Opis:
The article focuses on a theme of re-emerging infectious diseases (R-EIDs) in film productions and television series. Our aim was to show interaction between the epidemics, public reactions and contents of popular culture. The analysis depicts how popular culture tends to present fears of epidemics, as well as describes two other threads important to R-EIDs-related narrative: fear of possible collapse of modernity and fear of technological progress.

Opis:
Presently power control and management play a vigorous role in information technology and power management. Instead of non-renewable power manufacturing, renewable power manufacturing is preferred by every organization for controlling resource consumption, price reduction and efficient power management. Smart grid efficiently satisfies these requirements with the integration of machine learning algorithms. Machine learning algorithms are used in a smart grid for power requirement prediction, power distribution, failure identification etc. The proposed Random Forest-based smart grid system classifies the power grid into different zones like high and low power utilization. The power zones are divided into number of sub-zones and map to random forest branches. The sub-zone and branch mapping process used to identify the quantity of power utilized and the non-utilized in a zone. The non-utilized power quantity and location of power availabilities are identified and distributed the required quantity of power to the requester in a minimal response time and price. The priority power scheduling algorithm collect request from consumer and send the request to producer based on priority. The producer analysed the requester existing power utilization quantity and availability of power for scheduling the power distribution to the requester based on priority. The proposed Random Forest based sustainability and price optimization technique in smart grid experimental results are compared to existing machine learning techniques like SVM, KNN and NB. The proposed random forest-based identification technique identifies the exact location of the power availability, which takes minimal processing time and quick responses to the requestor. Additionally, the smart meter based smart grid technique identifies the faults in short time duration than the conventional energy management technique is also proven in the experimental results.

The aim of the study was to analyze indications and results of the first one thousand liver transplantations at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw.Material and methods. Data from 1000 transplantations (944 patients) performed at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery between 1994 and 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. These included 943 first transplantations and 55 retransplantations and 2 re-retransplantations. Frequency of particular indications for first transplantation and retransplantations was established. Perioperative mortality was defined as death within 30 days after the transplantation. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate 5-year patient and graft survival.Results. The most common indications for first transplantation included: liver failure caused by hepatitis C infection (27.8%) and hepatitis B infection (18%) and alcoholic liver disease (17.7%). Early (< 6 months) and late (> 6 months) retransplantations were dominated by hepatic artery thrombosis (54.3%) and recurrence of the underlying disease (45%). Perioperative mortality rate was 8.9% for first transplantations and 34.5% for retransplantations. Five-year patient and graft survival rate was 74.3% and 71%, respectively, after first transplantations and 54.7% and 52.9%, respectively, after retransplantations.Conclusions. Development of liver transplantation program provided more than 1000 transplantations and excellent long-term results. Liver failure caused by hepatitis C and B infections remains the most common cause of liver transplantation and structure of other indications is consistent with European data.

Liver transplantation is a well-established treatment of patients with end-stage liver disease and selected liver tumors. Remarkable progress has been made over the last years concerning nearly all of its aspects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the evolution of long-term outcomes after liver transplantations performed in the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery (Medical University of Warsaw). Material and methods. Data of 1500 liver transplantations performed between 1989 and 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Transplantations were divided into 3 groups: group 1 including first 500 operations, group 2 including subsequent 500, and group 3 comprising the most recent 500. Five year overall and graft survival were set as outcome measures. Results. Increased number of transplantations performed at the site was associated with increased age of the recipients (p<0.001) and donors (p<0.001), increased rate of male recipients (p<0.001), and increased rate of piggyback operations (p<0.001), and decreased MELD (p<0.001), as well as decreased blood (p=0.006) and plasma (p<0.001) transfusions. Overall survival was 71.6% at 5 years in group 1, 74.5% at 5 years in group 2, and 85% at 2.9 years in group 3 (p=0.008). Improvement of overall survival was particularly observed for primary transplantations (p=0.004). Increased graft survival rates did not reach the level of significance (p=0.136). Conclusions. Long-term outcomes after liver transplantations performed in the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery are comparable to those achieved in the largest transplant centers worldwide and are continuously improving despite increasing recipient age and wider utilization of organs procured from older donors.

The text discusses the theory of Marc Augé’s non-places. In this article the author focuses on the relation between non-places and identity, and answers the question of to what extent it is possible to transform non-places to places – one of the Augé’s theses is that there are close relations between these two categories. According to the author, this change can be made thanks to the external media. The websites such as Facebook and YouTube, allow a symbolic transformation of a status of non-places, their rearrangement. In the study the author also proposes to expand Augé’s dictionary to include a category of analgetic places and non-places of affect.

The purpose of this paper is a multidimensional analysis of the problem of power in the film Matnia by Roman Polański. Using the ups and downs of three heroes as a starting point of the deliberations, the author proves that the effectiveness of power is not only in physical strength and the will to dominate but rather in the readiness to be subordinated. This readiness is generated in the heroes by such factors as vast and unprotected space of the castle, making of one of the main heroes – George – a female character, the failure of the institution of marriage (evidence of George’s wife’s unfaithfulness appears in the film), the powerlessness of language, which makes opposing the oppressor difficult, and finally omnipotence of the affect understood as a key to the interpretation of postmodern power structures.

