Opis:
The performance of passive safety devices to protect vulnerable road users, or otherwise endangered persons, from severe injuries in cases of impacts and accidents has improved notably in recent decades. The devices’ levels of performance appear to have plateaued but the numbers of severe injuries and deaths caused in such incidents could be decreased further if new solutions are found. At first, the possibilities for improving the impact behavior of passive safety devices may appear to be restricted to device geometry; however, it is in fact also possible to rethink the applied materials and to utilize natural principles in their design. In this study, impact related brain injury mechanisms and injury criteria are investigated using dynamic simulations and Finite Element Head Models, results from which are compared with data collected from real-life accidents. As these tools are advancing considerably in terms of accuracy, information density and complexity, they provide, like expert knowledge from the fields of biomechanics, biomedicine and neuroscience, valuable input for further development.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the influence of cranial sutures on the crack behaviour of a human skull after the impact. The authors focused on the assessment of skull breaking nature, based on a real-world vehicle-to-bicyclist accident. In the state of the art, there is still no consensus about sutures mechanical properties. Currently, most of the numerical head models do not have distinguished cranial sutures. Methods: The authors compared different elastic properties for cranial sutures and their influence on the nature of the skull fracture. The mathematical and numerical modelling have been applied to mimic the nature of the skull fracture. The LS-DYNA explicit code with material models featuring the erosion of finite elements was used. The models of the skull with different cranial sutures properties were impacted against a validated front-end of a vehicle. Results: Various fracture patterns were obtained for different material properties of the sutures and the results were compared to a model without the cranial sutures. Based on the results, a graph was plotted to indicate differences in sutures energy absorption capabilities. The numerical results were supported by the mathematical modelling. The developed diagram may enable better understanding of the complex mechanical phenomena on the suture interface. Conclusions: Biomechanical evidence was provided for the important role of the sutures in numerical models as well as their significant influence on the biomechanics of skull fractures caused by dynamic loads.

Opis:
Carex pallidula is a European species which is often overlooked because it is similar in appearance to C. digitata. So far, this species has been recorded from ten European countries. During herbarium studies in 2014 and 2015, the occurrence of C. pallidula was confirmed for another six European countries (Albania, Austria, Greece, Romania, Serbia, and Switzerland), providing a new insight into its distribution. A list of new localities of C. pallidula and a distribution map for Europe are provided. A key for determining some taxa within the section Clandestinae is presented. Finnish material of the supposed hybrid of C. digitata and C. pallidula is considered to be young specimens of C. digitata.

Opis:
The authors of this paper provide a critical analysis of the most prominent theoretical vehicles employed in studying differentiated integration in contemporary, post-Brexit Europe. They discuss the descriptive, explanatory, and interpretative potential of the selected theoretical approaches that are applied at the intersection of disintegration and European differentiation discourse. “The holy grail” of the theorising of the dynamic (and accelerating) processes of (dis)integration and differentiation remains undiscovered. Nevertheless, a constant search for theoretical explanation is needed in the in-depth analyses of the current state of the European Union.

The samples were subjected to oxidation in air at a temperature of 1000 centigrade for a period of 100 h and next examined by stereoscopic optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and Rutherford back scattering spectrometry (RBS). The results obtained with the use of ion implantation are discussed.

Opis:
New distribution data for 171 bryophyte taxa in the Roztocze National Park are provided. Among them there are 43 species protected by law in Poland, including 20 strictly protected species, as well as 13 species threatened in Poland. The research revealed 36 species (5 liverworts and 31 mosses) new for the region. Noteworthy is the occurrence of 19 mountain species and 10 bryophytes thought to be relicts of old-growth forests what confirms the specificity of nature of the Roztocze region. The most valuable and interesting finds are: mosses Campylophyllopsis sommerfeltii (Myrin) Ochyra, Dicranum viride (Sull. & Lesq.) Lindb., Buxbaumia viridis (Moug. ex Lam. & DC.) Brid. ex Moug. & Nestl. as well as liverworts Calypogeia suecica (Arnell et J. Perss.) Müll. Frib. and Cephalozia catenulata (Huebener) Lindb. A brief characterisations of these species are presented.
