Opis:
Introduction. An adverse event is an incident induced while providing health care services or resulting from it, not related to the natural course of a given disease or health condition, which causes or is likely to cause negative consequences for the patient, including their death, a threat to life, the necessity of hospitalisation or its prolongation, permanent or considerable health detriment; or is a foetal disease, congenital defect or the result of foetal damage. Objective. The aim of this analysis is to explore the problem of the occurrence of adverse events from the perspective of doctors and ward nurses who manage wards. Materials and method. The research on the occurrence of adverse events among doctors and nurses (the management staff) was conducted with the use of a postal survey. Results. It was ascertained that 86.5% of the medical personnel had taken part in an adverse event, of which 20.2% took part in an occurrence associated with pharmacotherapy, 16.2% – in an event related to diagnostics and diagnosis, or an infection – 15.7%. 14.2% of respondents were involved in an occurrence linked to a medical device malfunction, and 14.1% – in an adverse event related to an operation. Conclusions. The adverse events most often identified in the nursing professional group are occurrences associated with pharmacotherapy, and in the doctors’ professional group – occurrences related to diagnostics and diagnosis. The research established that the most frequent reason for not informing patients about the occurrence of an adverse event is fear of their filing a complaint. Medical management staff show high acceptance of an adverse event reporting system as a tool for improving patient safety.

ntroduction: Powder extracts from white mulberry leaves (Morus alba L.) are desirable due to their simplicity of use. Powders intended for use in food and dietary supplements can be obtained by various methods, including water extraction and spray drying. Objective: The aim of the work was to optimize the aqueous process of extraction of white mulberry leaves and characterization of bioactive properties of the obtained extract powder. Methods: The DNJ and flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol) contents and were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total phenolic contents were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu phenol reagent and antioxidant activity by ABTS and DPPH assays. Results: The mulberry leaf extraction process has been optimized. The obtained powdered mulberry leaf extract proved to be a good source of bioactive compounds. Characteristic phenolic compounds detected in mulberry leaves and their powder extract were quercetin and kaempferol. The sum of polyphenols was 10.9 mg GAE/g dry matter in the raw material, whereas in the powder extract 42.6 mg GAE/g dry matter. In addition, it was found that the obtained powdered extract is characterized by a five-fold higher, in comparison to the raw material, the content of antioxidant activity measured by ABTS and DPPH tests. The content of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) in the powder extract was nearly four times higher than in dry mulberry leaves. Conclusion: The optimized process of water extraction of white mulberry leaves allows to keep valuable bioactive components and to obtain their high concentration.

The aim of the work was to analyze the content of Ni, Pb and Cd in organs (root, stem, leaf) Typha latifolia L. and Nuphar lutea as well as bottom sediments of the Ełk River and selected tributaries. An attempt was also made to indicate the factors and processes governing the behavior of the investigated metals in the water environment of the examined rivers. The research object was the Ełk River with its three tributaries - the Gawlik River, the Binduga River and the Kuwasy Canal. Samples of bottom sediments, leaves, stems and roots of Typha latifolia L. and Nuphar lutea were collected in August of 2015. The content of metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS). The results of analyses of sediments and plant material indicate a lack of environmental pollution by nickel (2.58-8.50 mg-kg-1) and lead (3.82-15.99 mg-kg-1) of the Ełk River and its tributaries whereas the cadmium content ranged from 0.16-0.76 mg-kg-1. Nuphar lutea and Typha latifolia L. showed a varied capacity to accumulate nickel (1.20-10.51 mg-kg-1) and lead (0.04-14.16 mg-kg-1), occurring primarily in the roots. The smallest concentration of nickel and lead was recorded in the stems. The highest concentration of cadmium (2.56 mg-kg-1) was noted in the roots and the lowest (0.01 mg-kg) in the leaves. Factor analysis pointed to the processes of mobilizing elements from bottom sediments as a result of pH drop and their uptake by macrophyte roots and sorption processes of metal ions by macrophytes from river waters and their intensive accumulation in bottom sediments.

Opis:
Discharges from wastewater treatment are among the key sources of pollution, if norms included in the applied legal acts are exceeded. In determining the impact of these objects on water environment it is often assumed that complete mixing wastewater with surface water is in the point or close to the discharge. In fact, the complete mixing of waste water in a short distance from the discharge occurs incidentally depending on the type of sewage receiver. The size and type of specific sewage receiver determines the conditions of self-purification. Complete mixing zone has a huge impact on the intensity of self-purification processes. Therefore, the possibility to determine the size zone of complete mixing of the waste water from the water receiver is important. The issue involves a series of methods, the most computational, which more or less allows to evaluate the distance of mixing waste water. advection, turbulent and molecular diffusion affect mixing wastewater with surface waters. The article discusses the factors influencing the mixing process and the impact of mixing on the self-purification surface waters. The aim of the article is a review of several methods for determining the distance of the segment mix completely discharged wastewater, with regard to the location of their discharge.

