Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to examine the relations within an upper middleclassfamily – as depicted by Virginia Woolf in a collection of autobiographical essays, Moments ofBeing – and compare these against the patriarchal model. The ultimate aim is to expose and locate,as early as the last decade of the Victorian era, the signs that a transformation was about to occur. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The Victorian paradigm of the patriarchal rolesof pater familias and mater familias has been analyzed. In conformity with philological methods, appropriate literary evidence is provided. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article first focuses on the concept of the Victorianpater familias and mater familias. It presents an analysis of the Stephens family who feature in Momentsof Being. A traditionally conservative perspective with regard to the male family members isjuxtaposed with the contrasting viewpoint voiced by the author of the collection. RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis of the autobiographical essays reveals certain shifts in theroles of the Victorian pater familias and mater familias in late-Victorian times. Furthermore, certainrifts in familial relations are uncovered and investigated with reference to differing attitudes to theissue of female education. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The analysis exposed severalfissures in the patriarchal model and located these at an earlier date than commonly accepted. Italso demonstrated that the first signs of the transformations that would occur in British society wereparticularly noticeable in the novel attitudes to the question of female education. This may encouragefurther research of contemporary perspectives on institutional instruction.

Opis:
The Polish-born English novelist, Joseph Conrad, once challenged the general public with a statement which stigmatized the printed word in wartime coverage as being cold, silent, and colorless. The aim of this article is to investigate the manner in which the writer himself applied words in his wartime non-fictional works in order to bestow a lasting effect on his texts. It is argued that irony renders his non-fiction memorable. Thus, the focus is first placed on the manner in which irony features in Conrad’s political essays, collected in Notes on Life and Letters, from 1921. It is argued that irony applied in his non-fiction represents what Wayne C. Booth termed stable irony. Further, it is claimed that, as a spokesman for a non-existent country, Conrad succeeded in transposing the Polish perspective into a discourse familiar to the British public. This seems possible due to the application of the concept of the body politic and the deployment of Gothic imagery. Finally, the paper examines the manner in which words are effectively used to voice the stance of a moralist on truth and the lie of the printed word in the turbulent times around the end of the 19th century.

Opis:
The Covid-19 crisis has led to a re-definition of our lives and a significant de-stabilization of our mental condition. Research shows that we tend to conceive of challenging realities in terms of war and battle: thus, we have struggled with depression, lower spirits and a lack of human interactions. If so, how can we counteract such depressive tendencies? Although today it seems both writing and reading are efficient in mitigating feelings of loneliness, historical records of the reactions to the Spanish influenza pandemic (1918) reveals that silence and evasion are also possible. Using the method of wide reading, I first examine the divergent responses to crisis. Through close reading, I then explore the manner in which literature may be therapeutic for both writers and readers. Finally, I argue that the literary choices of the reading public, recently re-directed towards auto/biographical fiction, may soon impact on the canon within education. This, in turn, prompts a final hypothesis concerning a generic re-shaping of a future literary canon.
