Many attempts have been made to develop a strategy for regulating forest use consistent with the multifunctional forest model. In this paper we present two proprietary methodologies of regulation of the allowable cutting size in a multifunctional forest in the 60−year time perspective. We assumed that all restrictions of nature protection and non−productive functions of the forest would still be in force. We based the first method on age class tables (TKW), which is faster but less exact in terms of spatial order of felling. The tree stand method (D−STAN) is based on stands spatial order and the cutting direction basis. In both cases, we based the temporal felling order on species rotation age. Comparing the results, we noticed that they present similar trends in the age structure of tree stands in younger age classes. The main discrepancies of the forecast concerns the share of forest stands in a complex structure: the TKW method gave approximately 12,4%, while the D−STAN one produced 5,1%. The latter approach shows that much smaller areas of stands are used for reconstruction. That marker is influenced by the spatial order of cutting used in the D−STAN model. In conclusion, we suggest to return to the big−area clear−cutting system on fresh coniferous habitats. Medium−area clear−cuttings should be brought back on the least fertile fresh mixed coniferous forests and possibly even fresh mixed deciduous forests.

The aim of the study was to compare the content of some chemical substances in a bark of about 3−year−old fast−growing poplars Populus deltoides × maximowiczii and Populus trichocarpa with literature data on the chemical composition of a bark of older deciduous trees. The Populus deltoides × maximowiczii and Populus trichocarpa material were obtained from the Wolica experimental field belonging to the Institute of Biology, Department of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Using the standard laboratory procedures, the chemical composition of the bark was examined, i.e. the content of extractives and mineral substances, cellulose, lignin and the content of soluble substances in 1% NaOH. The cellulose content in the bark of the 3−year−old poplars tested was higher by from 10 to 23% in relation to its content in the bark of older trees. Whereas, the content of lignin in the bark of the 3−year−old poplars was lower by from 10 to 20% compared to its content in the bark of other older trees. It was found that based on the data obtained, it is difficult to clearly determine which of the generally accepted factors affect the content of mineral substances and substances soluble in 1% NaOH in the bark. However, the content of extractives soluble in a mixture of ethanol and benzene (1:1) w/w, chloroform and ethanol (93:7) w/w as well as cellulose and lignin in the bark depends on the species, age, habitat conditions of the trees and the height of the trunk from which the samples were collected.

Introduction and Objective. The problem of occupational biohazards is very important, especially in the field of agriculture and in human and veterinary medicine. The aim of the study was to determine the potential sources of infection in veterinary professionals with selected zoonotic agents, including: Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia duodenalis, Leptospira spp., Cryptosporidium spp. and Coxiella burnetii. Materials and Method. A total of 50 air samples from barns, piggeries and veterinary surgeries were examined for the presence of Leptospira spp. and C. burnetii DNA. Serum samples of 86 pigs and 80 cows were tested for the presence of antibodies to Leptospira spp. and to phase I and II C. burnetii antigens. Serum of 70 cats were tested for the presence of antibodies to T. gondii and 65 samples of cat faeces for the presence of T. gondii oocysts. The presence of G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. were examined in 50 of dog faeces and 50 of bovine faeces samples. Results. DNA of Leptospira spp. was detected in 2 air samples from the piggeries (4%). C. burnetii DNA was not found in any sample. Anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies were detected in 51 (59.3%) of examined pigs. Neither anti-Leptospira spp. nor anti-C. burnetii antibodies were found among samples of bovine serum. Anti-T. gondii antibodies was found in 52 cat serum samples (74.3%). Among samples of cat faeces, no T. gondii oocysts were detected. In one sample of cattle stool (2%), G. duodenalis was detected and in another (2%) – Cryptosporidium spp. G. duodenalis was detected in 7 samples (14%) and Cryptosporidium spp. in 2 samples (2%) of dog faeces. Conclusions. The results of this study demonstrate the potential risk of infection with Leptospira spp. in veterinarians working with pigs. Veterinarians could be also be at risk of infection with T. gondii and G. duodenalis.

Mistletoe (Viscum album L.) is a semi−parasitic plant and, as long as it is not present in large quantities, it does not pose a lethal threat to trees. Due to its ability to carry out photosynthesis, its effect on the host is negligible. However, recent droughts have made heavy impact on forests and mistletoe in recent years began to appear on a larger scale in regions and in places where it has never been a threat before. For this reason, there is an urgent need to broaden our knowledge about this species. This work includes a review of the literature on the biology and ecology of mistletoe. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the methods for assessing the number of mistletoe on individual trees and in the stands as well as to prepare new method adapted to Polish conditions. New method that was proposed is based on random sample plots, each consisting of 15 trees on which impact of mistletoe is assessed. On every sample plot the mistletoe occurrence, location in the crown, estimate of the percentage within the crown and the number of mistletoe on a tree is assessed. In addition, for further analysis, information on stand (forest habitat type, site index) as well as measured trees (age, diameter, Kraft class, crown length, loss of assimilation apparatus, crown type) levels is recorded.

