Opis:: In the Soviet Union during World War II, the Polish army was formed twice. The first occasion occurred after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moscow and the Polish London (London was the constitutional headquarters of the Polish government during wartime) in 1941 under General Anders. The second occasion occurred in 1943 after breaking the mutual relations – as the result of Soviet action (Lt. Col. Berling - the deserter from Anders’ army promoted by Stalin to the rank of genera). In both, the role of military chaplain was formed. In Ander’s formation, chaplains were subordinated to the Polish supreme authority – field bishop, Fr. Gen. Joseph Gawlina, who approved of the organization and pastoral activities and even visited Anders’ army in Russia. It was different with the pastoral care in the Berling’s army, where chaplains had to certify Polish identity in the formation co-created by the Soviets. This essay shows the differences in the organization and pastoral activities of the military chaplains of both formations.

Opis:: At the time of the agreement with the German Third Reich on Soviet aggression on Poland on September 17, 1939, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Moscow was given a diplomatic note declaring that in the face of the "break-up of the Polish state" the USSR "is defending the Belarusian and Ukrainian population" in eastern Poland. This deceptive version was "bought" by the Allies of Poland in the West who pretended that Moscow was not a co-hostile against allied Poland. They explained that they didn’t want to deepen but to overthrow the German-Soviet alliance. The highest authorities of the Republic of Poland were charged that they were not consistent and did not declare a state of war between Poland and the USSR from September 17, 1939. This was a game of slander and the author documented the will of the parties to bring such charges. In the period of the Polish People's Republic, the myth of the so-justified Soviet intervention in 1939 was promulgated. Also, today, this issue for many politicians, historians and journalists remains not entirely clear. This text is an analysis of the formation of the basis of this myth, showing its political ground for various propaganda and proclamation of Western states, and ambiguous attitudes of Polish politicians, especially focused on the very naive and politically dependent General Sikorski, the chief of war and prime minister, with greater responsibility - than the ruling party of the Second Polish Republic - for establishing false opinions about Polish-Soviet relations in September 1939.

Opis:: Pisanie o ludzkiej religijności nie jest sprawą prostą, ponieważ wkracza się wtedy w kwestie indywidualnej relacji z Bogiem. Nie można przeniknąć ludzkiej duszy, a jej tajemnicę człowiek zabiera ze sobą do grobu. Znane są jedynie namacalne fakty, sprawy ducha powinny być pozostawione Opatrzności i Jej miłosierdziu. Nie inaczej jest z Józefem Piłsudskim, pochowanym w krypcie Katedry na Wawelu. Piłsudski odwoływał się do Boskiego Miłosierdzia w rozkazie do wojska po dramatycznych wydarzeniach z maja 1926 roku. Marszałek Józef Piłsudski wychował się w katolickiej rodzinie i to wpłynęło na jego życiową postawę. Był silnie związany ze swoją matką i darzył ją olbrzymim szacunkiem. Jego wolą było, aby jego serce zostało pochowane w grobie matki na wileńskim cmentarzu na Rossie. Na marmurowej płycie można przeczytać: Matka i Serce Syna. Zasadniczo przynależność Piłsudskiego do Kościoła katolickiego nie była kwestionowana, przynajmniej do lat siedemdziesiątych, kiedy ujawniono kilka nieznanych dokumentów, wskazujących na przynależność Józefa Piłsudskiego do wspólnoty ewangelickiej. Dzisiaj wiadomo więcej na temat tego „nawrócenia”. 24 maja 1899 roku w Łomży w obecności proboszcza Mikulskiego 31-letni Piłsudski zmienił wyznanie na ewangelicko-luterańskie. Zrobił to, by 15 lipca 1899 roku poślubić Marię Kazimierę Koplewską-Juszkiewicz. Nie mogło jednak dojść do ślubu w obrządku katolickim, ponieważ Maria była rozwódką. Piłsudski wrócił na łono kościoła katolickiego po śmierci pierwszej żony. Imponujący pogrzeb Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego był nie tylko pogrzebem męża stanu, bojownika o niepodległość i zwycięskiego wodza podczas Bitwy Warszawskiej, ale także członka Kościoła katolickiego, z ufnością powierzającego siebie Bożemu Miłosierdziu.
Presentation of religious silhouette of man is not a simple matter, because we touch the sphere of the unique relationship of man to God. It is impossible to penetrate to the end the mystery of the soul. Also Józef Piłsudski took his mystery to the tomb in the crypt of Wawel Cathedral. We can only remain in the realm of the known facts, and the whole essence of the problem, leaving Providence and Her mercy. He appealed to the mercy of God himself in one of the most poignant Polish army orders issued before the dramatic battles of May 1926. Marshal Piłsudski came from a Catholic family, which formed the grounds of his philosophy of life. He carried with him the cult of motherhood and a deep respect for his mother. It was his will, that his heart would be buried in the grave of his mother at the Vilnius Rossa cemetery. On the marble slab one can read: Mother and her son’s heart. Piłsudski affiliation to the Catholic Church was not generally questioned and it was only in the seventies that dispute flared up following the disclosure of some unknown documents – published evidence of belonging of Józef Piłsudski to the Evangelical community. Today we know the circumstances in which this “conversion” occurred. May 24, 1899 in Łomża in the face of pastor Mikulski; 31-year-old Piłsudski made a profession of Evangelical-Lutheran faith. The reason for this was a marriage that soon (15 July 1899) was concluded with Maria Kazimiera from Koplewski Juszkiewicz. Because Maria was divorced, they could not marry in the Catholic Church. Piłsudski returned to the bosom of the Catholic Church by making profession of faith after the death of his first wife. Impressive funeral of Marshal Piłsudski was not only a funeral of great fighter for country independence, the victorious commander-in-chief of Warsaw Battle and a famous statesman, but also the funeral of a member of the Catholic Church, confidently entrusting himself to God’s merciful majesty.

Opis:: Szkic prezentuje postawy hierarchów Kościoła katolickiego w zaborze rosyjskim, pruskim i austriackim na początku wielkiej wojny 1914-1918 i zmiany, jakie nastąpiły pod wpływem okoliczności zewnętrznych oraz przemian świadomościowych w trakcie konfliktu światowego wobec kwestii państwowości polskiej. Zdecydowana większość biskupów opowiedziała się za perspektywą wspierania odradzającego się państwa polskiego i aktywnie w tym procesie uczestniczyła, dając temu wyraz zarówno w sferze życia publicznego, obywatelskiego, jak i kościelnego. Rok 1920, uwieńczony polskimi sukcesami militarnymi, był finałem wojny polsko-bolszewickiej, rozpoczętej w 1919 r., w której ujawniło się na wielu płaszczyznach zaangażowanie zarówno hierarchów katolickich, jak i wspólnot, którym przewodzili. Wiele wskazuje na to, że w żadnym wcześniejszym okresie Kościół nie wykazał się większym zaangażowaniem, jak miało to miejsce w 1920 r.
This short study presents attitudes of the hierarchs of the Catholic Church in the areas of Russian, Prussian and Austrian Partitions at the beginning of the Great War of 1914-1918 and the changes that occurred under the influence of external circumstances and changes in public awareness during the world conflict in relation to the issue of Polish statehood. The vast majority of bishops were in favor of supporting the reborn Polish state and actively participated in this process, expressing this in the public, civic and church life. The year 1920, crowned with Polish military successes, was the finale of the Polish-Bolshevik War, started in 1919, in which the involvement of both Catholic hierarchs and the communities they led was seen on many levels. There are many indications that never before had the Church shown a greater commitment than in 1920.
