Opis:
The article presents Heidegger’s concept of dwelling and Arendt’s figure of a stateless person in order to show a more profound existential dimension of the issue of the occupied territory. The juxtaposition of the above philosophical perspectives allowed for fully stressing the fact that the issues concerning refugees, migrants, repatriates are undoubtedly associated not only with legal or economic aspects, but primarily with how are we able to think about human existence in the context of the dwelling space.

Opis:
The article presents the discrepancies in the interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s practical philosophy. First of all, Marek J. Siemek’s interpretation emphasising the intersubjective character of Kant’s thought is presented. It has been confronted with other contemporary receptions of the Critiques’ author’s work, including, among others, the socio-political interpretation by Hannah Arendt. While in the end, he criticism made by Theodor Adorno has been outlined, which shows the irremovable contradictions underlying Kant’s thought.

Opis:
In the article I introduced selected concepts of fate expressed in the dramatic works by authors of different cultural backgrounds, at various stages of the development of civilisation. By analysing the selected literary works, I presented a multidimensional man’s attitude toward metaphysics, the consciousness of the aim of his life and death, based on the works of great artists who are both sensitive observers revealing the spirit of their own times and educators promoting their courageous outlook on the stage. The works of chosen artists showed that there is certain connection between the way of understanding the human fate and formation of the mentality model and the degree of moral and social activity of man, thus the condition of the entire community, and consequently the nation.

Opis:
The use of fluorescent markers has proven to be an attractive tool in biological imaging. However, its usefulness may be confined by the cytotoxicity of the fluorescent proteins. In this article, for the first time, we have examined an influence of the antibiotics present in culture medium on cytotoxicity of the EGFP and DsRed2 markers used for whole-cell labeling. Results showed that doxycycline negatively affected albumin synthesis in DsRed2-expressing hepatoma cells, and that both hepatoma cells and human skin fibroblasts, labeled with this protein, were characterized by the lowered growth rates. Thus, the cytotoxic effect of fluorescent markers depends on both protein used for cell labeling and on growth conditions that may cause cell stress.

Opis:
The primary hepatocytes culture is still one of the main challenges in toxicology studies in the drug discovery process, development of in vitro models to study liver function, and cell-based therapies. Isolated hepatocytes display a rapid decline in viability and liver-specific functions including albumin production, conversion of ammonia to urea, and activity of the drug metabolizing enzymes. A number of methods have been developed in order to maintain hepatocytes in their highly differentiated state in vitro. Optimization of culture conditions includes a variety of media formulations and supplements, growth surface coating with the components of extracellular matrix or with synthetic polymers, three-dimensional growth scaffolds and decellularized tissues, and coculture with other cell types required for the normal cell-cell interactions. Here we propose a new substratum for hepatic cells made by drying confluent human skin fibroblasts' culture. This growth surface coating, prepared using maximally simplified procedure, combines the advantages of the use of extracellular matrices and growth factors/cytokines secreted by the feeder layer cells. In comparison to the hepatoma cells grown on a regular tissue culture plastic, cells cultured on the dried fibroblasts were able to synthesize albumin in larger quantities and to form greater number of apical vacuoles. Unlike the coculture with the living feeder layer cells, the number of cells grown on the new substratum was not reduced after fourteen days of culture. This fact could make the dried fibroblasts coating an ideal candidate for the substrate for non-dividing human hepatocytes.

Opis:
Objective. The aim of the study was to review available data on HCV in Poland and Switzerland, in order to compare the two European countries with respect to epidemiological situation and efficiency of the response systems. Materials and method. A search of registries, published and grey literature was performed to assemble data on prevalence, rate of detection of new cases, identified risk factors for transmission, mortality due to HCV, prevalence of HCC and the consequent liver transplantations, as well as data on treatment in Poland and Switzerland. Results. Overall, the prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies was similar, not exceeding 1%. However, the major transmission routes of HCV infections were different: medical procedures in Poland and drug injections in Switzerland. By combining the available information it was also possible to demonstrate important differences in efficiency of the response systems. There was approximately 1 new diagnosis per 100 estimated undiagnosed cases in the population in Poland per year, compared to 6 in Switzerland, and the treatment rate per 100 estimated active infections was 2 and 4, respectively. Conclusions. Scaling up of the diagnosis and treatment is necessary in both countries; however, the means to achieve this might differ, taking into account the higher concentration of the infections in risk groups in Switzerland than in Poland.
