the author considers the role of charisms in building up the community of the Church through monks, priests and laymen. He takes into account their relationship with love – the greatest gift of the Spirit - and with its communion function. After explaining the mutual relationship between communio and missio of the Church, he goes on to present the role of charisms in the attainment of the mission of evangelisation through the clergy, monks and laymen. He also presents orienting charisms towards a deeper participation of the faithful in the holy sacraments.

    Artykuł wskazuje na konieczność zachowania związku teologii i wiary z historią i pogłębiania go dzisiaj z tego względu, że pewne czynniki z przeszłości (racjonalizm, neoscholastyka) osłabiają go, a niektóre współczesne tendencje (postmodernizm, teologia abstrakcyjna, relatywizm religijny) podważają jego sens. Autor wychodzi od związku teologii i wiary z historią zbawienia w starożytności, wskazuje na osłabienie go w średniowieczu, zerwanie go w dobie Oświecenia i ponowne odkrycie jego ważności w początkach XX w. Analizując Konstytucję o Objawieniu Bożym Dei Verbum, przybliża zawartą w niej wykładnię wiary (fides quae i fides qua) jako odpowiedzi na objawienie Boga w historii. Uwzględniając następnie soborowe i posoborowe wyzwania teologiczne i duszpasterskie, akcentuje ważność zachowania wewnętrznego związku teologii i wiary z historią dla kształtowania tej drugiej poprzez aktywność ludzką odpowiadającą dobru wspólnemu i realizacji ostatecznego powołania chrześcijanina. Wskazuje na możliwość kształtowania dziejów w powiązaniu z tajemnicą zbawczego wcielenia i zawartą w owym kształtowaniu dialektyką, a następnie objaśnia sposób eschatologicznego spełnienia stworzenia i jego związek z zaangażowaniem w doczesności.
    This article points out the necessity of preservation of a relationship of faith and history and necessity of profounding such relationship as of today because some factors from the past (rationalism, neo-scholasticism) weaken it and some contemporary tendencies (postmodernism, abstract theology, religious relativism) undermine its meaning. The author comes from the relationship of theology and faith with the history of salvation in antiquity, indicates its weakening in the Middle Ages, breaking it up in the Age of Enlightenment and rediscovering its validity again in the early twentieth century. Analyzing the Constitution on God's Revelation (Dei Verbum) makes more familiar the exegesis of faith contained in it (fides quae and fides qua) as a response to the historical revelation of God in history.Taking into consideration the new post-conciliar theological and pastoral challenges, he emphasizes the importance of preserving an internal relationship of theology and faith with history for shaping the latter one through human activity corresponding to the common good and the realization of the final vocation. He points to the possibility of shaping history in connection with the mystery of the salvific embodiment and the dialectic contained in it, and then explains the eschatological way of fulfilling the creation and his relationship with involvement in worldliness.

    Opis:
    This paper presents an analysis of the spiritual message sent by the French bishops to the French faithful in the Letter to the French Catholics: Proposing Faith to Contemporary Society. The author analyses the text in the anthropocentric perspective, giving the reader an insight into the axiological crisis in the French society. This helps explain why this society finds it difficult to open itself to spiritual, Christian values. At the same time, those aspects of the religious functioning that are still present in the French society are pinpointed as the assets on which the Church evangelization action should rely. Also discussed is the French crisis of the Catholic faith, and the methods that the episcopal Letter (composed by Claude Dagens, Bishop of Angouleme) suggests for overcoming the crisis. The need for the mobilization of the priests, more active prayer and apostolic associations and for the collective action of all the faithful is also emphasised. The change is only possible if the whole Church returns to the roots of the faith (the mystery of the Trinitarian God, Baptism, the Gospel and the sacraments); accepts a morality based on the experience of the faith, and not on the doctrinal law; preaches about salvation through Christ in a close relationship to the values of contemporary people; seeks power in her liturgy and in the service for the neighbour (diacony). The Letter can be inspirational for Polish Catholicism at the beginning of the Year of Faith. The author claims that the following elements of the Letter are worth pondering upon in the Polish context: (1) taking into account human experience in the time of axiological crisis; (2) a more integrated preaching of the Gospel, liturgy and the service for the neighbour; and (3) increased participation of the lay Catholics in religious communities, in order to shape one’s Catholic identity and to get engaged in the apostolic mission of the Church.

    The present article attempts to show the moral and spiritual dimensions of the following of Jesus Christ and to emphasize their specific character and the relation that exists between them. It is based on the document issued by the Pontifical Biblical Commission entitled The Bible and Morality as well as on theological-moral and theological-spiritual literature. In order to justify “the Biblical roots of Christian conduct” to a modern man the analyzed document sets them on the idea of the gift of the Old and New Covenant as well as of other biblical ideas understood in the Christological and personalistic way. To do so it also stresses the importance of spiritual experience (of God, of Christ), owing to which it appreciates spirituality as prior to revealed morality. This spirituality is always assumed when the origin and the obligation to realize the revealed moral norms is meant. To what degree morality is inscribed in man's spiritual development is then explained by a theological-spiritual reflection on the Christian experience that should always take into consideration moral obligations (commandments, blessings). The article takes this into consideration, making short references to some ethical-spiritual models and to stages in the development of the spiritual life.
