    This article portrays a pair of artistically gifted women, Wanda Młodnicka née Monné (1850–1923) and her daughter Maryla Wolska (1873–1930), each with a diverse range of interests, including painting, music, and, first and foremost, literature. Their achieve-ment (both original works and translations) achievement has been largely forgotten. This article attempts to find out what inspired the two women, to identify those points of their artistic endeavor they had in common and those that determined their individual profiles, while paying special attention to the mother-daughter relationship.

    Opis:
    Two books for children about the Great War will be discussed: Bohaterski miś [Heroic teddy bear] by Bronisława Ostrowska and Five Children on the Western Front by Kate Saunders. It will be a comparative analysis. The books differ in terms of national perspective (Polish and English), but also in the time of edition – just after the war and a hundred years later. Thus, Ostrowska’s memory about the war is her own memory, whereas Saunders’ writing can be called a postmemory narrative. The aim of the paper is to answer the questions: what is similar and what is different in the two selected children’s novels about the Great War? What are the ways of transmitting memory? What do the writers want to save for new generations?

    In this article, Krystyna Zabawa analyses Barbara Gawryluk’s novel for older children Czarna, Klifka i tajemnice z dna morza [Czarna, Klifka and the secrets from the seabed] from the perspective of the commentaries this novel makes on language issues and on aspects of interpersonal as well as interspecies communication. Zabawa identifies the ways in which the novel presents foreign languages (Swedish and English) and how it encourages young readers to learn them. Zabawa interprets Gawryluk’s novel a text about communication problems and about the conditions necessary for mutual understanding among people. She also analyses passages in the novel that address human-animal and animal-animal communication.

    The aim of the article is to present Zofia Kossak’s scout reportages that were written in the 1930s and newly published after 63 years in 2020 and to analyse them in terms of shaping and thematising time.     The paper includes the analyses of three books of poems by Paweł Beręsewicz: Lalki Dorotki [Dorotka’s dolls] (2004), Czy pisarzom burczy w brzuchu? [Do writers’ stomachs grumble?] (2009) oraz Złota jedenastka… [The golden eleven…] (2018). The author studies language, composition, the voice and characters creation, as well as the main idea of the three books, also paying attention to illustrations. She reconstructs the status of a speaker and a recipient, and their relationship (i.e. an adult–child relationship). It is also an attempt to place Beręsewicz’s books of poems in the context of his stories and novels.

    W artykule zostały przedstawione propozycje lekturowe dla dzieci, przede wszystkim uczniów szkoły podstawowej. Autorka wychodzi z założenia, że powinny to być książki o dużych wartościach artystycznych, zarówno literackich, jak i plastycznych, atrakcyjne ze względu na swoją formę, treść, język. Te kryteria spełnia literatura współczesna, której charakterystyka została szkicowo zaprezentowana w artykule. Kolejno opisane zostały książki obrazkowe, komiksy, tomiki poetyckie. Autorka przedstawiła także kryteria wyboru dobrych książek dla dzieci oraz źródła, do jakich mogą sięgnąć nauczyciel, bibliotekarz czy rodzic w poszukiwaniu wiarygodnych informacji o najnowszej literaturze dziecięcej.
    The article presents examples of books for obligatory reading, especially for children in a primary school. The author makes an assumption that such books should be of significant artistic value, both of literary text and illustrations, and attractive in form, subject and language. These criteria are fulfilled by contemporary literature which is characterized shortly in the article. Picture books, comic-books, books with poetry are described consequently. The author advises also how to choose good books for children, what criteria to follow. She presents sources of information for teachers, librarians, parents, where they can find trustworthy reviews on latest children’s literature.

    The paper presents the results of the analysis of about a hundred Polish books for younger children (3–10 year-olds) written in the 21st century. During the research special attention was paid to the depiction of children’s play in the analysed literature. The author compared the character of play in Polish children’s classics (M. Konopnicka, M. Kownacka, Cz. Janczarski) with recent stories and novels (written by G. Kasdepke, R. Jędrzejewska-Wróbel, R. Witek, A. Tyszka and others). Some sociological research is referenced in order to assess whether writers present actual situations of play (diagnostic) or try to influence play by giving advice on how to play and what to play (prescriptive). The main conclusions of the research are: in contemporary literature for young readers, children’s play is not presented as often as it was in the previous century; children characters need adults’ help, advice or company to play, they rarely play outside with their friends without adult supervision. Instead, children’s play now often takes place in cyberspace and kids become addicted to their computers and other electronic devices; children are often bored and expect help in finding interesting and involving forms of play.

    The author analyzes and interprets literary texts for young children devoted to children’s rights. She especially focuses on the most representative book in this area, that is Mam prawo! czyli nieomal wszystko, co powinniście wiedzieć o prawach dziecka, a nie macie kogo zapytać! [I Have the Right! or Almost Everything You Should Know About Children’s Rights but You Have Nobody to Ask!] by Grzegorz Kasdepke. The article answers the following questions: What do children get to know about the existence and realization of children’s rights in the contemporary world from literature written for them? What has changed (if anything) in the way of writing about children’s rights from Korczak’s times till now? What is the way of presenting rights by narrators in children’s books? What is the role of the visual image (so important in contemporary culture) in the analyzed book? What is the implicit message regarding children’s rights in the latest children’s literature?

    Klasyka literacka jest ponadczasowa z definicji, ale paradoksalnie również przechodzi przemiany w czasie dzięki niezliczonym adaptacjom. Jednym z interesujących zjawisk kultury XXI w. jest popularność powieści graficznych opartych na tekstach klasyki. Przykłady można mnożyć. W kręgu literatury anglojęzycznej swoich adaptacji doczekały się m.in. powieści Jane Austen, Josepha Conrada, Charlesa Dickensa, C.S. Lewisa, Virginii Woolf. Moje analizy w tym artykule skupiają się na klasycznej powieści Anne of Green Gables (1908) kanadyjskiej pisarki L.M. Montgomery i opartej na niej powieści graficznej pod tym samym tytułem, stworzonej przez M. Marsden i B. Thummler (2017). W tym studium przedstawione zostały sposoby, w jaki klasyka literacka sprzed wieku jest przekształcana we współczesną powieść graficzną oraz główne kierunki zmian. Podstawowe problemy badawcze brzmią: W jaki sposób kształtowany jest czas akcji w oryginale oraz w powieści graficznej? W jaki sposób zmienia się (jeśli się zmienia) kreacja miejsca akcji, bohaterowie, fabuła? Celem artykułu jest analiza tych wszystkich przekształceń, ustalenie rządzących nimi zasad oraz ich wpływu na wymowę utworu.
    The literary classics is timeless by definition but paradoxically it changes in time in its countless adaptations into different media. One of the interesting phenomena of the 21st century is the popularity of graphic novels which are based on the classic. Examples can be multiplied. If the English classic is taken into account, several adaptations of the novels by Jane Austen, Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens, C.S. Lewis, Virginia Woolf may be mentioned among the others. My research is focused on one of the classical novels by the Canadian writer L.M. Montgomery Anne of Green Gables (1908) and the graphic novel (with the same title) based on it (with the same title) by M. Marsden and B. Thummler (2017). This is a case study presenting the transformation of the classic novels into graphic ones and taking into consideration especially times when the novels were written and what has been changed in their graphic adaptations of the 21st century. The main research questions are: how the times are represented both in the original novel and its contemporary transformation? How the setting, characters and plot are transformed (if they are)? The aim of the paper is to analyse all these transformations, define their main features and to find out their influence on the original message of the novel.
