Opis:
Badania wykazały, że zanieczyszczenie powietrza substancjami złowonnymi (m.in. siarkowodór) w miejscu wprowadzania wody z hypolimnionu do rzeki ulegało silnym wahaniom, jednak stężenie zapachowe zawsze wynosiło powyżej 200 ouE/m3.
Results of analysis of air quality around the receiver of hypolimnetic discharge demonstrate that such corrective measures take place at the expense of air pollution. Lake Kortowskie (Olsztyn, Poland) restoration is being carried out by selective hypolimnetic water withdrawal through a pipeline to Kortowka river, the receiver of the lake water. This is the reason why olfactometric studies were undertaken to evaluate the impact of lake restoration on the odor nuisance related to the use of this method. The analyses demonstrated that the odorant (e.g. hydrogen sulfide) concentration (immission) in the air just at the river outlet was subject to strong fluctuations. However, it always exceeded 200 ouE/m3. The highest concentration recorded at this site reached almost 40,000 ouE/m3. As the distance from the pipeline outlet increased, the immission usually decreased, until no odor could be detected. However, the odor was still detectable for about 500 m along the course of the river. Further studies are being carried out in order to determine the 'odor hours' and produce an odor map for the site.

Opis:
Introduction: Type III Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndrome (PAS III) is composed of autoimmune thyroid diseases associated with endocrinopathy other than adrenal insufficiency. This syndrome is associated with organ-specific and organ-nonspecific or systemic autoimmune diseases. The frequency of PAS syndromes in diabetic children is unknown. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of PAS III in children with diabetes mellitus type 1. Patients and methods: The study consisted of 461 patients with diabetes mellitus type 1(T1DM), who were 1-19 years of age. TSH, free thyroxin, TPO autoantibodies, and thyroglobulin autoantibodies were determined annually. Autoimmune Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was diagnosed in children with positive tests for TPO Ab and Tg Ab and thyroid parenchymal hypogenicity in the ultrasound investigation. Elevated TSI antibodies were used to diagnose Graves’ disease. Additionally, Anti-Endomysial Antibodies IgA class were determined every year as screening for celiac disease. During clinical control, other autoimmune diseases were diagnosed. Adrenal function was examined by the diurnal rhythm of cortisol. Results: PAS III was diagnosed in 14.5% children: PAS IIIA (T1DM and autoimmune thyroiditis) was recognized in 11.1 % and PAS III C (T1DM and other autoimmune disorders: celiac disease, and JIA, psoriasis and vitiligo) in 3.5% children. PAS IIIA was more prevalent in girls than in boys – 78.4% versus 21.6% (p<0.05). PAS III was observed between 1-5 years of life in 66.6% children; the frequency decreased in consecutive years and successively increased in the adolescence period to 22.7%. Conclusions: PAS III occurs in 14.5% of children with DM type1 and the incidence is positively correlated with patients’ age and female gender. Children with PAS III should be carefully monitored as a group at risk for the development of other autoimmune diseases.

