Micro arc oxidation (MAO) of aluminum alloy samples was studied using bipolar pulses with various pulse durations under constant duty cycle. The processing times were chosen as 20, 30 and 40 minutes. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness measurement (R_a) and indentation tests were employed to investigate the phase distribution, microstructure, surface properties and hardness of the coatings, respectively. By increasing the pulse duration and processing time, coatings with different surface roughness, thickness and hardness were fabricated.

The Kadıncık shrub (Flueggea anatolica) is one of the endemic forest shrub species in Turkey. In this study, the morphological and physiological characteristics of F. anatolica seeds from three provenances (Tarsus, Kozan, Andırın) were investigated. The average 1000-seed weight was 4.9 g. There were significant differences between seeds from the different provenances in terms of their morphological characteristics, with the seeds from the Kozan provenance having the smallest seeds in terms of weight, thickness, and width. The seeds germinated at similarly high rates (90 ± 2%) at 16°C, 20°C, 24°C, and 28°C. However, the germinations occurred earlier at 24°C and 28°C, with 24°C appearing to be the most appropriate germination temperature. The results indicated that F. anatolica seeds have physiological dormancy, requiring approximately 10 weeks of prechilling for dormancy removal and germination. A 4-week warm-incubation period at 24°C prior to the prechilling treatment had only a slight effect on the prechilling duration time required to remove dormancy. Seeds stored in the refrigerator (+4°C) with a 2.7% or 4.0% moisture content conserved their high initial germination rates after one year of storage. The average germination rate of the prechilled seeds redried to an 8% moisture content and stored for one year at 4°C dropped from 92.7% to 63.6%. Basing on the results of this study, the suggested moisture content and storage temperature for storing F. anatolica seeds are 3–8% and 4°C or less, respectively.

In this study, both the morphological maturation and germination ability of the Oriental beechnut were investigated two months prior to seed dispersal to find out the appropriate period of ripened beechnut collection. Beechnuts were collected in the seed stand, Dokurcun-Adapazari, on August 21, September 9, and September 25 on trees, and on October 16, 2003, from the ground after the major seed fall. Germination percentages were 18.0%, 80.5%, 92.0%, and 94.7% on August 21, September 9, September 25, and October 16, respectively. Similarly, both beechnut weight and the embryo:beechnut weight ratio significantly increased with time and reached an approximate maximum level at September 25, 2–3 weeks prior to seed dispersal. This outcome indicates that ripened beechnuts can be collected from the trees, 15–20 days prior to major seed dispersal. The study also indicates that ripened Oriental beechnuts have physiological dormancy and need about 8–10 weeks chilling at 3°C for germination.

The present study was carried out to determine the effect of temperature on the seed germination of Fraxinus ornus subsp. cilicica, an endemic taxa on Taurus Mountains in Southern Turkey. Seeds from the three provenances were collected and prechilled for 16 weeks before the germination tests. Germination tests were conducted at constant temperatures (5, 15, 20, 25°C) and at alternating temperatures (5~15, 5~20, 5~25, 15~25°C). Temperature treatments were effective on germination percentage and mean germination time. The highest and the lowest germinability were obtained at the 5–15°C (73.3%) alternating and 25°C (9.8%) constant temperatures, respectively. Mean germination time greatly differed at various temperature regimes. Germination accelerated with increased constant temperatures while it was relatively similar speed at alternating temperatures used in the tests. Seed sources had also an effect on the final germination percentage.

Background: Nurses’ professional self and job satisfaction directly affect their professional practices. For this reason, it is important to find out about their perceptions of their professional self, the factors that affect and are affected by the professional self, and nurses’ job satisfaction. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nurses working in psychiatry clinics. Material and Methods: The universe of this descriptive and correlational study was the psychiatric nurses in Turkey and its sample comprised of 103 nurses employed in the psychiatry clinics and polyclinics of university hospitals randomly selected from provinces representing the seven geographical regions in Turkey. The data collection tools used in the study were Information Form, Professional Self Concept Scale and Nursing Job Satisfaction Scale in Nurses. Results: Psychiatric nurses have a high professional self-concept and moderate job satisfaction. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between the professional self-concept and job satisfaction of nurses. Conclusion: Professional self-concepts and job satisfaction of psychiatric nurses are affected by demographic characteristics and these two variables are related to each other.