The article addresses the issue of consumer preferences for brands of coffee in Poland (for ground coffee, instant coffee, coffee beans and instant cappuccino). The main source of the study is the results of primary research conducted using a structured interview (CAPI – Computer Assisted Personal Interview) on a nationwide sample of 800 coffee consumers. The results of the research which have been included in the article indicate, among others, ongoing changes in the preferences of Polish consumers regarding their choice of coffee brands. The results show that brands offered by small, local manufacturers are of little significance on a national level in terms of brand awareness, consumption, and consequently sales. Branded products offered by large corporations such as Jacobs, Nescafe, Lavazza and Tchibo play a major role in the coffee market in Poland.

Opis:
This article, focused principally on the exploration of contingency, the body and disgust in Michał Witkowski’s novel Margot, is also a polemic and a vindication of the book against the barrage of criticism it received from its reviewers. Most of them decided that Margot was a novel about nothing, a haphazard mix of sundry discourses devoid of any linear structure. In fact, several critics blamed the author of giving away both the narrative structure and the plot to capricious contingency. The article takes a fi rm stance against such charges and argues that contingency does not need to be seen as a fault at all. It lies at the heart of the novel and determines the actions of characters, but it plays as important a role in people’s lives outside fi ction. Analysing the ups and down of the main characters (Margot and Wadek Mandarynka), the article explains the function of emotions, the body, the characters’ language and their ideas of sacrum in the legitimization of contingency. A special role in this mechanism is played by disgust. Reactions of disgust are always contingent, or, as Julia Kristeva puts it the abject has the power to terrorize the subject to such extent that he can do nothing but to succumb to contingency. In working out the idea of the contingency of selfhood, the article also draws on Richard Rorty’s approach, and in particular his concept of ironism. The latter is used to classify the main character of Witkowski’s book as a consummate ironist, i.e. a person who tests different languages in which the world can be described in order to pursue his carnal desires. Finally, the article argues that in his novel Witkowski not only brings to light the fortuitous character of the postmodern identity but also creates a heterogeneous language to express it.

Opis:
This article examines the relationship of disgust and perversion in Lovetown (Lubiewo bez cenzury) by Michał Witkowski. An overview of the reception of the book reveals that reviewers and critics have focused mainly on Witkowski’s portrayal of the LGBT community, the structure of the novel (dubbed the ‘queer Decameron’), and the textual (meta) creation of the writer’s voice, but it ignored his handling of disgust and perversion. Central to this reading of Lovetown, which draws on Sigmund Freud’s analyses of disgust and perversion, is the observation that the narrator interlards his lingo with neutral, ‘objective’ explanations of the main characters’ deviant behaviours. This glossary, written for the general reader, tends, in effect, to legitimize deviance. An in-depth analysis of the writer’s handling of the categories of the disgusting, the perverse and the sacred leads to the conclusion that Lovetown exemplifi es a cathartic-therapeutic narrative in which disgust becomes a tool of self-fulfi llment.

The paper has an empirical nature. For the purposes of this article, the research was conducted in accordance with the interpretative research procedure using the interview method (CATI). The research objective was to learn the opinions of respondents on the effectiveness of actions related to marketing mix, used by the cultural entities of Cieszyn and Český Těšín. The produced research result enable a conclusion that marketing instruments used by Polish and Czech cultural institutions can be applicable to the process of shaping long-term relations with the recipients of the cultural offer, located on both sides of the border. It can also be assumed that, by using precisely the same marketing actions a cultural entity may shape long-term relations with recipients from both their own, as well as the other side of the border.

Nowadays, each of us, wherever he may be, will always be influenced by external impulses. Their purposeful use fits into the field of marketing. Merchandising, which falls within its scope, includes a set of tools thanks to which store owners can influence the purchasing behavior of consumers. Merchandising techniques give a kind of psychological advantage over consumers, which is used to increase store turnover. One of them is "Biedronka", chosen by the vast majority of Poles. "Biedronka" is a leader among discount stores and continuous modernizations not only contribute to its success, but also increase its advantage over others. The purpose of the work is to show the standards and merchandising solutions used in the "Biedronka" chain stores and show, that they are not universal, but suited to the location and demographic conditions. The research method consists of two parts. The first of these requires a literature review about the significance of merchandising and the techniques and standard solutions used in various types of stores. This allows for further — practical — analysis of the "Biedronka" chain stores.

The mechanism of exclusion helps the hero of the story to create a web made of attachments and dependencies. Michał (the adored object) embodies such a set of connections and acts as a lover who in this case turns against his antagonist.

Łukasz Wróblewski’s article is theoretical-empirical in character. In the first part, he focuses on a relatively recent and as yet underresearched category, that of the cross-border market. From the existing definitions of the market, Wróblewski derives a definition of the cross-border market of cultural services. He goes on to discuss the historical conditions of the creation of this market in the Cieszyn Silesia-Těšín Slezsko area. Next, he discusses the structure and specificity of the cross-border cultural product (CBCP). In the third part of the article, Wróblewski examines in detail the levels and nature of cooperation in the process of creating CBCP on the cross-border market of Cieszyn Silesia. He points out that local, regional, and Euroregional organizations and central authorities of the countries sharing the border are involved in the process of creating cultural products on the cross-border market.