Opis:
Biscutella laevigata L. is known as a Tl hyperaccumulator. In Poland Biscutella laevigata occurs in the Tatra Mts (Western Carpathians) and on the calamine waste heap in Bolesław near Olkusz (Silesian Upland). The purpose of this work was to evaluate whether plants of both populations were able to accumulate an elevated amount of thallium in their tissues. The plants were cultivated in calamine soil in a glasshouse for a season and studied at different ages – from 2-week-old seedlings to 10-month-old adults. Additionally, the plants were grown for ten weeks in calamine soil with EDTA to enhance Tl bioavailability. The total content of Tl in plant tissues after digestion was determined by ICP-MS, whereas its distribution in leaves was studied by LA-ICP-MS. Of the total content of Tl in the soil in the range of (15.2–66.7) mg·kgˉ¹d.m., only (1.1–2.1) mg·kgˉ¹d.m. was present in a bioavailable form. The mean content in all the plants grown on the soil without EDTA was 98.5 mg·kgˉ¹d.m. The largest content was found in leaves – 164.9 mg·kgˉ¹d.m. (max. 588.2 mg·kgˉ¹d.m.). In the case of plants grown on the soil enriched with EDTA, the mean content in plants increased to 108.9 mg·kgˉ¹d.m., max. in leaves – 138.4 mg·kgˉ¹d.m. (max. 1100 mg·kgˉ¹d.m.). The translocation factor was 6.1 in the soil and 2.2 in the soil with EDTA; the bioconcentration factor amounted to 10.9 and 5.8, respectively. The plants from both populations did not contain a Tl amount clearly indicating hyperaccumulation (100–500 mg·kgˉ¹d.m.), however, high (>1) translocation and bioconcentration factors suggest such an ability. It is a characteristic species-wide trait; B. laevigata L. is a facultative Tl hyperaccumulator. The largest Tl amount was located at the leaf base, the smallest at its top. Thallium also occurred in trichomes, which was presented for the first time; in this way plants detoxify Tl in the above-ground parts. Leaves were much more hairy in the Bolesław plants. This is an adaptation for growth in the extreme conditions of the zinc-lead waste heap with elevated Tl quantity.

Opis:
This article is focused on the aspects related to the occurrence and the behavior of REE in hydrosphere. Particular attention is given to the natural waters of Europe including Poland. The data shown in this work are based on the studies and discussions published elsewhere, as well as on own investigations of REE concentrations in the natural waters of Poland (ground- and surface waters). The aim of this article is to present information on REE in different types of waters (ocean, ground- and surface waters). Potential sources of REE in the selected waters and factors affecting their concentrations and distribution patterns (signatures) are discussed. The input of REE originating from human activity is indicated and some examples of anthropogenic factors are presented. Additionally, some general information on natural REE abundances in various environmental compartments and their applications in the industry are provided. The potential influence of some major components on determination of europium content in water samples during measurements by mass spectrometry is also explained.

Opis:
Over the last two decades nanotechnology has become one of the most dynamically evolving field of research. The unique properties of nanomaterials, not disclosing at microscale, are examined and exploited to extend our understanding of the interactions taking place at atomic or molecular level. Those findings affect research in many areas, like e.g. alternative energy sources, electronics, physics and medicine. In this paper, the possibility of using nanomaterials for the enhancement of photodynamic activity, is discussed. A brief review on drug-delivery facilitating nanomaterials, regarding their characteristic features, is presented. An exemplary application of silver-doped nanomaterials for enhancement of photodynamic properties of two photosensitizers: Photolon and Protoporphyrin IX, is described. Influence of silver-doped nanomaterials addition on the fluorescence intensity of photosensitizers immobilized in silica-titania (SiO2-TiO2) sol was examined via VIS spectroscopy. Influence of sonication on the fluorescence enhancement was also investigated. It was demonstrated that the fluorescence enhancement of photosensitizers depends on the concentration of both: photosensitizer and silver-doped nanoparticles.

The isotope effects of gallium (69/71Ga) and indium (113/115In) have been determined in the system: strong cation exchanger (Dowex 50-X8)/HCl. The sings of gallium and indium effects were opposite, i.e., the heavier isotope of gallium was fractionated into the resin phase, while the heavy isotope of indium was fractionated into the liquid phase. The values of unit separation gains were found to be +3.0 ´ 10-5 for gallium and –2.0 ´ 10-4 for indium. A possible explanation of the effects is proposed.

Opis:
The sol-gel derived silica spheres with surfaces modified by silver nanoparticles were used to enhance the photodynamic effect. The silica nanoparticles were prepared by modified Stöber synthesis. The diameter of obtained silica spheres was ca. 100 nm. These silica spheres we used as a carrier for noble nanoparticles. It was shown that Ag-Au nanoparticles have an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. This effect depends on the nanoparticles concentration and it is stronger for higher concentrations. Laser irradiation enhances this effect, and starting from certain concentration it is possible to kill Escherichia coli, totally, when using laser light.