Celem pracy była analiza wybranych parametrów technicznych powietrza w stajni (mikroklimat) i podstawowych parametrów fizjologicznych koni utrzymywanych w tej stajni w różnych porach roku. Materiał badawczy stanowiło 12 dorosłych koni gorącokrwistych utrzymywanych w murowanej stajni boksowej. Parametry techniczne powietrza w stajni (temperatura na korytarzu, temperatura w boksie w dwóch punktach, wilgotność względna na korytarzu, wilgotność względna w boksie w dwóch punktach) określono w pierwszym dniu kalendarzowego lata, jesieni, zimy i wiosny tego samego roku. Pomiary za pomocą LB-518 – bezprzewodowego termohigrometru bateryjnego Bluetooth BLE-LOGGER były przeprowadzone o godzinie 12.00 w pięciu punktach stajni oddalonych od siebie o 300 cm. Pomiary parametrów fizjologicznych koni, czyli temperatury wewnętrznej ciała (termometr weterynaryjny Veterinär – Thermometer S.C. 12), częstości rytmu serca (mierniki Polar ELECTRO OY - RS800CX z programem PolarProTrainer 5.0.), częstości oddechów (stoper ręczny) przeprowadzono o godzinie 6.00 i 18.00 w każdym dniu badań. Stwierdzono, że pora roku wywiera znaczący wpływ na kształtowanie mikroklimatu stajennego. Ze względu na utrzymanie optymalnego poziomu wilgotności względnej powietrza, jedynie zimą i okresowo jesienią powinno się ograniczać przewietrzanie stajni. Warto również podkreślić, że mikroklimat stajni wyraźnie oddziałuje na podstawowe parametry fizjologiczne koni. Wysoka temperatura i wilgotność względna powietrza stajni może spowodować niekorzystne zmiany w postaci wieczornego wzrostu temperatury wewnętrznej ciała koni w porze letniej i spadku w porze zimowej. Pozostałe parametry, czyli częstość rytmu serca i liczba oddechów może wówczas również niekorzystnie wzrosnąć, głównie w okresie letnim. Zimą, konie powinny mieć mniej problemów z utrzymaniem prawidłowego poziomu parametrów fizjologicznych, jeszcze mniej jesienią, a najmniej wiosną.

Freeze-dried elderberry and chokeberry were proposed as natural colorants for gluten-free wafers. In addition to colour, other physical and sensorial properties of wafer sheets were also evaluated. The elderberry powder was significantly darker (L* equal 37.61) than the chokeberry powder (L* equal 41.01), and it was characterized by a considerably lower a* value (4.21 in comparison with 12.32). These powdered fruits were added in the range from 0 to 5 %. A new indicator of wafer batter delamination was developed, which can also be proposed for other liquids. Significant and favourable changes were noted in the colour of both batter and wafers, with an increased content of fruits from 1 to 5%. Gluten-free wafers with a 5% addition of fruits were characterized by L*, a*, b* values, respectively, equalling 35.73, 6.05 and 3.24 for elderberry, and 39.74, 7.15 and 5.05 for chokeberry. Wafers with a 5% addition of chokeberry and elderberry, in comparison to control wafers, had significantly higher contents of minerals, including iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium. The freeze-dried elderberry powder, as compared to the chokeberry powder, was found to significantly increase the content of these minerals. In addition, the total flavonoids content was higher in the wafers containing elderberry. Freeze-dried chokeberry and elderberry can be proposed as natural colorants and valuable functional components for wafers.

Introduction. Mortality due to various causes, despite continuous efforts to improve the quality of medical services, is a serious problem for modern healthcare systems. Ischaemic heart disease and stroke are the cause of over 15 million deaths annually, and are therefore known as the world’s number one killer. Objective. The aim of this study is to characterise the missions and the most common reasons for dispatching Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) crews, with special emphasis on the differences between urban and rural areas. Materials and method. The study was conducted using a retrospective analysis of HEMS missions, including flights to accidents and diseases carried out by HEMS crews in Poland from January 2014 – December 2018. The final analysis included 35,213 cases of HEMS missions. Results. The study group consisted mainly of male patients (66.40%), aged 50–64 (22.06%), mean age of the entire analysed group – 47.71 (SD: 25.96). The main reason for HEMS missions were strokes (21.63%). Analysis of patients’ clinical status revealed that the clinical status of patients treated in rural areas was more severe, which was indicated by the Glasgow Coma Scale – GCS (12.03 vs 12.35) and the Revised Trauma Scale – RTS (10.14 vs 10.60) scores. When assessed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) score, body injuries and fatal diseases were observed more often in patients in rural areas (NACA 7 6.12% vs 3.46%) (p<0.05). Conclusions. Multi-organ injuries, head traumas, sudden cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injuries, collapse and epilepsy, were more frequent reasons for HEMS missions in rural areas than in urban areas.