Opis:
Celem badań było określenie wpływu blanszowania, zamrażania oraz liofilizacji na zawartość związków fenolowych, właściwości antyoksydacyjne i barwę róż brokułu z uwzględnieniem łodygi jako części użytkowej. W badanym surowcu oznaczono zawartość wody, całkowitą zawartość związków fenolowych, właściwości przeciwutleniające (DPPH) oraz wartość siły redukującej i zdolność redukowania jonów żelaza (FRAP). Barwę mierzono w systemie CIE – L*a*b*.
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var Italica) belonges to cruciferous family and is popular for their appealing colour, flavor and texture. Broccoli is rich in health-promoting compounds such as ascorbic acid, tocopherol, β-carotene, polyphenols, glucosinolate, flavonoids and selenium. These compounds are known to provide different degree of protection against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, fresh broccoli has a limited shelf-life. It is well known that freezing is one of the most efficient methods to preserve perishable fruits and vegetables. The aim of this research was to evaluate how blanching, freezing and freeze-drying impact on the contents of phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties and colour of broccoli florets and stalk. Broccoli florets and stalk were blanched in water or vapor, frozen and lyophilized. Water content in samples was determined according to AOAC. Samples were freeze-dried (Christ LOC-1m firmy ALPHA 2-4 L D plus) at the pressure 20Pa. The total phenolic content was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and calculated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Free radical scavenging activity was determined using the DPPH method in ethanol extracts. The reducing power of the extracts was measured by the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) technique. The colour was measured in the CIE Lab system with the calculation of colour difference and change in saturation of colour. The results showed that the broccoli florets were characterised by higher content of phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant activity than the broccoli stalk. The content of phenolic compounds in fresh florets came to 198.12 mg/100 g sample, and in fresh stalk 92.70 mg/100 g sample. The blanching in water or vapor and then freezing significantly increased the content of phenolic compounds and reduced antioxidant properties of both florets and stalk. The blanching and freezing of broccoli florets cause a significant decrease in colour brightness, an increase in the proportion of green and yellow. In the case of stalk, both its core and periderm, blanching and freezing did not significant affect the value of the L* parameter and the a* chromaticity coefficient. There were no significantly changes in color and difference in saturation between fresh broccoli floret and stalk and after its freeze-drying. It has been shown that the stalk is a valuable source of important nutritionally ingredients and can be used in food processing.

In this work we show the impact of the roasting process on the properties of organic radicals in some herbal products added to cereal coffee. The EPR study shows the presence of radicals in dried herbal products, both natural and roasted. Changes in the relative intensity of the EPR signal and in the g-factor for unroasted and roasted plant material can be observed. This indicates to the recombination processes of radicals. Roasting process increases the number of radicals. The analysis of EPR spectra show that they consist of two Gaussian lines which indicate that there are at least two different kinds of radicals. The values of g-factor about 2 may be derived from a number of very different radicals. For this reason the identification of such radicals is not strictly possible.

The aim of the study was to analyze the content of Ni in fractions of 1.0–0.2 mm, 0.2–0.1 mm, 0.1–0.063 mm, 0.063–0.02 mm, and <0.02 mm of river bottom sediments and plants (root, stem, leaf) of broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia), yellow water lilies (Nuphar lutea), and cowbane (Cicuta virosa). Nickel content in bottom sediment was slightly higher than the geochemical background. The largest amounts of Ni were associated with the finest fraction, while the smallest with the thickest fraction. The highest content of this element was recorded at the point Ełk Barany, which was connected with developing industry in the city of Ełk. All of the tested plants showed greater Ni contents than the amount naturally occurring in plants. In most cases, most of Ni was associated with plant roots, and the least with leaves. It has been proven that aquatic plants can be good indicators of the aquatic environment status.

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate water quality of the Supraśl river and identify its main pollution sources. On the river and its tributaries, 8 control points were selected, located near Krynica, Gródek, Nowosiółki, Zasady (mouth of the tributary Sokołda), Supraśl, Nowodworce, Dobrzyniewo (mouth of the tributary Biała) and Dzikie. The control points were selected in such a way as to take into account the impact of major point sources of analyzed components located along the river and its main tributaries on water quality in the main stream catchment. Water samples were collected once a month during the period from May to November in 2014. In water samples the concentration of dissolved oxygen, Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+, P-PO43- and the values of pH, BOD5 and electrolytic conductivity were indicated. Based on the obtained results, loads of the individual components in river waters were calculated as a product of concentration and Supraśl waters flow rate in a particular month. Supraśl waters, due to values of most analyzed parameters, should be classified as first quality class. The source of Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+ in Supraśl waters were treated wastewater and other anthropogenic sources associated with the basin development. Reduced Supraśl water quality is caused by the inflow of organic substances expressed by BZT5 from natural and anthropogenic origin and concentration of PO43-, which were mainly delivered with treated wastewater.