Mountain almond (Amygdalus arabica) is a shrub with naturally distributing in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. A. arabica also known as bitter almond and can reach up to 2.5 m. The natural distribution of mountain almond is generally in the Southeast Region of Turkey. The present study carried out to determine the morphological and physiological characteristics of the seed of mountain almond. The seeds were collected from three different populations of A. arabica in Adıyaman. For different each populations seed weight, height, width, thickness, and 1000-seed weight were measured in the laboratory. Morphological characteristics of A. arabica seeds varied according to their populations. Seed germination tests were conducted at 20 °C, after prechilling for 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks at 4 °C. Prechilling treatments of 3 weeks were insufficient, but 6 and 9 weeks of prechilling were found to eliminate seed dormancy and led to the highest germination percentage. The average germination percentage after 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks of prechilling were 3.1%, 49.6%, 80.4%, and 81.1%, respectively. The average mean germination time was approximately between 8 and 10 days.

Opis:
AISI 52100 bearing steels are commonly used in applications requiring high hardness and abrasion resistance. The bearing steels are working under dynamic loads in service conditions and their toughness properties become important. In order to provide the desired mechanical properties, various heat treatments (austenizing, quenching and tempering) are usually applied. In this study, AISI 52100 bearing steel samples were austenized at 900°C for ½ h and water quenched to room temperature. Then tempering was carried out at 795°C, 400°C and 200°C for ½ h. In order to investigate the effect of heat treatment conditions on wear behavior, dry friction tests were performed according to ASTM G99-05 Standard with a ‘ball-on-disk’ type tribometer. The samples were tested against steel and ceramic counterparts using the parameters of 100 m distance and 30 N load and 0.063 m/s rotational speed. After wear test, the surface characterization was carried out using microscopy. Wear loss values were calculated using a novel optical method on both flat and counterpart specimens.

Introduction: Dialysis patient had experienced the fear of pain and suffering, loneliness and fear of death. The high mortality rate in these patients indicates that about one-fourth of them are in their last year of life, suggesting the presence of death and dying in the haemodialysis unit. Nephrology nurses play an important role in these patients and their families in dealing with the fear of death and accepting the reality of death. Purpose: To determine the opinions of nephrology nurses about death concept.Materials and methods: This was a descriptive study conducted among nurses. A total of 68 nurses working on the hemodialysis units of public hospitals in Turkey completed the questionnaire. The tool used in the study was the Scale of Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety, the Scale of Death Related Depression and the Scale of Attitude Towards Death and Dying Patient. The results were analyzed statistically and p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Nephrology nurses had a medium-level avoidant attitude towards dying patient and their emotional state was depressive. They experienced medium-level death anxiety, the death related anxiety and depression and avoidant attitude towards the patient were found more in female nurses compared to male nurses. The nurses who worked for 1-10 years have less DRDS scores than nurses who worked for 20 years or above. İn addition nurses had an avoidant attitude towards dying patients as their DRDS and TPDAS scores increased. Conclusions: It can be suggested that nephrology nurses should be given training on how to take care of dying patients, and the continuity of this in-service training should be ensured.

Al-Ti intermetallic compounds were coated by electro-spark deposition. Commercially pure titanium (Cp-Ti) (grade 2) and aluminum rods were used as substrate and electrode materials, respectively. During the electro-spark deposition experiments the following pulse parameters in a group were used: pulse current amplitude, pulse duration and pause between the pulses of a pulse group with 100-300-500 A, 50-100 μs, and 100 μs, respectively. Al-Ti coatings having a thickness range of 15-30 μm were formed on the surface of titanium substrate using electro-spark deposition process. The coating properties such as the roughness and the thickness increased with increasing pulse duration and pulse current amplitude. The mass transfer coefficient decreased with increasing pulse current amplitude and pulse duration. The quality of the adhesion characters of the coatings, determined by Rockwell-C adhesion test, becomes worse from HF-2 to HF-4, due to increase of pulse current amplitude. Depending on the electro-spark deposition process parameters, the coating formed as AlTi or as layered structure consisting of AlTi+$AlTi_3$ when pulse current amplitude increases. The Al-Ti coatings include some micro cracks lying throughout the coating from surface to interface which is nature of this process. The maximum cross-sectional hardness of the coatings were in the range of 800-1150 HV.

