Opis:
Syntactic foams are closed cell structured foam materials and present improved properties for lightweight and high performance material requests. They have been widely used in naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering applications on account of their good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, dielectric properties. In this study, a novel high strain rate sensitive syntactic foam was developed. A rigid polyurethane resin was used as a binder material. Glass bubbles were used as an additive for producing cell structure. Elastomeric silicone rubber resin were used to change elastic properties of the foam as an additional binder material. Quasistatic compression properties and high strain rate compression properties were obtained by using Instron Universal Tensile-Compression Machine and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experimental setup respectively. The results show that developed foams are low dense and very high strain rate sensitive materials. Consequently, developed foam can be used for the blast, impact or ballistic mitigation purpose as a coating material.

Opis:
Light-weighting is a new scope in the automotive industry to accommodate new emission regulations. The parts produced with conventional metallic materials are replaced with parts produced by using light weight or high strength materials, to obtain light weighted equivalents of the same strength. Foam core sandwich structures, high strength steels, composite materials are the most used alternative materials. Syntactic foams that show outstanding performance in case of high-speed collisions have an excellent utility as energy absorbers in vehicle crash boxes. Syntactic foams are modeled in crash boxes at various filling rates and filling patterns in the context of this study. As results of the FEM analyses, it is observed that syntactic foams have excellent crash performance, as well as weight-reducing effect in vehicle crash boxes.

Opis:
In this study, oxide coatings were produced on pure zirconium by micro arc oxidation method in the electrolytes containing sodium silicate and different amounts of yttrium acetate tetrahydrate (1-4 g/l) for the same coating duration of 1 h. The surface roughness, microstructure, phase content and chemical composition of the coatings were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry and X-Ray diffractometry. It was found that the surfaces of coatings on zirconium consist of monoclinic-ZrO₂, tetragonal-ZrO₂ phases. The coating thickness decreases with addition of yttrium acetate tetrahydrate while it does not change significantly with the increase of its amount. The clustered equiaxed features were formed on the surfaces of the coatings. As the amount of yttrium acetate tetrahydrate in the electrolyte solution increased, the coating/substrate interface smoothened. Two main regions of the coating, the outer dense region (I) and the porous inner region (II), became significant with addition of YAT into the electrolyte.

Syntactic foams are one of the most widely used close cell structured foams. They are used in applications for naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering due to good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, and dielectric properties. These foams are fabricated by incorporation of hollow particles in a matrix material. The most preferred matrix materials are polymers. In this study silicone resin (useful temperature range - 53C to 232°C) was selected as a binder material. Glass bubbles were incorporated into the silicone resin at three different mass percentages (10%, 20%, and 30%). The density of the silicone was reduced more than 50% by 30% glass bubble contribution. The foam mechanical properties were investigated in a room temperature and after heat treatment at 500C by quasi-static compression experiments. Microstructural transitions by the temperature raises were examined by using scanning electron microscopy pictures. It was observed that the increase of glass bubble percentage in silicone rubber enhanced the energy absorption properties in the heat treated and room temperature specimens. Plateau stress and densification amount were improved under quasi-static compression load by the glass bubble percentage increase. It can be said that developed syntactic foams can be used in heat resistant, low weight and high compression strength exigencies.

Opis:
Zirconium (Zr) is a potential implant material due to its excellent biocompatibility and low elastic modulus for biomedical applications. Its poor bioactivity, however, limits its use as biomaterials. In this study, microarc oxidation which is a plasma-electrochemical based process was applied to produce oxide coatings on pure zirconium. The coating processes were conducted in different electrolytes containing sodium silicate and varying amounts of calcium acetate tetrahydrate (CA) for 30 min to investigate the effect of the introduction of CA into the electrolyte solution on the morphology and chemical composition of the fabricated coatings. It was found that the coatings consisted of monoclinic-ZrO₂ and tetragonal-ZrO₂ phases. The amount of the tetragonal-ZrO₂ phase increased with the increasing CA concentration in the electrolyte. The coating thickness and surface roughness showed a tendency to increase with the increasing CA concentration in the electrolyte. It was observed that the vicinity of plasma channels were Zr-rich, while their surroundings were rich in Si and Ca elements. The outer region of the coating was denser compared to inner region consisting of Zr-rich porous structure.

In this study, the headlamp of a light commercial vehicle was optimized in the way of pedestrian safety. This work aims to prevent harms to pedestrians in the urban crashes. Finite element analysis models of current headlamp and impactors representing pedestrian body forms were created. Static, modal and dynamic/explicit analyses were carried out by using existing and optimized headlamp models. Both models were in the simulations under the same boundary conditions. The results of two conditions were compared with each other. The results showed that connection regions of the headlamp have a major effect on pedestrian safety in pedestrian-vehicle collisions.