In this work, vacuum hot pressed Ni-Mn-Sn-In Heusler alloys with different concentration of In (0, 2 and 4 at.%), were investigated. The magneto-structural behaviour and microstructure dependencies on chemical composition and on heat treatment were examined. It was found that the martensite start transformation temperature increases with growing In content and to a lesser extent with increasing temperature of heat treatment. The high energy X-ray synchrotron radiation results, demonstrated that both chemical composition as well as temperature of heat treatment slightly modified the crystal structures of the studied alloys. Microstructural investigation performed by transmission electron microscopy confirmed chemical composition and crystal structure changes in the alloys.

Introduction and objective. The nursing profession entails many negative factors and high risk of chronic diseases, including overweight and obesity. The aim of the study is to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and health enhancing behaviours in Polish female nurses, and associations between overweight and 4 groups of such behaviours, age and shift work. Materials and method. The analysis covered data obtained through cross-sectional survey carried out in a group of 994 nurses with an average age of 43. The analysis covered answers about 29 health-enhancing behaviours divided into 4 categories (subscales): 1) nutrition, 2) physical activity, 3) sleep, rest and behaviours related to mental health, 4) preventive behaviours. They were analysed through the validated Positive Health Behaviours Scale for adults. The analysis also covered answers about avoiding drinking large amounts of alcohol in one go, not smoking, avoiding passive smoking, not abusing unprescribed drugs. Results. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 44%. Of 29 health behaviours concerned with nutrition, physical activity, sleep, rest, and mental health, preventive behaviours, 3 were exhibited always or almost always by over a half of the nurses. Health behaviours were more common in nurses whose BMI was normal than in nurses with BMI ≥ 25.0. Age and low physical activity levels were related to overweight and obesity in nurses. Conclusions. The study revealed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity and many deficits in health behaviours. Obesity and health behaviour deficits pose risks to the health of nurses, limit their involvement in prevention and treatment of patient obesity and impact as health educators. It is essential to engage in actions for health promotion among nurses.

Celem pracy było porównanie zmian właściwości fizycznych pieczywa pszennego spowodowanych dodatkiem do ciasta mąki zaparzanej. Mąkę zaparzaną wprowadzano do receptury na pieczywo pszenne w udziale od 0 (próba kontrolna) do 20% (co 5%). Próbny wypiek laboratoryjny pieczywa wykonano, stosując jednofazową i dwufazową metodę prowadzenia ciasta. W pieczywie oznaczono objętość, wskaźnik bieli oraz pH miękiszu. Wyliczono również upiek, masę właściwą miękiszu i wydajność pieczywa oraz przeprowadzono punktową ocenę organoleptyczną. Analizę cech tekstury miękiszu pieczywa (test analizy profilu tekstury – TPA) dokonano po 24 i 72 h od zakończenia wypieku, określając: twardość, spoistość, sprężystość i żuwalność. Stwierdzono, że w jednofazowej metodzie prowadzenia ciasta zwiększenie udziału dodatku mąki zaparzanej wpłynęło na wzrost masy właściwej miękiszu oraz obniżenie objętości pieczywa. Natomiast w metodzie dwufazowej odnotowano istotnie wyższą objętość dla pieczywa z 5 i 10% dodatkiem mąki zaparzanej. Wykazano również, że dodatek mąki zaparzanej w udziale do 10% w metodzie dwufazowej spowodował zmniejszenie twardości miękiszu zarówno po 24, jak i 72 h przechowywania. Chleby uzyskane z ciasta wytworzonego metodą jednofazową z udziałem mąki zaparzanej cechowały się istotnie wyższą żuwalnością w porównaniu z pieczywem kontrolnym. Wyniki punktowej oceny organoleptycznej chleba wykazały, że dodatek mąki zaparzanej do receptury ciasta przygotowanego metodą jednofazową w udziale do 15% oraz w metodzie dwufazowej w udziale do 20% nie powodował obniżenia jego jakości.
The aim of the work was to compare changes in the physical properties of wheat bread caused by the addition of scalded flour to dough. The scalded flour was implemented in the recipe for wheat bread at rates from 0 (control) to 20% (every 5%). The experimental baking test was done using the single-phase and the two-phase dough preparation methods in our own modification. The volume of bread, index of crumb brightness and pH of the crumb were determined. The baking loss, mass density of crumb and bread yield were also calculated, and sensory assessment was carried out. The analysis of bread crumb texture characteristics (Texture Profile Analysis Test – TPA) was made 24 h and 72 h after baking, determining hardness, cohesiveness, resilience and chewiness. It 196 M.WÓJCIK i in. was found that in the single-phase dough preparation method, the increasing amount of scalded flour caused an increase of the mass density of crumb and a decrease of bread volume. On the other hand, in the two-phase method, a significantly higher volume was noted for bread with 5 and 10% addition of scalded flour. It was also shown that the addition of scalded flour up to 10% in the two-phase method caused a decrease in hardness after 24 and 72 h of storage. Breads obtained from dough made with the single-phase method with scalded flour were characterised by significantly higher chewiness compared to the control bread. The results of quality assessment of bread showed that the addition of scalded flour to dough recipe prepared by single-phase method up to 15%, and in the two-phase method up to 20%, did not reduce its quality.

