Opis:: Equine piroplasmosis (EP), is a tick-borne disease caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. EP affects all domestic and wild equids and the clinical signs are related to intravascular haemolysis. The illness is present in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions and is maintained in susceptible host population as long as competent vectors occur. Piroplasmosis remains a vast problem in horse industry as clinical manifestations lead to abortions, withdrawal from training due to the condition deterioration and even to death. Difficulties with diagnosis and treatment make the illness even more serious, as the medical protocol without harmful side-effects hasn’t been established. Even though multiple attempts were done, the vaccine is unavailable.

Opis:: Antimicrobials are essential and widely used in veterinary practice. Their use undergoes numerous national and European regulations, but should also meet the criteria of recommendations and statements of veterinary associations and other professional structures. Currently, multidrug resistance is recognized as one of the largest threats to both human and animal health, widely discussed internationally. Horses are unique domestic animal species, due to their dual role as either food- or non-food-producing animals and this fact further complicates the everyday equine veterinary practice. The aim of this study is to introduce the problem of antimicrobial therapy in horses in the context of the legislation and the general principles of good veterinary practice.

Rhodococcus equi
Opis:: Rhodococcus equi is an important etiologic agent of respiratory- and non-respiratory tract infections, diseases of animals and humans. Therapy includes the use of various group of chemotherapeutic agents, however resistance acquirement is quite common. To date there is no preferred treatment protocol for infections caused by isolates resistant to macrolides and rifampicin. The resistance acquirement is a result of many molecular mechanisms, some of which include alterations in the cell envelope composition and structure, activity of the efflux pumps, enzymatic destruction or inactivation of antibiotics, and changes in the target site. This paper contains an overview of antimicrobial susceptibility of R. equi, and explains the possible molecular mechanisms responsible for antimicrobial resistance in this particular microorganism.
