The research task of the essay is to answer the question of what is the face of the nation in the ethnic enclaves situated at the peripheries of national states. The subject of the analyses is the local population of the village Jaworzynka. In 1922, the settlement Herczawa was founded as a local unit independent from Jaworzynka. Since then Herczawa began to belong to Czechoslovakia. The state-owned status of Jaworzynka, which started to be a part of the Republic of Poland, was recognized after the World War I. The author takes into account the longue durre of folk and national culture generated in the Silesian Beskidy in the second half of the 18th century. The national culture is the main term applied to the investigations of the borderland regions. According to the ethno-symbolic approaches (Anthony D. Smith) and culturalism methods in sociology (Antonina Kłoskowska), the author analyses in his research: 1) language, 2) religion, 3) folkways and mores 4) arts, 5) local knowledge and literature. These elements delineate the sphere of symbolic culture. Based on the common folk culture, two national cultures have been formed nowadays – the Polish and Czech ones. Both Polish and Czech Census Bureau data and objective elements of national culture discussed in the essay indicate the process of national revival. The local people of Jaworzynka identify themselves as Poles and the population of Herczawa define themselves as Czechs. The content and the form of the local culture are visible in Jaworzyna, but they seem to be latent or diminishing in Herczawa.

Przedmiotem analizy jest tekst spisany przez s. Faustynę Kowalską zatytułowany Dzienniczek, który ma cechy dziennika intymnego nieprofesjonalisty. Posługuję się koncepcją teoretyczną Alfreda Schütza, by przedstawić mikroświaty działającej jednostki. Moja teza brzmi następująco: Dzienniczek można traktować z perspektywy socjologii fenomenologicznej jako zapis świata działania zakonnicy, która doświadcza odkrycia powołania, komunikując się w obrębie różnych mikroświatów. Podstawowym obszarem jest dla niej mikroświat religijny. Zgodnie z projektem ontologii społecznej poszukuję prawd ogólnych, dotyczących form bytu społecznego. Siostra Faustyna została kanonizowana w 2000 r. Dzienniczek uznaje się obecnie za najczęściej tłumaczone na języki obce dzieło spisane po polsku.
The subject of the analysis is the text written by Sister Faustyna Kowalska entitled Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, which has the characteristics of an intimate journal of a non-‑professionalist. I am using the theoretical concept of Alfred Schütz to present the sub-worlds of an acting individual. My thesis sounds as follows: The Diary can be treated from the perspective of phenomenological sociology as a record of the world of the nun’s action, which experiences the discovery of a vocation, communicating within various sub-universes. The basic area for her is the religious sub-world. According to the project of social ontology, I am looking for general truths regarding forms of social existence. Sister Faustyna was canonized in 2000. The Diary is now considered to be the most frequently translated work written in Polish.

The paper discusses some metaphors of night, evening, darkness, twilight and their related phenomena. They have all been selected from the short stories written by Bruno Schulz. The analysis of the metaphors allows us to notice a certain character of Schulz's metaphorization, consisting in associating darkness with negative phenomena. Darkness and night are shown by Schulz in a metaphorical manner as personified elements capable of creating reality. That reality is not friendly to man, hostile, possessive, and has a destructive influence on man and his surrounding. An important role in the metaphorical presentation of night is played by metaphors in whose lexical composition there appear names bringing to mind semantic associations. These metaphors are usually valued as negative, both in emotional and aesthetic sense. Such names are, above all, names of diseases and their symptoms, names causing negative tactile sensations and stimulating imagination to create scenes with a negative influence on our psyche.

Authors of the article attempt to answer the question on what was happening in the Chorzów village before held on 21st March 1920 the Upper Silesia plebiscite that according to ending the World War I the Versailles Treaty was to decide about this region’s affiliation to Germany or Poland. Voting was conducted in the Province of Upper Silesia as well as in a small part of the Province of Lower Silesia (Namysłów County). Jacek Nowak and Piotr Wróblewski describe everyday and ceremonial life of the village’s inhabitants, analyzing visual data – photographs, postcards and occasional prints. Furthermore, they also re-study historic works by Tomasz Klenczar, Rev. Jan Macha and Ludwik Musioł. Authors conclude that life in the Chorzów village (that is now a district of the city of Chorzów called Stary Chorzów [the Old Chorzów]) has been still going on according to the traditional Silesian cultural patterns.
Autorzy artykułu podejmują próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie: co działo się we wsi Chorzów przed plebiscytem z 21 marca 1920 roku, który zgodnie z traktatem wersalskim kończącym I wojnę światową miał zadecydować o przynależności tej części Górnego Śląska do państwa niemieckiego lub polskiego. Głosowanie przeprowadzono w przeważającej części terenów prowincji górnośląskiej i małej części prowincji dolnośląskiej (gmina Namysłów). Jacek Nowak i Piotr Wróblewski opisują życie codzienne i odświętne mieszkańców wsi, analizując wizualne dane jakościowe: fotografie, karty pocztowe oraz druki okolicznościowe. Poza tym poddają wtórnej analizie prace historyczne poświęcone Chorzowowi autorstwa Tomasza Klenczara, ks. Jana Machy i Ludwika Musioła. Autorzy dochodzą do wniosku, że życie we wsi Chorzów (obecnie dzielnicy miasta Chorzów nazwanej Chorzów Stary) toczyło się i toczy nadal zgodnie z tradycyjnymi śląskimi wzorami kulturowymi.

In this paper, the authors present a novel construction of an automatic balancing device applicable to balancing shafts working in a heavily polluted environment. The novelty of the presented system lies in the fact that its utilization requires no changes to be made in the already existing shafts. Also, the system is capable of working during the operation of the balanced shaft, so there is no need to stop it. The propulsion system is based on eddy current braking, therefore no wires need to be used in the device. During the development process of the system, three iterations of the device were created. Each iteration is presented, described, and discussed. The advantages and drawbacks of each version are pointed out and explained thoroughly. The correctness of the design was verified by the created devices that were assembled and fixed on shafts to prove the design assumptions.
