Opis:: Today's sustainable development policies contribute to tidying up of the land and restoring of the environmental order, as well as affecting, in a way, the change in perception of former industrial areas. The revitalization of degraded post-industrial areas is part of sustainable development and triggers the mechanism of bringing the restored areas back to the market in order to redevelop them by adding new functionalities. The goal (objective) of this article is to describe legal and organising basics of regeneration of degraded post-industrial areas encouraging economical regional development in Silesian Voivodeship.

Opis:: Before degraded areas can be promoted among would-be investors as potential sites for investment, a detailed record of such areas should be kept to show a general picture of this phenomenon in spatial, environmental and economic terms. Basically, one of the main obstacles to the re-development of these areas in Poland is a lack of knowledge about the quality of such land. The creation of a national base of areas previously invested in, comprising the data about their size, uses and environmental features, e.g. former industrial, railway, port or military ones, etc. should be regarded as the prerequisite for an efficient spatial policy.

Opis:: Over the last few years the local self-government of the Silesian Voivodship has undertaken a number of actions aimed at creation of systemic solutions to enable effective redevelopment of post-industrial areas so that they can start to perform new economic, public and natural functions. A failure to do so would definitely have negative impact on the local community and natural environment.