MCDA/MCDM methods are being very intensively developed in recent years, as evidenced by the number of scientific papers published annually in renowned scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database. In the years 1979-2015 a total of 1,355 scientific articles were collected in the database. The number of articles published annually increased rapidly after 2005. Besides, the annual number of citations of the publications is increasing. Research on MCDA/MCDM is conducted in many research areas. In the years 1984-2015 the Web of Science database accumulated 27 scientific publications on MCDA/MCDM in agriculture area. Therefore, it can be concluded that the MCDA/MCDM issues are currently not sufficiently analyzed in relation to agriculture. In the future this subject will probably be further developed, an increasing number of scientists will conduct research on the MCDA/MCDM and the annual number of articles published in the field will increase.

Wettability in the silver/carbon system was examined by the sessile drop method under vacuum at the temperature of 1243 K. Vitreous carbon, diamond and graphite were used as solid substrates. after wettability tests, the solidified Ag/C and Ag-X/C (X - 1 wt.% Ti or Zr) couples were subjected to structural characterization by SEM and EDX analysis. liquid pure silver does not wet these substrates and shows week adhesion, regardless of the type of the carbon material used. the introduction of 1 wt.% carbide forming additions Ti or Zr into silver changes dramatically the interaction in the Ag/C system leading to the formation of continuous reaction product layers (TiCx and ZrCx, respectively) at the drop/substrate interface. these interfacial layers are responsible for good wetting and high work of adhesion between agti1 and AgZr1 alloys and all types of carbon materials examined in this study.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań zwilżalności w układzie srebro/węgiel wykonanych w atmosferze próżni, w temperaturze 1243 K. Pomiary kąta zwilżania wykonano metodą leżącej kropli na podłożach z węgla szklistego, diamentu i grafitu. Po testach zwilżalności wytworzone pary materiałów Ag/C i Ag-X/C (X - 1% wag. Ti lub Zr) poddano analizie strukturalnej metodami SEM i EDX. Ag/C jest układem niereaktywnym, w którym srebro nie zwilża węgla. Prezentowane badania wykazują, że dodatek 1% wag. Ti lub Zr do srebra powoduje obniżenie kątów zwilżania i wzrost wartości pracy adhezji w układzie Ag/C niezależnie od typu materiału węglowego. Jest to związane z powstawaniem na granicy kontaktu kropli z podłożem węglowym warstw przejściowych zawierających węgliki TiCx lub ZrCx.

Opis:
The paper discusses some practical problems conected with introdction of modern coal combustion technologies as well as biomass co-combustion. In order to ensure that the combustion process runs in a proper way, the multichannel fiber optic monitoring system was applied. The system converts the optical signals coming from several flame zones to electrical that were further transmitted to the control room. The article prsents signal analyses made in time-frequency domain using short-time Fourier transform and wavelet transform and the way of their visualization to power boiler operators.

Streaming velocity depends on intensity and absorption of ultrasound in the media. In some cases, such as ultrasound scattered on blood cells at high frequencies, or the presence of ultrasound contrast agents, scattering affects the streaming speed. The velocities of acoustic streaming in a blood-mimicking starch suspension in water and Bracco BR14 contrast agent were measured. The source of the streaming was a plane 20MHz ultrasonic transducer. Velocity was estimated from the averaged Doppler spectrum. The single particle driving force was calculated as the integral of the momentum density tensor components. For different starch concentrations, the streaming velocity increased from 8.9 to 12.5mm/s. This corresponds to a constant 14% velocity increase for a 1 g/l increase in starch concentration. For BR14, the streaming velocity remained constant at 7.2mm/s and was independent of the microbubbles concentration. The velocity was less than in reference, within 0.5mm/s measurement error. Theoretical calculations showed a 16% increase in streaming velocity for 1 g/l starch concentration rise, very similar to the experimental results. The theory has also shown the ability to reduce the streaming velocity by low-density scatterers, as was experimentally proved using the BR14 contrast agent.