Opis:
High carbonate content in soil negatively affect plant growth, because the availability of nutrients is restricted due to high pH. The present investigations were carried out to reveal possible alleviating effects of the exogenous root inoculation PGPRs on development and physiology of soilless-grown grapevines cultivated under alkaline stress in controlled glass house. pH of growth medium was increased from 7.5 to the values ranging from 7.9 (control) to 8.1 (A18) according to the bacterial inoculations by NaHCO3 supplementations. Bacteria inoculations did not result in statistically significant differences in pH values of growth media. The bacterial population density found in the rhizosphere of grapevines ranged from 6 × 108 CFU mL−1 (M-3) to 9 × 108 CFU mL−1 (Ca-637). The highest value of shoot thickness was obtained from Ca-637 (5.3 mm), followed by A18 (5.2 mm), while M3 did not significantly affected the shoot thickness. The greatest pruning residue per vine was obtained from A18 treatment (81.5 g), followed by Ca-637 (80.8 g) while the lowest value was determined in control. Vine yield was the greatest with A18 (1128 g) treatment and was followed by Ca 637 (1059 g). Considering the general observations, root inoculation of PGPRs A18 and Ca-637 may be recommended in enhancing bioremediation of alkali growth media.

The objectives of this study have been to determine the impact of the distance from acombustor of a cement plant (downwind direction) and duration of exposure to pollution on the bioaccumulation of metals by four lichen species. Nickel, cadmium, chromium, cop- per and lead accumulated in lichen thalli, with the highest accumulation occurring at 50 m of the cement plant and upon prolonged exposure. In contrast, the concentrations of Al were not consistently affected by the distance from the plant or the duration of exposure. Pseudevernia furfuracea was most effective as an indicator of cement dust pollution. We concluded that transplantation of Pseudevernia furfuracea on trees or shrubs can be an easy and cost-effective means of Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb pollution monitoring.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of flunixin meglumine (FM) and meloxicam (M) on postoperative and oxidative stress in ovariohysterectomized bitches. Twenty four bitches were divided into three groups (n=8 in each) and treated during premedication as follows: FM (2.2 mg/kg, iv, Fluvil, Vilsan, Turkey), M (0.2 mg/kg, sc, Maxicam, Sanovel, Turkey) or 0.9% saline (1 ml, iv, IE, Turkey) - control (C) group. The concentrations of serum cortisol, nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant potential (AOP) and glutation (GSH) were measured in blood samples collected during incision (0 h), closure of incision line (0.5 h) and 1, 2.5, 12 and 24 hours after incision. It was observed that cortisol level was higher at 0.5, 1 and 2.5 h in group C (p < 0.05), 0.5 h in group FM (p < 0.001), and 1 and 2.5 h in group M (p < 0.01), as compared to that determine at 0 h. Group C showed higher cortisol level during 0.5 h (p < 0.05) than that found in the other groups. Group FM displayed lower levels during 1 h (p < 0.01) and 2.5 h (p < 0.05) as compared to those observed in other groups. Concentrations of MDA, AOP and GSH between all the groups did not show any significant differences. MDA level was higher at 0.5 and 1 h in groupM (p < 0.05) than that found in group C and it was the lowest at 2.5 h in group C (p < 0.05). AOP was higher at 2.5 h in group FM and M (p < 0.05) than that observed in group C, and at 12 and 24 h in group M than that found in group C and FM. GSH did not show any significant differences between the groups. NO level in group FM after 12 h was higher (p < 0.05) than that at 0.5, 1 and 24 h. Moreover, NO level was lower at 0.5 (p < 0.01), 1 (p < 0.05) and 24 h (p < 0.05) in group FM than that observed in group C and M. In conclusion, flunixin meglumine decreases cortisol and NO levels more efficiently than meloxicam. Therefore, it is suggested that postoperative stress following ovariohysterectomy may be prevented by flunixin meglumine in bitches.

Opis:
Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the removal of heavy metal ions (Ni, Pb, Zn) from aqueous solutions by natural adsorbents (zeolite, bentonite, clay) were investigated in a lab-scale batch study. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, temperature, and agitation time were studied to optimise the conditions. Under those optimized conditions (180 rpm agitation rate, 120 min agitation time, pH 4.0, 298 K, 100 mg/dm3 initial adsorbate concentration), the removal percentages of heavy metal ions for natural adsorbents have been determined. The adsorption mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the process were analyzed by two and three parameter isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Toth and Sips), and kinetic models (Lagergren's pseudo-first order, Ho and McKay's pseudo-second order). Adsorption thermodynamics of heavy metal ions (changes of standard enthalpy, entropy and free energy) on zeolite, bentonite and clay were also studied at 298,318 and 338 K.