In the present study, first Ti6Al4V alloy was deposited on steel (AISI 1060) surfaces by using ESD method. The optimum electrical parameters for the coating process were investigated to obtain high quality coatings. Then, in order to gain bio-compatibility and obtain second layer, which was coated with hydroxyapatite (HAp), MAO technique was applied on the present coating. Resulting duplex layers were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis together with surface roughness, coating thickness, scratch tests and hardness tests.

In this study, micro alloy steel (St 35) surfaces, which were coated with different hard alloy electrode materials via Electro Spark Deposition (ESD) method, have been characterized. The electrode materials were chosen among hard alloys such as; TiCN(Ni), CrC-NiCr, WC(Co) and TiWC(Co). During the ESD experiments, the following pulse parameters in a group were used: pulse current amplitude, pulse duration, electrical charge of 100-200 A, 100 μs, 1000 mC respectively. The surface roughness, thickness of coatings, cross sectional microstructure analysis, phase analysis, micro hardness and adhesion properties of the coated samples were characterized by profilometer, SEM (EDX), XRD, micro hardness tester and scratch adhesion tester respectively.

The static criterion that the amplitude of the principal peak of the liquid structure factor has a constant value along the freezing line and the onset of freezing are studied from the structure factors and the static dielectric functions of halide salts interacting via the effective pair potentials through the hypernetted-chain approximation. It is observed that the criterion above is restricted to the effective charge difference. The critical value of plasma parameter at freezing is affected by the mobility and number concentration of anions and cations. The distribution of the value of the static dielectric function closest to the wave number axis in the negative region is also determined by the charge difference and the ordering of ions and related to the onset of freezing.

In this study, siderophore-producing bacterial species have been isolated from soils contaminated with diesel oil. In P. aeruginosa (P-7) production of siderophores was inhibited at concentrations of ZnSO₄ and CoCl₂ of 2000 μM, while B. subtilis (BS-1) has increased siderophores production at similar concentrations of CoCl₂ and ZnSO₄. The same bacteria have increased the production of siderophores in presence of streptomycine (512 mg/ml). In B. subtilis the production of siderophores was inhibited by cefuroxime. The results show the effect of metals on the efficiency of siderophore production by bacteria for potential application in bioremediation of metal-contaminated iron-deficient soils in the microbial assisted phytoremediation processes. The results include the effect of metals on siderophore production efficiency of the bacteria used for the bioremediation of metal-contaminated soils. In conclusion, it has been found that heavy metals and antibiotics significantly effect the production of siderophores by bacteria.

In this study, we report on the optimization and characterization of chloroform soluble calix[4]arene derivative as a humidity sensor based on electrical properties. Due to the fact that calix[4]arene molecules are nonconductive, we modified the calix[4]arene molecules with carbon nanotubes with electrostatic bond in order to increase the conductance of calix[4]arene molecule (5,11,17,23-tetra-ter-butyl-25,27-dehydrazinamidcarbonilmetoxy-26,28-dehydroxy-kalix[4]aren). Using photolithography technique, we fabricated interdigitated gold electrodes with 3 micrometers separation to investigate the electrical properties of carbon nanotubes modified calix[4]arene molecule where we used dropcast method to form a thin film of carbon nanotubes modified calix[4]arene molecule on the gold electrodes. Our reproducible experimental results indicated that the chloroform soluble carbon nanotubes modified calix[4]arene films have great potential for humidity sensing applications at room temperature operations.

This study focuses on the characterization and optimization of calixarene modified carbon nanotube thin films for gas detection. Calixarene molecules were synthesized individually by considering their functional groups to attract the gas. Calixarene modified carbon nanotube based sensors were fabricated using drop-casting method on a quartz crystal microbalance gold electrode. Carbon monoxide, carbondioxide, oxygen and dry air were used as active gases for adsorption process, while high-purity nitrogen gas was used for desorption process. The selectivity and sensitivity of calixarene modified carbon nanotube are investigated in detail. Our experimental results show that functional calixarene modified carbon nanotube coated quartz crystal microbalance sensors are very sensitive and selective to gas of $CO_2$ at room temperature operation.
